Thinking about David today and missing him. Wanted to share some of the photos I have or took. My condolences to his entire family. My heart breaks for you guys, I'm so sorry. He was the absolute best of us.

Oh, Dave. I hadn't seen you in years but I'll miss you forever. I don't have much profound to say. I'll leave the profundity to the past, in your dimly-lit room, when we'd unpack the latest philosophy you'd read and I'd try, often in vain, to keep up with your prodigious intellect and wisdom. This is my favourite picture of us, on that ill-fated weekend in Collingwood. "You might forget the sound of a voice, still you should not forget, yeah don't forget, the things that we laughed about". Rest In Peace, old friend.

I came back to the Hirst family as a nanny in September 1988 to work for a couple of months. I didn't know that Mary was pregnant until a few months later, so I had the opportunity to be in the family when David arrived. I'm so grateful that I spent that time with you and that has characterized my life. I'm so sorry. All my love to you ❤️

I can't believe that it's been just over two years. I'm at a loss for words, which seems proper given the magnitude of David's life and the impact he had on mine. I find myself thinking about him often, revisiting letters and messages exchanged, the poems and stories he wrote, photos taken and all the memories I wish I could go back to relive. David was hilarious, fiercely intelligent, thoughtful, loving, and sensitive. I remember whenever I'd go a tangent about some unpleasant interaction I had, his response would always be, said while cracking knuckles, "alright, you need me to go bust some skulls?". Eternity or only a few seconds could pass during one of our conversations and we wouldn't know the difference. David was also difficult, but I imagine he'd say the same thing about me. I learned a lot from him about life, art, love, and myself. I am a better person for having had the honour of knowing him. David was an extraordinary person who I miss immensely. Despite the pain, I wouldn't trade anything for the memories I have except maybe for the opportunity to see him or speak to him just once more. My deepest condolences to the Hirst family.

I only knew David professionally and only for a little over a year. He possessed an agile and creative mind and I loved our discussions on pedagogy, philosophy, and technology. He carried his substantial intellect lightly and was always so much fun to be around. I will miss him.
