Recuerdos

A beautiful soul is never forgotten; it lives on in the hearts of those who cherish the memories. May she find peace, joy and love in a new-found paradise.

In loving memory of Darlene, a fiercely determined single mother, a resourceful self-taught individual, creative artisan, entrepreneurial spirit, and master of resilience, who passed away on November 5, 2023. On June 5, 1952 she was born to the now late Sylvester and Dorothy (Sperber) Schmiling. She is survived by her only daughter Laura Michaletz and her brothers and sisters Bill Schmiling, Gladys Haase, and Shirley Kostca. She was proceeded in death by her sister Lois Jedlowski.

If you click the Memento link of this tribute you will find two videos that highlights her life through picture, word and music. One celebrates her life reviewing who she was and the other is an engaging presentation of her creative works through her lifetime. Darlene requested no funeral so I, her daughter Laura, created these tributes to create an engaging presentation of her life.

Darlene was cremated and currently is not in any cemetary. If she is later placed, this will be updated.

Darlene had a nurturing spirit that reached many people beyond her family, as she played an active role ensuring a rich and fulfilling childhood through actively encouraging, or being directly involved in her daughter’s extracurricular classes, volunteer opportunities, fundraising and clubs fostering an environment of growth and exploration. In her child’s younger years she actively was involved with her daughter’s Pioneer Girls group. Additionally, she later served as a Girl Scout leader and played an active role in her 4-H group, introducing her child to the principles of leadership and community service. She planned and lead many artistic activities for the children in the groups her child participated in.

Throughout the years, Darlene had many job titles. No matter where she worked she always put her full attention and effort into it often going above and beyond.

Darlene's entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly throughout her journey, often collaborating with family members. She and her sister, Lois Jedlowski, ventured into the world of business by founding a small store in a mall. Later she would occasionally visit and help with her sister Lois and her husband Al Jedlowski’s campground.

For many years she dedicated herself to supporting her brother Bill Schmiling in establishing von Stiehl Winery, a family enterprise that endures today. Within the winery, she played a multifaceted roll fostered the growth of the winery, gift and fudge shop through multiple everyday practical and creative capacities. Over the years she supported the business creatively through creating hand-painted wine glasses with cherry motif, sewing tour guide outfits, packing wine baskets and more.

In later years, she would again have her own small business called Dreamer’s Nook featuring an array of products. Darlene created a variety of hand-made things to sell including embroidered purses and eye pillows. At times, she created products that supported other small businesses.

Although she spent many long hours dedicated to work, she also was particularly skilled in creative pursuits. Darlene was particularly good at sewing. Countless hours were devoted to sewing outfits that were heartfelt expressions of her love and care throughout her child's early years. Darlene often sewed enchanting and impressive Halloween costumes for her daughter, creating cherished memories that would last a lifetime.

In her later years, Darlene embraced the art of embroidery, crafting and sharing a multitude of unique pieces that found homes in the hearts of those who appreciated her creative spirit.

Darlene loved to take photos not only of friends and loved ones but also of nature. Her photos were often impressive. So much so that she once had her sand hill crane photos features on Fox 11 News website as well as wunderground weather photos.

Christmas held a special place in Darlene's heart. She transformed her home into a haven of warmth and love during the holiday season. Her homemade candies became legendary, a testament to her dedication to creating joyous memories for her loved ones. On Christmas Eve, abundant trays of snacks were served alongside a well-thought-out meal, complementing the sea of thoughtful presents beneath the tree. Every Christmas was a magical experience for all who shared it with her.

Throughout her life, Darlene was a source of charity and goodwill, offering support to others and giving more than she received. Her acts of kindness were often quietly performed, unseen by the wider world, but deeply felt by those she helped.

In her final year, Darlene faced bitter injustices with the same stubborn courage that had carried her through her entire life. While her departure is difficult, it also marks the end of her battles, allowing her to find the peace she so rightfully earned.
