I was Chair of AAMW for six years, and really she was running the program as much as I was. Whenever I ran into a problem that I had no idea how to address, "Ask Darlene!" was the solution. But actually, it was all the precious moments that we shared sitting in her office to chat about AAMW or anything that had nothing to do with AAMW - like the Eagles, running a marathon, or her family - that I will remember. It was a joy to be around Darlene and I miss her a lot.

Whenever I walked into Jaffe, one of the first people I would look for was Darlene. I had this strange way of announcing myself: I would knock on the glass of her office and shake my hand at her. Darlene would look at me and laugh. There was not a single question Darlene could not answer. She knew it all. She made everything work smoothly. She cared about all of us. As soon as I arrived as a first-year PhD student, she would give me tips on everything, from groceries to smoothies. Even in the hurry of everyday academic life, we could still find time to talk about more personal things. That's how I found out that Darlene was not a fan of cannoli! This year, when the fall semester started, I passed by her office. Counterintuitively, I knocked on the glass. Darlene was not there. I am glad we had the opportunity to be grateful to Darlene while she was with us. Now, she will continue to be with us in our memories and in our hearts. I will remember her funny smile, her contagious loud laugh, and the way she made Jaffe feels more welcoming. I hope Darlene's family and friends can find comfort.

Darlene touched many, many lives in such positive ways. I would not have made it through Penn without her help and kindness. Every time I've traveled back to campus she was always my first stop to say hello and catch up. She was loved by all at Jaffe and beyond, and will be deeply missed.

Darlene was a guiding light for me and all undergraduates that made the decision to change their major to art history. She helped me with scheduling, got me caught up as quickly as possible to the curriculum requirements, and made sure I had all the signatures I needed on my paperwork. For me, she is a part of a moment where I made the shift from what I thought I should study to what I truly loved to study. The first time I chose what I wanted to do over what I thought others wanted me to do, and she supported it. Over 25 years later, I'm now an art history professor myself, and it's rare to meet someone at any university with the knowledge and kindness that Darlene shared so freely. I'm grateful she was there to welcome me into my forever field, and I'm so sad to hear of her passing. She will truly be missed.

Darlene's friendship, guidance, and graciousness will always be indelible parts of my experience in Jaffe. Her selflessness knew no bounds and without fail, she always had time for us students. If we were experiencing a challenging moment, her particular blend of wisdom, humor, and love would snap things back into perspective. Given how much she had accomplished and how she had seen so many of us through our own accomplishments, it was easy to trust her in all things. After any conversation with Darlene, everything would feel more ok. It was an incredible privilege to be able to rely on her, laugh with her, and share moments big and small with her during my time at Penn. She will be forever cherished.
