In Loving Memory of Mrs Chituru Ugwuezi Ama Achilefu (née Chituru Joanna Atulomah)
Mrs Chituru Ugwuezi Achilefu (née Atulomah) of Umuabali, Umuopara, Abia State, passed away peacefully on the 9th of May 2026.
Born on the 13th of February 1932 into the loving Methodist family of Chief Johnny Iweha Atulomah and Mrs Nwaogu Mercy Atulomah, Chituru lived an extraordinary life marked by faith, service, compassion and unwavering devotion to her family and community.
A gifted educator and passionate advocate for women and children, she dedicated many years to nurturing and inspiring young minds across Umuahia, Ilorin, Jos and Lagos. Her distinguished career in education culminated in her service as the Headmistress of both St Stephen’s Primary School and Amuzukwu Primary School, Umuahia. Throughout her life, she remained a steadfast champion of girls’ education and the empowerment of women.
Beyond the classroom, Chituru devoted herself wholeheartedly to the service of others. From her early years as a Girl Guide to her many leadership and public service roles, she worked tirelessly to uplift her community and promote the welfare of women, children and families. She was a founding member and community leader of the Idi n’Otu Women’s Club, President and Co-ordinator of its Umuopara Branch, a founding Member of the Women’s Commission in Umuahia, a Board Director of the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom, Plateau State, and a respected Jury Member and Counsellor at the Juvenile Court in Umuahia.
Above all, Chituru was a woman of deep and abiding Christian faith. She found great joy in worship, prayer and intercession, faithfully supporting the work of the Church and the growth of Christian ministries. In her later years Chituru studied theology. Her quiet strength, wisdom, grace, warmth and gentle humour touched countless lives and earned her the love and admiration of all who knew her.
Chituru was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her home was a place of welcome, kindness and laughter, where family and friends found comfort, encouragement and love. She cherished every opportunity to gather with loved ones, both in Nigeria and abroad, creating treasured memories that will be cherished for generations to come.
Mrs Chituru Achilefu leaves behind a rich and enduring legacy. She is lovingly remembered by her three children and their spouses, Odo (Iheme), Obii (Uche) and ChiChi (Chinyere); 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; her loving brother, Sir Anabaraonye O. I. Atulomah KJW (De Anab); her sisters-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews and a wide circle of relatives, friends and well-wishers whose lives she profoundly touched.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Mr Stephen Amaghereonu Okwu Achilefu, with whom she shared a life founded on love, faith and family, her parents, 6 brothers and a sister.
The family extends its heartfelt appreciation to Sir De Anab KJW, her darling sister in-law Mrs Joannah Ulunma Ogbuehi nee Achilefu (Da Jo), Miss Chituru Sylvia Atulomah, Dr Nosike Erondu & Staff and Ms Oluchi Nwabuko (her care giver) for their exceptional care, devotion and companionship, particularly during her final days. Their kindness and support were an immeasurable blessing. We are equally grateful to the extended family and friends whose prayers, presence and encouragement brought comfort and strength during this difficult time.
Though she is no longer with us in body, her legacy of faith, service, love and selflessness lives on in the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.

A Personal Tribute to a Remarkable Mother, nneoma nwere Ugwu, *MRS CHITURU UGWUEZI ACHILEFU* )Nee Atuloma). It is with a heavy heart, yet profound gratitude to God for a life well lived, that I pay tribute to the beloved mother of my dear friend, sister, Mentor, and namesake, Dr Pastora Odochi Ndukwe. Though I did not have the privilege of knowing Mama as closely as her family and loved ones did, I came to appreciate her greatness through the exceptional woman she raised. My relationship with Senior Odochi dates back to the formative period of our Old Girls’ Association, where she was the President and over the years, I have had the honour of serving alongside her in the Steering Committee of our Old Girls’ Association, during her tenure as President. Throughout that period, I witnessed her dedication, integrity, wisdom, strength of character, and unwavering commitment to service. These admirable qualities could not have emerged by chance; they are undoubtedly the fruits of the values, discipline, faith, and nurturing she received from her mother. Mama’s legacy therefore lives on in the life of her daughter and in the many lives she continues to touch. A mother who raises a child to become a leader, mentor, and source of inspiration to others has made an invaluable contribution to society. Mama’s influence extended far beyond her immediate family and the many lives she touched; it is reflected in every good work, every act of kindness, and every life impacted by the daughter she so lovingly nurtured. As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate a life of purpose, sacrifice, and enduring impact. We thank God for the years He granted her and for the beautiful legacy she leaves behind. May the memories of her love, wisdom, and devotion continue to comfort her family and all who knew her. To my dearest Senior Odochi and the entire family, please accept my heartfelt condolences. May God grant you the strength to bear this loss and the grace to find comfort in the knowledge that Mama lived a meaningful life and has left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen. Frances Odochi Onwunali (nee Ginikanwa) Member, Steering Committee/Asst Secretary Horosco OGA

TRIBUTE TO Mummy, grand mummy, great grand mummy and Auntie chituru ugwuezi Achilefu Auntie- you were a mother in Israel - A woman with a heart of Gold , - A diamond mummy and - My unforgettable brilliant and excellent teacher at the municipal primary school surulere later renamed Lagos city council school, surulere lagos. Time will not permit me to expanciate on the above qualities of auntie Achilefu, however permit me to recall the faithful morning in 1971 when I went with my uncle for the common entrance examinations into class 1 at the Holy Rosary secondary school umuahia. My parents had insisted and concluded that the only good secondary school in umuahia for their daughter to attend was Holy Rosary secondary school umuahia and non other. Whereas the prominent catholic secondary school in umuahia was never my choice or best option. So sadness was written all over my face as I followed my uncle like a sheep marked for the slaughter. Suddenly after the gate and in front of the classrooms and principal’s office, I got a lovely surprise as I sighted my beautiful and elegant lagos primary school teacher with her usual wide open teeth as she chatted and smiled with two other women who may have brought their daughters for the same common entrance examinations. My heart immediately leapt for joy. l quickly abandoned my uncle and ran as fast as my legs could carry me to her very warm embrace. Auntie was quick to echo my name "Rose"(wonderful memory I thought in my heart). We had notable but very brief discussions centered on the Biafra war activities and the inherent ugly experiences during which I told her about my ordeal and how it was mandatory that I return back home that day with a successful result. All other schools in umuahia had conducted their own common entrance examinations. Auntie told me that the school authorities had indicated that after the written exams, Successful candidates who resided within umuahia metropolis would go back home and return on Monday next following for oral interview. This meant that those who resided outside umuahia would be interviewed that same day. Auntie, was quick to observe the sad and negative expression on my face. She went into the office and came back with a good and favorable news for me" I would be interviewed same day provided I passed the written examination. Auntie made my day and my joy was immeasurable. God used her to rewrite my school story that day. How could I be quick to forget such a wonderful and profound gesture towards the fulfillment of my heart desire. Infact she deserved more honors. Her daughter Odochi became my very good friend that distance could not separate us unto this day and even beyond. Auntie worked so hard that she single handedly nurtured and brought up her children very excellently that today her children and grand children are all over the world with good reputation in character and learning. Auntie thank you so much for your legacies worthy of emulation. Auntie, on one of your posters, I saw you wearing a glorious smile, indeed yours was a life well lived. Even in death, you triumphed, what other blessings are humans asking for?. Mama, you got them all. Blessed be the name of our great God who showed you love, grace, favour and mercy to achieve all of these. No wonder psalm 116 v15,says “Precious in the sight of God is the death of his saints. Your children, grand children and great grand children are already missing you and will miss you the more when it becomes obvious to them that they can no longer see you physically again. Please they should be well guided because diamonds don’t die, they live forever in the hearts of men!!. There is no doubt that you were a diamond mummy. Odo and siblings, all our in-laws, please cherish the beautiful legacies she left behind by emulating her ways. We thank God for the amazing life she lived and enjoyed in Christ Jesus. we loved you mummy but God loves you the most. For the families involved, the Lord will continue to be your strength. We join you all in celebrating her brilliant life and glorious exit. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace as we all await the resurrection morning.
