I had not seen Cathy in several years. After high school, we both lived in different parts of the world and country. However, we stayed in touch by phone. Cathy was a wonderful surprise born seventeen years after our parents last child. If it had not been for Cathy being a surprise baby, I would not be here. Since our parents did not want Cathy to grow up alone, I was born. Since our other siblings were several years older than us, Cathy and I grew up very close. We were more than brother and sister; we were good friends. Although we loved to terrorize each other in our early years, we supported each other as we matured. On one occasion, Cathy needed a date for an upcoming event, and I was honored to be her escort. We both had a wonderful evening. A few years later, I was in the position of needing a date and Cathy was pleased to be my date. We were brought up to support and respect each other. Cathy and our Dad shared a keen interest in gardening. They both took great pride in their beautiful rose gardens. It gives me great comfort knowing she shared so many wonderful years and memories with the love of her life, Steve Fischer. Cathy will always have a special place in my heart and in my memories.

We first met Cate at her daughter, Crystal's, graduation ceremony at Bastyr University. We were sitting with our son, Ian, Crystal's soon-to-be husband, and he leaned over and said, "There's Crystal's mother." We looked over and saw this vibrant, enthusiastic woman yelling "YES!" and raising her fist in triumph! "That's my daughter!" she was shouting, and everyone around her was smiling and happy for this lady!!! We enjoyed her "no holds barred" excitement! We knew right away that we liked this woman who rejoiced with gusto! We met her next when she and her husband, Steve, had a party for Ian and Crystal to celebrate their engagement. The celebration was held at Steve and Cate's town home, and it was there that we understood what a rose bush should really look like! Yes, we were SHAMED by the beauty of her rose garden! Oh, my goodness! Our rose bushes looked totally anemic next to hers! Her methods sounded easy (yes, we asked), but we are quite sure that a lot of it had to do with her tender loving care. Cate was definitely rugged and certainly a survivor. For those who knew her well, you know that she endured great tragedy in her life. Her character and strength of resolve helped her make it through those truly gut-wrenching times. May we say, as truly unprejudiced in-laws, that Crystal was a beacon in her life… a beautiful daughter who loved her mom deeply and understood her SO well. Crystal, your caring for your mom was wonderful to behold. You respected her desire for independence and treated her with great dignity. Ian, your support of Cate, Crystal, and Steve was admirable, and we were proud of you. And, Steve, you were such a kind and loving husband. The cruises you took her on seemed to be some of the highlights of her life! How wonderful that she got those moments, thanks to you!!!! Hopefully, Crystal and Steve, you understand how much your love meant to Cate and how much it sustained her. She was a passionate, bright, lively, feisty woman … fiercely independent, totally honest, and deeply loving. You were all blessed to have each other. Although we cannot be with you in person on Saturday, May 8th, at 12pm, we will join the family from afar at that time, play one of Cate's favorite songs, "Wind Beneath My Wings," and drink a little Jack Daniels toast in her memory!
