Magdalen Bethany Newhouse
March 23rd, 1954 - May 3rd, 2020
March 23rd, 1954 - May 3rd, 2020
Magdalen Bethany Newhouse, 66, of Stillwater, Minnesota, went to be home with her Lord on May 3, 2020. She died peacefully in her sleep and awoke in the presence of Jesus.
Magdalen "Bethany" Newhouse was born March 23rd, 1954 along with her twin sister, Margaret, in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of the late Raul and Margaret Cuellar. She was the third born of eight children. On September 5, 1976, she married Robert Newhouse in Lima, Peru.
"Maggie" was raised in Dallas, Texas, and moved with her family to Denver, Colorado in 1971. She loved taking trips to the mountains and loved to travel. Her life was forever changed when she read letters from her brother Ralph, who wrote to her from Afghanistan about the peace and joy he had found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. She too surrendered her life to Jesus and made Him her Lord and Savior at the age of 18. That same year, she hitchhiked to New York with her friend and flew to Amsterdam en route to Afghanistan to meet up with her brother. She stayed with Christians she met in Amsterdam, took the name "Bethany" as her middle name, and for the next 7 years, she was on a mission to tell the world about Jesus, her Savior.
Bethany was trained as a Montessori teacher and taught in schools in Italy. While in Italy, she first met her future husband Robert. She was then invited to go to Iran and worked with the Shah of Iran's wife setting up a Montessori school. Later, she had to flee for her life from Iran to Afghanistan when Muslim extremists toppled the country. She was then invited to help start a Montessori school in Peru. On her way there, the boat stopped in Marseilles, France where Robert got on board. Without either of them knowing, he had also been invited to work in that same school. They fell in love once again, were married, and had their first child, Jonathon, while living in Peru.
They left Peru in 1978 with their new family and lived in California where she had her second child, Jeremy. In 1979 they moved to Minnesota to live near Bob's family, where three more children were born: Sarah, Marija, and Joseph. She always described this last move as "her greatest step of faith"- because growing up in Dallas, she was convinced that only Eskimos lived in Minnesota.
With her experience in education, Bethany was selected to be on Governor Rudy Perpich's education taskforce to help write a compulsory education law of Minnesota, that would legalize the new form of education called "homeschooling". This twelve-person taskforce, led by Commissioner of Education, Ruth Randall, crafted one of the nation's first education laws legalizing home education in 1987. She also helped start the TEACH Institute, the first accrediting home school organization in the country, that employed certified teachers to work with the parents to verify/assist in home education.
She personally home-schooled all five of her children, from K -12th grade, and was actively participating in homeschooling her grandchildren - who were the joy of her life! She loved making the yearly visits to see her side of the family in Denver, Colorado who she loved so much. She was a great cook and her dinner table was always open for guests - who quickly became like family. Bethany will always be remembered for how she selflessly served and prayed for others and opened her home to one and all. She has now entered her eternal home with her Savior. Her greatest wish would be to see you there again.
Magdalen Bethany Newhouse is survived by her husband Robert, her five children: Jonathon (Michelle), Jeremy (Jessica), Sarah (Chad), Marija (Evan), Joseph, as well as her siblings: Ralph, Carlos, identical twin Margaret, Rachel, Gabriel, Louis, and Richard. She was a loving grandmother to her twelve grandchildren: Jude, Jacob, Orion, Evangeline, Finneas, Oscar, Margaret, Selah, Josaphine, Gabriella, Keziah, and Winston. We are all going to miss her immensely.

Mr Newhouse, my memories could never do justice to such a beautiful woman. I knew you well because you were my teacher, actually more like a rabbi. So genuine and clear in your thoughts and beliefs. Your care and love towards your students was transformative for me. Whenever I went to you home Bethany always (and I mean always) had a joyful calm about her. She was comforting, gentle, welcoming, and Christ like. The two of you were home to me. Your home was safe and the Holy Spirit was Palatable. She was a huge part of that and I knew it. I know you’ll see her again thanks to the unwavering and finished work of Christ on the cross. What love! And his love shown through her. What more could be said except that we be like Him!!

I just now saw that Bethany has passed and is in heaven. Dear friend thank you for all the years of friendship tho we rarely have seen each other in the last 30 years. I was there with you when you had your firstborn, Jeremy. You were there for me when I had my second child Jaime. You are now both in heaven, you and Jaime. I love you. May you be in peace and joy. Look forward to seeing you both when it is my time, Love, Melissa (Misty, Joy)

Ever since my Aunt Bethany died, I think often about how I best remember her. Some of my earliest memories of her are during holiday get togethers. I would be sitting at the kitchen table in the Robbinsdale house while she zigged and zagged back and forth making sure everyone was being fed. I honestly remember thinking as a 4 or 5 year old, “is Bethany ever going to get a chance to eat anything?” She definitely seemed to have a servant’s heart. As I grew older, she always had pointed the our conversations back to me and genuinely cared for me and everything going on in my life. I will definitely miss her but we all know that she is in a much better place and with many people she definitely missed while she was here with us - her parents, friends, Ole and Ruth, and my dad. Thinking about them and the celebration they are having puts a smile on my face.

Dear sweet Bethany was a constant at our weekly visits to her house back in the early 80s with my high school friends. She always had a kind word or show full support through good times and bad in my life. Mr and Mrs Newhouse will ALWAYS be in my thoughts and prayers!! Looking forward to seeing you in heaven Bethany!! Orine Robinson (OBrien)

Dear Bob, Jono, Sarah, Jeremy, Maria and Joe, I have so many wonderful memories of Bethany and all of you. I'll never forget the first time we came to your house when the kids were so young, TEACH consultations, Sat morning bussing breakfast and going into the neighborhood, eating Lutefisk at your house for the first time, and on and on. I am still using my Bosch bread machine so she and all of you are often in my thoughts! My most special memory of Bethany was the morning of Jim's death, when our dear church family came over to minister to us with food, help, encouragement and love. I was too crushed and devastated with grief to go downstairs where everyone was. Bethany came up to my room and knelt beside my bed and wept with me and prayed with me. She just stayed by my side for a good long time. Her quiet presence and encouragement to me in those moments were like a visitation from an angel. She was the queen of encouragers and giver of good cheer in the Lord. I have nothing but fond memories of her and am so grateful to have been a recipient of her love and encouragement on many occasions. I was so shocked and grieved to hear of her passing. I grieve for each one of you and pray for you continually that God will comfort you as only He can - in the deepest, most inner part of your heart where only He can reach. Bob, your post the day after Bethany died was so moving and beautiful. Know that I will continue to keep all of you in my prayers as you struggle to live life without your wife , mom, grandmom and friend. With much love, Cheryl Stewart Elliott
