Robert Manuel Moniz

Robert Manuel Moniz

January 19th, 1941 - March 22nd, 2021

"There are no strangers here; only friends you haven't yet met." - W.B. Yeats

Biography

Robert “Bob” M. Moniz passed away on March 22, 2021 at the age of 80 in his retirement community, Stonecrest, in Summerfield, Florida. His battle with leukemia over the past few years showed his courage in facing life’s challenges. Despite the pain and constant visits to the medical center, he stayed strong and always had a smile and kind words for everyone he met.

Bob married the love of his life Janet at age 18. They were blessed with 61 years together and had three daughters, Elizabeth, Robin, and Lynda. His love and passion for his family was the heartbeat of his life.

Born in Rhode Island, he graduated from East Providence High School in 1958 and immediately joined the U.S. Air Force, serving until 1962. After his military service, he returned home and found his calling as a customer service representative for the Providence Gas Company where he worked for 34 years. Upon retiring, he fulfilled his dream of living in the warm, sunny state of Florida where he could enjoy relaxing and playing golf.

Bob was a special man. He had a way of making everyone he met feel welcome. He never met “strangers,” only friends he hadn’t yet met. No matter who you were or your standing in the world, he would find a way to make you feel appreciated – as if you were an old friend.

Bob was the beloved husband of Janet (born Rezendes) Moniz. He is also survived by his three daughters and their spouses: Elizabeth and John Carden, Robin Moniz Perry and Karen Marks, and Lynda Moniz and Scott Kisch; his six granddaughters: Kristen, Kerry (John), Lindsay (Steve), Samantha (Jorge), Brittney, Morgan; his two great-grandchildren: Sloan and Pearl; His sister Patricia Rambone and family; his cousin Jane Rambone and spouse Richard, and a host of long-time friends.

As an expression of sympathy, contributions can be made to the leukemia society; or if able, a donation of blood in Bob’s honor.

I first met Bob when we were teenagers and he was already "courting" my warm, beautiful, funny, and loving cousin Janet. I knew that if Janet loved him so much, he must be really special. I recall the days when they first moved back to RI and were living in the basement of Bob's mom's house where her "ferocious" chihuahua would always attack us. And I loved visiting them at their house on in Riverside, then at their new place in Warren. Bob, who had a great sense of humor, was one of the few people who could get away with calling me Patricia, which coming from him sounded like a term of affection. Bob showed so much love for Janet, and she for him, that being with them was like getting a peek at Paradise. I especially loved those wonderful days when they visited me in Florida. We had so much fun together, so much laughter, and so much love. I will forever miss you, Bob.

I first met Bob about 14 years ago. My husband Joe & I were vacationing in Orlando Fl. His daughter Lynda had started dating my son Scott Kisch. We met for lunch & from the start both He & Janet were friendly & easy to talk to & inquisitive. From that time on we saw each other at Christmas & in the summer when they would visit NJ. I will miss getting together with him. He led a full life enjoyed being married to Janet, having his children, his grandchildren, his great grandchildren & friends. He will be missed.

When Bob & Janet first moved into Stonecrest they made it a point to introduce themselves. The neighborhood has never been the same since. Two wonderful people. A short time later, Bob learned I was putting in a new front door. That day, he was there & he & I installed a new pre-hung front door. Couldn’t have done it without his help. Though we only knew each other a couple of months we worked together like we had been working together for years. Bob was just that way! We will miss the golf outings, dining out & the neighborhood meets. One golf outing, my wife Karl wanted to try her hand at golfing. She was using my large driver & Bob after observing this a few times, said to me, “ hey why are you making her use that big club? Give her a smaller club to try or I will!” (For the record I was letting her use whatever club she wanted to try) Karl did do better with a smaller club. I enclosed a couple of pictures of a January 1, 2010 Moniz, VanDyke & Merry excursion to Disney Hotels to view the many Displays for Christmas & New Years. The gingerbread was good! It was Jim VanDykes birthday. We will all miss Bob here at Stonecrest. The neighborhood will never be the same!

Bob was one of a kind. Bob and his wife have been long time friends. He was so much fun before his illness. Through his illness he would still do his best to laugh and be kind So many laughs through the years. We would all go out and sure enough we would be ready to leave and we would ask where is Bob? He was talking to a stranger or a casual acquaintance. He just couldn't help it he loved people. We shared so many fun memories with him. He would go along with anything. He posed for pictures acting funny because we asked him to with a boa around his neck and a giant rose in his mouth, and that was in a department store. On game nights we would make our time a pleasure. His wife was his shinning star. She was his best friend. He loved his family and he loved us. It was an honor to have had him in our lives for so many years. We loved him and will forever miss him.

Bob was such an amazing man. First time I met him was Christmas many years ago. We were immediate family and felt like I knew him all my life. I just recall arriving to Scott and Lynda’s house one Christmas after Hannah was born and he was just so excited for our arrival with “the baby”. He loved Hannah. Somewhere there is a video of Bob and Hannah dancing at an event (Scott, I think has it). I will cherish that. My condolences to all his girls. He loved you all fiercely. Just witnessing your relationship over the years has been beautiful. I will miss you Bob.

I always enjoyed my time with Janet & Bob. We would go to dinners and laugh a lot! He would come & help me with home issues when I was here in Florida & back in illinois when things needed fixing. I so appreciated it. He would call me in illinois & tell me the pond was rising behind my house & get me worried - then he would laugh. Always made me smile Both of them are a joy to be with. We would end an evening with special dessert after great evenings together. He introduced me to a great ice cream stand in Bellview that is still there & I will always smile when I go by remembering him. Thoughts & prayers are for all of you in Bobs’s family because he sure loved his family & I heard many stories of family events. Love from Carol Zimny

Carol Zimny. I forgot 1 more story. He was proud of me when I got my car in my garage so he wanted to buy me a chicken as a reward but Janet said he couldn’t buy me a chicken so he bought a chocolate cake but since I wasn’t home at first - he ate a piece of my cake before his 2nd attempt to deliver it to me. He laughed that I could finally get my my car in garage after 18 years on the driveway because I had too much junk in there. Sorry. Long story

Bob and Janet have been wonderful friends for the many years
since we met while living in Stonecrest. Bob's sense of humor and cheerful demeanor will missed by so many. His favorite jokes with me were always about my crazy sneakers whenever I saw him while I was out walking. To this day, whenever I am shopping for sneakers I always think of Bob. He never complained to anyone about his health issues, and always checked on others.
His family is just so warm and loving and have put so much thought and love into this tribute to Bob. It is wonderful to see the happy, loving family, and realize he will missed by all.
Rest peacefully Bob!
Fond thoughts always

Such a warm man with a big smile and head as shiny as his heart! I don't know Bob nearly as well as my fellow friends and neighbors at Stonecrest but what I do know, I loved. He was such a wonderful man with an open heart. He truly made you feel welcome. I don't think we ever first met. Because that first meeting made it feel like we had known each other all along. Such a wonderful guy that I wish I would have the pleasure of knowing longer. Bob and Janet are truly wonderful, caring people who were perfect for each other. My heart hurts for the loss Bob's family and friends feel, and will feel, for a long time to come. Only time and reuniting will heal that, I pray.

Tom Gissler published a tribute .

We live in an increasingly cynical and dark world. Because of this, meeting “Papa” Moniz was transformative for me. He was the grandfather of a close friend. I met him only as a bit player in his life. But he immediately displayed a warmth and genuine curiosity about my life that both disarmed me and welcomed me into his hand picked circle. It felt important. In minutes he was my grandfather, giving me unwanted but wise advice. Disagreeing with me about a slew of subjects. Poking at me. It felt like love. As a man, I search for those people who can show me the way. Mentors. Guides. Papa wasn’t an astronaut or a senator. He wasn’t a sage or prophet. What he was, however, was successful in precisely the ways one needs to be successful. He had found, won, and kept the love of a great woman. He had produced a family of people who knew how to live and love and adored him. He had set his sights on a life in Florida and achieved it. He was happy. Accomplished. Cranky and mischievous. Brilliant.
I only sat in his presence a few times. But here I am, writing this, remembering him and his example, his spirit, and wiping my eyes. Because I’m coming behind you Papa. I’m following in your footsteps albeit imperfectly. Perhaps one day I’ll see you again and we can squabble over some benign detail. Maybe play a round of golf. In the meantime, I’ll hold onto your memory as a treasure map to what’s important. Swing a club for me old timer and save me a spot in the cart.

Kristen Nichols published a tribute .

My relationship with my grandfather (Papa) is something special that has always been just mine and the thought of sharing that with others felt like losing a piece of myself. But my papa was so brave and so I prayed and we talked and here we are - I can be brave too. Papa was a blue collar man in the best way but he was never afraid to be vulnerable and show emotion. He taught me so much about love and what it means to be a family.

I am the first grandchild and with that comes a unique bond. My papa is woven into the fabric of who I am, forever intertwined with the woman I have become. He was there when I was born and throughout every milestone in my life - coming home from the hospital, living in his and my grandmother's home, birthday celebrations, moving to NJ, graduations, breakups. He was always there with my nonnie making me laugh or allowing me to vent or cry or get angry.

He could be SO stubborn. But that stubborness is what kept him going and with us for as long as he was. He could be quick to anger but just as quick to forgive. He was funny and goofy and always brought levity to a family who is sometimes... a little too serious. He was a loyal man - to his family, friends, the company he worked at for 34 years.

It is true that he never met a stranger - just last month he was on the phone making calls about his home insurance and I thought he was talking to an old friend. That's the thing, even towards the end he was still watching over my grandmother and the rest of us. He loved my nonnie more than anyone in the whole world and he truly modeled what loving someone for a lifetime looks like #hashtaggoals.

I was so fortunate to spend 41 years of my life with the man that taught me what unconditional love is. My whole family has been so fortunate. There aren't words to describe how much he will be missed but I take comfort in knowing that he lives on in myself and my family. Nurture is such a large part of who we are and the legacy we carry on. And the legacy my papa leaves is one of laughter, loyalty, silliness, stubbornness, bravery and love.

When I think about Bob, first of all I remember his smile. No matter what was happening, he was always optimistic. He also loved to tell a good joke and when he stopped by International House to see us (of course, that means to see Jan), he usually had a joke for us. HIs love of cars was legendary, and a new car was never far from his mind. He introduced me to the delights of the Portuguese Casserle sandwich and to this day, I think of him whenever I find that specialty on a menu! I know he will be missed by his family and friends and I’m so sorry that infectious smile won’t be around to light up a room. Please accept my condolences and know that I’m thinking of you all.

My Papa was a special man. Put simply, he touched lives. He didn’t do it in a glamorous way. He just had a way of making you feel welcome, no matter who you were or where you came from. If he met you on the job and you were wearing a name tag, he’d address you by name and after a few seconds you’d feel like you’d known him your entire life. It never occurred to him that the people he met in his daily walk weren’t already his friends. He was funny and charming and the most loyal person I know. He adored his family and the love and dedication he showed my Nonnie throughout his entire life (they met and married very young) has shaped my own definition of love.
My Papa was a union guy. He was a little rough around the edges in a charming kind of way. He served in the U.S. Air Force and had tattoos of his beloved wife’s name on his forearms. He had a temper. He could fix anything and negotiate the best price on a new vehicle — boy did he love a shiny new truck — and he’d drive my Nonnie nuts, trading them in frequently. At the same time, you’d find him in the kitchen by Nonnie’s side chopping an onion or following some other instruction she had given or even more frequently, washing dishes behind her. He didn’t love playing games but he’d oblige us most times and it made it that much more fun. He loved ice cream, peanuts and potato chips but most of all, a hot homemade meal. He taught me how to slow dance and gave me endless advice as I navigated my own life.
He was so proud when he found out I was having a baby boy and so blessed when he got to meet my baby girl. He cherished every moment he got to spend with them and watched them all the time on the baby monitor while they were sleeping. I’d give anything for my kids to know him as they grow up and will do my very best to keep him alive for them through stories and memories.
I miss his voice, his laugh, his random calls asking me how the kids are doing or laughing about something they did on the camera. I miss hearing him say, hey Jan, I love you, which he did so often throughout the day. Our family won’t be the same without him. He truly was one of the greats and the world just isn’t the same without him here.

To the Moniz/Nichols family - an extension of my own - I'm so saddened for you all by the loss of papa. Every memory of papa from my childhood is represented by either a big belly laugh or an instigating snicker. He was the grandfather I never really had. Looking back, I love how much he just loved being around his family. His presence was jolly but powerful. How he treated people left a lasting impression - even on my kids after just one outing together. I always felt like he was truly engaged in conversations which always made you feel good about the time you spent. He was one of a kind and the world was a better place with him in it. It's impossible to sum up in words how much I love and miss Papa. Papa was more than an amazing grandfather to me...he was a father figure, a role model, and a friend.

When I think of Papa I think of warmth, love, laughter, encouragement, faith, protection, swedish fish and Portuguese salmon soup.
