Reuben was a positive, curious, handsome, resilient and thoughtful young man. He brought us so much joy, we love him more than words can say and miss him every second. A generous, loving son and brother who was a great role model (most of the time!).
Although Reuben only lived 19 years, he managed to fit in a lifetime of memories, always prioritising time spent with friends and family. He loved many things; wildlife, France, Geography, fine food, tennis, skiing, driving, films (esp. Star Wars), Lego, music, cooking everything from homemade pasta to tapas and profiteroles!
Reuben was diagnosed with a rare soft tissue sarcoma in January 2019 and throughout several cycles of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery and immunotherapy he always remained positive and never lost his smile.
Charity links in memory of Reuben are in the 'about' section below - Reuben was passionate about WWF and the project linked to his fund raising is for "Planting Hope" replanting seagrass in Dale (where we had a lovely family holiday) to restore habitats and remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Sarcoma UK is helping others like Reuben to have better outcomes.

The Thanksgiving service link is below for anyone who would like to view a direct link is also on the events page. Thanks for all the personal memories, comments and photos. We hope Reuben knew how much he was loved!

Thanksgiving Prayer
From Mull, for Reuben
***
Tonight the moon throws an angel’s light on Loch Na Keal.
The mountains gather round, heads bent and shoulders joined in a majestic line of sadness. The silken sea is quiet and still, respectful, mirroring the dizzying slopes that roll upwards from the shore.
Rich, browny weeds, delicate and fragile as lace, stitch a line between the kingdoms of land and water.
Earth pauses.
Only the oystercatcher flies long and low, circling and resting and crying its strange ‘pik pik’ to the night.
///
Dawn brings an uncertain mist, then lifts to a dazzle of light and explodes in activity and sound: Purple sandpipers land in flurries; tiny pipits and quarrelling turnstones career over the rocks; swallows and swifts, cormorants and buzzards, chaffinches and kingfishes, herons and geese wheel and turn, dart and swoop, weaving their stories like an invisible calligraphy of the air, each one attuned to its individual task, as all creation begins its daily song.
Each blade of grass, every flower, nook and furrow sets to work. Fields and rivers teem and chatter, and behind it all the ocean heaves and breathes an eternal sigh.
///
The ancient poets sang about how people turn into other things; into trees and animals and birds.
Here, in a corner of one of the earth’s great wildernesses, you become the things you loved.
Nature is full of you, giving space to your memory.
We see you in the landscape’s lovely canvas, painted with blue and purple, red, green and gold. We see you in the inquisitive, thoughtful seal, who watches us curiously, as if questioning us for the secrets of the hills and sky.
We remember your delight in tasty delicacies, grown and ripened by the generous soil. We hear you in the laughing, humorous gulls, in waves that slap our backs like a gentle, joking friend. We conjure your warm, slow smile in the curve of the bay.
You creep up on us in the grieving hills. We try to follow you in the intricate patchworks of rock pools and rivers, as complex and unnavigable as a young man’s thoughts.
We behold your strength, your endurance in the eagle that soars and hovers on uncontrollable currents we cannot understand or command.
We learn from you in the vivid seagrass that unfurls its wisdom; seeding life; balancing our out-of-kilter world and restoring our hope.
///
Words fail us, as they have so often since you passed on, so we write your name on the sand.
We wish it were not so, but nature keeps singing about how people turn into beautiful things, about how life connects life, wonderfully and painfully.
Here, in magnificent wilderness, we give God thanks for you; the boy in blue with golden hair, resting your chin on your hand.
We gaze with you; we wonder with you at the world you loved.

I may have been one of the only ones blessed enough to get to know Reuben though Royal Holloway. He was the first person that I properly got to know from our course and he was always smiling and incredibly bright – in both intelligence and personality. I had the honour of working on a project with him; he was so funny and bubbly and came across as such a genuine person that I would have loved to spend more time with. He was, and still is, a beautiful soul and my deepest sympathy’s are with his family and friends xxx

On behalf of the staff and students of the Department of Geography here at Royal Holloway I wanted to convey the collective impression Reuben made during his time with us: of a young man with a passion for life, for university, for his studies, for improving the world. He is very much missed by our community; and our thoughts go out to all his family, friends and loved ones. We are very proud to have had him as a student with us.

Over the years, while we may not have met Reuben too often, we felt we knew him through our school network. Sharing pictures and stories of his brave journey created a connection between our families and his amazing smile is forever engraved in my heart. By talking to his parents on the occasions we got together, in my mind, Reuben very much became a role model figure for how I would love my own boys to turn out - generous, grounded, warm, kind, smart, funny... Kate and Steve must be the proudest parents and Toby and Guy the proudest brothers. Sending our love to you all x

I'll always remember Reuben for his huge smile and shock of wavy hair at the various family functions over the last 20 years. It was such a source of joy for us all when you made that wonderful video for Jackie and John's 50th wedding anniversary, knowing what you were all facing, but seeing him there, towering over everyone and beaming away. I'm so devastated for you all. You're in my thoughts every day. Sending you all possible love, Susie xx

Below are some of the words spoken by Ethan and I at Reuben's Thanksgiving service, written with Jacob and Chris:
Reuben was one of the best friends I have ever had and will ever have.
He was one of the most kind, caring and compassionate people I have ever met. Not to mention his great sense of humour and dashing good looks, a real winning combo when it came to the ladies!
Reuben was a sincere, generous, and considerate friend. It’s the qualities like these that made him so likeable with so many people.
He had a way of connecting people that was special; he always showed a genuine interest in whatever you had to say and always remembered the small details you would tell him to check up on you later.
He would always be able to bring a smile to your face, no matter how bad your day was, and even when not at his best he would always know the perfect thing to say.
I will really miss being able to meet and hangout with him and all the other guys but will never forget all the good times we’ve had with him over the years.
We had so much more planned for the future and while it breaks my heart he won’t be there in person, he will always be with us in spirit and at heart.
Reuben truly was one of a kind, his strong will and determination to thrive during his own hardships make him a true inspiration to us all.
It is difficult for us to put into words what a wonderful person Reuben was, and the joy of having a friendship with him. Reuben and I met in the summer of year 6, shortly before joining secondary school, and he has remained one of my closest and best friends ever since. Despite my poor memory, I can still picture his first time having come to mine, and the fierce competition over an Xbox game.
Reuben was a person of extraordinary talent. He was extremely clever, and I remember for ages I had wanted to be in the same set as him in maths when he was above me. When I finally moved up to Reuben’s class after years of waiting, he moved up the same year. Not only that, but Reuben was one of the funniest people we have ever known; his humour making even the smallest of things the most hilarious of memories.
Reuben’s joining university in the face of hardship epitomises his willingness to adventure, and to always try his best despite uncertainties. His faith remains an absolute inspiration, being one of the strongest and most loyal people we have ever known. Reuben never took himself too seriously, with his humility always shining the light on others as opposed to himself. He was a joy in the lives of so many; as can be attested to by all who knew him.
Reuben was not only an incredible person, but an amazing friend. Again, one cannot put into words such a unique character. It has been an absolute joy to know Reuben for us all. We are so lucky to have had such a friendship; of which could not have been imagined all of those years ago. Whilst we may all miss Reuben, there is no doubt that we will see him again, with a smile on his face as he so often had.

Reuben was and will always be one of my favourite people in the whole world. I have known Reuben since I was three years old and he has been such a huge part of my life. I don’t remember the day when I didn’t know him. I was going through old photos and he’s at all my birthday parties, family BBQ’s and so many holidays. I haven’t stayed friends with anybody else as long as I have with him, he really was and always will be a lifelong friend to me. You would think we would drift apart a little as we got older but we didn’t, we only became closer as time went on. We went to different schools and I didn’t know any of his friends and he didn’t know any of mine but that didn’t make a difference. We still spoke to each other every day and saw each other as much as we possibly could. At his 17th birthday party he spent so much time with me, making sure I had people to speak to and wasn’t on my own, despite the fact that it was his party and all his friends were around him. He could have gone off and left me but he didn’t. He was the sort of friend that would never let you feel left out and never let you down. He had so many friends yet he made us all feel so special and I have never met anyone quite like him.
We shared so much with each other, especially in these last couple of years. He was one of the only people who I knew wouldn’t judge me or laugh at me for anything at all and he always took my tiny little worries and rants seriously despite his own problems and obviously his illness in the past couple years. He was such an amazing listener and always gave great advice and was generally an all round amazing friend. He was also so funny. His sarcasm and dark humour could always lift me out of any bad mood. The fact that he could laugh in the face of his cancer just proves to me his strength. It wasn’t until the last month of this horrible two year period that I heard him complain. For two whole years he laughed, smiled and joked through all of the horrors of his treatment and his illness. I have never been so in awe of someone in my life. He was so utterly selfless in the sense that he would take time out of his day to make me feel better when he was feeling so rubbish and would rarely ever complain. Instead, he lived his life to the full. He came on holiday with my family a week before his chemo started, he saw as much of the world as he possibly could and spent the time with the people he cared about the most. He saw crying and panicking as a waste of time and really was the strength and the smile that all of us needed through this.
There is so many things I will miss about Reuben; his terrible skiing, his love for weird picky foods that nobody else wants to eat, his love for animals, his sense of humour and the way in which he was always unapologetically himself. I will miss those weird tik tok’s he sends to me at 2am and the fact that he would watch nigella lawson on repeat. I will miss his laugh and I will miss the hours we spend chatting absolute rubbish and laughing until we cry about something so stupid. I miss Reuben so so much and I can’t get my head around the fact that I will never see him again after being a part of my life for so long. When I saw him just before he passed, he was still making jokes. I wish I said more to him on that last day but I know that he knew I loved him. I just wish I said it more. We shared so many memories and life milestones together and I’m not ready to do the next ones on my own. I love you Reuben and I will never forget you. You are my friend for life even though you are gone.

I wanted my Mum to read this but the WiFi’s so bad in Malawi she couldn’t get it up, so I had to read it out to her over the phone. Well I tried to read it out, but I couldn’t get to the end I was crying too much. That was so true and beautiful Rhiannon, and though the awesomeness of Reuben couldn’t be confined to words, I’m glad someone could delineate so movingly at least an idea of how amazing he was. xxxxx

For Reuben x
I remember the first time that I met Reuben was in my creative group at school. Maybe a little shy and awkward but then I think we all were back then. We quickly became friends and were soon enough enjoying economics and clubbing nights out a few years later.
I think there’s a lot of things that can be said about Reuben as a person, but I don’t think I’ve ever met a person where they were all positive. His infectious sense of humor, the ability to pick you up when you were feeling down, and just the general energy that he brought into a room I think were some of the main reasons that we became such great friends.
Whilst he may only have been 19 years old, he certainly gave us the best 19 years that anyone could have asked for, and the fact that he gave me so much joy and love in our friendship just goes to show how much more he gave everyone else.
I will dearly miss him, the friendship we had, all the jokes and laughter, the silly drunken stumbles, and mistakes we made along the way, the talk of girls and romance (although I would say he had a lot more luck than I did), and the many entertaining nights in the barn house.
Rest in peace x

Poem from Céline and Jérôme that was read at Reuben's funeral:
J'ai écrit ton nom, Reuben Dossett
J'ai écrit ton nom sure le sable,
Mais la vague l'a effacé.
J'ai gravé ton nom sur un arbre,
Mais l'écorce est tombée.
J'ai incrusté ton nom dans le marbre,
Mais la pierre a cassé.
J'ai enfoui ton nom dans mon cœur,
Et le temps l'a gardé.
Rough translation:
I wrote your name, Reuben Dossett.
I wrote your name in the sand,
But a wave erased it.
I carved your name into a tree,
But the bark fell off.
I inlayed your name in marble,
But the stone broke.
I buried your name in my heart,
And time kept it safe.

Reuben's year group will always hold a particularly special place in my heart - we started our Ranelagh journey together and I was lucky enough to be Reuben’s Head of Year in Year 11. He was one of the most gentle, polite students I have ever had the privilege to know and teach. If my son grows up to be anywhere near as warm, kind, and caring as Reuben I shall be immensely proud. You were the best childhood friend I could have ever asked for growing up and I will forever cherish the amazing memories we have together. There was never a time you weren’t there for me in whatever I needed.
I hope you know how loved you were during your time on earth. I only wish we got longer together because you were such a light in the world and you were taken way too soon.

We do always laugh about the time you camped in the girls Grandads garden and Richard came to say goodnight. The girls needed some water so off he went back up to the house. He returned with 2 cups of water but in the meantime the fly net for the tent was done up. Full force Richard ran through the fly net and covered all you kids with water as well as making a massive human figure hole in the fly net!
We really did love spending every minute with you, who wouldn't! Rest gorgeous Reuben, we miss you already.

I had the pleasure of going to Ranelagh with Reuben and being in the same classes right through school. One of my favourite memories were our geography field trips and the picnic on the beach. Reubens smile could light up a room, he will be missed by so many. Here is a photo of our geography class a few weeks before we left school.

Our memories of Reuben are mainly from his younger years at St Peter's Farnborough. Always smiling, a delight to be with, and an able helper at mission events. A credit to his parents. Delighted that Reuben developed such a love for France. His friend Romain's grandma is a great friend of Farnborough francophiles. Happy memories.

A photo that sits by my bed, a reminder of good times with the Dossett's. it brings back memories of going back to their house in Sandhurst after school (having played or sat with Reuben all day as I was going round that night) and perfectly reenacting our favourite lightsaber duels from various Star Wars movies, preparing to invade Lego Hoth with Toby and Reuben, intense games of Mario Kart Wii (which we even started up again in later years when I came to visit). In later years, it was a comfort to start seeing Reuben again and spend some time gaming, catching up, checking out the latest purchase of Lego (usually one that I followed suit with after Reuben managing to convince me of the worthwhile investment) and sitting down at the table and having dinner with the family like we would back in primary school days brought back fond memories. Seeing Reuben in the last few years brought back some normality in my life that I so desperately needed at the time when things were changing and is something I will always be thankful for. I was always so amazed at how upbeat he was during his treatment and it made me feel so proud that someone our age was coping so well with this, and still supporting friends and family around him. Reuben was an amazing friend with a brilliant character and I am so glad we were friends. Many happy memories to ponder over in future years and I can thank Reuben for many of my hobbies and passions today as they are things we shared. Reuben's memory will forever be with me.

Just one of the many pizza making parties with the St Michael's group, where there were only 2 things on minds - make the pizza and eat the pizza. I always remember a healthy bit of competition between myself and Reuben at the pizza table as too who made the best pizza.

I had the pleasure of meeting Reuben when he came and did some work experience at Qlik. Steve’s family always popped in to say hello when we were running charity events, and Reuben was always such a lovely young man, engaging others and smiling.
Your Dad was always so proud when he spoke about you and your brothers. Sleep tight Reuben x

You were just a little boy, still in Primary School, when you welcomed Romain, our grandson, in your Sandhurst home.
Your smile and the goodness of your heart made of this first stay a success and the beginning of a long friendship.

“Can you tell what it is yet?” Year 9 Reuben enjoying French and re recreating La Tour Eiffel. It was an honour and a privilege to work with him - always so motivated, interested and hard working. We had lots of fun with Annie and Sarah in A level too - cake and Lego featured in many a lesson. Lovely memories.

The first time I met Reuben was when he came to do his work experience at Qlik and I was fortunate to spend some time with him.
Far from being nervous he walked in to the office with a big smile. He really made the most of his experience and every time I saw him he was smiling - that is how I will remember him.

Nine years ago, I discovered Reuben, a boy who was always smiling and who made me discover his environment, his daily life and his good mood. We didn't speak the same language, we didn't always understand each other but we always found a way to laugh and have fun together. I wanted to learn English with you, but I discovered a friend with whom I shared wonderful moments that I will never forget.

Reuben and Romain on their way to Pic du Midi in the Pyrénées, August 2016. Always happy, always smiling, always trying (new food or speaking French!).
For years we have been exchanging kids & suitcases in Pibrac / Brax, Puylagarde or even at Toulouse airport (shame on us!). Reuben and Romain were a bit anxious at first but legos and a jump in the swimming pool brought them together.

I had the pleasure to meet Reuben a few times through working with Steve. He was a credit to his Mum and Dad, a wonderful young man. I found it very humbling to discuss with Steve the different treatments Rueben faced head-on with such courage and the thought that the treatments might not work for him, but by having them, he could be helping others in the future, amazing courage and dignity.

Reuben truly was one amazing young man, I had the pleasure to meet him when he worked at Qlik when I was working for Steve - Reuben did work experience and blew me away with his confidence and attitude to life. After this we kept bumping into each other on the train when I was on the way to work and he was on the way to school - so polite and always gave me a hug or a kiss on the cheek! Truly a credit to his wonderful parents and so thankful to have known this amazing young man.

I loved hanging out with Rueben around – in the kitchen, on walks and on camping chairs when he’d dragged himself out of his tent. His gentle smile, comradery humour with everyone and calm presence always made him such a lovely positive presence. I know there is so much I will learn from him in my memories.
