Lorna Irungu-Macharia

Lorna Irungu-Macharia

October 18th, 1973 - March 22nd, 2021

Biography

Lorna Irungu-Macharia was the loving wife of Edwin Macharia and mother of Nancy Mumbi Macharia. Daughter of the late Festus G Irungu and Lucy Bancy Wanjiru; daughter-in-law of the late Elias Macharia and Nancy Macharia; sister of Rose, Carole, Jomo and Ikiki; sister-in-law of Siteiya, Dennis and Jackie, Eric and Eliza, and the late Irene Wanjiku; beloved aunt of Tyger, Mikey, Mayiana, Zeta, Xaria, Zozo, Zahari, Kim, Jasmine, Shannon, Shanice, and Talida. She was a niece and cousin of many. Lorna had many dear friends and was a beloved aunt to their children.

Lorna passed away on Monday 22nd March 2021 at the Karen Hospital, Nairobi, while undergoing treatment for COVID-19. She was cremated on Tuesday 23rd March 2021.

Lorna was a communications professional and a committed social activist. She began her career in the performance arts and was serially awarded for her Phoenix Theatre stage performances. This expanded into the TV scene, where she hosted Club Kiboko on KTN and Omo-Pick-A-Box on KBC. She also worked on movie productions such as Dangerous Affairs (2002), the first of its kind with an all-Kenyan production team and cast. In addition to playing a leading role, she supported the film’s marketing and PR efforts. Lorna then moved behind the camera after she was chosen to be in the first class of MNet Initiatives, a move by the pay-TV platform to identify and groom the next generation of African movie producers. She produced Rastar (2003), which was featured at the Zanzibar International Film Festival where she represented Kenya.

Lorna continued utilizing and expanding her skills in various spaces. She served as Entertainment Manager for the Tamarind Group, using the platform to create premier entertainment experiences in the region. These included popular events at the Carnivore such as New Jack Swing, Simba Soul, Rock Nite, and hosting international acts like Sean Paul and Shaggy. She consistently used the platform to create space for Kenyan artists to showcase their talent.

After the Carnivore, she continued to elevate Kenyan and African artists through Siwa Communications, a boutique PR firm she founded. In 2007, she served as Project Manager for the first season of Tusker Project Fame, the first-ever live simulcast show across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. She then served as Producer of Red Kona, the comedy show featuring the Redykyulass trio that took the country by storm with their edgy act that challenged social and political norms. With Motorola as the client, she pioneered global corporate engagement with Kenyan artists, supporting the production of the hit song, Tatizo, which featured leading Kenyan artists such as Juacali, Nyashinski, Abbas Kubaff, Nameless, Pam, and Karma, with DJ Pinye and Fakii Liwali as producers. She also shepherded the process that led to Juacali being named a global Motorola ambassador, a first for the region.

Lorna was a committed social and gender activist, using her platform and skillset to amplify women’s issues and causes. She worked tirelessly to promote women’s voices in media and politics. These were recurring themes in all her radio shows on Capital FM, KISS FM and, more recently, Nation FM. She was a core part of Warembo Ni Yes, the successful grassroots women’s campaign to develop and adopt Kenya’s constitution in 2010. She was Head of Communications for Martha Karua’s run for President in 2013. She hosted the Vagina Monologues numerous times to create awareness on violence against women and girls, efforts that were critical in the passing of the Sexual Offences Act in 2006, while raising over $10,000 for grassroots organizations dealing with gender-based violence. That same year, she co-led Vijana Tugutuke, Kenya’s most successful youth voter registration campaign to date. She was a passionate advocate for women in business, always supporting women-owned and women-led enterprises; many will count her as an early adopter and committed champion for them.

Between 2018 and 2020, Lorna served as CEO of the Gina Din Group, Africa’s most awarded PR firm. She worked directly with the founder, Gina Din-Kariuki, to prepare the group for acquisition by Edelman, the global PR agency. Lorna was a popular and effective team captain, providing leadership in handling critical clients such as President Barack Obama’s visit to Kenya in 2018.

In 2016, Lorna was appointed to a Government task force to work on the restructuring of Kenya’s state broadcaster, KBC. She served on the boards of the African Leadership Institute and World Reader-Kenya, and completed her term on the Advocacy Accelerator Advisory Board in 2019. She was an Eisenhower Global Fellow (2016) and an Archbishop Desmond Tutu Fellow (2010). She had a Bachelor of Communications degree from Daystar University.

For over 20 years, Lorna fought and, in many ways, won the battle against lupus, an autoimmune disease. Between 1998 and 2008, she had three kidney transplants. Despite continuing health challenges, she chose to live a joyful, purposeful, generous, and impactful life.

From the onset of the coronavirus pandemic last year, Lorna understood that implementing basic COVID-19 protocols was central to protecting the lives of those at risk of serious illness. While her family has not spent time speculating over how and where Lorna may have contracted the virus, the rigorous implementation of COVID-19 protocols at home protected her family, friends, and staff from exposure to the virus. She was often frustrated by the alarming misinformation that has shaped and continues to shape public perception of this virus, including the vaccine. Lorna acknowledged that a trust deficit in our public institutions and leadership have contributed significantly to the current crisis.

Lorna believed that a crisis is a terrible thing to waste. Therefore, as her family and friends, we take this opportunity to reiterate her message by imploring all Kenyans to: Properly wear well-fitting masks (over mouth and nose); maintain social distance; keep rooms and public spaces aerated, including public transport; wash hands with soap and water; sanitize; and get vaccinated.

To celebrate her life and continuing legacy, her family will set up the Lorna Irungu-Macharia Foundation dedicated to two causes that were close to her heart: the improvement of health policies and support for people living with autoimmune diseases, and the advancement of the rights of women and girls — particularly in leadership and politics. Contributions to the Foundation can be sent via Paybill 891300; Account: KUISAN or https://secure.changa.co.ke/myweb/share/46091

We thank all the doctors who through the years have been instrumental in tending to her medical needs: Dr Ahmed Twahir, her nephrologist at Parklands Kidney Centre, Dr Charles Kariuki, her cardiologist at Nairobi Hospital, and Dr Dan Gikonyo, Dr Anthony Gikonyo and Dr George Nyale at Karen Hospital, as well as all the nurses who treated her with love and care particularly in her final days.

Loved by so many, Lorna will be remembered fondly. A virtual memorial service will be held on Saturday 27th March 2021 from 7pm East Africa Time to celebrate her life.

I watched Lorna intermittently on Omo Pick a Box. I followed her story in later years. Something about it struck a chord with me. It was encouraging for reasons i could not yet explain. When i was in campus a friend berated me for 'always being sick' and i was like, 'I will quote Lorna Irungu on this one when she said, i am not in the business of being sick, despite facing health challenges.' Several years later when i was finally diagnosed with a chronic illness i not only understood why her stories were of great encouragement, i knew that this life with chronic illness can be lived.
Every time someone wants to put me in a box of what i should and i shouldn't do because of my chronic illness, I remember Lorna. That she lived a life so full and impactful. I never got to meet her personally but i am so very grateful for her life. I am grateful that she lived in every sense of the word.

You girl, I remember the late 80's when I sat on your lap in the Buru mathree as we went to Carnivore. You got into the club. Because you were a hot chick. I got frozen outside because of my baby face! I remember breakdancing and bartending as we did all sorts of shenanigans to fight that Lupus with you. Very many years, too many connections and moments. Decades of memories. And you were always strong, confident and positive. I celebrate and miss you. Get the party started up there and reserve a seat for me. See you there someday, hun!

Kuisan’s Tribute by Quentin Ikiki

Jeremiah 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Where do I begin? As Kuisan would always tell me… “Just Start…”

And that’s who my sister was, a person who never looked at any obstacle as insurmountable. Kuisan is the person who faced any challenge head on, never let anything or anyone tell her “she can’t.”

She was the epitome of author H. Leighton Dickson’s words:
"Fate whispers to the warrior, "You cannot withstand the storm," and the warrior whispers back, "I am the storm."

A phrase that was used in “Mission Impossible: Fall Out” – Yes she would be proud I found a way to stick this one into her tribute… We loved watching action movies together. We always planned our movie dates around what we believed to be the “most epic” releases at the time… Be it James Bond, Mission Impossible, Marvels’ Franchise movies, Lord Of The Rings… The list is endless. We would sit and analyse the movies, action sequences, story lines, 2nd & 3rd endings, punchlines & all the proverbial “shade” that would be thrown in there. Then proceed to later on watch the same movies over and over again over time.

Kui had an enormous capacity to engage and get immersed in the things she loved with the people she loved. It would be interesting seeing her come out of an action packed movie binge weekend, capped with a Sunday F1 Race of course, and watch her spend the rest of the week hosting delegates and welcoming President Obama into the country & continue to champion causes that some of us only wish we had a fraction of her passion to undertake.

From as far back as I can remember when growing up, Kuisan always seemed to be doing something & making strides… she didn’t have a pause button. Even when she was unwell, Kui would push through it & manage to get things done as they needed to be done. The moment Kui would stop, that’s when I knew she was seriously ill. And stop she did, several times… when her health was so fragile… spending nights in the ICU in critical condition, but I always had hope, I always knew she will pull through, I never once thought that she will not make it out of this one, even after spending almost 10 days in ICU, unresponsive and on life support… I knew that wasn’t the end. After her third Kidney transplant from my brother, we often joked that she’s exhausted all eligible kidneys in our family and if she ever needed another one we would have to outsource... As it turns out, she didn’t. The one thing we feared would take her away from us, turned out to be the one thing that gave her the most to live for.

Despite every time she “stopped”… She always got up & came back stronger… she became better, she became a champion. Kui was an inspiration to myself and to many of us, her sheer capacity to keep moving no matter what is something I will admire for the rest of my days, I honestly don’t know how she did it. Kui would finish a dialysis session at lunch time on a Friday and would be in Naivasha the same evening for a weekend plan and promptly be back in good time on Monday to do her next dialysis. Not even a machine that filtered her blood every 3 days could stop her from living her ultimate life. She was simply amazing.

You have stopped again… but this time you have stopped worrying, you have stopped feeling the pain, you have stopped wondering if you will need another Kidney. As stood in that hospital room & watched helplessly as you took your last breath’s I began to comprehend why it had to be this way, why you slowly had an opportunity to bid us farewell because that was your nature, you always found a way. I will never again experience your laughter, your firm conversations, your straightforward advice & the deepest hugs anyone can give. I will miss you so much Kuisan… We always competed as the “last born” siblings, we shared too many moments to put down in words and finally you now have a chance to rest and take a break from all of it.

I have spent time asking myself the difficult and often selfish questions… the why’s & the how’s… beyond not having you in this world… I now realize that you already have all the answers Kui… You always have actually.. Now you’re with the Angels, watching over us, guiding us and always being the harsh reality check person we all need in our lives. You never messed around when it came to the most important things… the things that matter… the people that matter. You were clear about your boundaries and made no apologies for them. You loved your people fiercely & unapologetically. You were fragile & strong at the same time, like water, flowing around us.

Your legacy lives on… your impact will continue to be felt. I am very fortunate to have been in the same family as you as it is not anything anyone ever choses.

Thank you Kuisan for everything. Thank you for being the person you always were… God has taken one of his best warriors to be by his side and as we continue to fight the battles earth offers, you will take care of the rest for us from above even in our moments of sorrow.

“There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition, and of unspeakable love.” Washington Irvin.

I Love you, Always & Forever.

I had the good fortune to work with Lorna in 2018. During our first meeting, she told me about a quote from Wangari Maathai: “It’s the little things citizens do. That’s what will make the difference. My little thing is planting trees.” It was clear that Lorna believed in making a difference, and she certainly did in her life. I will always remember her special energy, creativity, and commitment to doing good for the world.

From Lorna's mum:

“UCHUNGU WA MWANA AUJUAE NI MZAZI” + Brothers & Sisters

Kui started suffering from unknown illness before anyone would have imagined. At the age of 5 or thereabout she was admitted in hospital suffering nothing else but just a high temperature. This was treated by dipping her in an icy bathtub.

Next, unusual chest pains for a small girl - it turned out to be asthma. She was an active swimmer in school and the doctor instructed me that she shouldn’t swim. Doctors’ orders or not, Kui was not taking that and the next thing I knew, she was not only swimming in school with an inhaler at hand she was actually competing for her House!

Then came the final years in Nairobi Primary. She told me and I quote Mum when I grow up, I want to be the World Secretary General” that was her ambition!

She joined Moi Nairobi Girls - Her health rollercoaster breaks started losing the break fluids. The only people who can describe exactly what she went through during this period apart from her family, were her friends in school. It was hell on earth for her but she was always positive! However, during the last form four meeting In school one of the teachers pulled me aside and told me and I quote “ Mama Lorna, I’m afraid your daughter will not make it to the university” I believed him and discussed this with my Kui and found an alternative of what she was going to do.

After the exams results, Kui did not qualify to our local universities, but she had qualified to join any other university in the world. She therefore applied to the newly opened Daystar University and was accepted, all this behind my back. With Gods help we managed to raise the university 4-year fee, through Harambee. At this time the rollercoaster breaks accelerated though no one was aware of it including the doctors. During her final year, Daystar University sent her to the U.S on an exchange programme, however upon her return instead of my daughter arriving like the rest of the passenger, she was brought down with a wheelchair from the aircraft, you should all Imagine what that young girl went through!

From then onwards her bodily life went down but her spirits went up, her life had two highways, of course the uphill was always a challenge compared to the one downhill and having been in this position for over 20 years the downhill one won – and that is life.
So, my baby rest, you have given to the world the best of your ability with GOD’S HELP

SO, MY BABY REST IN PEACE

First hide from your own shadow

Then, you may cry.

Turn down all the lamps

Then, you may cry.

What do most of us do when we suffer adversity? We spread it around. We offload. We look for our nearest and dearest and our kith and kin, and even complete strangers, to complain about our lives and their myriad challenges.

This, we are told, is good for us, to talk out our tribulations with others so that they may make soothing noises.

But a few people, a precious few, are not like that.

The lines above are my translation from a ghazal – a lyrical poem – written by Nisar Tareen Jazib. It popped up on my music player randomly earlier this week, and I thought about it for long. The next day its meaning became clear when I learned that Lorna Irungu-Macharia had sundered her earthly ties.

Most Kenyans know Lorna’s story. She shot to fame in the nineties as a very young stage and television personality, popular for her bubbly and irresistible nature. Then her world changed. She was diagnosed with a severe disorder and spent decades in one form of medical treatment after another, including multiple transplants and many, many nights spent in critical-care wards. The possibility of a regular life seemed proscribed for her.

And yet. In those years of affliction she continued her media career, became a communications expert and advisor, the CEO of a well-known firm, and mentored and coached a generation of people.

I got to know her well when she joined the leadership programme I founded. She lit up the class every day; yet when the lamps were turned down she often faced more discomfort than most of us can bear.

I interviewed her four years ago (you can see it on YouTube). The vicissitudes of her health meant we had to film twice after she could not make it on the first date. The discussion focused on setbacks in life, and she shared quite openly her myriad challenges and her readiness to give up at different times in the journey.

There is something very unusual about that interview though. In spite of the topic, and in spite of her running ailment behind the scenes, Lorna’s answers are all framed in laughter and good cheer. It left me thinking for days: that we should all be inspired by those who do not think they need to add to the gloom in the world. The rain beats them without respite; yet they part the clouds for others. The interview exhausted her, but when she left the team to return to bed and recover, she left with a wave and a smile and a hearty message to all.

After Lorna passed on this week, I watched an outpouring of love on social media. Not just the usual platitudes, but heartfelt loss and sincere appreciation from the multitudes she had interacted with. I have rarely seen so many personal testimonies flowing in like a cascade, of people of all ages and walks of life, mentored and encouraged and touched by her. She did not invite us to feel sorry for her; she inspired us to do more with our own advantages.

It was not a long life, but it was a very big one.

An observation to mark Lorna’s passing. All lives are troubled; all lives are subject to twists of fate and unexpected setbacks; all are fragile. Some lives, however, are expended in complaining about this truth; a few are lived to the fullest regardless, without unnecessary complaint and fuss, and with no desire to pass personal burdens on to others. Lorna had more generosity for the people she met in her short life than those who are given good health and many more years.

That was the Lorna I knew. I am fortunate to have known a few other people just like her. They too were about smiles and positivity and blessings. These folks all felt despair, make no mistake. They all had dark days. But they turned the lamps down before crying. Their pain was their own; their goodwill was for all.

The bigger deal of life is to let go of the expectation that we are owed anything. We are not entitled to good health and auspicious fortune and the kindnesses of others. Those are gifts, and if we do not view them as such, we will spend our days bitter about what we did not get.

If you wish to honour Lorna, spend the rest of today not complaining about anything. See the gifts, not their lack.

https://www.president.go.ke/2021/03/26/president-kenyatta-mourns-former-kuria-east-mp-shadrack-manga-and-media-personality-lorna-irungu/

"In a separate message of comfort to the family, friends and relatives of the late Lorna Irungu, the President described her as an outstanding citizen who used her talent and influence to advance national interests.

He said that as a skilful and knowledgeable journalist, Lorna used her career in the entertainment industry to create space for Kenyan artists across the performing arts and worked tirelessly to promote women’s voices in media and leadership.

The Head of State recalled Lorna playing active roles in getting young people registered to vote, engaging women across the country to pass Kenya’s 2010 constitution, and advocacy that led to the passing of the Sexual Offenses Bill in 2006.

“I have known Lorna for many years and admired her fighting spirit despite the health challenges she faced. She is an inspiration to us all not to give up when things get tough,” the President eulogized.

President Kenyatta prayed to God to grant comfort to her husband Edwin Macharia and daughter Nancy Mumbi Macharia, as well as the extended family during this difficult time of mourning."

I got to know Lorna two years ago. This is more recently than many whose wonderful tributes adorn this page. Lorna : vivacious, innovative , positive and forward looking, a loyal friend and a fine professional. Over the short time we engaged, Lorna would show up, advise and encourage the Commonwealth Business Women’s Network as often as she could. Her insight was precious to us. Her smile and laughter were infectious. She stood in for Gina on occasion as an effective support.
We shall miss you dearly Lorna.
May God rest Lorna's soul in eternal peace and provide comfort to her family.

I've known Lorna since primary school...she was ahead of me. I met her again thru mutual friends after high school. When I had my son in 2007, she was unwell n still made time to come visit n play witj my son. I was showing the young man those pictures. I last saw her at the Circle of Women event at Capital club in late 2019 and we caught up briefly. I know she lived her life to the fullest. She embraced motherhood bodly and protected her daughter fiercely! She was also so dedicated to Edwin and you saw it in everything she did. Lorna will be sorely missed. This world had truly lost a good soul....but the heavens have gained yet another angel. Fry free and watch over your family n close friends....they are greatly affected by your passing....till we meet again.....

Lorna,

We have been so inspired and saddened by your memorial. Thank you for blessing us with your presence through the years.

We remember you at our home in Kilimani, coming together to back Macharia's crazy attempt to unseat Murungaru. What an impression you left. Fiery, beautiful and passionate. How happy we are that you and Edwin hit it off––you were made for each other, both so genuine and ambitious and honest. You had no time for nonsense, as one of the tributes said, "you ate life with a big spoon." We remember you at our wedding in Lamu, and then at your wedding in Nairobi.

This celebration of your life has sparked a reflection about how we spend our time on this earth. Thank you for that and for the time you spent with us.

Boniface Mwangi published a tribute .

Lorna was good people. A rare gem. We met around 2005 when she was working at the Carnivore Restaurant. My work was to photograph celebrities hanging out, hers was to ensure l didn’t disturb them. One of those encounters ended up in the local dailies after she kicked a journalist (me) out of the establishment. She was loyal to her clients and friends, a loyalty l got to experience later when we became friends.

Calling Lorna was like drinking cold water on a hot day - she would hit you with so much energy and enthusiasm and cheered you up. Every problem l threw at her would end up with “what do you want and what can I do”? She wouldn’t just listen but would seek to figure out a solution or be one herself.

Lorna was there when l quit my job and decided to focus on social change. She was there at the first protest we organised - Love protest - in her sunglasses, accompanied by her friends. We all contributed money, printed t-shirts, placards and marched. Doctors, lawyers, politicians, children, clergy, my wife and kids - we were all there. She emceed our events for free. She defended me and fought bullies on my behalf. When l walked into unfamiliar spaces with her, l knew she had my back. We last shared a public platform at the Tutu Fellow’s reunion in 2020, where l was a speaker and she was the moderator. She was so happy for me when l joined the Tutu fellows family later in the year.

She had many opportunities to give up on the belief that Kenya could be better but she never did. She loved this country.
She loved people and lived for the arts. She gave her time and money to friends and strangers. She supported the arts community. She gave her money to young, aspiring leaders running for public office and even organised fundraisers for them. Lorna and her partner, Macharia, raised money to support Ukweli Party.

On a personal level, she was a fantastic human being. She was there for me and my wife as a friend, a confidante and a comrade. We spoke last month and she was still hurricane Lorna, full of love and energy.

We have lost a good human being and Kenya has lost a true patriot. To Macharia and your daughter, Nancy, my deepest condolences. Thank you for sharing Lorna with us. Macharia, we celebrate you for the love and support you have given Lorna over the years. As you said this week, she was a phenomenal and incredible human. We are praying for you and the entire family. All of us that Lorna touched are ready to support anything to ensure her legacy of love and good cheer continues. Something to immortalize her incredibility. May the memories of the love you shared carry you through the dark days ahead.

Thank you Lorna and Macharia for using your love and influence to fight for a better Kenya.

I am grateful to have met Lorna when I moved to Nairobi 12 years ago. I felt like she adopted me. I felt that Lorna was my model for how to be a professional, woman, and person. She knew herself and shared joy and light with the world.

As I was one of a small number of Dalbergians that Edwin hired in the early days, we often got to visit with Lorna, be at their beautiful wedding, and spend time at their home. The two of them together were a family that gave of themselves, and made you always feel welcome.

On the morning of Lorna’s wedding I got to visit her at her hotel room. I was bringing the final piece of her outfit, the earrings. She was calm and glowing and ready. She was sure in her choice of Edwin as her life partner. Carole was with her and I will never forget the sister she was to Lorna not only on that day but always.

You are missed to your family and friends and the world. You were a blessing, Lorna, and still are. I’ve missed you since I left Kenya, only getting to see you every few years. Now I miss you in a much deeper way.

I send my love to your whole family, and you and they will continue to be in my prayers.

What an impact you have had on my life...after a year of college together. Half in my homeland and half in yours. Your strength taught me and humbled me. My Western arrogance was no match for your deep African roots. Because of you, I am changed for the better. (I know you would get that musical reference). For all we shared on stage, in our family homes, on safari, at Carni, and all these years over Facebook, I am eternally grateful. You were one in a million, Kui. My only regret is that we never managed an in-person reunion. I can only hope you knew how much I dreamed of that and would have found a way, if only we had had more time.

Kui's easy laughter, quick wit and overall 'joyousness' was an instant friendship draw. Her honest, strong and well articulated opinions and her dedication to social justice and human rights brought us together many times.

Kui could not bear to see injustice anywhere. She stood up and spoke out whenever necessary. She went out of her way (often putting herself at risk) to help political and human rights activists. In fact the last time Kui and I spoke at length involved such an effort on her part. She walked her talk on women's rights too -- she put her heart and soul into Martha Karua's presidential campaign.

Her generosity is legendary - on her birthday 10 years ago, she invited me and other friends to a dinner at which a famous artist was to perform. She gifted the entire proceeds to support a young girl meet medical expenses. Kui was blessed in her wellness journey and always sought opportunity to give back.

Kui and I have an outstanding ugali lunch date that we put off last year due to the pandemic. Her last message to me:

" ....as for the dress, I can get one for you when you decide to feed me with your famous ugali!

Lorna knew why she was born. It was this sense of purpose that made her so formidable in her fight against Lupus and active in many social justice causes. Also worked with her to raise money for progressive political campaigns and publicly dissect the State of the Nation not once but a couple of times. Love and will miss you Lorna. Love to you Edwin Nancy, Carol and the entire family. May you fill the vacuum she leaves soon. She would want you and us, whole, aloud and active. She, indeed, was not taught.

"When I die
when my coffin
is being taken out
you must never think
i am missing this world

don't shed any tears
don't lament or
feel sorry
i'm not falling
into a monster's abyss

when you see
my corpse is being carried
don't cry for my leaving
i'm not leaving
i'm arriving at eternal love

when you leave me
in the grave
don't say goodbye
remember a grave is
only a curtain
for the paradise behind

you'll only see me
descending into a grave
now watch me rise
how can there be an end
when the sun sets or
the moon goes down

it looks like the end
it seems like a sunset
but in reality it is a dawn
when the grave locks you up
that is when your soul is freed

have you ever seen
a seed fallen to earth
not rise with a new life
why should you doubt the rise
of a seed named human

have you ever seen
a bucket lowered into a well
coming back empty
why lament for a soul
when it can come back
like Joseph from the well

when for the last time
you close your mouth
your words and soul
will belong to the world of
no place no time"

Lorna...I struggle to write in past tense. This woman! Working with you was not without its hiccups, always the loudest in the room, full of bubbly stories about her life's experiences. Never on time to meetings but always arrived full of stories about what when and where you had been stuck, I wonder what you will say at the pearly gates when you finally arrived 20+ years into your fight with Lupus. When we needed to buckle down and work we did just that, the friendship paused and she was boss in every sense. And then we laughed after the seriousness had passed. Lorna! Not shy in any way, I appreciate the moments you took to give me guidance not just with my career but in my personal life; teaching me to be constantly curious, to never settle for being the smartest in the room, to show up with my brains to every meeting and to play my role in ensuring the team delivered. Not many people will look you in the eye and give you hard facts about yourself and how the universe works, and how as a young woman it was important not to sit and wait but charter and make your way. I learned so much through you Lorna, heard of people I would have otherwise not known, paid attention outside my own world, challenged me to do better, be better. There's so much to say but even more to hold dear, I have only known you two years but I feel the gap. I can hear your voice clearly screaming at me, CHICK!!! YOU WORE A PINK SUIT, laughing loudly at my matutas, fascinated by my dedication to get you the perfect unboxing video for your Instagram and then going in deep like you did when things had to be serious. Eish mami I will miss you truly!

I loved her, yet I had never even met her. I had only seen her on my tube (TV, that is).
This must have been from the days of KTN = Channel 62. She oozed grace and elegance on the screen.
My first cheque leaf - 001, off my first cheque book, off my first job was written to her.
She was doing an appeal for an operation, I quite can’t remember if it was lupus or kidney. It was in the early 2000s but i do recall taking a mat to drop it off at ScanAd reception. i think that’s where the drop off was, or that’s where she worked. Again, I can vaguely remember. It’s was an NIC Move account which was also a new concept in the country then. Small amount but i believe i did my bit.

By the clouds and stars and passed where no one sees
And she walks with Jesus and her loved ones waitin'

My first encounter with Lorna was while I was working as a muralist for an event at The Carnivore Grounds in 2005, where she was the entertainment manager.

She came across as kind and respected our craft. So much so that she called us back for several opportunities.

We met later on several occasions through my other work. I got the sense that she was passionate about improving Kenya for Kenyans in whatever little way she could.

Rest in peace Lorna.

Lorna was one of my most loyal clients over the past 9 years. Anytime I did her makeup she was so kind, always uplifting and such a joy to be around. The last time I worked on her early this year we took this picture together and right after we hugged and I said to her I am so grateful for her loyalty and her beautiful energy. I will miss her so much, I’m so grateful for the time we had together. Rest in Peace Lorna ♥️

I am Lorna; I am Eternity

Do not stand at my ashes and weep,
I am not there - I do not sleep.

I am the thousand winds that blow across the hills of our green lands.

I am the diamond  shimmers on Lake Victoria, the stars above your head.

I am the sunlight on ripened bananas.

I am the gentle morning rain.

As you awake with morning's quiet

I am the quiet motion of birds in circling flight.

Do not stand at my ashes and cry,
I am not there - I did not die.

I am Lorna; I am Eternity!

I will always remember her and Jimmy Gathu for working hard to make my childhood memorable.

My mother made us pray for Lorna since she became sick. We prayed for her so much. And though a stranger to me, apart from media (audio, visual and print) I grew to love her. When I began my reproductive health battle a decade + ago, her journey with Lupus was one of those that gave me hope. I always wanted to meet her and just let her know how much we prayed for her and how dearly we loved her, and how much she inspired me through difficult days. Well, my wishes came true and I met her. And I broke down crying on her shoulder. She just hugged me bewildered. In between the sobbing I tried to say my rehearsed speech of years, not sure I made sense. There are people you admire for years and wish to meet. Then you meet them and you are so disappointed. Lorna wasn't that for me. All those years, all those prayers, all that love, all that inspiration; when I met her, she was much more than I had imagined. She was human. She was kind. She was lovely.
Rest in peace Lorna Irungu - Macharia

Lorna was many things to many people . To me she was a trusted and valued friend ,a person whose advise I took seriously on whichever front . A surrogate when occasion called for it, who I did not need to prep or set boundaries for . She knew exactly what to say or do. At the end of it I would remark ‘could not have done it better’ .
Lorna came ready , a woman for all seasons. Kindness , empathy, generosity, wit &love were in her DNA.
Lorna believed in the art of the possible as demonstrated by her gallant fight with lupus for two decades. Lorna loved life and lived it to the fullest touching and impacting many positively. She was a blessing to those she encountered.
My regret is not interacting with her more especially since the COVID 19 pandemic. Not being able to visit her when she was ailing . But thank God for social media, we chatted on what’s up six days before her passing. She was hopeful and full of praise for her husband and soul mate Edwin- her words “I am lucky to have him” to which I concurred and we agreed to celebrate Edwin soon as she got better. I here an now celebrate Edwin Macharia for being there for Lorna and for being a light in her life. May you be blessed abundantly.
Lorna cared deeply for Edwin and their daughter Nancy. I pray God gives hope and grants healing to them and to the entire family. To them I say take the courage to carry on to achieve the goals you have set .
May Lorna’s memories light up your faces always . May her best show up in your lives.
I conclude by repeating what I said on Twitter- it is not possible to adequately eulogize Lorna. She was a power house ,a phenomenon, a rare happening. I am lucky to have come across her .
Rest in power dear friend and adviser . Till we meet again .

I don't have a personal story. Although she was a year ahead of me in high school, I always found her to be larger than life. We were in the same orbit but never crossed that line to friendship. But when I auditioned for drama club, and my scene was to play a makanga - she recognized how outside my comfort zone it was and spoke up for them to give me another chance. I didn't get in to drama but I was active at the periphery. I remember fondly the many cheers she led, and the jam sessions on the grass on Saturday afternoon and just how fun she was. I thought that after surviving three kidney transplants nothing could kill her. But here we are. Rest in peace Lorna Irungu. The impact you had on many lives is undeniable.

Nixon Muiruri published a tribute .

It was my first funky, at Kabbz, the year 1989, I was a rubble at Ditchez Acadamy. Yes, Ditchez ( Dagoretti High) Acadamy. I had never been to all girls' school before, and boy was I excited. For this variety show, I and my pal Humphrey had been picked to represent the rubbles on a duo rap performance. Backstage, there she was. In her elegant small body, dressed in Karl Kani Jeans overalls, a single strap loose, and a Kid and Play Box haircut. She was the events director and seeing me sweating and almost freaking out of anxiety, she approached me and asked, " Your first time ? ", "Yes ... Yes, I hesitated". " Can I share a trick with you? When you get on there, assume you are in the shower, and nobody is watching, then be you, no, matter what, just be you. Give it your all, what is the worst that can happen? " ... Oh and by the way, I am Lorna, and this here is my friend Betty, we have a performance too, so don't steal the show, ok? .... We killed it that day...

That was how I met Kui. We clicked from that day. I and if there is anything I ever learned from her was "Give it your all !!". She became my "Big Sister" and I "small bro". This happened all of high school as we crossed paths through Drama and other theater activities. Soon after high school. I left for the diaspora, but our friendship continued. During her trials with Lupus, and she may hospitalizations, I made sure I reached out. We stayed in touch for all those years and every time we talked it's like we were never apart. She introduced me to very many friends and connections in life that I am forever grateful for, most I am sure are here too.

I will never forget when she became a mum. I called to wish her a happy mother's day that just the sheer joy in her voice, was unfathomable. She was dedicated to her husband, and daughter and I know they meant the world to her. I saw her last over the summer of 2019, I was home for a brief while in August, and we talked shortly thereafter in, December when called to congratulate her on her beloved husband, Edwin making Global Managing Partner at Dalberg Advisors, at the beginning of 2020. Last year was tricky given the pandemic, but we still found time to chat on social media and privately. She was always concerned that people need to take precautions. I was worried about her and her condition, to which she assured me, she was on top of it and was not taking any chances. She encouraged us to use our social platforms to encourage people back home to mask up, sanitize, and social distance. She had the fear that people were not taking this seriously enough. Even at these times, she cared for humanity.

I can't imagine that I am here now referring to you in the past tense. To me, our spirit lives on. A bucket full of wonderful memories, and that everlasting smile that just brightens any room. Your resilience was second to none, never settling for mediocre, just perfection, never giving up, and courage to give your all. I will miss you, and forever keep your candle lit, and do more for Lupus, something I had planned on surprising you with this May at our planned reunion, for our other brother’s 50th Birthday celebrations. Through your causes and the work you have done on Lupus awareness, I accepted a postion as a board member for a US-based NGO that deals with providing medication to those with Lupus and cannot afford the treatement back home. This was all in your honor, and I promise to do all I can to help as many people as I can. I will miss you and this is how I choose to remember you. Sleep well my dear, sleep well .

To Edwin and Nancy, words fail me. I am so so sorry for your loss, and please accept our most sincere condolences from my wife, Judy, and three boys. Kui was a good person, we all loved her, and may she watch over you all. The body may have left us, but her spirit lives on.

It is well. !!

To you my friend,my sounding board,my teacher and my boss. Maybe one day I'll pull myself together and write a tribute about you but today isn't that day.

The past 3 years have been better because you were in them. Suddenly there was someone cheering me on and allowing me to make mistakes without harshly condemning me - it felt great being understood - finally! I come from a very complicated background & you saying yes to me & opening your home & life made me understand that sometimes family is who you choose. Thank you for choosing me, I'll still choose you.

You brought familiarity, peace and safety to a girl who has been searching for the love of her parents and it was finally Ok to heal that gap, accept reality and re-write the story. I hate saying this but (to be an orphan) and to be loved by someone who accepted me, just me.

So when my friends ask how I'm coping with these news, the truth is not quite ok. I've lost my family once and I've lost another again and it feels like a painful deja vu experience...That's the thing about grief

My birthday mate Lorna - some people live for many decades and leave no footsteps on earth - you were the opposite - lots and lots of footsteps - too many to follow...
It was a delight knowing you for 20 plus years. And more so, for giving me the opportunity to interview you soon after your first transplant in 1998. Little did I know you would need two more transplants but I still remember the energy and positivity about your ailment that has lived with me for years. You are the epitome of 'be your best, do your best, live life to the fullest, in spite of and despite whatever the world throws at you." You leave a rich legacy.
