A pioneer with matchless courage and superlative intellect, Prof K. Koteswara Rao is a towering personality in the field of Technical Education who almost single-handedly fostered the vision of a National Engineering Institution. He has learned to admire but not to envy, to follow but not to imitate, to praise but not to flatter, and to lead but not manipulate. NIT Warangal (formerly RECW) is fortunate to have one such visionary who strode like a colossus in its glorious history. His driving ambition and innovative abilities impacted the lives of many, and his most significant contribution was undoubtedly his early and clear vision of engineering education. Dedication became a magnificent obsession of a lifetime. He led by being one of the finest examples of a true professional in higher education

I joined the department of RECW in 1982 under the leadership of Prof Koteeswara Rao
He has left an indelible impression on the minds of people around him by his charming all rounded personality : admirable leader, amazing skills in communication, incredible understanding of men and manners,
I was fortunate to have joined during his tenure and it was a great sense of loss to know that he is no longer with us. Though it is heartening to note that he has lived his life to the fullest and in spirit he is always with us.

I HEARD A LOT ABOUT Dr.K KOTESWARA RAO GARU AND MET HIM ON COUPLE OF OCCASIONS WHEN HE WAS THE PRINCIPAL OF RECW , AFTER THE KILLING OF OUR BROTHER JANARDHAN BY POLICE IN 1975 . LATER I HAD CONVERSATION WITH HIM ON PHONE IN CONNECTION WITH BRINGING UP A MEMORIAL BOOK ON JANARDHANA RAO.HE READILY GAVE AN INTERVIEW AT HIS HOUSE TO SRI CHALASANI PRASAD WHICH WAS INCLUDED IN THE MEMORIAL BOOK ON JANARDHANA RAO .PROF.KOTESWARA RAO WAS A HUMANE AND WAS AN ABLE ADMINISTRATOR LIKED BY ONE AND ALL . Late Prof. Kotha Koteswara Rao was a legendary teacher, gifted academician and a highly efficient University administrator. In his recent demise, Andhra University and Regional Engineering College, (REC), later renamed as National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal, have lost an academic colossus of yesteryears, whose vision and abiding contribution to these institutions had far-reaching impact.
Hailing from the village of Sangam Jagarlamudi, near Tenali, Prof. Koteswara Rao joined the Engineering faculty of Andhra University in the mid-fifties and soon came to be known as a teacher of exceptional calibre. After earning his Master’s degree from the University of Iowa, Prof. Koteswara Rao returned to Andhra University in 1960, to take up teaching once again. A passionate learner, his thirst for knowledge remained unquenched and the compelling urge to study further took Prof. Rao back to the University of Iowa for his doctoral studies.
Prof. Koteswara Rao’s remained deeply attached to his motherland and firmly anchored in our traditional values. Though he could have settled abroad comfortably, he earned his Ph. D and chose to return to his teaching position at Andhra University.
In my days as an activist and student leader at Andhra University, Prof. Koteswara Rao was the Chief Warden of the University Hostels.
At a time when the University was passing through turbulent times, with his natural tact and skills of persuasion, Prof. Rao built an excellent rapport with students. A popular teacher, Prof. Rao guided and mentored hundreds of students, many of whom proved their mettle with distinction in their chosen fields.
In 1973, he responded to an SOS to take up the reins of the Regional Engineering College (REC), Warangal as its Principal. The REC’s image was being dented by Maoist student groups and unruly behaviour. Prof. Koteswara Rao’s task was clear—he had to turn REC around and set the institution firmly on the path of academic growth. The rest is history. With courage, patience and tact, Prof. Rao, during the course of his long stint at REC, transformed it into one of the most outstanding academic institutions in the country.
An academic stalwart of towering eminence, Prof. Koteswara Rao was the driving force behind a host of reforms in technical education, including milestones such the introduction of EAMCET in undivided Andhra Pradesh and the prestigious All-India GATE.
I bow my head in reverence to this legendary educationist and offer my deepest condolences to Smt. Prasuna and other members of the bereaved family.

I am Arcot Kuttiappan Balraj, S/o late Sri AN Kuttiappan (Retd. Workshop Foreman, RECW).
At the outset, the passing away of Sarvasri K. Koteswara Rao garu is an irreparable loss not only to the family but to the entire engineering fraternity and to his immensely known contacts.
Sarvasri K. Koteswara Rao was a true gentleman and a down to earth personality who enabled many individuals to perform better and better and my father was one of them. He made my father work under his close quarters and this my father told us on many occasions, which is worth mentioning again and again.
I would be a failure if I don’t mention about late Dr. K.S.V. Basivi Reddy garu with whom too, my father had a similar rich experience and it is these individuals who will always be respected and can never be forgotten.
We pray to the Almighty to give Sarvasri K. Koteswara Rao garu’s family members enough strength to bear this irreparable loss and Sadgati Praptirastu to the noble soul.

I express my deep condolence for the demise of the most impartial & the most popular Principal who had very long tenure at REC. I was a student then and hardly interacted with him but his impartial action and giving me the justice will always be in my memory. I also express my deep condolences to the whole family. may his soul rest in peace! OM SHANTI!
I just quote my personal experience and how his impartial administration has given me the justice in spite of very tough HOD Dr. Siddheshwar .
It was my first visit to REC Warangal some times in June 1974 when I was called for a written test and interview for the admission for M.Tech. Course. As we knew those days there were 2 disciplines in the mechanical engineering for post-graduation 1) IC Engines 2) Design & Production Engineering (Machine Tools). Each specialization had 10 seats but candidates appeared for written test were around 30+. I came back after written test to my native place Pune but had hardly any hope of getting admission and also I had a good job in Mumbai in one of the reputed company then. So I had no feelings about the written test.
I suddenly received a letter of admission and payment of fees but I was considered in IC Engine group. However after joining the REC, I learnt from many of my friends, seniors etc. that Machine Tools is a better line and first 10 students are always taken in Machine Tools. I too was bit aware of it with my miniature industrial experience then. So I was curious how to proceed. The main contact in administration office for most of the student was Mr. Veera swami then who could speak some Hindi and quite popular among student. He told me that my merit no in test was 13 and college had filled only 7 students for machine tools and person who was 11th was not interested to take transfer and candidate 8th & 9th did not join. So I had high hopes for transfer. As suggested by Mr. Veera Swami I first approached HOD of Mechanical Dr. Siddheshwar who was holding this position from 1962 and was considered to be the senior most and very tough HOD. When I approached him and told about the above analysis he first questioned me “how did you know that you are 13th since merit list is confidential.” So I argued “how can merit list be confidential and what is logic not to fill up balance 3 vacancies in Machine Tools when there is a demand. “ He told me that decision is yet to be taken and there are some internal candidates which we are considering. But we will let you know moment it is finalized. One Mr. Veerbhadram who was working in Workshop then under Mr. Tekoor joined Machine Tools in next 2 days. Having filled 8th person I still had good chances as 11th person was not interested. Few days went as normal and I was attending classes of IC Engines. I again approached Mr. Veera Swami. But he said the last resort is that you can approach Dr. Koteshwar Rao the Principal of REC. However he told me that even meeting him may not help as normally NO principal interferes in the decision of HOD. Moreover Dr. Siddheshwar is very senior and has his own rules so no one gets in to argument with him. I had lost all the hopes but as a last resort I thought of meeting Dr. Koteshwar Rao and just requested him to expedite the decision and also told about my case. I was totally calm for next 4 to 5 days and already lost all the hopes. However once while passing near the administrative office in the noon, Mr. Veera Swami suddenly called me and congratulated saying that my transfer is confirmed and he just received the paper ½ an hour back. I was excited and immediately met Dr. Siddheshwar with my joining report and conveying my gratitude for his kindness. He just smiled but told me that he did not like that I tried to put pressure on him directly or indirectly. I immediately understood between the lines and said sorry as it was the question of my future career.
I again went to Mr. Veera Swami and asked him what made Dr. Siddhewar to comment like this? He said normally Principal does not interfere in the decision of HOD but Dr. Koteshwar Rao had specifically asked the written justification from Dr. Siddheshwar why only 8 students are filled in Machine Tools when there are 10 seats allotted by the University. Dr. Siddheshwar had no alternative but to transfer me to Machine Tools keeping 9 students in Machine Tools and balance in IC Engines.
I was highly obliged to Dr. Koteshwar Rao thinking how impartial a Principal can be where his senior most HOD had no role to play any politics. I salute him for the great obligations which will remain in my memory for a long time.

In 1988, I was in my first year , Computer Science branch at RECW. We were listening to Maths class in the first year taught by Professor Iyengar. One day, suddenly, Prof. Koteswar Rao, our Principal along with some Heads of Department, attended the Maths class. While explaining to the class, Prof. Iyengar asked if there was another method for solving the problem. No one in our class answered the question. Immediately our Principal Koteswar Rao Sir expressed his displeasure over not getting an answer, that too in the computer Science branch.The event is still fresh in my memory. Prof. Iyengar, a great professor getting surprised when his class was attended by the Principal, indicates his commitment in discharging his duties. It reminds me of Bhagavad Gita sloka on leadership

He was a rare gentleman, loved and respected by his students even when he disciplined them. He steered REC Warangal through its most difficult days. I went to many schools and colleges but Prof. Koteshwara Rao garu is the one who has remained permanently etched in my memory.

Very very sad indeed.He was a students principal.A man of great character &was the principal during the most turbulent years of our college.He only could have handled such a turbulent period.In his passing away we have lost a great teacher loved by his beloved students even many years after his retirement.May God give strength to his family to bear this tragic loss.Tearfully I offer my condolences to the bereaved family.Om Shanti Shanti Shantih.

It is very unfortunate to listen the news of demise of sri Prof K.Koteswararao . But it is nature duty to end our life today or tomorrow as per God order. His services done to REC Warangal college were never forgettable and no one can do so effectively. His personality is so glorious and fantastic in Admin and at student development in the college

Very very sorry to learn of the sad demise of Koteswara Rao uncle. He was our inspiration in academics. We looked up to him and benefitted by his good advice. Always enjoyed discussing academics and various issues with him. He was an able administrator, intellectual, wise and good-hearted man. Will miss him dearly. ప్రముఖ విద్యావేత్త, REC వరంగల్ పూర్వ ప్రిన్సిపల్ ప్రొఫెసర్ కొత్త కోటేశ్వరరావు మృతి బాధాకరం. వరంగల్ రీజనల్ ఇంజనీరింగ్ కాలేజీకి మూడు దశాబ్దాల పాటు ప్రిన్సిపల్ గా ఆయన చేసిన సేవలు అనిర్వచనీయం. ఆయన మృతితో గొప్ప విద్యా వేత్త, పరిపాలనా దక్షుడిని కోల్పోయాం. వరంగల్ RECకి నేను ఛైర్మన్ గా ఉన్న సమయంలో ఆయన ప్రిన్సిపల్ గా ఉన్నారు. అప్పటి నుండి ఆయనతో ఎంతో గొప్ప అనుబంధం ఉంది. విద్యా విధానంలో అవసరమైన సలహాలు సూచనలు అందిస్తూ.. ప్రభుత్వాలకు తోడుగా నిలిచిన వ్యక్తి అస్తమయం విద్యా రంగానికి తీరనిలోటు. కోటేశ్వరరావు గారి ఆత్మకు శాంతి చేకూరాలని మనస్ఫూర్తిగా కోరుకుంటున్నాను. వారి కుటుంబ సభ్యులకు ప్రఘాడ సానుభూతి తెలియజేసుకుంటున్నాను.

వరంగల్ రీజనల్ ఇంజనీరింగ్ కాలేజీ విద్యార్థినెవర్నయినా కదిలించండి ... అక్కడ పదహారేళ్ల పాటు పనిచేసి రిటైరయిన ప్రిన్సిపాల్ కొత్త కోటేశ్వరరావు గురించిన ప్రస్తావన తప్పకుండా వస్తుంది. సైద్ధాంతిక విభేదాలు కర్రల దాకా వచ్చి గొడవలుగా మారుతున్న తరుణంలో కూడా ఆయన ఆర్ఇసిని అదుపు తప్పకుండా ఉంచడాన్ని వాళ్లెంతో ఇష్టంగా గుర్తు చేసుకుంటారు. మన రాష్ట్రంలో ఎమ్సెట్ ప్రారంభించడానికీ, దేశవ్యాప్తంగా 'గేట్'ను పెట్టడానికీ కారకుడాయనే. విద్యారంగం పట్ల ఎంతో ప్రేమ, అవగాహన ఉన్న 80 ఏళ్ల ఈ విశ్రాంతాచార్యుడి జ్ఞాపకాలు ఆయన మాటల్లోనే...
"తెనాలి దగ్గర సంగం జాగర్లమూడిలో పుట్టాను. ఇంటర్మీడియెట్ తర్వాత మద్రాస్ గిండీ కాలేజీలో 1947లో సివిల్ ఇంజనీరింగ్లో చేరాను. అప్పట్లో కేవలం ఇంటర్ మార్కుల ఆధారంగానే ఇంజనీరింగ్లో ప్రవేశాన్నిచ్చేవాళ్లు. అప్పటికింకా మనది అవిభక్త రాష్ట్రం కావడం, దక్కను నిజామ్ ఏలుబడిలో ఉండటంతో ఆ ప్రాంతం కాలేజీల్లో మేమెవరం పెద్దగా చేరేవాళ్లం కాదు. నేనింకా ఇంటర్లో ఉండగానే కాకినాడ, అనంతపురాల్లో ప్రభుత్వ ఇంజనీరింగ్ కాలేజీలు ప్రారంభమయ్యాయి. '51కల్లా నా చదువు పూర్తయింది. విజయవాడ పీడబ్ల్యూడీలో జూనియర్ ఇంజనీర్గా ఉద్యోగంలోకి ప్రవేశించాను.
నెలకు నూటయాభై రూపాయల జీతం. ఆ తర్వాత బర్మా షెల్ ఆయిల్ కంపెనీలో కన్స్ట్రక్షన్ ఇంజనీర్గా వెళ్లాను. కాని అలాంటి ఉద్యోగాల్లో ఇమడలేను, బోధనకయితేనే బాగా సరిపోతాను అనే నిర్ణయానికొచ్చేశాను. అప్పుడే అంటే 1955లో ఆంధ్రా యూనివర్సిటీలో ఇంజనీరింగ్ కాలేజీ ప్రారంభిస్తున్నారని తెలిసింది. దరఖాస్తు చేసి వెంటనే చేరిపోయాను. అప్పట్లో ఇంజనీరింగ్లో పీజీ మనదగ్గరెక్కడా ఉండేది కాదు. అందువల్ల ఆంధ్రా యూనివర్సిటీలో నాలాగా చేరిన అధ్యాపకులకు కొంత శిక్షణనివ్వడానికి, మా పీజీ పూర్తి చేయడానికి వీలుగా ఒక నూట ఇరవైమందిని ఎంపిక చేసి అమెరికాలోని అయోవా యూనివర్సిటీకి పంపారు.
ఆ విధ ంగా నేను 1960కల్లా మాస్టర్స్ పూర్తి చేశాను. అరవైలోనే తిరిగి వచ్చేసి యూనివర్సిటీలో రీడర్గా చేరిపోయాను. విద్యార్థులకు పాఠాలు చెబుతున్నానేగానీ, నా మనసు నా చదువు మీదే ఉండేది. మూడేళ్లలోపే మళ్లీ అయోవా యూనివర్సిటీలో చేరిపోయి నాలుగేళ్లకు పీహెచ్డీ పట్టానందుకున్నాను. అప్పుడు వచ్చి ప్రొఫెసర్గా పాఠాలు చెప్పడంలో లీనమయిపోయాను. దానితో పాటే చీఫ్వార్డెన్గా కూడా వ్యవహరించేవాణ్ని.
ఆర్.ఇ.సి. పగ్గాలు చేపట్టాను
రెండో పంచవర్ష ప్రణాళికలో ప్రతిపాదించిన ప్రాజెక్టులు, కర్మాగారాల నిర్మాణానికి అవసరమైన ఇంజనీర్లను మనమే తయారుచేసుకోవాలని నాటి ప్రధాని జవహర్లాల్ నెహ్రూ భావించారు. దానికోసం దేశాన్ని నాలుగు జోన్లుగా తీసుకొని ఒకో జోన్లో రెండేసి చొప్పున అత్యున్నత ప్రమాణాలతో ఎనిమిది ఇంజనీరింగ్ కాలేజీలను ప్రారంభించారు. వాటిలో మొట్టమొదటిది వరంగల్ రీజనల్ ఇంజినీరింగ్ కాలేజీ (ఆర్ఇసి). దాన్ని నెహ్రూ స్వయంగా తన చేతుల్తో '59లో ప్రారంభించారు. అంత ఉదాత్త లక్ష్యంతో ప్రారంభించిన ఆర్ఇసిలో ఒక దశలో విద్యార్థుల్లో క్రమశిక్షణ తగ్గుతూ వచ్చింది.
ఆ ప్రాంగణంలో ఎప్పుడేం జరుగుతుందో ఎవరూ ఊహించలేని పరిస్థితి వచ్చేసింది. వాళ్లను అదుపు చెయ్యడానికి ఆర్మీ అధికారి కృపలానీని ప్రిన్సిపాల్గా నియమించింది ప్రభుత్వం. అతను ఆర్మీ తరహాలో వారిని కట్టడి చెయ్యాలని ప్రయత్నిస్తే, విద్యార్థులు మరింతగా చెలరేగారు. అలాంటి వాతావరణంలో అప్పటి ప్రభుత్వ ప్రధాన కార్యదర్శి హెచ్సీ శరీన్ 'హౌస్ ఈజ్ ఆన్ ఫైర్..' అని వార్త పంపి నన్ను వచ్చెయ్యమన్నారు. రెండు నెలలు సమయం అడిగితే, 'రెండు వారాల్లో వచ్చేసెయ్' అన్నారు. అలా వరంగల్ ఆర్ఈసీకి ప్రిన్సిపాల్గా నేను పగ్గాలు చేపట్టాను.
కష్టపడి పట్టాల మీదికెక్కించాను
వరంగల్ ఆర్ఇసి గోడనానుకుని ఉండే ప్రాంతంలోనే కొండపల్లి సీతారామయ్య, సత్యమూర్తి వంటివారు మిషనరీ స్కూళ్లలో పాఠాలు చెప్పేవారు. మా విద్యార్థులు వారిని కలిసి, ప్రసంగాలు విని ఉత్తేజితులై కొత్త భావజాలంతో వచ్చేవారు. అందువల్ల కాలేజీలో క్రమంగా ఆర్ఎస్యు (రాడికల్ స్టూడెంట్స్ యూనియన్), పీడీఎస్యు వంటివి చాలా బలపడ్డాయి. వీటికి దీటుగా ఆర్ఎస్ఎస్ ప్రాబల్యమూ పెరిగింది. రెండు రకాలవాళ్లూ చాలా దృఢమైన ఆలోచనలతో అభిప్రాయాలతో ఉండేవారు. ఇద్దరూ విడివిడిగా బీదాబిక్కీకి సాయం చేసేవాళ్లు. కానీ క్యాంపస్లో ఎప్పుడే అభిప్రాయ భేదాలు తలెత్తి ఎలా గొడవలుగా రూపాంతరం చెందుతాయో అనేలాంటి పరిస్థితి ఉండేది. అంతకుముందున్న అరాచక పరిస్థితి వల్ల కాలేజీకి కేంద్ర నిధులు రావడం ఆగిపోయాయి.
నేను వెళ్లేసరికి అప్పులవాళ్లంతా అడ్మినిస్ట్రేషన్ బిల్డింగ్ చుట్టూ తిరుగుతూ కనిపించారు. విద్యార్థులు మెస్ బిల్లులు ఏడాదిగా కట్టడం మానేశారు. వారికి కాస్త గడువిచ్చి ఆర్నెల్లలో అన్ని బకాయిలనూ వసూలు చేశాం. శరీన్గారితో మాట్లాడి పరిస్థితిని కాస్త చక్కదిద్దేసరికి నిధులు వచ్చాయి. దాంతో పాత అప్పులు తీర్చి కాలేజీని పట్టాల మీదికెక్కించాను.
ఒక వారంలోపే ఆర్ఈసీ 'లేడీస్ క్లబ్' వాళ్లొక ఫంక్షన్ పెట్టుకున్నారు. అధ్యాపకులందర్నీ కుటుంబాలతో సహా పిలిస్తే వెళ్లాం. ఈ కార్యక్రమం నడుస్తుండగానే దూరంగా నినాదాలు వినిపించాయి. అది అక్కడ మామూలే అని మేమెవ్వరం పట్టించుకోలేదు. నెమ్మదిగా అవి మాకు చేరువయ్యాయి. ఆర్ ఎస్యు వాళ్లు వచ్చి టీచర్లను చుట్టిముట్టి దూషించడం మొదలెట్టారు. నేనే వారి ధ్యేయమని స్పష్టమయిన తర్వాత టీచర్లంతా నా చుట్టూ ఒక వలయంగా ఏర్పడి కారుదాకా నెట్టుకుంటూ వచ్చి కారె క్కించేశారు.
నా కారు కదిలింది, గొడవ వెనకబడింది. హఠాత్తుగా నాలో ఏదో తెలియని భావం ఉప్పొంగింది. ఎన్నాళ్లీ గొడవలు, ఇదేదో తేలిపోవాలి, నేను ఏమయిపోయినా పర్లేదు అనిపించింది. వెంటనే కారాపి దిగి 'రండి మాట్లాడుకుందాం, ఇదేదో ఇవాళే తేల్చుకుందాం' అని గట్టిగా అరిచాను. ఏమనుకున్నారో ఏమో, వాళ్లు నావైపు నాలుగడుగులు వేసి, తర్వాత వెనుదిరిగి నినాదాలు చేసుకుంటూ వెళ్లిపోయారు. ఆరోజు వాళ్లు ముందడుగేసి కొడితే ఏమయిపోయేవాణ్నో చెప్పలేను.
అయితే ఈ సంఘటన తర్వాత ఇక గొడవలే లేవంటే నమ్మండి. అధ్యాపకుల్లో, వారి కుటుంబాల్లో అందరిలో భద్రతాభావం పెరిగింది. అప్పుడు ఆ దాడికి నాయకత్వం వహించిన పీడీఎస్యు విద్యార్థి తర్వాత ప్రపంచ బ్యాంకులో ఉన్నతోద్యోగంలో కుదురుకున్నాడు. అప్పటి ఆర్ఎస్యుకు సారధ్యం వహించిన జనార్దన్ అనే విద్యార్థి పోలీసు కాల్పుల్లో మరణించాడు. ఇది తల్చుకున్నప్పుడు మాత్రం నాకు బాధగా ఉంటుంది. వేడి రక్తం ఉన్న విద్యార్థులతో సామరస్యపూర్వకంగా వ్యవహరిస్తేనే మేలు జరుగుతుందని నా నమ్మకం. అందుకే వాళ్లడిగే ప్రశ్నలకు, లేవనెత్తే సమస్యలకు అన్నిటికీ లాజికల్గా సమాధానాలిచ్చే ప్రయత్నం చేసేవాడ్ని. అవగాహనాపూర్వకంగా మాట్లాడితే వాళ్లూ అర్థం చేసుకునేవారు. నన్ను వేలెత్తి చూపడానికి ఏమీ లేకుండా చేసుకున్నాను. పదహారేళ్ల పాటు నేను ఆర్ఈసీ ప్రిన్సిపాల్గా పనిచేశాను. వరంగల్ ఆర్ఈసీ అంటే దేశవ్యాప్తంగా పేరుప్రతిష్టలు వచ్చాయి.

ఫెయిల్యూర్లూ ఉన్నాయి...
మా పిల్లలు అమెరికాలో స్థిరపడ్డారు. ఏడాదికోసారి నేను అక్కడికి వెళ్లినప్పుడు నా పూర్వ విద్యార్థులు చిన్నచిన్న 'గెట్టుగెదర్లు' ఏర్పాటు చేస్తుంటారు. ఇప్పుడు చాలా బ్యాచ్లు సిల్వర్ జూబ్లీ ఉత్సవాలు ఏర్పాటు చేసి నన్ను ఆహ్వానిస్తుంటారు. అప్పట్లో నేను వాళ్లకు ఎలాంటి పనిష్మెంట్లు ఇచ్చానో గుర్తు చేసి మరీ నవ్వుకుంటారు. వాళ్లతో కలిసి ఒక డ్రింక్ సేవిస్తే చాలు... ఎంతో సరదా పడిపోతారు. ఒకటి మాత్రం చెప్పగలను.. అప్పట్లో వారివి కేవలం సైద్ధాంతిక విభేదాలే. ఇప్పట్లాగా కులం, ప్రాంతం వంటి అంశాల మీద విద్యార్థులు మాట్లాడుకునేవారే కాదసలు.
నేను పనిచేసిన కాలంలో ఏ అపజయాలూ లేవా అని మీరు అడగొచ్చు. ఉన్నాయ్! వరంగల్ ఆర్ఈసీని ఒక డీమ్డ్ యూనివర్సిటీ స్థాయికి తీసుకు రావాలని నేను బలంగా కోరుకున్నాను. అది అవలేదు. ఇప్పుడు దాన్ని 'నేషనల్ ఇన్స్టిట్యూట్ ఆఫ్ టెక్నాలజీ'గా వ్యవహరిస్తున్నారు. ఒక రకంగా నేను కలలుగన్న స్థాయి వచ్చినట్టే, కానీ చాలా ఆలస్యంగా. ఎన్ని పదవుల్లో ఎంత సమర్థంగా పనిచేసినా, మనస్ఫూర్తిగా పాఠం చెప్పిన తర్వాత చేతులకంటిన సుద్దముక్క పొడిని కడుక్కోవడానికి వెళతాం చూడండి... అప్పుడు మనసు పొందే సంతృప్తిని మాటల్లో చెప్పలేం. నావరకూ నాకు పాఠం బాగా చెప్పినరోజు కడుపు నిండిపోయేది.
ఎమ్సెట్ మొదలైంది నాతోనే...
'83లో ఎన్టీఆర్ అధికారంలోకి వచ్చినప్పుడు మర్యాదపూర్వకంగా ఒకసారి కలిశాను. విద్యారంగాన్ని ప్రైవేటుపరం చెయ్యడం గురించి మా అభిప్రాయాలు చాలావరకూ కలిశాయి. దివిసీమ ఉప్పెనప్పుడు విరాళాల కోసం ఎన్టీఆర్, అక్కినేని, జమున అందరూ మా కాలేజీకి వచ్చి ప్రదర్శన ఇచ్చారు. అలా మరికొంత పరిచయం పెరిగింది. ప్రైవేటు ఇంజనీరింగ్ కాలేజీల విధివిధానాల గురించి ఒక అత్యున్నత స్థాయి కమిటీ వేసినప్పుడు ఎన్టీఆర్ మళ్లీ నన్ను పిలిపించారు. మా సిఫారసుల మేరకు వాటిలో కాపిటేషన్ ఫీజును రద్దు చేసింది ప్రభుత్వం.
కాలేజీల మనుగడ కోసం నిధులివ్వమంటే కాలేజీకి ముప్ఫైనలభై లక్షల రూపాయలిచ్చింది. ఎన్టీఆర్ చాలా మొండి ధైర్యం ఉన్న నాయకుడు. నేటి రాజకీయ నాయకులు అంత గట్టి నిర్ణయాలు తీసుకోలేరు. అలాగే ఇంటర్మీడియెట్ తర్వాత ఎమ్సెట్ను ప్రవేశపెట్టాలన్న ఆలోచనను నేనాయన ముందుంచినప్పుడు 'గో అహెడ్' అన్నారు. దానివల్ల విద్యార్థులు తమకిష్టమైన కాలేజీలను ఎంచుకునే సదుపాయం ఏర్పడింది. అలాగే కేంద్ర కమిటీలో సభ్యుడిగా ఉన్నప్పుడు ఇంజనీరింగ్ పీజీ కోర్సుల్లో ప్రవేశానికి 'గేట్' ఉండాలని దాని విధివిధానాలను రూపొందించాం.
నాణ్యత ఏదీ?
రిటైరయ్యేనాటికే నాకు చదవడం కష్టంగా ఉండేది. జన్యుపరమైన లోపాల వలన రెటీనా క్షీణించిపోయి ఐదారేళ్లుగా నా కంటి చూపు పూర్తిగా పోయింది. ఇప్పుడు ఇంజనీరింగ్ విద్య స్థితిగతులు చెప్పమంటే ఏం చెప్పేది? రాష్ట్రంలో సుమారు ఏడు వందల కాలేజీలున్నాయి. కొన్నిచోట్ల సీట్లే భర్తీకాని పరిస్థితి. చేరుతున్న విద్యార్థులకు సరైన దిశానిర్దేశం చెయ్యగలిగిన నాణ్యత ఉన్న అధ్యాపకులు తక్కువ. కాలేజీలు ఎంతసేపూ పీహెచ్డీ ఉందా, ఎన్ని పేపర్లు పబ్లిష్ చేశారన్నదానినే చూస్తున్నాయి తప్ప బోధనలో నాణ్యతను గమనించడం లేదు.
దానివల్లే దొంగ పీహెచ్డీలు, కాపీలు పెరిగిపోతున్నాయి. పీహెచ్డీ అని వచ్చినవారు ఫండమెంటల్ ప్రశ్నలడిగితే చెప్పలేకపోవడం నేను గమనించాను. ఇది నాకు ఆవేదన కలిగిస్తోంది. టీచింగ్ అంతా కంప్యూటర్ల ఆధారంగా నడవటం అంత మంచిది కాదు. కానీ ఐఐటీల్లో కూడా ఇదే పరిస్థితి ఉంది. టీచింగ్లోనే కాదు, ఏ రంగంలోనైనా సమగ్రమైన అధ్యయనం, పునాదులు బలంగా ఉన్నవారు తక్కువయిపోతున్నారు. అలాగే ఏ విషయానికయినా గట్టిగా నిలబడే తత్వం సమాజంలో తగ్గిపోతోంది.

We lost a great administrator indeed who run the Institute in a terribly disturbed campus during pre and post emergency situations and helped the students obtain their graduations on time. With this most of the needy students got quick employment too.
My hearty respects to the departed soul and deep condolences to his family.

I remember how he interviewed me during admission in 1976, guided us all of our batch mates through those valuable five years and we made a career and living using the degree certificate, that has his signature.
He was a pioneer who returned from USA and made a difference in the lives of so many in so many ways.
I salute him for his guidance/services to people and submit my Sraddhaanjali, with a prayer

I did my graduation in RECW during 74-79.
He's much more than a teacher.
Due to the recent Covid situation, I failed to be in touch with him, during his last days.
That pains me; though I'm happy that he lived Fully, without giving much trouble to others, in his last days.
I miss him a lot.

I am saddened to hear the demise of Tata Garu
My husband- Aravind Sir used to always refer to him as a friend and told me so many stories of his association in early times and especially during his masters in AUCE times.
After reading and learning about him recently through the book that was printed, the NITW condolence meeting and news articles after he passed away- I realize what an immensely great impact he had in his times and what a different man he was to my husband at a different stage. It was unique and strange to know!
I have mentioned to Aravind Sir, many times that we should have met him as soon as we were married, but that didn’t happen. I have spoken to Tata garu over the phone once and that was my lucky call as I see it now.
Courage to Nainamma in these times, Sir tells me that she is a tough person and that I should learn cooking for her.
