Joseph Warren Boivin

Joseph Warren Boivin

December 28th, 1946 - September 8th, 2022

Biography

On September 8, 2022, our beloved husband, father, brother and friend, Joseph Warren Boivin, passed away  in Yarmouth Nova Scotia after a brief but bravely fought battle with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Joe was born on December 28 1946, in Brockville Ontario, to Wilfrid and Mary Boivin (nee Rumbelow).

As a young man Joe left home in Ottawa for the wild west, where he met his soulmate Janet  (nee Horton) in Calgary in 1967. They were married in December 1969 in Calgary.

Joe and Jan have two children, Nicole (Mike Petraglia) and Marc (Natasja Østergaard-Boivin). His four cherished grandchildren, Eva, Isabelle, Sam and Camilla will miss their papa or farfar’s hugs.

Joe’s loss is deeply felt by his older brother Dan Boivin (Carolynne), younger brothers John Boivin (Julie Robinson), William Boivin (Carolyn), Tom Boivin (Phoutthalak Phichit), and younger sister Suzanne Houle (Craig). He is pre-deceased by his sister Mary-Lou Simpson (Stuart).

Joe was an entrepreneur who ran his own business, Cormetrics, for more than 34 years. His career took him from northern Alberta to the Middle East, consulting for the oil industry. He was a member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), and was awarded its distinguished service award in 2012.

Joe enjoyed travelling for work and pleasure, visiting numerous countries with his wife, including Costa Rica, Laos, Japan, France and the Netherlands.

Joe had a lifelong love of books and reading, and always had a quick quip to share from a favourite author or poet. He loved a good pun. Always curious, he sought out knowledge and loved to share it with others. In his retirement, he was an active member of CALL (Calgary Association of Lifelong Learners) and the public representative of the Animal Care Committee at the University of Calgary.

Joe spoke out about injustice great and small, and encouraged others to engage in making the world a better place. Joe devoured the Globe and Mail daily, keen to keep up with the issues and seeking solutions.

Joe had the biggest, welcoming heart, and entertaining was his passion. He was involved in cooking groups, book clubs and numerous other social activities. He enjoyed bike riding, kayaking, fly fishing, skiing, hiking and hockey – and was a faithful fan of his hometown Calgary Flames and Stampeders.

For the last 20 years, Joe and Jan spent summers at their cottage on Allens Lake, near Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. It was his place of peace and comfort, and we are thankful he got to spend his final days in a place he cherished.

He will be forever loved and is already deeply missed by his family and friends, both near and far.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and health care workers at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville and QEII Building in Halifax for their care for Joe.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in Joe’s name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (https://www.bloodcancers.ca/).

Dear Jan and family, we are just finding out about Joe's passing and I must say we are in shock and deeply saddened. Our heartfelt condolences to you all. Joe was a kind man and the best neighbor anyone could ask for. When we moved to Hawkwood, Joe and Jan were the first to invite us to a neighborhood Christmas gathering which made us feel welcome from the start. Our boys always loved to peak over the fence to see what Joe was up to and just say hi. This past summer before making our move to Europe, we were truly blessed to spend a wonderful evening with our wonderful neighbours Joe and Jan.
Sending lots of love.

It breaks my heart that I can’t attend Joe’s celebration of life today…. I have every symptom of Covid, but am testing negative so far. I just won’t take the risk of passing anything along!
I will miss knowing that Joe is “just away at the cottage and I can catch up with him once he’s back”. He was a dear friend, a beloved mentor, and a wonderful human being. Jan… I’m So sorry for your loss of one who so obviously loved and doted on you. I loved seeing him so casually put his arm around you or place his hand on your back at folk club.

Jan, Nicki & Marc and extended family. Words cannot begin to convey the indelible impact that Joe had on my life. From father figure to boss to mentor through it all he treated me with kindness & respect and even more so he treated me like family. So much so he trusted me with the closely held recipe to 'Green Bean Supreme' and swore me to secrecy with its contents.

I count myself lucky that he was my employer during my father's illness and passing. There was never a need to ask so that I could spend with my dad during office hours and for that I'm grateful.

Even after he sold the company he would still pop by and check in and ask how things were. I looked forward to his sing-songy Helloooo Mike as his customary greeting.

My condolences to the family on the loss of Joe. He will be greatly missed.

Happy to share this special memory. Many of us in Halifax to celebrate Class of 66 50th Nurses Reunion in 2016. Flash back to Calgary 1967, some of us lived, worked @ Foothills Hospital and surprisingly met & married our future husbands. I clearly recall stepping into the elevator @ Queens apartments, where we all lived, would bump into Joe whose eyes would light up & who would ask with anticipation “ have you seen Jan today, what is she doing, have you talked to her” ? The beginning of a long, loving & happy marriage. May love & kindness comfort you in the days ahead, love Linda & Brian Walsh

Dear Janet, Nicky, Marc and families,
We were both shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Joe’s death. He was just a wonderful guy with great wit, charm and a sharp intellect. We shared lots of chuckles and his smile that stretched the width of his face was infectious. In fact his last retort to my text was “ I’m not pining for the fjords yet “. Janet let us not forget “ The Fixer “.
You have our heartfelt sympathy and you will always be in our thoughts.
