Hazel Malone

April 3rd, 1924 - November 29th, 2019

Biography

Memorial services for Hazel Malone on April 20, 2020, have been postponed until further notice.

Hazel Mauddean Sishc Malone was born April 3,1924 at home on the Sishc family farm located 7 miles southeast of Lingle,Wyoming. She was the fifth of seven children.  All of the children had chores to do on the farm. Hazel’s duties included feeding the chickens and taking care of the garden. Hazel often mentioned her fond memories of summers spent in the family garden and her love of gardening was with her always.

As a child her family moved to Torrington in 1937 when her father, Julius Sishc, had decided to start manufacturing his invention of a sugar beet loader.  Hazel was always very proud of her father and all of his accomplishments. Two of Julius’s inventions for farm machinery qualified for patents with the United States Patent Office and his plants in Torrington, Wyoming and Gering, Nebraska at one point employed 150 people.

Hazel met Cleo Malone in 1941 at a dance here in Yoder. They were married November 29th 1941 and moved to Seattle Washington where Cleo was stationed during World War II.  Upon Cleo’s discharge from the Army in 1946 they returned to Yoder. In 1951 they bought the property at 3rd and Main. It has gone through many renovations until Cleo refused to do any more remodeling or improvements.  It was important to Hazel that her corner of the world looked its best. It was well lit at Christmas and the summers were filled with flowers.

Hazel was a long time member of the Yoder community. She was a Sunday School teacher, member of the Yoder Women's Club for 70 years and served on many committees.  The Malone household was always a hub for gatherings and entertaining, particularly for school reunions.

In 2015 Hazel moved to Douglas WY to downsize from her long time home here in Yoder and to be closer to Susan. She enjoyed her little apartment and made some new friends. She could visit with her long time friend Marg Yates and her Brother in-law Bud  Moore, who lived right upstairs.

Hazel had an amazing ability to meet people and make friends. Whenever she got off of a plane, in San Antonio, she would have an entourage of new friends to introduce to Penny. They had taken care of her through her travels, and she could share their entire lives stories.

She is survived by daughter Susan May Schaneman, married to Steve Scaneman, son Micheal Cleo Malone and wife Barbara Malone, Penny Lynn Malone married to Jeff Chesnut, grandchildren Tori Osborn, Troy Scaneman and Jacob Schaneman, Great grandchildren Elandra and Elric Osborn.

She is preceded in death by her parents Juluis and Stella (Stout) Sishc, husband Cleo Malone, daughter Judy and son Bruce, brothers Howard, Chester and Johnny Sishc, sisters Lillie Foreman, Marie Frances and Bethel Nolan, 7 nephews and 3 nieces.

My Aunt Hazel was always there for me growing up. I would get frustrated on Saturday mornings as I had to wait for Mike to finish his chores and get his work inspected before being allowed to go out and play! A very steady task master and a compassionate but demanding woman. As an adult I would pop in and Aunt Hazel would take a break from the tasks she would be doing just to talk for awhile then she would always convince me to help her with whatever task she was doing. I will miss her and hold her memory fondly. All of my Colorado grandchildren except for the youngest were fortunate enough to meet her and go to the park in Yoder to play. Aunt Hazel was so proud of her tea pot collection and even gave me one. It is now with my daughter and she cherishes it. You deserve a rest you beautiful lady! Rest In Peace!!

Terry your memories of my Mother made me think back to my days of cleaning the various places in the house that were assigned to me, especially on Saturday mornings. I think that my mother typically had a least five if not six vacuum cleaners in her possession. I hope that Heaven is clean enough for her.
I know that she cared a great deal for you and I am looking forward to seeing you at her Memorial Service.

We all knew that Aunt Hazel was Focused and Determined (another way of saying hardheaded and stubborn). She came by that honestly by growing up with German heritage and the depression. Her sternness was justified (in my case anyway). Remember your dad called me Terrible Terrance, and boy, how right he was! I never felt unloved at your house. My future trips to Wyoming will always include a drive by of that fabulous house that transformed so greatly over the years. Mike it will be great seeing you if I am able to make it out there when we are able to finally give our respects to her. I love all of you!!

I have many wonderful memories of my grandma Hazel, but the ones that stand out the most are being in the kitchen with here. She taught me how to bake all those wonderful candies and other treats she made for others. She always was baking for others and loved doing it. She had a very giving spirit. I was blessed to have her as my grandma and to be able to learn so much from her.
