Glenn Shattuck, Jr.

Glenn Shattuck, Jr.

October 1st, 1927 - October 28th, 2020

Biography

Glenn Shattuck, age 93, died peacefully in Greenport, Long Island on Wednesday, 28 October 2020.

Born in Glens Falls, New York, to Wardi “Rose” Seikaly and Glenn Shattuck, Sr., Glenn combined his main passions of math and music throughout his life. He studied piano, performed as a concert pianist, and also learned the bagpipes. After high school, he served in the Army Air Force from 1944-47 as a radio operator and then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received an engineering degree. While working at IBM as a systems analyst, Glenn also obtained a master’s degree from New York University.

Glenn was married in 1951 to Martha Dickinson in Delmar, New York, and they moved to Wilton, Connecticut with their four daughters in 1963. In 1979, Glenn and Martha divorced, and in 1985, Glenn and Alice Ayers married in Wilton. Glenn and Alice shared their love for music by singing in their church choirs and in the Wilton Singers, a group for which Glenn was a founding member. Glenn served as an elder in the Wilton Presbyterian Church, where he played organ, piano, and thebagpipes. Declared Wilton’s Town Bagpiper Emeritus in 2010, Glenn often led the Memorial Day Parade and other events.

In 2010, Glenn and Alice moved from Wilton to Peconic Landing, a retirement community in Greenport, Long Island, where Glenn continued to play the bagpipes for occasions such as Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Veterans Day. He also performed piano concerts and sang in the highly popular annual Christmas concert by the Peconic Bay Masterworks Choir. In the last few years, as Glenn’s health declined, his caregiver, Vytautas Vilcinskas, became a valued friend.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Alice Ayers; his daughters, Lisa Gibson, Sandra Shattuck, Karen Shattuck, and Martha Seikaly; his stepchildren, Emory Daniel Ayers, Jr. (spouse, Anthony Seguino), Elizabeth Ayers Cabrera, and Jonathan Wight Ayers (spouse, Heryun Ayers); his grandchildren, Nathaniel Gibson, Kallie Gibson, Renée Gibson, Erin Gibson, and Josh Shattuck, and his great-grandchildren, Ozhean Gage and Leilani Davis; and four step-grandchildren, Alice Marie Cabrera (spouse, Dan Baisley), Kimberly Danielle Ayers, Lauren Juliet Ayers, and Margaret Brooke Ayers.

Glenn was predeceased by his son-in-law, Dwight Delano Gibson (June 1987) and his sister, Marie Louise Creson(February 2011).

If a memorial is planned, we will announce details on this site on the Events page.

Glenn Shattuck Jr’s father was my grandfather’s brother. Glenn and I are first cousins once removed. He would be so proud of me for remembering our lineage. Glenn was an expert at mapping out the family tree which was a center piece at our family gatherings.
It was Glenn and Alice who hosted the family reunions on the Shattuck farm in Hague NY in the beautiful Adirondack mountains. We have fond memories of swinging in the hammock, getting pulled behind the tractor, watermelon seed spitting contests, tables full of food, and of course the bagpipes.
Although Glenn was my cousin, all of us called him Uncle Glenn. He was a wonderful person, smart, talented, and compassionate. He not only played beautiful music on the piano and bagpipes, he created fond memories for his family and friends.
We thank you and miss you. Rest In Peace Uncle Glenn.

All of those memories Claudia shared from the Shattuck farm in Hague were very formative and special times for me as well. Our 4th of July gatherings were too much fun, all thanks to Glenn. Such a comforting presence and he delighted in the whole family’s enjoyment. He holds a very special place in our hearts. He will be fondly remembered and very much missed. (Claudia’s nephew)

Uncle Glenn, as my sister Claudia and I called him, was a special person, with an engaging personality. His warm smile and easy manner always made you comfortable to be around him. The family reunion he and Alice held at the Shattuck farm in 1995 is one I will always cherish. I also recall the picture of his four curly haired girls in my fathers boat. Let me know if you want to reenact that photo on my boat on Sacandaga Lake (Shattuck reunion?). My condolences to everyone.

I would love to host a Shattuck reunion. My lake house has 4 BR’s and plenty of space for a large gathering. Hoping next summer will be Covid free and you all can visit. Use my email or phone number below if you want to make a plan. We can boat, barbecue, tube, jet ski, ski and maybe slalom. Till then stay safe and be happy, as Uncle Glenn would wish.

Glenn welcomed me to Wilton Presbyterian Church in 2004. He always offered up a smile. One time he came up to me and said, “you’re terrific.” I can’t remember what I did but I do remember how he made me feel. The Wilton community and WPC was better because of his presence.

The angels are blessed to have my dear friend among them. I am sure the music will be ever more delightful. I was honored to be able to call, this sweet and gentle man, my friend. I looked for one of my favorite photos of Glenn and Alice at a family wedding. Maybe I'll find it later.

The first time I met my dear cousin Glenn in person was in 1973 when we lived in Brussels and he stopped by with his daughter Karen on their way back from a visit to the Middle East. It was the start of a long-term close relationship as we continued to be in touch from thereon. When we moved to Connecticut in 1994 we had a chance to interact more in person and visit with him and Alice, it was just wonderful.
Glenn was very much interested in his mother’s, my aunt Rose, Palestinian heritage and he would even recite some Arabic sayings that he must have learned from his loving mother. When my son Marc and I started a project to write a book on the Seikaly Family, our mothers’ family, Glenn was very excited and active in providing information to help in this process. Our last visit was in November 22, 2013 when Katrine and I visited Glenn and Alice in Greenport, we spent a lovely day with them. We took some photos (see attached) and one of the photos made it to the Family Book. Glenn served his country and his academic accomplishment are well recognized. His musical talents were so good and he always played the piano and once the bagpipe when we visited in Connecticut and Greenport.
Glenn was a very warm and loving cousin and will always be in our thoughts, may god bless his soul.

Glenn's smile could light up any room! His kindness and gentle humor made everyone around him feel comfortable and loved. He was always interested in others, and shared his many talents so generously. Enoch and I were honored to know Glenn and Alice as friends in Wilton and to make beautiful music with them in the Wilton Presbyterian Choir, the Wilton Singers and Wilton Dearest. No one would ever have guessed Glenn was 93! He always looked so young. I guess living a life filled with joy and love will do that for a person. Alice, my heart goes out to you and to all of Glenn's beautiful children and grandchildren. Glenn left this world a wonderful legacy in you. With much love.

As a radio operator, Dad learned Morse Code, and he used to drive us nuts at the dinner table when he would break out in Morse Code: da-di- di-da-da, or something along those lines. He'd say the code really fast and then translate. He also told jokes, really bad puns, and posed riddles for us to solve. So here's a line of Morse Code from his daughters: We love you, Dad = .-- . / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..- --..-- / -.. .- -..

Oh how I have missed his smile and gentle humor. Not to mention his music. I associate so many wonderful and important occasions with his bagpipes. Listening to him in collaboration with Wilton’s other
musical prodigy Al Galletly was soul moving.

Mr. Shattuck was a wonderful presence in my life. Always with a handsome smile and happy demeanor. I have many memories of the Shattuck Family...four Alden girls and four Shattuck girls...what a fun combination. I remember going to Scottish Games in Connecticut...there is now an annual Scottish Games in Look Park, Florence, MA and I try to attend as often as I can always remembering Mr. Shattuck’s wonderful performances. I send Alice and the Shattuck “girls” my love and warm hugs...losing a parent is really hard...it’s been six years since Dad passed away. Be well and know you each are being thought of.
