While I wouldn't say Emre was a friend - we didn't socialize - but the relationship wasn't purely attorney/client, we'd chat about other things, he always took the time to have a personal relationship and to put you at ease and discuss anything funny or unusual that was outside purely the immigration 'game'. He assisted me over the course of about 15 years from arriving in the US through to a green card. It's a strange relationship in immigration that when I got the green card I joked that 'we'd not see each other again'. But then there was citizenship in which he steered me and told me there was no real need in my case for an attorney.
A genuinely warm & selfless man. He'll be missed

I did not say it enough when I should have, but Emre, you were there for me when no one else was. I still remember how nervous I was meeting with you for an informational interview because so many lawyers had told me they saw no reason to invest in a foreigner. You laughed as you looked through my resume and made me feel at ease for the first time in months. I did not expect you to remember me, but you did. And you gave me my shot. I will never forget that. You were the one who set me on my path and allowed me to grow into the attorney I am today and for that I will forever be grateful. You celebrated every case success I had and your ability to cheer me on when I would work on similarly horrible fact patterns was unmatched. I still remember how you chased me out of your office laughing when I accidentally messed up the lucky magnet you had at your door and while we were waiting to find out if my H-1B was selected and what I did was bad luck. Even in moments when we disagreed, I now realized you gave me more respect than most others would because you engaged and never shut me down or pull the boss card on me. I will miss you immensely and I wish I had a chance to tell you these things when the time was right. Rest in peace.

My dear Emre... I can still hear you snapping your fingers and whistling as you pass by my door each morning. Your larger-than-life laugh is still fresh in my mind. You were like a brother. I will always cherish the advice; encouragement and the love you gave. I will hold the many special moments we shared over the years- the good and bad- in my heart forever. May you sleep in eternal peace, dear friend. Seni çok seviyorum. Tanrı sizi ve ailenizi her zaman korusun.

It's heartbreaking to think that he's no longer with us, especially at such a young age. His love and spirit will live on through his children, his family, and all those whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace, knowing that he was loved and will be deeply missed.

It is easy enough to be pleasant,
When life flows by like a song,
But the man worth while is one who will smile,
When everything goes dead wrong.
For the test of the heart is trouble,
And it always comes with the years,
And the smile that is worth the praises of earth
Is the smile that shines through tears.
--Now, Heaven gets to enjoy his enduring smile and hearty laugh while he is greatly missed here on Earth.
