I first met Mandlik Bhai when we moved to Delhi in the year 1974.The Chhaya family were family friends of my husbands family. The impression I got was of a person, very devoted to the family, and extremely fun loving.
As I got to know him better,I realised he was a disciplinarian ,without being obsessed with his position as Principal of BVB.Highly respected, very down to earth, full of innovative ideas,to make life unforgettable for the young minds of students in the school.
He was a wonderful human being, and will be missed by all who came in touch with .
May his soul rest in peace, and the family large circle of friends and admirers, students all be able to gain the strength from what he imparted to each one of us.
Om Shanti.

Matangi Buch published a tribute .

This is a tribute to a father who was so much more to me than a teacher, principal, or an educator. To the man who shaped my perception of the world right from the very start. Surrounded by 5 daughters, his wife, and mother, he was the patriarch and protector of the Chhaya clan! But even in the 1970s and 80s, I remember growing up thinking that it was but natural for men to help with the kid’s chores and that women and men are equal partners in making family decisions. He was a loving husband and dad! Whether it was his love for his dear wife, his five daughters or his extended family, he didn’t hide his emotions or feelings and I loved him for that!! I remember, as a kid, when dad came home, he would let us comb his hair into a dozen ponytails with lots of hair clips. To this day, the best vacations we had were the summer vacations where we would travel by train. It wasn’t the destination, but the travel itself – which he ensured was most comfortable and filled with all the local specialty foods of cities we passed through. He also had a very special bond with mom, their love for each other is eternal and set the bar high for us girls. It was a selfless love that lasted his whole life and beyond…

I so admire papa for his kindness, generosity of spirit, tenacity, and optimism! This is the man who showed us the value of helping others. No matter who it is or what they need, if they need help, you find a way to help them! Selflessly helping others – family, friends, colleagues, and students. Always striving to do what’s right, always speaking up for what he believed in, and never backing off in his fight to do the right thing. He always found a way to solve absolutely any problem, sometimes it didn’t even need to be a problem!! He was a self-made man who lost his dad at 10 of years of age but still figured out a way to support and care for his mom and took responsibility for his two younger sisters. He was a lifelong student who grew quickly in his career but always believed in paying-it-forward. He was proud of “his children”, thousands of them.

With papa gone, it may seem like the end of an era… but for all his daughters, grandkids, and my mom, he will always be with us – a part of who we are! Thank you papa, I love you with all my heart!!

Chhaya Sir, Our Teaching Buddha

Dear friends, 46 years since I stepped into the world from a home @ BVB and have remained like you all a proud Bhavanite for lifetime. I continue to be guided by timeless principles resulting not merely from classroom teaching but nurturing by a school led by a Legend.

Every message posted herein is so beautiful that one needs to say no more. Matangi writing gives rare insights to a person whom each one of us seem to be personally connected to and indebted for life.

After 1975, I had the good fortune to have met him in 2011 and then a few times over last decade. He was the man who was asked by the Prime Minister to strategise and set up of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalas across the country. He ran a tribal school outside of Vadodara till his very end and was asked by the local Vadodara corporation to train teachers in their schools. Overall, the nurturing and teaching agenda carried till his very end.

Amazing that he also shared a part of his life I for one never knew. His Gandhian existence in his small home at Vadodara. Him retiring with a 5000/- Rs salary. Yet he led a life to the fullest, full of joy and adventure, for he was detached from the desires of life today. His Alaska trip enveloped in the warmth of his great family and if I am not mistaken about his African safari which he termed as his honeymoon trip on 50th anniversary.

Must admit I knew the tougher side of him, and little did I realise that he was indeed a Buddha in our midst. Like a post said that such legends are born once in thousands of years. We are all lucky and blessed to have our lives touched by his divinity.

I wonder how we all could keep his light shining on future generations of Bhavanites. Happy to be part of any initiative to institutionalise his memory forever and to bring glory to the school for generations. (Rakesh Jain, 75 batch, contact 8826905492). His simple message of adopting one child for education is perhaps the bare minimum each one of us can take oath to today, to keep his light and dreams ever shining.

At your feet Sir forever, as I owe whatever little I have achieved in life to you and my parents. And Madam Chhaya , you are indeed a beacon for all our families for having been with Chhaya Sir by his side all his life and having nurtured a family of Bhavanites with such deep care , love and affection unseen in the world of today . And our wishes to the five daughters who make this family complete and monumental in every way.

“Couple of announcements, children”. I have heard our dear Princi say this so many times in our morning assembly from my time in BVB from 1970-1980!

I was lucky to be admitted to BVB- I had almost failed the entrance test in 1970 since I was day dreaming through the exam, and Princi agreed to admit me under probation. I am pretty sure he alerted by class teacher, Ms. Veena Sharma, who in turn guided my path by introducing me to the studious good kids in class 1. Princi left an indelible impression on me from then on. He was an inspiring leader, his simplicity was legendary including in his gleaming white school uniform- I still remember the day he cleaned the toilets. He strove for excellence (in class as my Physics teacher, and for the school). He was generous- I've had food in his house at least twice when I missed the school bus and was crying, he took me to his house and he and his wife fed me and then put me on a scooter with the school janitor to go home. He was optimistic about our school, and us, and our country. He remains one of the most shining examples of spirituality-in-action and dharma-fulfillment that I have seen in my life. Princi, our affectionate name for him, was so spot on – he was a shining Prince of karma-yoga

I had the good fortune of reaching out by email to him in 2004 and thanking him and BVB for shaping the good parts of me. I also thanked him for his humanity, and for being such an inspirational leader. In his usual kindness and humility he wrote back “It was your kindness to express your feelings. Whatever you are it is because of your parents' care and bit of our contribution…My wife sends her regards to you and your family”.

Today, I send my regards to respected Mrs, Chhaya, the smiling, kind, supportive partner of our dear Princi, and an equal partner in all of his accomplishments. Loving regards to his dear daughters, who wore so well the responsibility of being so visible in our BVB community.

Remembering Respected Chhaya Sir :
Had it not been for you, I would not have got admission in BVB. In 1983, we shifted from Ahmedabad to Delhi. I used to be topper in my school but the fact that I studied in Gujarat Board, none of the leading schools of Delhi gave me admission in class 8 & wanted me to repeat class 7.
And then we met you, my Guardian Angel- who trusted in me, put his hand on my head and blessed me & said “ You are in…I do not expect you to top as 1st semester is over but do score a distinction”.
And then there was no looking back…
Thank you Sir for moulding me and having faith in me.
You will always be in my thoughts, in crisp white clothes and a radiant smile.
May your soul Rest in Peace Sir

I joined the school in 7th grade after my dad moved me from a convent school due to distance and Dr. Chhaya had joined the school just before me and transformed it! I hated it initially but little did I know it was God who was guiding my steps as soon after, my dad passed away and Dr. Chhaya and the rest of my teachers(Mrs. Emani and Mr. Sharma to name a few) took over as my parents pushing me to do my best and gently disciplined me when I wavered! I remember when I made a telescope he was proudly showing it to my whole class! What I am today(practicing physician in US) is due to educators like him and my teachers! He was an inspiration to all and I hope all educators aspire to be like him and believe me we need a lot like him in these dark times to guide and nurture many of the younger generation growing up now who are not as blessed as we were growing up then! ❤️

Chhaya sir , a man of steel with a heart pure as gold . Me and my siblings were always in awe of him . We were truely blessed to have studied in school headed by sir . I remember when we were in 9th standard everyone was given a duty to help the school heads and I was given a duty outside his office which generally children dreaded . Though not directly but I got praises for this duty through Ms. Geeta Kapur . After 25 years of passing from school got the opportunity to meet him and he was just the same princi as we used to call him. I am truly blessed to have studied under his guidance. To Sir with love- We all who were students while Dr. Chhaya Sir was our Principal, teacher( Physics and Geography) and our wonderful mentor, were so lucky. I was lucky to have studied through out my schooling as Sir being my Principal, our Guru and all our teachers of that time. Heartfelt thank you to Sir and all.
What an exemplary life he has lived. Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan new Delhi achieved great heights and fame because of our Sir. The way he managed and conducted our school and all the activities, it was amazing.
He was the best Principal we could have asked. During his times our school blossomed and every student was given all around development with focus on academics too.
Our school time was greatest thanks to our teachers, our Dr. Chhaya Sir, our Vice principals Mrs. Kaveri and Mr. Katyal. We are able to experience some amazing memories of our days at school because the Bhawan’s culture, philosophies and values were inculcated and instilled in us in the most beautiful manner by all our fantastic teachers and our disciplined and loving Sir.
Our schools motto- अमृतं तु विद्या meaning Knowledge is Nectar. Indeed, it was imparted on us the best way possible by our wonderful teachers and under the guidance of our Principal Dr. Chhaya Sir. And what amazing teachers we had who taught us all the various subjects. Could not have asked for any better teachers then we had.
We had extremely wonderful school life, with right amount of discipline, control, involving all of us in extracurricular activities, in sports, Annual functions, inter house debates, NCC, involving in SUPW, excursions, in our studies with exams taking place periodically and then half yearly and annually basis. it was a fantastic over all development for a child, which we experienced and learned.
Any amount of thank you will not be enough.
Even though many decades and years have passed still the memories of school days is so vivid. Those were the wonder years of my and our lives, every day when I would listen to Sir coming to the stage and say Dear Children and make announcements for the day or for the week. In him I saw a fatherly figure who was just by his discipline, his uncompromising principles of righteousness connected with each and every student in his own way. Sometimes when Physics teacher was not there Dr. Chhaya Sir will himself teach us in 9th and 10th Std. And sometimes he would teach us Geography as well. Such was his range.
Such was the love for the Sir that when he resigned from his post, all teachers and the whole school by way of organising bhajans indicated to the management that we wanted our Sir back. We got him back to be our Principal again. There were efforts from the many parents too. Including my respected father.
Here are some beautiful experiences that I share with you all my Bhavanite family-
When the new school building was to be constructed, I would say Sir encouraged us all to sell the raffle tickets to get the contribution for the new buildings. Because Sir had so much confident on us that we were able to reach out to the world and will be able to make that sale and contribute towards the construction of the new building. This way Sir was the first person who gently showed us the real world outside the school. To go outside the school, to the outside world and try to sell the raffle tickets. The whole idea to me in the beginning which I couldn’t understand. Just thought of selling as much as possible. I would have sold 2 or 3 booklets. But it was a fantastic learning curve to go out and make a sale. I also got my first lesson dealing with disappointments as well when people will not buy. But to keep trying that was the idea. With Sir backing us up it was eventually a great success. I remember many seniors doing their best. And later what a fate we had.
I travel to Europe and bring business to India now. The seed that Sir had sown way back has helped me to make a career out of offering Indian made products to the world. In a way I became the proud Ambassador of Indian culture and ethos to everyone I met. I took my family´s value and Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan’s culture and philosophies with me to every country I went. Indeed Bhawan`s teaching that the world is one as in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam Is real and so true.
Around 2010 when I met Sir and Ba in Vadodara at his place. He told me that they haven’t kept any household help. Every thing they manage themselves. Sir told me he sweeps the floor with a broom and Ba makes the food. He washes the utensils. And that’s the mantra for their fitness he said. Indeed, and I was thinking here is our Sir who could easily afford any help for household chores but he and Ba are doing it themselves. It proves that despite being at such heights in his career Sir never felt any work is small. And like any one from USA or UK he was also a do-it-yourself person. Our Sir lived life like a true Gandhian and lived a simple life.
Way back in in 1991 while at St. Maarten where I was managing a jewellery store, all the American tourists I spoke to they use to compliment to me that my English was good and immediately my mind would go back to those days in school when Sir had implemented a rule that we had to speak only in English otherwise there was a 10 paisa fine if any one speaks in Hindi. I never thought that this little exercise by Sir while I was in 5 or 6th Std would result in a slightly meek person speaking well with the people born with English as their native mother tongue. Again, a small gesture by Sir that helped me immensely. I made hundreds of friends then who while doing their shopping, became friends too.
Remembering our Sir, teacher our school times, give us positivity and power to continue the good work for our family, friends, society, country and to the world. Let me will add some of the beautiful moments and pictures our Sir. Always at the feet of our great Sir and all our wonderful teachers. Prithviraj Singh Amar Singh Sisodia 1985 batch

The impact of Dr, Chhaya’s personality was realised much later in life when I had the faculties of discerning the strength and diversity of his attributes. I look back and admire his strength of character, wisdom, and strong headed purposefulness . I guess all this and much more came from his unrelenting pursuit of knowledge and the ability accept and adapt to emerging opportunities and situations . It was only natural that such an accomplished person had no fear and was naturally humble and compassionate towards the less fortunate or the one’s needing guidance and support . Looking back, I would never be able to diminish the compassion he displayed when I had lost my dad just after school . He not only waived off my younger brother’s school fee, but, also gave both of us emotional support . This was much needed because as children you live under the umbrella of your parents . One feels terribly exposed when the umbrella is taken away . Sir understood what we were going through and engaged with us at a personal level that we had hitherto not known . Dr. Chhaya’s life is a lesson to anyone aspiring for guidance or references in their voyage of life . He may not belong to the current times, but, what he was will be an eternal truth in terms of charting the course of one’s life .

The image of Dr Chhaya in his crisp white shirt and trousers will always remain embedded in my mind and heart. It was a symbol of his personality - a perfectionist, but at the same time simple, kind and loving. Thinking about it now, in my career as a teacher, there is a lot I have learnt from him, just through the ways in which he interacted, and the questions he asked. Most important perhaps was his ability to trust in us as students and and give us responsibilities in the School, not just for social events, but in times of crisis too, such as the Delhi floods in 1978. I remember it vividly, and it inspired me to always think beyond oneself to larger society. He was very large-hearted. The other great quality was humility. He had already contributed so much to education in India, yet he carried it lightly, always wanting to do more. This is a rare quality, which we dont see often nowadays. I was fortunate to meet him in Feb 2020, just before the pandemic, thanks to Jalpa. And it was wonderful to see the same smiling Dr Chhaya, dressed in white, and as curious to learn about what I was doing, even after 40 years. A role model, a teacher par excellence. No words are sufficient to express his impact on my life, values and career. He will always remain in my heart. Salutes to you, Sir.

Nidhi Dhawan Nee Soni published a tribute .

Whether it was the DAILY assembly in which his white clothes stood out as much as his words, or it was the demand for a 100% in everything- annual day, cultural week, Leadership camps, academics and sports- BVB was Dr Chhaya's temple, playground and home. We owe not just who we have become but how we got here to his teachings. In the Farewell function of our batch- when he was handing us the 'parting present' as we began our journey in the world outside he specifically told me "Nidhi, keep the flame burning. To have the belief in your values and be able to stand for them in the face of any resistance is hard- but I am proud that you have that quality!" While the rest of the sentence game me a wonderful, warm sense of pride and confidence... it was the FIRST word that knocked my breath out! He knows me!!! For a principal to KNOW each student, by name and by attribute- he was a human who connected and shaped humans. Gratitude does not even begin to express all the feelings we want to celebrate about Dr Chhaya! Whether it was a geography lesson or Physics, if there was an uncovered class and he got to know- he filled in. Culture course, Swami Chinmayanada's discourses, and the dream to detail the science in Indian Scripture- all show what a great soul has departed. Wherever he is, whatever he is up to- connection, education nd making a difference is what he is doing- even there!

Since the day I first met Chhayaji when I was interviewing to get admission in 4th grade, I was so impressed by his stature, poise and the big smile. He was always a stead-fast symbol of strong character. He carried himself with pride and we could always feel the joy that he shared about with us on being around children, helping us growing up and getting a wholesome education. I remember each and every morning assembly meeting when he would speak, "Children...". He has passed on to us his legacy and we shall each carry on his joy of education and character to our children. I feel truly blessed to have had him as a mentor. Thank you, Mr. Chhaya.

Dr. M.P.Chhaya, a saint in white was the most beloved Principal of Mehta Vidyalaya, a true educationist and a role model. He nurtured everyone with his deep love and care. I’ve no doubt that all students fondly remember him, even those who were reprimanded by him.
A disciplinarian, Dr. Chhaya believed in achieving 100 % participation in school activities especially House functions. With his beliefs and practices he built the Bhavans fraternity into a strong community.
A visionary and a man ahead of his times, he implemented innumerable new practices in Bhavan that were instrumental in its growth. He was a friend, philosopher and a true guide to all of us. He balanced his professional responsibilities with his family duties. On all special occasions of the school he was accompanied by his doting wife, Smt. Shreedevi Chhaya .
My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Sir, your work will continue to inspire millions of people, even after you’re gone. You have left indelible memories etched in my heart.
May your pious soul rest in peace!

ओम् पूर्णमदः पूर्णामिदम् पूर्णात्पूर्णमुदच्यते

To the man who showed us how completeness can be lived.

जिन्की छत्र-छाया तले हम सब बड़े हुए.. जिन्के नाम से डर लगता था तो उनकी एक मुस्कान, एक शाबाशी के लिए हम जुते रहते थे

He was an ideal for us and our parents. The stern but loving Father figure, who established more than 300 schools in India & abroad, training more than 4,000 teachers and 400 principals..

His ability to see the big picture, yet connect with small children, his love for knowledge, his fun-loving nature... Words fall inadequate to express.

Sir, I know you're in a better place, and improving it further with your brilliance, passion and commitment.

Privileged to be taught and mentored by you.

Dr. Chayya was an eminent educationist, a humble person and the friendliest Principal Bhavan ever had. His tenure in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Delhi Kendra was the golden era in the history of Bhavan.
Whatever educational reforms are being introduced in educational field today, Dr. Chayya thought these long back during his time. Hundred percent participation in games and co-curricular activities were his dream projects in which he succeeded. He introduced new student centric methods of teaching, different sports, and extracurricular activities for the holistic development of the children.
He will always be remembered for his exemplary leadership. He was so humble to his students and teachers that no one refused him for any tasks given to them by him. He was encyclopedia of education. Infact he was institution of educational learning.
He created opportunities and developed ways to train teachers to be leaders. He was a mentor for teachers and students and introduced new methodologies of teaching and learning in the field of education.
He was a guide, a friend and philosopher in true sense. His nature of selfless service in helping others was exemplary. He would be remembered for his simplicity, integrity and intellectual wisdom. Such people take birth once in 1000 years.
I sincerely pray to almighty to give place in Baikunth Dham to this pious soul.

There he is! In the centre of the group photo of my batch! Similarly he was the nucleus of our alma mater! Dr M P Chhaya our respected Principal fondly called ’Princie’. He was no less than a prince.. a handsome & good looking man with a persona extraordinaire! I was always in awe of him. The command in his voice, his impeccable speech and the gait so impressive as he walked through the corridors of our school as a father would do to ensure that his family is safe. The other side of him was equally impressive. His little humour, his laughter would make us feel at ease and laugh along. This deadly combination of discipline and humour was what made him the person he was!!!
Although I did not meet him after I passed school, I could not forget him ever! A man who taught us the importance of discipline, hard work and kindness in life lives on in my heart!
Last year I heard his audio msg on our facebook group thanking all of us for wishing him on his birthday! There was a little tremble in that voice, as is with age but clearly the “sound of love” was present. I had tears in my eyes and a smile on my face... Nostalgia gripped me.
Little did I know that I won’t hear this voice again... He is gone for his journey ahead but has left his mark on each one of us in one way or another!
Our dear Princie, Guru, Mentor, Hero, Chhaya Sir! You live on in our hearts! So, I will not mourn but pray that his soul be at peace! I will continue to seek your blessings. I know you are watching us from above and smiling

The Guru, Mentor, Guide and Teacher for life, Shri MP Chhaya made a remarkable mark in every student’s life. He infused freshness and more disciplined life at BVB VR Mehta Public School, our alma-mater. Our Princy who changed the world for better of so many students at Bhavans and everywhere he went.
Many memorable moments from our school life amongst which one remained with me was on ‘Thinking Deeper, Differently and stay curious. It was one of the first classes, May be first one in Physics’ - Everyone eats Rotis but do you know why it fluffs and what is the thickness of the top layer proportion of bottom layer. Amazing he was always.
He was always dressed immaculately in all whites, serene and composed. When he walked through the corridors, no student would ever be found loitering or talking, one would only hear Good Morning sir, just louder than a whisper.
I remember last speaking to him 5 years back while he was living in Baroda and my daughter was choosing to be admitted for post graduation at Irma, I spoke to him but missed meeting Mrs Chhaya & sir, will remain a missed opportunity.
I recollect he was same humble, gentle and ever affable self inquiring about me and my siblings and parents.
To all your students and their families, you have been a Legendary Educationist, Iconic Principal and above all a great human being with love for one and all.
Love and Light with prayers for sadgati for your soul’s journey to divine world.

Naman to the most respected soul. I think what Kabir wrote about bowing to our teacher even before God was true for people like him. Like a true Guru he took complete responsibility of each and everyone of us. A very honest and humble man that he was. My father once took a friend to introduce him. The gentleman had just returned from middle East and wanted his daughter to be admitted to our school. Hence he offered a huge donation for the school building. At that time we were collecting donations for new building. Chayyaji politely kept his hand on his shoulder. I have a responsibility towards your daughter whether she eventually studies here or not. First let her clear the admission test on her own merit and get admission here. Then I will request this new parent of bhawan family to contribute in this fund. And if she does not please tell her that there are better options lined up for now l, if not now then later. This left a huge impact on the kid. She did not get admission in our school but is a very successful doctor in US today. The tinge of honesty that value alert that we get whenever we are about to do something wrong is what Bhawan taught us under chayyaji and our lovely teachers. I pray for him to get moksha and complete peace. We will always miss him.

My first , and thereafter everlasting, memory of Dr. Chhaya is that of his amazing disarming smile that could do a lot more than the words can ever do. I was not a good student and not very keen to join BVB either, but his smile and then a pat on back remains with me as a mark of warmth and care with which I was embraced in the “Bhavan”.

My “Maths” score in 10’th Board was below 40%, and yet I wanted to pursue that as an option in XI’th from the Humanities stream. Mr. Choudhary , our the then Maths teacher had justified objections to having students like me with such low Board scores, but, this was allowed and consequently I not only scoured more than 80% in XII’th Board , but also went on to pursue my Honours in mathematics in College and then a Masters in Operations Research. Such a decision could not have been implemented without the Princi’s approval, that meant so much to a student like me.

I, on behalf of 1980 batch, had made all the arrangements for our 40’th Reunion in school in May 2020, we had the confirmation from school and Dr. & Mrs Chhaya for the same. But, Covid, changed all of that, and, we all regret missing that opportunity forever now.

On a lighter note, Dr. Chhaya’s scare was profound on students like me who used to bunk school to see movies, as we had seen instances of students being caught by Dr. Chhaya from inside the theaters. We had to constantly evolve new protocols like choosing theaters far away from school and destroying tickets before exiting the theater after the movie.

To me, Dr. Chhaya shall always remain an epitome of “ A towering vision, an inspiring persona and an amazing curiosity to learn”. Last year on a zoom call with our batch when he was asked to give a message, his reply was “ ….At the age of 91, I do not have any message , but I want to learn from you people as to what is happening now…” , so, in essence he was what he was, because he remained a student all his life…

Last evening , our 1980 batch held a “Remembrance” meeting for Dr. Chhayya and the tributes from so many of my batchmates were simply overwhelming - he touched every one , in one way or the other, and, in a manner that will stay on with us forever.

With deepest respect for Mrs. Chhaya and all the family members of Dr. Chhaya’s loving family , here is my “Fateha” for our Gurudev - inspired from the original by Nida Fazli.

“Main tumhari kabr par Fateha padne Nahin Aaya….
Main tumhari kabr par Fateha padne Nahin Aaya,
Kyonki Mujhe Maloom hai ke tum mar hi nahin sakte,

Tumhare Maut ki Jisne Sachi Khabar utai thi,
Woh jhoota tha…
Tumhare Maut ki Jisne Sachi Khabar utai thi,
Woh jhoota tha,
Woh tum kab the, who to koi waqt ka sookha lamha tha jo Mausam ke saath badal gaya.

Meri Ankhen aaj bhi tumhare manzar mein school ghoom aaya karti hain…….
Meri soch aaj bhi tumhari vishal shaksiyat ke Akash mein udane bharti hai…
Mera vivek aaj bhi tumhare sanjoye mulyon par mujhe parkhata hai.. ….

Tumhari zindagi sirf lambhi hi nahin , bahut badi bhi thi,
Jisme na jane kitne Jeevan sanwar gaye…

Tumhari Kabr per jisne tumhara naam likha, woh bhi jhoota tha,
Tumhari kabr mein to dafan hoon main , Jo abhi tak tumhare Jeevan se Jeena nahin seekh paya

Aur tum….
tum to zinda ho meri soch main , mere vivek mein, mujh main
tum to zinda ho meri soch main , mere vivek mein, mujh main , aur hamesha rahoge
Kabhi Fursat mile to Fateha Padne Chale Aana…
Kabhi Fursat mile to Fateha Padne Chale Aana…

Sometimes it becomes difficult for a Shishya to write about her guru that also whom she adores. For me Chayaji has been my mentor, guide and above all a father figure. My association with Chayaji is from 1974 till date. I was lucky to learn and grow as a teacher, educator and administrator. His humility, Gandhian philosophy and above all inclusive approach in education was commendable. During his tenure, I as a fresh entrant in the field of Education, learnt so much from him. He was the first principal in Delhi schools to start special education centre, counselling room, CCE pattern among others. My regular interactions with sir came about with him being a part of all the managing committees of the schools I headed.
His blessings and advice have always been with me throughout my career as a Principal of some of the bests schools of Delhi.

My earliest memory of Sir dates back to the year 1972 when I was in KG. Mrs Paladhi was our class teacher and Sir would often walk into our class. His strict demeanor automatically transformed us little boisterous kids into pin drop silence. The teachers would stand up along with us all to a thundering "Good Morning Sir". And he would wish us back in his usual stern voice. When I came to class 9, our science classes got a bit tougher for my "arts" state of mind. So when I received my Chemistry marks of half yearly exams, I resigned to the fact that science was certainly not my cup of tea. But my grand father, who was a post graduate in chemistry, found out a small mistake with the marks allotted. Hence, the next day he went straight to the Princi's office to rectify the "mistake" that perhaps made a huge difference of 3 marks in my overall score. Such was the greatness of Sir that he not only took out his time to understand the reason behind the "mistake" but also wrote a small note on the answer sheet to rectify it immediately. As if this was not all, Sir thanked my grand father for this. And later after my 12th, during the school farewell, as my father thanked Sir for being a role model for both me and my elder brother, he replied that this was the least he could do. I am yet to come across an educationist who, with his devotion and dedication, showed us all the right path to be compassionate human beings before anything else. Sir you are an institution, a Guru who has impacted many generations. I feel truly blessed to be your student today. Much much regards and respects.

My journey at BVB Delhi, was the last 6 yrs of my School life of which the last 5 yrs were under Dr.Chhaya.
Its difficult to say how he has influenced me or left a mark. I feel and believe that a large part of my persona today is a collective creation of Dr.Chhaya and his team of teachers at BVB.
As I meet up with my classmates after 3 decades and more, irrespective how we have fared in our personal lives in this materialistic world, we just bond together like 5 yr olds. I can see the common thread of BVB stringing us together.
This string was woven by Dr.Chhaya, while stringing us together were the ever devoted teachers.
I am not sad at all, in fact I am so so proud to have been his student. My highest respects to the life he has led. He continues to live on in all of us.
Lets all celebrate his life and him as a person.

Very soft spoken yet tough as a principal should be. I will always remember him as someone who was instrumental in my learning.

Chayaji, my school principal by the day and neighbor by the evening. Yes the school was also our home. An ever charismatic, disciplined and loving person perennially adorned in whites. So many vivid memories of him and his family. I will try to recapture some of his non-principal moments. Their house had this huge traditional jhoola where he would sit with bhabhiji (my parents nomenclature that I followed). He introduced me to so many Gujarati snacks and he loved the Idli/dosa and Sambhar my mom (P. Shanker) made. One of his daughters wedding/reception was on the school campus and it was such a lively and colorful event and more importantly there he handed me my first box of foreign chocolates ( India was still in the 5 star era) that I have never forgotten. Also like many of us I used to wonder if he had one set of white outfit or multiple sets a question I dared not to ask. Thanks nowst met him 20 or so years back yet to date I give his legendary examples of disciplining to my kids and wish they had a principal like him. You will forever stay in our memories Sir.

I distinctly remember my first meeting with him when I sought admission in the school in May 1970.
I had gone for a written test and it was in the classroom right next to his room I felt nervous and uncertain and he was very reassuring ..there were a few others too and he kept coming to check on us .At the end of it,he met me and said ^ Dint worry ..if your destiny has brought you here. You will study here " ..and I did and passed out with a good result in 1976 and was awarded Kulapathis gold medal Surprisingly he remembered our first meeting and said .." see I told you ...am happy you came here " ...
I remember him.as a humble ,softspoken yet a no nonsense person and I cherish my days at the school under a noble leadership that has made me the.person I am today.

I still remember my admission interview in May/June of 1977 when I nervously tried to recite a favorite poem of mine...stumbling through the verses on front of a gentle and encouraging Dr. Chhaya. He certainly left an indelible impression on me and my values and shaped the human being that I am today. Salutations and well wishes on his journey!

Dear Sir, you lit a light in my life as a kid and made me into who I am today. Despite attending several educational institutions in my life, you made me literate && educated as well. The values you instilled in our lives are life long and to date I haven't found a GURU as much as what you gave me. The morning prayers, starting the day with "children", the teachings in some classes I was fortunate to attend under your tutelage, and the smile with which you encouraged me and made me into who I am today. Never before and never will someone as esteemed as you be a GURU for me. You were, are and will remain my PARAM GURU sir. May you attain moksha and continue to bless us all from the heavens.
