Claudia Casas was committed to expanding educational and professional development opportunities to students and contributing to the greater good.  Claudia’s welcoming nature, steadfast dedication, determination, and ease with working with people from varied backgrounds was profound.  Quite simply, she brought light into spaces—be it her home, her work, or her community. We extend our deepest condolences to Claudia’s family.  We are blessed to have known such a remarkable colleague, friend, and mentor.

A dedicated computer scientist, educator, and staff member, Claudia Casas served the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and the Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI) for over fifteen years.  Claudia received a BS and MS in Computer Science from UTEP.  As a proud Miner, she helped lead CAHSI at the national level serving first as Program Manager and then Manager for Strategic Initiatives and Operational Planning.  Claudia was closely connected to students, faculty, and staff both with CAHSI and UTEP.  She led CAHSI Student Advocates across the alliance to broaden student participation and increase diversity, and she trained faculty and students on Peer-Led Team Learning.  Claudia was a role model for many, especially Latinas in computing.  As an instructor in the Department of Computer Science at UTEP, she taught such courses as Junior Professional Orientation, Introduction to Computer Science, and Advanced Object-Oriented programming.  She previously owned a technology consulting company where she managed and worked on government and commercial contracts related to customized software and database development.  She also worked as Project Manager for the Digital Media Center supported by the NASA-Network Resources and Training Site at UTEP, where she worked on the management of web-based database projects for the integration of technology in educational research.  Claudia’s positive impact on the many lives she touched will be remembered, along with her contagious enthusiasm, welcoming smile, and boundless support of others, including the students she served.

Descansa en paz, querida Claudia.

Claudia will be truly missed.
I worked with Claudia the past few years as a coordinator with CAHSI and the student advocates she and I dealt with always enjoyed their time with Claudia. Many were very saddened to hear she had passed.
I was not aware Claudia had been ill, and although I knew she was on leave here and there, I had no idea that our last conversation would be our final one. My heart broke in hearing the news of her passing. My sincerest condolences to her entire family. Claudia's gentle and caring soul will be missed beyond words and I hope her family knows how much she added to the lives of those she touched.....we thank you for the gift of sharing Claudia with us.

I met Claudia through my service on the CAHSI Board. She was tireless, efficient, and kind, organizing and scheduling all of the events, coordinating participation, with a bright smile and a warm, engaging attitude. She was thoughtful, empathetic, and caring - we all felt that we were part of her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, and we will hold her memory in our hearts.

I met Claudia in Fall 2016, when I first got an S-STEM grant with UTEP and she part of the administration team. We continued to work together on the grant and so may other projects, up through GMiS this year. From my world in California, Claudia was my go-to person to get things done to help my students. As I grew into CAHSI and CAHSI grew into INCLUDES, Claudia provided me with invaluable support and guidance. I am in awe of how much she could get done and always stay so positive and so dedicated to helping the students. She was an amazing woman and it was a privilege to know her. My deepest sympathy to her family and loved ones.

Claudia was a special and one-of-a-kind person to all of us that had the pleasure of meeting her. I always remember her positive energy in all of our encounters, no matter what troubles she may have been facing. Her commitment and energy were contagious, and made people want to help work towards a brighter and more inclusive future for all of us. I will remember Claudia for all she did helping the disadvantaged find their own place in computing, all while encouraging us to help her in this endeavor. Claudia will be missed by all of us that had the pleasure of meeting her. My heart goes out to her family and loved ones.

Claudia was much more than a mentor to me. During the three years that I worked with her, I learned from her gentle guidance, her positive encouragement at all times, and her support to always see beyond my faults and motivate me to continue learning and growing.
Not only will I miss the beautiful carrying person, but the way she saw each and every one of us. She always saw the best of each person even if we couldn't, her trust helped me to always try to become the person she encouraged me to be.
She will be greatly missed. I am forever grateful and will always have her near my heart.
