Bob Eastwood

1966 - 2022

Biography

Robert (Bob, Beastwood) Kent Eastwood was born October 10, 1966, and grew up in Mountain View, California where he excelled both in academics and athletics, particularly in baseball – from little league, through Babe Ruth and on to high school, before leaving to attend California State University Chico.

In Chico he made many lifelong friends joining Tau Gamma Theta fraternity. In addition to the innumerable great adventures, including his portrayal as Captain Riverman Pierce, helping the fraternity win the championship at Rancho Chico Days, he also furthered his passion for music and became the lead singer for the band Graymail. This led Bob to Santa Barbara where the band released their debut CD and he found a new passion in construction.

Wanting to complete his education, he returned to San Jose State University to start a new chapter earning a degree in public relations and meeting his wife, Nancy. In his new career in hi-tech PR he again made many more lifelong friends, bringing Nancy along for the ride as they hosted elaborate parties and traveled, while continuing to work and use Bob’s construction skills rehabbing houses.

All of this led to his greatest joy – the birth of his son Callahan. Starting with their special morning routines as a baby, teaching him sports as soon as he could hold a ball and then when he was old enough, taking him camping throughout northern California and skiing in Tahoe. However, the absolute best for him was sharing his love of baseball with Cal while coaching Alameda Little League for five seasons. With a positive approach and a desire to improve each child’s skill and love for the game he was able to spend countless hours with Callahan at the field. Along the way, again, making many more friends.

In every phase of Bob’s life dating back to middle school, Bob made friends and kept in touch with them. He treasured their time together and he will live on in their memories.

He is survived by his wife Nancy, son Callahan, brothers Walt and Rich, sister in-law Teresa, brother-in-law Austin, father-in-law David and five nephews – Jackson, Cooper, Jackson, Grayson, and Branson. His parents and brother Jeff have passed. Donation can be made in his honor to Alameda Little League.

There will be a celebration of life on Sunday June 26th from 11am to 3pm. Please see information on the event page and RSVP.

A beautiful celebration of life for Bob last weekend. Here are a few of my favorites of Bob, mostly x-mas holiday video cards from Engage PR. Hopefully, these videos will bring a little happiness during this difficult time.

Bob has been a giant-- figuratively and literally :-) -- in Alameda Little League coaching through our kids' generation. A few of us were lucky enough to coach with him through the years. He always struck me as an "old soul"-- the kind of outwardly gruff but internally loving coach caricature of the mid 1900's-- he could easily have been a character right out of Field of Dreams or a League of Their Own.

Bob loved baseball, and he loved coaching kids. The children he coached brought him joy, and I hope that collectively his memory will carry on as they all one day have children of their own.

Tom Haines and I were lucky enough to be assistant coaches for Bob for several years. In Bob’s last year coaching in 2021, we were joined by Manny. This picture is a frame from the game winning out in our team’s last win together, in the playoffs. With the bases loaded, Manny’s son Aidan made the unassisted put out at third, while my son Sachin is watching from the mound and Tom’s son Sean is already jumping to celebrate behind the plate.

In the actual video, you hear someone in the crowd yell out “Unbelievable!” And seconds later the team is mobbing each other with Coach Bob and Cal in the middle!

The video blurred in the closing frames with Bob— and I think that is just the way he would have wanted it. Bob’s focus was always the children. And somehow, on that magical day, Bob made Tom, Manny, and me kids again, too :-)

Thank you, Coach!

I pledged Tau Gamma Theta fraternity with Bob in 1987 and we very quickly became friends. I've never laughed harder than during times with him. I'll never forget his rendition of "You Are My Sunshine" over the counter to a McDonald's employee, his inspirational full immersion as a river boat captain during Rancho Chico Days, our road trip on a couch in the back of a pick up truck, or the countless hours we spent complimenting each other's mothers.

I had the pleasure of working directly with Bob - he was always a creative, deep thinker and his clients loved him for that. For those of us that worked with him, he would always be ready to debate the merits of a double IPA, share memories of his adventures and home improvement stories. It was clear that Nancy and Cal were the loves of his life. He loved sharing the latest that little Cal (at the time) got up to and he relished being a dad and husband. I'll never forget Bob's signature hat, ready smile and jokes!

Rest in Peace & Power Bob!
I will remember Your fun loving spirit, quick wit,
Love of your family, friends and
Kindness and generosity.towards others!!
A stand up kind of guy!
You were a good neighbor always willing to help out and share your technical and mechanical skills with me except when u .cursed out a broken part in your truck, flat tire...etc, we had a lot of laffs about our car troubles but you figure out each problem every time which was
impressive! You were always up for s party and fun on our block. We laughed a lot!
Another fiond memory: I would always toss the baseballs back to you and Cal as you practiced on your driveway and your baseballs would land across the street on my driveway! Ha Ha!
You were a good Dad
and great coach to Cal and the other kids! It was so obvious that you loved your son,
sports and guided him through his formative years. A big gift!
You will be missed Bob.
My deepest sympathy to your wife Nancy, son Cal and family.

I remember waiting for Bob to come home after my Kindergarten one day. We went into his brothers room and introduces me to Pink Floyd’s Money and Black Sabbath, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. I liked the former, he the later. God bless you and your family Bob!

Bob was my oldest friend dating back to my earliest days on Diablo Ave. The stuff we did as kids and through high school probably wouldn't be believed if I told them. In addition to all that was mentioned, I feel compelled to add that Bob was as good a skateboarder as anyone I'd ever seen. He had a gnarly busted hip that set him back, but until then could (and did) skate with Steve Caballero and Rick Blackhart, the two most legendary skaters from Nor Cal. Bob was fearless, and talented, a good, but sometimes scary combination, especially at 12!
I have a million funny anecdotes that I'd love to share, but I'll leave one that we laughed about as recently as April. Bob had just turned 14 and had a really cute 16 year old girlfriend. He asked me to drive him over to her house so he could say goodnight... at 9:00 pm... He said 'I'll be right back (remember this was LONG before cell phones). I waited in the car til 10:45, cursing the whole time. I went home. Went to bed. Went to sleep. My phone rings at 1:30 in the morning - "dude, where are you?"... We laughed about that for 35 years...
Of course I snuck out to go get him
I love you Bob

I was so sorry to hear of Bob's sudden passing, and I want to express my most sincere sympathies to Nancy, Callahan and his entire family during this difficult time.
I have had the great opportunity of working with Bob on and off for over a decade. Bob was an extremely talented writer, had a unique aptitude for translating technical concepts for employees and the media, had a good sense of humor and was a loyal team member. He thrived when he worked with some more technical telecom clients, helping to tell their stories to analysts and the press.
I have fond memories of Bob during the early days at Engage PR, during company outings and during what seemed like months of planning and production for our annual Engage PR holiday greeting videos. Bob was just one of many contributors to the videos, but his contributions were always memorable. For example, Bob provided great voiceovers for several of the holiday greeting videos and even dressed up as the Grinch. They were all priceless.
While he was not a current member of the Engage PR team, he was highly respected by our team and many of our clients and the press. All will feel the effects of his passing.
Please accept my sincere condolences to you and the family. Bob was a remarkable man. We were humbled by Bob's kindness and compassion for everyone around him.
Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and his family and friends during this difficult time.
With sincere sympathy,
Jeannette Bitz
