We were shocked and saddened when we heard the news of Bill’s passing. He touched so many lives, young and old with his enthusiasm and infectious spirit. He gave his all to his family, Percy Pegler and the town of Okotoks. He will be greatly missed.

I've known Bill since we moved here in '94.
Our boys were in Wolf Cubs together, and we were leaders together. He told the kids a story around the campfire - "La cucaracha" is one I remember. He had a way with kids.
I ran for council (unsuccessfully) in 2010. I watched him campaign for Mayor. We know how his campaign ended! He had a way with adults.
Many of the things he's helped guide Okotoks towards and through have been true innovations. Drake Landing is perhaps the greatest of them.
I was happy when his grandson registered in Cubs, and despite his busy mayoral schedule, helped out occasionally.
To a large percentage of Okotoks' residents, Bill was the face of the Town. As others are saying, he was a great ambassador for Okotoks, as well as a huge advocate for sports.
The gym at PPE is named after him, but for the most part, only those who go there know that. I sincerely hope that he and his legacy are recognized in some even more public way.
Sue and I extend our heartfelt condolences to Elaine and the boys and to their kids.
RIP Mayor Bill -- wherever you are, I hope you have plenty of pins with you.

It is hard to find the words to express the sadness I feel at the loss of Mayor Bill. As a Town staff member who got to work with him on occasion for a number of years, I will really miss the way he treated us with such respect and always stopped to chat or joke with us. As a resident, I admire the Mayor's life-long commitment he had to this community and his dedication to making this a great place to live and work, whether in his role as a teacher, a member of Council or as our Mayor. He was one of the good ones and his presence in this town will be missed immensely. My thoughts go out to his family at this difficult time and I wish them strength and hope the many happy memories they have can bring some comfort.

I am practically a lifelong friend of Elaine and her sister Sue, I am often called The 3rd Sister. I met Bill when he dropped Elaine off for her bridal shower. He walked into that room full of women bigger than life, full of curiosity about every person there. His broad happy smile reached out to each one of us, many of us strangers until that very moment, as if we were long lost family. Bill was always exactly that way to me, and later to my own family. When it was suggested that I send my baby, 16 year old Cody, thousands of miles from our home in England, to work the gate at the Stampede, and stay with his Godparents Sue and Wilber, it would never have happened if it wasn't Bill iI was sending him to on the other end. Bill, who so happily welcomed Cody, and showed him the way.

Elaine, Michael, Jeffery and Bradley, our deepest condolences for your tragic loss. Bill, we will miss you, we already do. REST well. x

One of my fondest memories of Bill was when he and I were coaching 5-6 year old soccer and Jeff and Danika were on the same team. Bill asked all of the players to pick a team name. I think the consensus was to be called the Blue Bombers except I believe it was Codie Bass wanted to be a Shark so Bill named the team the “Blue Bombers and a Shark”. That was Bill… always the diplomat .

I have known Bill as a teacher over the last 8 years at Percy Pegler, his old school he taught at. He was such an amazing ambassador for our town and for students being involved in government. He looked for ways to encourage and actively support student initiatives. He was connected to people and their names mattered to him. As we built the Nature Based Learning program at Percy Pegler he was cheering us on and supporting in various initiatives. I am thankful to have know Bill and proud to have had him as our mayor. He was an amazing example of a man who was passionate about his community and its people.

Bill was one of the first people we met when we first came to Okotoks 21 years ago. He was friendly, welcoming and kind. Our paths crossed frequently through the years with kids in soccer, the flyer force and school together. I had the privilege of substituting in his phys. ed. class several times when I was a new teacher. Something that really resonated with me then and still was his detailed lesson plan and then a note at the bottom that said, 'whatever else happens, make sure you have fun.' When the classes were moving through the gym, not having fun wasn't an option. Bill had clearly established the same structures and expectations for his students. He was clearly someone who set good standards in work and in life, you do your best and you love every minute of it. It was a privilege to know him and to see the impact he had on his students and his community. He was a man who was truly a difference maker.

My first encounter with Bill was in the Foothills local ATA. He was president and ran a great meeting. His knowledge of Robert’s rules of order was impressive and kept discussions productive and focused. My husband Allan played floor hockey in the Percy Pegler gym that Bill organized until the gym there was closed. Our son Tristan had Mr R as his Phys Ed teacher and was in his words, the “best teacher ever”. When Bill was running for mayor we bumped into him outside a pizza restaurant, where he was campaigning. He had recently retired from education and our son said it all made sense to him now. Mr R had retired so he could work at this restaurant. We laughed for quite some time over that. All three of us were impacted by Bill’s presence and the various contributions he made to making life better for everyone. He was a truly remarkable man. We will miss him but we are grateful to have had him in our lives. Our deepest condolences to Elaine, her boys and their families for your loss.

I worked with Bill for 25 years as he was on Council while I was on staff. Mayor Bill was one of a kind with a long list of positive attributes. He was kind, funny, very dedicated to the community, passionate about Okotoks, was diplomatic, respectful of others and their diverse opinions When times were challenging, he had a way of difusing situations and giving people space to think. He also had many accomplishments in his time on Council as he took special interest in the recreation centre expansions, the fieldhouse and champion park to name just a few. Mayor Robertson was more than just a mayor -he was friendly to all in town, approachable and one of the fondest memories we have of him was at an Okotoks Oilers game. My son was about eight years old with a bunch of his hockey friends and when the Okotoks Oilers scored they whipped off their shirts and we’re twirling them around. Mayor Bill said ‘Come on boys !!!I like your community spirit and I’ll buy you ALL a pop!’This was late on a Friday night. The kids were so excited and they got a photo with him and my husband came home to tell me what a great guy he was. We ran into him and his family on Sunday at the ‘Family skate ‘at the Rec centre and I said ‘Hey Bill - did you buy my kid a pop late on a Friday night ??and he said
“ I sure DID!” with the biggest grin on his face

Mayor Bill was an amazing advocate for the Dementia Friendly Communities project in the Town of Okotoks, and a joy to be around on every occasion I had the opportunity. I had the pleasure of working alongside Mayor Bill on this project. One of my memories was being on the radio with him and his ability to recite a poem word for word, in the moment. As a Mayor I believe that he brought many new ideas to Okotoks and contributed to the growth of the community. In my role as the President of The Institute for Public Sector Accountability I found him always approachable. Unlike many other Mayor's in Alberta he was a proponent of open debates in Council. I also knew him as a fellow Pickleball player and we had some very good times playing when he had the time.I thank his administration for the creation of dedicated Pickleball courts at Wilson Park. I was a troubled kid with issues once upon a time, problems with authority, lacking respect and quick to pass the buck, but Mr Robertson was the one person who never gave up on me. He was my gym teacher, he played softball against my stepdad, hell, I'd even run into him at the Stampede every year. Had me thinking, "can I ever get away from this man?" yet the world was sending me a sign, that Mr Robertson and I were meant to have our lives connected, that he was the positive role model I needed in my life to keep me from turning down a dark path. I graduated with Brad, lived across from Jeff and can call Mike a friend. Mr Robertson hand delivered a gift for my daughter when she was born, and called me to make sure I was okay when my father passed. He was more than a teacher, he was more than a friend, he was a father figure and role model and example that there is good in this world, just be the change you want to be. He loved my Macho Man Randy Savage impersonation as much as I love getting into character. Everyone is better off for having known him, and everyone would be better off if they followed his example of being a man's man, an everyman, a man of the people and an ally to the downtrodden and disenfranchised. He was truly too good for this world, and I am a better man for having known him, and truly blessed knowing he cared about my family. I love you Mr Robertson, can't wait for the Spoilers tournament in the sky someday.

My favorite memory of Mayor Bill is when I sent my kiddo into Walmart to by her dad a birthday card, she couldn't of been more then 10. I gave her money and told her to do it herself for Dad. She came back to the car and said that as she was looking at cards a man came up and asked if she needed help...It was Mayor Bill...he looked at her and said "I know your dad! We work together!" And proceeded to help her pick out a card for her dad's birthday. She was so shy at the time and I really hope she remembered to say Thank you. :)
Mayor Bill would always stop to say hi to the kids - it must of taken him forever to get anywhere - LOL!!!
He will be greatly missed in our neighbourhood, and the community in whole. He embodied the Spirit of Okotoks.
My thoughts go out to his lovely wife Elaine, his entire family, the family of staff he leaves behind, and everyone this great man touched over the years. I bet he handed St Peter an Okotoks pin when he reached the pearly gates :)

Mr. Robertson taught me Phsy Ed in Percey Pegler some 25 years ago and was a person that saw potential in me and knew that I would become someone great, early on in my life I had a strong interest in mechanics, and he came up with some mechanic type work I could do on the scooter boards in the gym, wasn't much but I enjoyed it and was grateful Mr. Robertson would do something like that for me. I did reach out to Mr. Robertson a few years ago to say hi and if he remembered me and he did. I did not get a chance to meet up again with him, but I am glad I reached out to say Hi.

“Hello Chris Lakie,
It is good to hear from you. It appears that you are doing well and that you have a great career: “Fleet and Facility Manager”.
Yes, I remember you oiling the scooter board wheels in the equipment room. I really enjoyed my time as the PE teacher at Percy Pegler and I have numerous great memories!
Next time you are in Okotoks give me a call or drop by the Town Office. I must owe you lunch or a beer for oiling all of those wheels!   
Thanks for e-mailing me!

Our sincere condolences to Elaine and family at this very tender time. Our family first met Bill when he taught our kids at Percy Pegler, then as councilor and Mayor. Two of our sons worked for him at the Calgary Stampede Gates. We were always amazed how he could remember so many former students names and showed interest in their lives. He did a wonderful job of all and was a real people person. Bill was a friend to everyone. He loved Okotoks. He will be dearly missed.

My sincere condolences go to the Robertson family All three of my children, Aaron, Alyssa and Trina went through Percy Pegler and they all loved Bill. My son Aaron had him in grade six. He went through a surgery to length his leg during his time in grade six. Bill was gracious enough to let me drop off all three of my children to stay in his classroom until school started as Aaron had a "cage" on his leg so it could heal. They loved going as Bill was always a joker and made my younger kids feel welcome in the classroom. I knew you will miss him dearly. Keep those wonderful memories close to your heart

Patricia Matthews, Former Vice-Chair Calgary Regional Partnership published a tribute .

I worked with Bill for many years as Vice Chair of the CRP, on the Mid-sized Cities Mayor's Caucus and generally in politics. He had an infectious chuckle, a passion for his community, a strong love of his family and a great sense of humour which included torture by poetry! So many times we were treated to teasing with "There's many things to do in Okotoks....". Bill had such a sweet nature. When I joked with him, and other politicians at an event, about my next steps in politics he crafted a note out of some scrap paper and had every sign it (it's attached) and he never let me forget the time I passed him on the highway when his bike ran out of gas without recognizing it was him. He ribbed me about it for years!! I had the pleasure to get to know him and Elaine over the years and admire the strength of their relationship.
Elaine, I can only imagine the loss you and your family are feeling right now. So many of us are grieving with you all, even from afar, for the loss of this good person in our lives. My entire former Councils are among them.
Please know we are thinking of you, your family, your community and all of those who worked with Bill and called him friend.
Big hugs- Patricia 2007-2017 Mayor of Chestermere

Elaine and family, I cannot express how sad I am to hear of Bill's passing. I first met Bill when I worked at the ORC and he would bring the kids in from his class to use the Rec Centre. He was always so kind, and lovely and we shared good ribbings with a fellow co-worker about our Stampeder pride and her Roughrider pride. When my kids were little he was so kind to be their Santa and give them little gifts at our Santa skate. Then when they were old enough he invited them to be elves. Mitch and I always loved running into Bill and Elaine at the Stamps games it felt like an Okotoks homecoming in Calgary. Bill was so special to our family and all of us are heavy hearted today. We wish you all the strength in the world. Please know how much Bill was adored and will be remembered for the great affection he had for Okotoks and impact he had on our community.

Having known him as my gym teacher in first grade, and talking to him as the mayor in passing throughout school and volunteering, I knew him well enough to get to know his kind soul.
He had nicknames for me when I was in his gym class, which were "Brooklyn New York" and "One of a Kind" (Which was what one of my shirts said, that I used to wear all the time) and after not seeing him for years, and reconnecting at a school function, he somehow still remembered me and my nicknames. And every time I saw him after that, he always acknowledged me, remembered who I was, and spoke so kindly so me. It always brightened my day.
He'll be greatly missed by all the lives he touched. He did so many amazing things for this town, and we all are forever indebted. I, myself, am grateful to say I met him, had conversations with him, and was inspired by him.

I am stunned and incredibly saddened to hear this horrific news. It seems like yesterday or at most last week when we exchanged our usual pleasantries at the Stadium. The Dawgs will consider a more appropriate response but I am immediately overwhelmed with sadness at the loss of such a decent and good man. You know baseball is a sport steeped in history and tradition and metaphors involving the game are etched throughout our culture. This morning I’m reminded of the lines in that iconic Paul Simon song, “where have you gone Joe DiMaggio, our nation turns its lonely eyes to you”. I am certain Simon was lamenting the loss of solid, good, dependable men like Bill.

With deepest sympathy to his family, friends and associates.

My most sincere condolences to Bill’s family and friends. I have so many wonderful memories teaching alongside Mr. R. Highlights would be setting up the annual haunted house in the PPE gym, the fire truck hosing the students off on sports day (and the ensuing water fights) and somehow social studies questions that always made their way into Phys Ed class. Bill had an inspiring love for his town, his students and humanity. He was a great support to my family and many others. You will missed. Christine and Darren Killa

With sadness we say goodbye to Bill, recalling all the kind gestures throughout the years that he showed our family. During a mock council meeting for a government lesson, I know my son was in complete awe of the mayor taking a special interest in his role as “mayor for the day,” imparting to him the importance of listening to everybody before making a decision. Bill remembered him thereafter, remarking on his “natural” ability, and my son always beamed with pride. My love goes out to Elaine who guided me over the years at work in how to raise three boys and to the entire Robertson family. Bill’s legacy is written all over this town and on every heart he touched.

Sending our love and condolences,

On behalf of the United Way Okotoks committee, I'd like to send our condolences to Mayor Bill's family, friends, colleagues and those others he touched with his kindness, generosity of spirit and dedication to our community. When he wasn't sleeping/freezing on Sobey's roof in October for Rooftop Rescue or sitting in the Hubtown truck last summer raising funds for his 'release from jail' (the pic), he was out supporting the many organizations that do so much good in Okotoks - all with good humour. He has left a great legacy and we will miss him dearly.

I am very saddened to hear the news on the passing of Mayor Bill Robertson. He was first and foremost an authentic personality and a man filled with immense enthusiasm and charisma. I had the privilege of working with him for 10 years while on staff at the Town of Okotoks. He always took the time to talk to my kids as they were growing up, was humorous and compassionate. He spoke highly of his wife Elaine and his children and grandkids. He had a strong love of Okotoks and was invested in the community for all the right reasons. A true hockey and baseball fan, often to wear a jersey to work, a constant cheerleader and wonderful promoter of Okotoks everywhere he went. He always had his teacher hat on and did a lot of education to youth about Council, toured classes through the Municipal Centre to teach the kids about politics and good governance. Gone far too early but not forgotten! Sincere condolences to his family and to the entire extended Okotoks community including my former colleagues at the Town. Sincerely, Shane, Ana, Tim and Keanna Olson. Pictured above with Bill on the right were some marketing awards of excellence presented to the Town of Okotoks from the Economic Developers Association of Alberta in 2015 at the annual conference.

I am shocked that Bill has left us at such an early age. He was a tireless supporter of Okotoks for many years and I had hoped that he would have had a happy retirement, which he richly deserved. Recently, I sent him a message on his retirement and expected to see him walking through our park one day so that we could have a quick chat, which we sometimes did. I have seen Okotoks grow from a small town in 1981 to what it is today. A great place to live and an even greater place for children. Bill played a big part in this, and it is so sad that his good life was cut short so early.
My sincere condolences to Elaine, Michael, Jeffery and Bradley. Bill will be fondly remembered for his kindness, compassion and support for all of us in Okotoks.

I’m just gutted to hear this. I have tried to figure out what to say here because I fear that whatever I write here won’t live up to Bill.
Bill was a friend. I learned so much from him over 11+ years. I respected him for his kindness, generosity and his deep commitment to his community.
When I look back, I think it was an unexpected friendship. I was a reporter; he was mayor. It’s not usually a relationship where friendship springs from. But, to know Bill was to be his friend. He cared about people and always made them feel welcome. He encouraged people. He built them up.
For several years, Bill and I had a running bet on the Flames/Oilers season series. Bill was a Flames fan and I was an Oilers fan. It was a simple bet. If the Oilers won the season series, Bill would have to chair an Okotoks council meeting wearing an Oilers Jersey. If the Flames won, I had to cover council wearing a Flames jersey. With the exception of one year, Bill always won. Four years running. After winning a few times over, one year Bill said he would wear my Oilers jersey, even though he won the bet and didn’t have to.
That was the kind of man he was: generous, caring and always giving a thought for others.
This is such a huge loss for Okotoks. My thoughts are with Bill’s family.
Rest in peace my friend.

Bill was a great supporter of all things and all folks Okotoks. The efforts to re-establish a Legion here some years ago and the subsequent enhancements sought were fully endorsed by him as the son of a veteran. The re-naming to Veterans' Way, the Memorial Wall, the expansion of the Remembrance Service and the Banner Project all served to promote a view that those who fought and died for our Freedoms, the fredoms he valued so much, should be held in the highest regard. We willl commemorate the latest development at the Field of Honour this Sunday and in so doing we will remember him and his contributions to our town.

I always bugged him that I never voted for him for Mayor, but that was due to the fact we lived in the country just outside of Okotoks and were never eligible to vote for him. We are saddened to hear of Mayor Bill's passing. Mayor Bill is an awesome soul. I first met him at a sustainability event at Calgary City Hall, a mutual passion of ours. He did not know me at all at the time, and yet when I did not have cash to buy a book at the table post event, he paid for me out of the goodness of his heart and perhaps again mutual passion. I ran into Mayor Bill at subsequent sustainability events and introduced myself as a fellow Okotokian with the cash for the book (which was the furthest thing from his mind). Needless to say, his selflessness is what led me to worth more closely with Mayor Bill on the Okotoks Refugee Committee in response to the urgent need to help Syrians displaced by conflict. Mayor Bill's humanity and love for his fellow man and community will sorely be missed. Peace to his family.

During the week I started working at the Town, I was shocked to find the Mayor at my station to welcome me to the team. This would be the first time in my life shaking hands with a person in such an important position. That action humbled me greatly. The more I worked with the Mayor, I realized how much he cared deeply for the Town. He was warm, easy to work with, and passionate about his job. He truly gave his best for Okotoks and was always present whenever he was needed. Mayor Bill Robertson was not just a great leader, but one who through his own actions has influenced many to be better versions of themselves. I'm happy that I got a chance to meet this awesome man

My heartfelt condolences and sympathies to his family and all who knew and loved him. I had the privilege to interview him for a client project in early 2021, and he was personable and kind and generous. So very sad to hear this. It says a lot about a man who was a teacher and then who, when running into students that are now grown adults, was still beloved by them. I am so thankful I had the honour of meeting him.

Once a teacher, always a teacher. I will remember Mayor Robertson's generosity in spending time with our youth. He came into my classroom during two election campaigns to participate in our student vote debates as well as taking many years worth of my students through mock councils. His love for public service and for our community was always on full display. Thank you for your years of service and dedication to Okotoks, Mayor Robertson. You will be missed. My heartfelt condolences and prayers for your family.

Mr. Robertson was the first teacher I had when my family moved to Okotoks when I was in grade 5. He was funny, respected by all and one of top three favourite teachers in Okotoks.

Condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace and may the memories you hold onto of him bring you some comfort in the days, weeks and months to come.

Bill was a great friend to everyone. He was a natural, enthusiastic and genuine encourager, and I was the grateful recipient of his encouragements. In my experience of him, he was genuinely interested in the welfare of others, and the health and prosperity of the people of Okotoks.
Bill is going to be sincerely missed by us all, and the Okotoks Alliance Church family will be praying for the comfort and encouragement of Bill's family and close friends.
Thank you, Bill, for all you have shared with us as a community!
