Bertha(Babs) Struser

Bertha(Babs) Struser

October 19th, 1918 - August 29th, 2009

Biography

Bertha(Babs) was born to loving parents who immigrated from Poland in 1914 to Montreal, Canada. Babs grew up with 4 sisters and 1 brother who all remained close. In 1936, at the age of 18 Babs applied for a job where she met her boss and future husband, Frank. Their eventual union brought forth 3 daughters, Halina, Reesa and Linda, who always felt their parent's love. Babs was an excellent cook, baker and knitter. She was involved in the Eastern Star Org. and in the synagogue. The door to the Struser's home was always open: filled with delicious food smells, friends and family.

Unfortunately Frank developed an early onset chronic illness and the decision was made for Babs and Frank to move to Vancouver to be cared for by one of their daughters. For the first time in her life, Babs was faced with life without her beloved. Being the strong woman that she was, Babs blossomed and discovered parts of herself she had never really known. Crafts and volunteer work helped Babs expand her horizons, a task some may find difficult at an advanced age.

At the ripe age of 91, Babs, surrounded by family, left this world but her loving memory lives on in all those who knew her.

DEAR BOO --Your favourite son-in-law misses you greatly and all the good memories we shared. All those trips downtown together when you told me your family history and the way you looked after Tamara when she was little and the good times with you and my mother Rochelle --so many good memories! With Boo' death, the last of her generation of family was gone. She was born near the end of WWI, lived through the depression WWII and the 50's when women were relegated to the home. She watched her children embrace the 60's with great trepidation but she really showed her grit in the 70's and beyond when our father's illness forced her to become a strong independent woman for the first time.
Her one great regret was that she never learned to play the violin. I make her potato knishes and poppy seed cookies with joy and I miss her daily

I have such vivid memories of Boo coming to visit us in Florida and spending all day in the pool. Grandma Boo was my only living grandparent for a very long time and I miss her dearly. She is always in my thoughts and my heart!
