Biography

This memorial website was created in memory of Anne Foy, our beloved "Aunt Tess". We will remember her forever.

Anne was a kind, fun loving, hard working, and independent woman. She loved meeting people, and truly had a gift for connecting with people.  She is leaving a gigantic hole in our family, not only because she is the last of her generation, but because of the love she gave all of us.  Many of her acquaintences would go out of their way to greet her and express their pleasure at seeing her again.  This happened wherever she went.

Family parties in the 60s and 70s were often hosted by Anne. We all have great memories of the fun we had at family picnics and weddings and times shared with Aunt Tess. She valued family and faith and supported both her mother and her brother Vincent until their deaths.

In her youth her hobbies were travel and horseback riding. In her middle years she took great pleasure in walking through the neighborhoods, reading the paper from cover to cover and visiting with family. Anne was well-informed and had an opinion on most subjects. She was somewhat of a perfectionist and very organized.

A life long Chicagoan, born and raised on the north/northwest side of Chicago. She lived on Fletcher street in a small apartment with her parents Wilbur and Eva Foy, her siblings: Bill, Bud, Gordon, Bob and Ruth. They grew up in the great depression of 1929, where they slept several in one bed or on the floor. Hard times, but the stories she told were of fun family gatherings, music and laughter.

Her dog's name was Rascal and they had several birds while her mother was alive.

Most of Anne's siblings did not finish high school, but Anne graduated from Lakeview High School and became a professional secretary. She worked for many years at Galler Drug Company and from there went on to run the office for Mr. Arnold in Oak Park. She had shorthand and dicta-phone skills. After retiring she helped her brother Bud with his hot-dog stand near Schurz high school and also worked at St. Bartholomew's rectory.

She lived for many years on Armitage in the same building with her brother Bill where she hosted many family celebrations. She cared for her mother there until her death in 1972.

Anne learned to drive late in life. She only had one car, a vintage gigantic yellow car. She loved to visit her brother Bob in Oregon IL. She didn't drive after that car stopped working.

In the mid 70's she purchased a house a couple of blocks from her sister Ruth. She lived there with her brother Bud and cared for him until his death in 2014. She liked to garden and was always battling weeds and trees on her property.

Anne had the ability to make great friends. She is remembered and cherished by friends she made in the neighborhood, at church and local businesses.

Until her stroke in 2013, she had a fabulous memory. She could be counted on for dates, names, addresses and detailed memories of her life and her family. She was a very loving and dedicated sister and aunt.

Family and faith were two important cornerstones in her life. It is impossible to sum up how important she was to all of us in her family. I hope that you can add stories and photos to help us celebrate her life.

Aunt Tess will always hold a special place in my heart. I have so many memories of her when we lived on Armitage. She was definitely one of a kind and was deeply loved by the whole family. I’m sure they are having one big party in heaven.

I will always cherish the years we spent together. I am grateful that she trusted me to be involved in her life and to live with her both in 1998-2001 and in 2020. Who's going to tell me 'how good I am at parking' now? I will miss her calling me 'kid!'

Aunt Tess has been a role model for me since I was very young. My mom always held her up to me as a woman who was smart and independent and worthy of admiration. When I was very young, Aunt Tess was SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED...the family matriarch. Dad loved her, the little brother who credited Tess and Bill for being as much his parents as Grandma and Grandpa. Aunt Tess had everything to do with both Dad and I being avid readers. Her professional success helped me to aspire to college and a teaching career. Her faith, her love of family, even her love of murder mysteries remain in me. There is so much to love her for.
