Anna Campbell

June 12th, 1991 - March 15th, 2018

Biography

Anna was born in London on June 12th 1991, the second of four children to Adrienne (Katy) and Dirk Campbell, an environmental activist and a composer respectively.

Keen to give the children a natural and healthy start to life, Adrienne and Dirk moved to East Sussex in 2001, with Anna and their older daughter Sophia, where they lived in the countryside before moving to the town of Lewes.

Adrienne, who died of breast cancer in 2012, helped set up Lewes New School, a child-centred primary school which promoted artistic self-expression, which Anna attended before going to St Mary’s Hall in Brighton.

Anna started a degree in English and French at Sheffield University but did not complete it, as she felt drawn to politics and wanted to use her many and considerable skills in other ways. She moved to Bristol, studied plumbing and bought her first set of tools.

In the rest of her life, Anna was an activist and a self-described anarchist. She was fearless in her support of the vulnerable and underprivileged. She stood side by side with Travellers threatened with eviction, for example at Dale Farm. Her activism led to engagement with the Calais Jungle, La Zad, anti-weapons industry, Bexhill bypass and so many other causes. And she demonstrated at anti-fascist rallies, where she once suffered a head wound and had to be hospitalised.

Anna was a sensitive soul who loved animals. She felt driven to use her time and efforts whenever possible in their defence. She peacefully sabotaged fox hunts and was vociferous in the campaign to stop the culling of badgers.
Peta, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has added her to its Tree of Life memorial.

It was in May 2017 that Anna decided to travel to Syria. She joined the YPJ, the Kurdish Women’s Protection Units, and, after a month’s training, went to fight against ISIS forces in the northern part of the country.

Anna found here the purpose of her life. She was drawn to the ideals of the Rojava movement, a haven of harmony in a troubled corner of the world, a community which believes in feminism, environmental protection and broad political representation. The Rojava socio-political model is a firmly feminist one, which is all the more startling as a middle Eastern movement.

In January of this year, Turkey launched its bizarrely named ‘Operation Olive Branch’, a major offensive against the northern Syrian Kurdish community, whom Turkey believes to be synonymous with the PKK, the Kurdish resistance movement in Turkey, which it regards as a terrorist organisation. The YPJ is not listed by the US, the UK or the EU as a terrorist organisation.

Anna was killed by a bomb or missile between Shira and Afrin while aiding civilian evacuation out of Afrin. She was the first British woman killed fighting with the Kurdish militia.

She is survived by her father Dirk, brother Adam and sisters Sophia, Rose, Sara, Hester and Rayne.

More than 100 people attended a candlelit vigil for her on Cliffe Bridge in Lewes last week, to pray and sing for her.

Anna (I didn't know her name at the time) used to occaisionally serve me in Cafe Kino in Bristol a couple of years ago. I was always taken by her wonderful sense of humour and fun: there was such a genuine warmth and compassion about her. I was so shocked and saddened to see she had died and am so sorry for the family's unimaginable loss. Anna was a wonderful soul to have met however briefly and I can only aspire to have the courage of convictions that she showed. A special person. Rest in Peace

Sapphira published a tribute .

Even as a child, Anna was extraordinary. Her family and myself thought of her as a faery child, and even wondered if she was a changeling.

I looked after her and her two sisters and brother for a few years when they were young, until they were teenagers. One day a week for a year or so, and then the odd evening and weekend. They are truly an extraordinary family and were very welcoming and kind to me at a difficult time in my life.

Anna was seven when I was first involved with the family. Already she knew who she was and what she wanted. And it wasn't mainstream education! The local school didn't have a lot to offer her because her level of consciousness and awareness was already way more sophisticated than it had to offer.

So for a year she was home educated. That's why I came to help - one day a week - with Anna and her brother Adam who was two at the time. I don't remember her ever doing any formal schoolwork during that year. But she seemed to learn what she needed just by reading and through osmosis from her amazing parents, Dirk and Adrienne. When she went back into school a year later she was apparently ahead of her peers.

Even aged seven, Anna was already a force for good in the world, rescuing birds and fighting against anything she saw as injustice.

Soon after her return to mainstream education, her mother, Adrienne set up Lewes New School, and here Anna thrived, in an environment where children are treated with more respect and care than in mainstream education, and the curriculum includes things like gardening, permaculture and cooking.

As well as loving crafts, gardening and making things in general, Anna was also highly intelligent, and when she went to secondary school she once again found mainstream education lacking. She knew it wasn't right for her, and her parents honoured her perspective and sent her to a private girls school, which seemed to suit her fairly well.

I have many happy memories of the times I spent with Anna and her siblings. They were all extraordinary children, and would joyfully spend whole days down by the river, playing in nature without any toys or screens... I remember them inventing whole worlds with shoeboxes and bits of fabric. And they also loved to perform... I recall quite a long and complex show they put on which they created by themselves.

Each of the Campbell children had different passions and interests. Anna loved nature, climbing trees, reading, making things and generally being creative. And although she was highly sensitive, and probably an introvert, she had no problems getting on with other children. I sometimes took her over to play with another home-educated family where there were three boys, all of whom adored her.

What sticks in my mind though the most with Anna is how much she was already her own person, and always spoke her truth. She did what was expected of her - but instead followed her own inner truth. She had extraordinary integrity, for a person at any age, but it was especially remarkable in someone so young.

It doesn't surprise me at all that she went on to train as a plumber - a down-to earth useful profession - and also that she was involved in so many human rights issues. In many ways she was following in her mother's footsteps: Adrienne was a force for evolution in the world and set up a major personal growth centre in West London and Lewes New School, as well as being a leading light in the Transition Town Lewes project.

When I heard about Anna's death I was absolutely pole-axed. It just seemed unimaginable that someone so young - and with so much light - could could suddenly be stolen from the world.

A part of me is blown away by the fact that she was so passionate about justice and the new revolution of consciousness among women in Syria that she was prepared to risk, and give up, her life for this cause. Another part of me is furious about the injustice of what has happened - angry with the people who were responsible for her death and above all angry with the worldwide political system which perpetuates and encourages war. For a while I even felt angry with Anna herself for sacrificing her life but that soon dissipated, because she was so much her own person and knew her own mind. Now I just feel privileged to have known her.

It is hard to come to terms with her death though. Who knows what she would have gone on to do if she had lived longer than 26. Miracles, no doubt.

And at the same time... who knows what is the bigger picture? Maybe the legacy of her inspiring courage was her destiny in this incarnation. And who knows what incredible actions and events her courage will inspire - actions and events that none of us will never know about... but which nonetheless were put into motion by the seed of her courage and passion.

What I do know is that once Anna made up her mind to do something - even aged seven - nothing and no one could stop her. She had so much passion and conviction, and a profound sense of justice. And this is perhaps what she will be remembered for most: the depth of her commitment to being true to herself.

Rest in peace Anna - you are a shining light to us all.

Jake Recktenwa published a tribute .

Some heroes wear capes, some heroes organize mass movements. Some heroes are just badass British chicks. Anna Campbell is an inspiration to everyone who loves freedom and, when the next great libertarian history is written, Anna will undoubtedly be one of the most striking characters to line its pages. I can't help but recall the words of Howard Zinn from his article "The Heroes Around Us":

"We all know individuals—most of them unsung, unrecognized, who have, often in the most modest ways, spoken out or acted out their belief in a more egalitarian, more just, peace-loving society. To ward off alienation and gloom, it is only necessary to remember the unremembered heroes of the past, and to look around us for the unnoticed heroes of the present."

Yet there was nothing modest or minuscule about what Anna did. She risked her life for a People's Revolution, and gave her life to protect the freedom of every woman, man, and child in Syria. I sit here behind my keyboard, typing this as my hands shake. They shake out of the pure love I have for Anna Campbell and the other freedom fighters in the YPJ and YPG, but also out of anger towards the Turkish government. Because Anna wasn't killed by Isis. She was killed by a Turkish airstrike.

I refuse to let Anna remain an unsung hero. She displayed bravery and a love for humanity that most people couldn't dream of. Such is precisely our problem. If we wish to create a better world, we have to possess Anna's courage and dedication to justice.

I don’t know if Anna’s family will read this, but if they do I have a message for them: Your daughter is my hero. Her bravery inspires me every day, and you should all be proud of her for how she lived. Anna was a remarkable young woman, and, being young myself (20 years old), her example makes me want to better myself so that I can help improve the world around me.

Rest In Power Comrade. “The real damage is done by those millions who want to 'survive.' The honest men who just want to be left in peace. Those who don’t want their little lives disturbed by anything bigger than themselves. Those with no sides and no causes. Those who won’t take measure of their own strength, for fear of antagonizing their own weakness. Those who don’t like to make waves—or enemies. Those for whom freedom, honour, truth, and principles are only literature. Those who live small, mate small, die small. It’s the reductionist approach to life: if you keep it small, you’ll keep it under control. If you don’t make any noise, the bogeyman won’t find you. But it’s all an illusion, because they die too, those people who roll up their spirits into tiny little balls so as to be safe. Safe?! From what? Life is always on the edge of death; narrow streets lead to the same place as wide avenues, and a little candle burns itself out just like a flaming torch does. I choose my own way to burn."

Dear Mr. Campbell, dear family, we do not know each other, but I have also children and cannot even imagine, how I would feel, if one of them died. It would be the severest loss, I can think of and so I send you my condolation and all solidarity. A person, who is very near to me, has been in jail, because s/he is engaged in environment protection. Not to be able to get into contact caused a horrible feeling of isolation and helplessness. How much more the same must you feel?! The biography I read here tells me about about a wonderful, openhearted young woman, who tried to change the world a little bit. This knowledge cannot be deleted. I wish you strength and faith that she is happy and rests in peace.
