I have just learned of Ali's death. I lived with Ali for a brief time during 2015-2016, in Powderhorn Park. Ali was a deep thinker and feeler, I could tell, like me, so had some good and meaningful conversations. Ali was also going through a lot at that time, but one night I was having a lot of abdominal pains and Ali set herself aside and took me to urgent care to get checked out. I remember her as someone curious, that loved to cook (good food!), travel, learn, and care for others. She thought outside the box, and really I am sure will be missed by all that knew her. This news broke my heart today, and I just hope that she is fully living and thriving, and gets to explore and continue to grow!

This photo isn't the best quality but it is one that stands out in my mind of Ali in 2014. We were at a Perkins sitting around listening to Longkee (my then friend, now partner) talk about what it meant to have all these friends come out and spend time with him on his birthday. Ali used to joke with Longkee and I that she was the 'mastermind' behind setting us up as she had invited us over to where she lived at the time about a month after this photo was taken and we hit it off while playing banana-grams. I'll never forget the time that Ali took to get to know people in her life, how much she cared about the things that truly mattered, and how much she made me laugh. I'll be thankful for her friendship, always.

Speaking of Ali wanting to give a TED talk about her journey, here's us at the TEDx Minneapolis conference in 2016. I randomly got the tickets from someone who had plans to do the Ragnar the same weekend. We had a blast.

All of my photos with Ali are goofy, since our friendship was rooted in laughter. Here's one of my favorite more serious shots of her, when she came to visit me in Washington, DC. We're leaning back against the marble benches around the Washington Memorial trying to look alluring and sexy... a pose we could never hold long before bursting into giggles.

Ali, one of my favorite memories is bonding over telenovelas and half-baked ice cream with you in the basement of Scott Hall. I miss your light, your fun, your joy. Dear one, I hope you find peace.

Missing you often sweet Ali girl.

It has been an especially raw experience as the tasks for mourning you start to finalize. So this one is for you sis, using one of our favorite mediums to walk these emotions through:

Grief seeps from the marrow of my bones and oozes out through my pores.

Grief’s emotional journey says “ready or not here I come!”

It comes at you ready to knock you down, so that you’ll sit and exist with it before continuing with your day…

After all grief is not the villain it is the biggest cheerleader, fiercest lover, and gentlest healer I have ever given space to.

It is a journey that moves one out of the shock and hurt of the head’s journey and back into the heart’s.

Grief is a companion to those whose companion has moved beyond their physical realm into the next.

It sits with us, comforts us, and affirms that we are still truly and painfully alive.

Mourning the loss of our beloved. ❤️

Ali and I were goofing around at a playground with Becca. We pretended to fight like little kids in other photos. Here's one of us acting all innocent like we hadn't been up to mischief.

My husband Frank and I have known Kate and Ali all their lives. This photo is one of my favorite of the five kids taken at our house in the late 90s. Our two families spent so much time together that the girls were like cousins to our boys. Ali will be remembered as the life of the party. Always happy and smiling. Sadly, our youngest son passed nearly 2 years ago. It gives me comfort to believe that Pete is together with Ali in the next realm, which I call heaven.

My message to Ali on Wednesday 6/29/2022:

Another dawn has risen and you are still not here,
I cannot speak to you in the same way I did before.

My thoughts are like an unmoored ship tumbling about in my head.
They like I are seeking the harbor that was you, now untethered and alone.
Waves of grief crash over me, no prediction to announce them.

A hand of a close friend, full of empathy and support, reaches out holding me and giving me space to pause my fight to breath but even they cannot return you to me.

You have gone beyond our reach.

Instead I dream and ache over memories of our shared pass, holding close to my heart that you are finally well and at peace.

Ali was an intelligent and critical thinker. She was there to help my friend with transitional housing. Ali was very thoughtful around social issues and ideas and cared about things deeply. May she rest peacefully.

I have no physical photos to share only ones etched in my memory. I have memories taking care of your mother and helping guide you through her transplant and NK process. I have memories working with your mother and the stories she would share with me. I have memories of Ali working as an NST and her reapplying to start work again. I have memories of Ali sharing with me her problems and looking for my advice on who to see or what to do. I am saddened I no longer get to hear her voice and see her continue her journey of life.

I have such great memories with Ali, her sister Kate, her mom Dixie, her grandfather Paul, and all the cousins and aunts and extended family over the summers and family trips to Vermont from when Ali was a toddler to a young adult! I remember feeding the chipmunks (chippies) together by hand waiting painterly as we all sat on the gravel driveway or step, going for walks to pick wildflowers along the road to the farm, visiting the farm animals and cats, floating on the party barge on the (cold!) lake and laughing, stalking bats that had snuck inside our room with Scotty, Devin, and Travis at Stowaway, rocking on the porch, and the list goes on! I also remember having lunch with Ali and her mom, Dixie, when I was in MN for work and smiling, laughing, and talking together there. She had a sweet, genuine smile on her face and was kind and so intelligent. She card for others and was compassionate. She loved her family and looked up to her older sister, Kate. If she had a boy, she told me she would name him Willard. She is missed and loved big. I will always remember these great memories with sweet Ali.
