Alex Trebek - UOttawa Memorial Page

July 22nd, 1940 - November 8th, 2020

Biography

A fixture on evening television for nearly 35 years, most North Americans knew Alex Trebek as host of the popular game show Jeopardy!. To uOttawa, he was a beloved alumnus and one of our community’s most passionate supporters.

Born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, Alex began his studies at uOttawa in 1957. Among other things, he was a member of the Gee-Gees basketball team, playing for the garnet and grey during his senior year. He graduated with a degree in Classical Philosophy, his major chosen, he later explained, because philosophy classes were held in the morning, allowing him to work in the afternoon and evening to earn his tuition.

As the charismatic host of Jeopardy! Alex displayed a generosity of spirit that was reflected in his lifelong relationship with uOttawa, where we knew him as a unique and caring friend who’s philanthropy promoted civic dialogue. His gifts created the Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue, his namesake Innovation and Challenge Fund, as well as his Distinguished Lecture Series and Leadership Award. He was also a significant contributor to the creation of the Alex Trebek Alumni Hall.

Alex spent many years sharing the right questions with the world on Jeopardy!. It is fitting that his gifts will allow future generations of students at uOttawa to continue asking the right questions, and finding important new answers that benefit us all.

As many Uottawa almani and staff know, he founded his own lecture series and I attended one on Climate Change. At the close of the lecture, I stood a few feet away from him and had a chance to meet him. But he was abiding by a rather busy schedule and it prevented me from posing for a photo with him.

In my last year of undergrad (2019-20 school year) he attended the Panda Game and partook in the coin toss. Even though I had a second shot at meeting and taking a picture with him, I completely missed that opportunity.

Every now and then, I reflect on those chances and imagine what those potential meet and greets would have been like. I picture having a long and interesting conversations about our lives and interests. Many of the latter, we shared.

Alex Trebek has been a member of my family and evening since its inception. I grew up with Alex. I even watched it on my phone at dinner in the past year or so. My love of knowledge and trivia can be directly attributed to this show and Alex himself. My dream was to meet him and be on the show myself. I took the online test at least 6 times and it was harder than my Licensure for Mental Health. He was always so polite and gracious. And knowing of his last year, such a brave man and humble. I respected him before, but even more so since learning so much in the past week or so. His family and the world has lost a great man, a legend.

As a longtime fan and avid watcher of "Jeopardy" with the incomparable Alex Trebek as the premier show's host beyond compare- I would like to state unequivocally just how so fortunate we are to call him our own as fellow Université d'Ottawa alumni's and also as Canadians and yes- Global Citizens too. When my son was born on Canada's 125th Birthday and when the Toronto Blue Jays won their first World Series in 1992- I named him Alexandre after Alex Trebek.

My thoughts are with the Trebek family and to Alex; you lived a full and exemplary life! We are so proud!

Our family evenings have centred on Jeopardy for the past 30+ years. My adult children still come over “to watch a little Jep” and now that we record it, there is constant debate about when we can watch, which ones have we missed, etc. Alex you have been a comforting and uniting presence in our lives and we were incredibly saddened by your passing. Your bond to all things Canadian remains a source of pride; your civility and gracious manner, we like to think, had its roots in your Ontario Northland provenance. Canadian through and through, you were intelligent yet humble, funny yet never unkind. We loved you and we will miss you. Sending sincere condolences to your family — may happy memories and heartfelt tributes console them at this difficult time.

I wish to add my sincere condolences to Alex’s wife, Jean & family on the loss of a great husband & father. I read his book, “And the Answer Is”. He was a true friend of knowledge seekers everywhere.
I had the exhilarating experience of being present in the audience several weeks after he announced his diagnosis. He was great! The experience was beyond expectation! I have been a faithful viewer of Jeopardy since childhood. During a break, he chose me to ask a question. He was attentive & gracious. A true class act. It’s true, We do all love you!

Matthew Morgan published a tribute .

On news of Alex's death, morning of my bday, I was utterly heartbroken and unexpectedly wept/mourned for two hours and couldn't explain to my 25 and 17 yr old daughter and son (whom I've only lived with again after 12 years/divorce) and they always made my bday special/love. So I wrote this to them because I couldn't verbalize it. It's 93% what I wrote but have tweaked it slightly.
Alex Trebek was a complete class act. He always humbly stated he's just the host, the Stars of Jeopardy are the players. He shared his positive faith and confidence in our future- his stated favorite tournaments are those of our youth revealing their intelligence featuring college and high school players. He was an inspiration, his encouragement to players, love for knowledge/education, humor and more- was something to look forward to for millions of fans. How he fought his pancreatic cancer battle in last 1-1/2 years with such grace, courage, hope, honesty, positivity and never quit (though hurting behind the scenes!) even against such odds is an example of why so many are huge fans of Alex.

Including an immigrant contest winner from just last Friday's show who emotionally credited Alex Trebek and Jeopardy while watching his show as 10 year old (still learning English) on his grandfathers lap for teaching him "perfect diction". Alex touched people's lives in profound ways.

Including mine. As part of my worst onset mental struggling days I started watching Jeopardy again and for past six years and over time found great catharsis, sometimes the only light in my day in my apartment, 30min/day to help me focus my tangled rebelling brain and couldn't trust anything in the confusion; the rewiring/neuroplasticity of watching/participating over gave me a greater sense of confidence that I had lost, and slowly regained when I could correctly answer- thank God my brain is working! I had so many doubts . I also use Jeopardy as a marker/reminder of my overall health; if I can't come up with answers fast enough that I know I know well, then I better make better effort in sleep, diet etc.

Alex Trebek has been such an inspiration and positive important part of my recent years (also watched him my freshman college year same as when he first hosted in 1984) that I have to write/share this with you now so I can move on for the day!! News was so unexpected. I'm actually very ok that beloved Alex died on my bday because with gratitude I will forever remember that daily 30minute calming reassuring joyous voice, a lifeline, the safe happy harbor and needed "vitamin" boost that he provided , when nothing else was helping, during tough times

As a fellow Canadian, I am so proud of Alex for many reasons. He was a tremendous father and husband. I'm sure that Jean, Matthew and Emily miss him terribly. I know that all of us do too.

I first saw Alex on Reach for the Top. He made the game exciting and supported all the contestants with his enthusiasm and his gentle humour.
It was always fun to watch, just like Jeopardy.

Alex was kind and thoughtful with a dry sense of humour. A true Canadian.

I'm not sure that I can watch Jeopardy without Alex. But if you decide to continue, you'll have to be very careful. Alex was one of a kind and was truly irreplaceable.

After watching Alex on Jeopardy for most of my adult life I was anxious to meet him at last year's Distinguished Lecture Series. Turns out he's a fascinating, generous, and very kind person who tirelessly gave his time to all attending. Having also met his son, Matt, it's heartening to know the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree and Alex leaves behind a charming young man to carry on his legacy.

In the words of R.E.M : See you in heaven, if I make the list...yeah ,yeah ,yeah ,yeah”
Goodbye to Alex Trebek, a good Sudbury boy— who spent 37 years with “Jeopardy!” — and who died today of pancreatic cancer at 80, 10 days after taping his last episode. 10 days. Seen here at the Indian Motorcycle bar on King st. for a Hawaiian Tropic pageant in which both Alex and I were judges - what he couldn’t host? )But you know what, there he’ll
be tomorrow, in front of cameras and the lights, in reruns after what, I’m sure will be a lovely tribute, - after getting fit for hairpieces ,post chemo ,staying strong, having hope and maintaining his public appearances up until the end. Recently,he said, “
I’ve lived a good, full life”, knowing he was nearing the end of it, and was “not afraid of dying."
Sir, you were an inspiration, giving people hope in the face of an otherwise difficult prognosis. Again Thanks . All of your fans and followers will miss you , including this guy .I love this : https://youtu.be/bzmoHmPOQsE BTW,
I watch Jeopardy two or three times a week, and cannot turn the channel until I get a correct answer. Or sweep the category. Sweeping the category is WAY better, btw. Jeez, OCD anyone? And the answer is “ what is a class act ?” The question ? Who was Alex Trebek. Great show. Good run. For a good man.

My son and I spent our mornings together for the first few months after he was born enjoying some tummy time and Jeopardy. Alex Trebek was the only thing that could calm him down sometimes when he was a newborn. Me too, as an adult.

Watching Jeopardy is how I grew up. Each visit to my grandparents house I looked forward to watching it with my Grandpa Jack on the tiniest TV. That love was spread then to a computer game and then a Wii game my sisters and I begged to have. It was then endless amounts of episodes watched with my Mom once Netflix added a few seasons to their library. Who would get the most right answers??? Would would be the hypothetical “winner”.

I spend my nights now, binge-watching through my pvr, episode after episode of Jeopardy. To my partners dismay, it often fills up the memory and takes precedence over Deadliest Catch. That being said, It’s fun watching someone who claims they “don’t like that show” throw answers at the TV until they get one correct. And he never fails to ask me how much I “wagered” in Final Jeopardy when I get the question right. It was absolutely on my bucket list to meet Alex Trebek. Hey, maybe even be on the show! I’m better than you think!

Alex, you were always there. You gave millions of people amazing memories and left behind an impressive legacy as a selfless humanitarian, broadcaster, entertainer and an all around fantastic human. You will be missed.
