I am heartbroken to hear of Alex's passing. While we only met once, he was one of my favorite interviews on my old EcoGrrl blog back in 2013 and I am just learning about this now (I had wanted to interview him again for a follow up to the series).

Here is the interview for family/friends who may not have seen it the first time around:

Miwa, such a great picture. We were so blessed that such beautiful, healthy, original people were able to congregate in one dojo, and Alex sitting next to his teacher.

Since hearing the news from my dad, I haven't been able to get Alex off my mind. Within the Aikido community that I grew up in, there are only a few people I would call "big brother", and Alex was one of them. I spent the better part of my middle and high school days with Alex, who helped me become the man I am today. He was funny, passionate about life and each of his pursuits, and always provided another layer of thought in what were some of the most stimulating conversations a teenage kid could have. He taught me how to throw an axe, light fire (without matches of course), catch fish without fishing rods (really), and the importance of staying committed to something once you start. I will always be grateful of everything that Alex has done for me and my family, and we will miss him dearly.

I am shocked and saddened to learn that Alex has left this earth. I feel so lucky to have known him from those special evenings at Ars Poetica poetry circle, which often included Alex's home baking. He was an incredibly good poet. I have lines of his poetry in my mind from poems that were still in progress. Many of them delved you straight into the beauty of the wilderness, and the small traces and sounds of living things around us. I wish him the very best for his journey ahead into the unknowable wilderness. My sincerest sympathy to his family; here's wishing you the strength to get through this ungraspable loss.

I am deeply saddened to hear this news. I had the pleasure of knowing Alex well as one of his Aikido instructors for more than 10 years. We share time on and off the mat together, and he was like a big brother to my children. His aikido was brilliant. He possessed that sensitivity that eludes most practitioners. My deepest condolences to the family.

I've been Alex's tenant for almost 6 years and was always very appreciative of the very low rent and kind service I received. We had some issues here and there, but Alex always tried his best and had a good heart.
I only recently found out Alex was into martial arts, as am I. It doesn't surprise me, because the physical/brutal nature of the sport, martial arts is something that tends to attract smart, sensitive people.
I hope Alex is up there studying with Bruce Lee and can show me some moves when I arrive.
Thank you for everything, Alex.

I really don't know how any of this is real, but I feel you with me in spirit, so I am going to focus on that and remember the special times we had together.

When we were little, we thought barium was the funniest word we had ever heard and we would say it over and over again and laugh hysterically.

I remember when we took our sleeping bags into our fort during a thunderstorm and how magical it was when the lightning lit up the room. Wonder twin powers forever ❤

There is so much I want to say but I can’t find the words which is quite ironic since I am a talker. Not many can leave me speechless. As a fellow poet I’m happy to know his writing is always in the world. Alex’s critiques on my poems were the ones I cared about the most. Alex helped me get my first publication with one of his critiques. I’ll always hold our friendship in my heart.
