Aisha El-Mekki

April 21st, 1947 - September 21st, 2020

Verily We Belong To ALLAH, And To Him We Do Return (2:156)

Biography

Aisha K EL-Mekki was born and raised in Philadelphia; she received her education in the private, public, and Catholic school systems. She graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education and has continued to serve students in the urban community Philadelphia community for over 30 years.

Aisha’s ardent desire and interest in justice, human rights and equality contributed to her involvement in the Black Panther Party.

As a young adult, Aisha’s thirst for justice was answered when her “Aunt Maryam”, Maryam El-Mekki Abdullah, introduced her to Malcolm X (Al Hajj Malik Al Shabbazz) and subsequently, Islam.

In the early 1980s, Aisha’s further research on Islam led her and her family to travel abroad to Iran seeking an expanded understanding of their faith.

She later became active in the social justice, anti-war, interfaith, and environmental justice movements.

Aisha was employed as a substitute teacher by The School District of Philadelphia until early 2020 when she retired due to health concerns.

Aisha believed in and operated on the premise that Allah, the Most High, has instilled in us an internal sense of justice which is refueled by our daily prayers and connections with Him. This innate sense encourages us to act by standing up for the oppressed and safeguarding this beautiful earth which He has entrusted to our care.

She was the proud and grateful mother of 5 practicing Muslim children.

We went to the Equal Justice Initiative. It was one of the places Mama Aisha has attempted to visit a couple times before. She and Mama Shakurah had planned to go, but it didn’t work out.

When we decided to take a group of youth, we knew we needed Mama Aisha as one of our chaperones. EJI is on Mama Aisha’s list for donations. https://eji.org/

Cecelia published a tribute .

I met Ms.Aisha through her son Sharif. She would drop the girls off to get their hair braided ( and for those that knew the girls know that they had PLENTY of hair) Ms. Asiha would always have to tell Sharif to stop being so cheap. One thing for sure about Ms, Aisha she was about PROPER doing business and did not play. When I learned about her past, I was so amazed that someone of her Character, would have been so humble. Later I realized why Sharif was so intelligent and woke at such a young age. Rest Well Ms. Aisha .

Mama was an activist - particularly around educational & racial justice. She would frequently visit my schools and speak to students, chaperone trips to the library, etc. We would attend ED confs together and she was never hesitant to speak up. As a grad of Temple with an Elementary Ed degree, and experience in homeschooling her own kids and teaching other people’s children, combining it with a liberator’s mindset, she did dope work.

Here’s an article about one of her visits to Shoemaker. https://www.inquirer.com/philly/education/a-lesson-in-black-liberation-for-philly-students-20170530.html?outputType=amp

Mikaeel A Abdu Al-Wadood published a tribute .

I never actually met Sister Aisha, but it was brothers and sisters like her who established Centers and started movements that planted the seeds of Islam for people like myself. Those seeds included the love of Ahlul Bayte(as). I've also been blessed by her life on earth to know her children who continue on that same path she followed and guided them along. May Allah ta 'ala make her grave spacious, forgive and pardon her of any sin and shortcoming, greatly multiply her good intentions and deeds, and grant her a position close to Prophet Muhammad and Ahlul Bayte(salawat).
