Probably like many postgrad students in this faculty, my postgrad student time was marked by the annual ritual of the visit to Adri's office in about February or March - usually because I had somehow messed up my forms and not been successfully registered. Adri would always smile and say she had been waiting for me, and when I finally graduated I remember feeling sad that I would no longer have the excuse to go and sit in the chair opposite her desk and chat to her. On one particular occasion I remember that due to some administrative glitch, my initial PhD registration had not been captured which meant the registration date on my form was wrong and 2 of my PhD papers would appear to have been published before my registration had started and wouldn't be able to be included in the PhD. I was very distressed, but not Adri. With a smile and a twinkle in her eye she reached for her pencil case and said: "It's amazing what tipp-ex can do!" That was Adri - she knew the rules and systems backwards, knew when to enforce them to ensure that programmes could run properly, but also knew how to navigate them so that students were never disadvantaged. She made each one of us feel important, and like we were the only student, but actually she gave the same care and attention to all of us. Thank you Adri.

Adri was unfailingly kind and supportive in every interaction I had with her and has helped us sort many a thorny student administrative issue. She always explained the ins and outs of processes patiently and supported our capacity building initiatives, and also walked with us on a long journey to bring a new postgraduate diploma programme to fruition. Her patience, gentle and kind spirit and her expertise have meant so much to us at the Alan J Flisher Centre for Public Mental Health. Our condolences to all her friends, family and colleagues. Rest in peace, Adri.

Oh, what sad news! My deepest condolences to the family. Adri knew each postgraduate student by name. I vividly remember how she addressed me by my full name in my first week of trying to get registered for my PhD at UCT back in 2008. This was at a time when I had just relocated to Cape Town for my postgraduate studies. That, to me spoke volumes of what a kind, loving and compassion person she was❤️. With Adri, you felt seen. She had such a motherly nature which touched the lives of so many students that she interacted with over the years. I am so blessed to have crossed paths with her. May your precious soul rest easy in the arms of your loving savior

The sad news of Adri’s passing indeed casts a shadow over the place where she worked, but it also makes one recall the profound effect she had on her treasured students, her colleagues and all the friends she had in faculty.

I regard Adri as one of the outstanding administrators in the Faculty of Health Science, simply for the reason that she always went the extra mile while executing her duties and this with a friendly and concerned disposition that was recognise by many that had dealings with Adri concerning their postgrad students.

It was reported to me over the years by a number of postgrad student that dealings with Adri Winckler were likened to that of being “just like a mother” - not in the role of maternal dictatorship and or bossiness , but one of “caring”, as a one would expect of a mother. This characteristic of Adri’s has meant much to the many students with whom she interacted and supported, and ALL only spoke highly of her. It was clear to anyone wanting to take note, that Adri really genuinely cared about people. I often witnessed Adri giving her staff a friendly hug – this was just a natural part of her character and interactions. Upon enquiring once whether the “hugged” office staff member was leaving or going away for an extended period, the response was “No, just saying cheers”! What an unexpected tonic that was .

On a more personal note Adri was always interested in her colleague’s wellbeing and how they were managing in the face of the many challenges at UCT. As sometimes happened when in conversation with Adri ranging from student issues to Pavarotti, one would drift towards more personal situations and discussions around “family situations”. Through this one would be afforded a glimpse of her own family, pictures of whom were proudly displayed in her view, which she adored and especially of her husband Walter. Although never having met Walter it was through Adri that I felt as if I had known him for some time. It always impressed me how she remembered the names of my own grandchildren even after many months of them not being mentioned in conversations. She indeed had a prodigious memory of facts, people and the passing parade.

Always ready for a bit of humour and a laugh, I recall with fondness her impish and self-deprecating sense of humour. Springing to mind was the saga of her missing canine which was displayed in solidarity, by means of a wide deliberate smile, with my own, bewailing both the inequalities of the health care system, the strain on the budget and not to mention the strain of years! Upliftment, generally was the usual feeling when walking out of her office.

Since retiring we kept in touch, albeit infrequently, but as a colleague and friend, I had a deep respect for Adri and shall miss her, my conversations with her and above all, her friendship.

My sincere and heartfelt condolences to Walter, her sister and her family
May you rest in peace Adri.

Since first meeting Adri in February 2017 as a first year MPH student, I have had nothing but absolute admiration and gratitude for her compassion, kindness, nurturing and warmth to me and indeed the postgraduate students community. A reliable listener, self-less problem solver, rare gem and full-time angel; she went out of her way to provide a supportive environment to the postgrad community. Words would not fully describe all that she was and the deep sense of loss that her passing would mean to all who knew her. Rest in Peace, Adri.

THE REAL HEROES OF UNIVERSITIES
by Sharief Hendricks published 16 December 2021

The real heroes (or heroines if you like) of our tertiary institutions are the administrators and support staff. And like true heroes, their superpower often goes unnoticed, unrecognised.

No doubt, a University will not function without the work of the administrative and support staff. Our research, travel, teaching, and every day would not be possible.

The superpower though, is the care, kindness and generosity in their work. Work that is aimed to help us achieve our goals.

This time of the year, as we process postgraduate applications for the upcoming year, I always remember the kindness and generosity of our Faculty’s Postgraduate Office when I was a student applying to the Honours programme (back in 2007). The Postgraduate Office frequently shares this fond memory with me, a memory that serves our current working relationship well.

I always needed help with my student administration, and visited the Postgraduate Office more than usual, which I think provided me with the opportunity to experience their superpower. I can’t help wonder though, in today’s age, where everything is online and most communication takes place via email, are students and staff missing out on similar opportunities?

I have many stories similar to the above, where the care regularly goes beyond the call of duty. A more recent example is my trip to a conference in Monaco. On the Saturday, the last day of the conference, South Africa was issued a travel ban and my flight home got cancelled. True to form, my heroes emerged, and what could have been a complete nightmare without their kind and generous support, finding my way back home turned out to be somewhat of an adventure instead.

Have you experienced the superpower of your administrators and support staff? Please share.

As thanks for their work, I wanted to end off with naming all the administrators and support staff that have used their superpower to help me achieve my goals, like an author list on a paper. I decided against this though, in fear of missing a hero (and there are many heroes to mention). Also, like many of our favourite fictional superheroes in suits, anonymity is not a bad thing. So I’ll simply end with thank you.

I first met Adri when I was a postgraduate student: she was the one with the answers to the questions. As we say goodbye now, I know her as a colleague: caring, hardworking, protective of her team. I recall a Faculty celebration of our graduating PhD students around 10 years ago. Almost every student, when they stood up to receive their congratulations, gave a special thanks to Adri. She made an impact on so many people, and that will carry long into the future. Rest in peace, Adri.

And it was only a few weeks ago when I saw her out of office message and looked forward to her return to campus. I'm so sorry that this did not come to pass, but I am thankful to have crossed paths with this special lady and wish her family and friends strength during this very difficult time. You can shed tears that she is gone
Or you can smile because she has lived

You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
Or you can be full of the love that you shared

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday

You can remember her and only that she is gone
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

I met Adri during my Masters studies at UCT. At the time, I did not have transport to my classes or the finances to pay for my studies. Adri offered me a free lift to and from campus every day as well as a part-time job in the admin office to help pay for my studies.

We became good friends during our daily commute. She introduced me to her love for classical music and we philosophised about life. She offered me her pearls of wisdom when life was tough and encouraged me to continue fighting for my dreams after I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease. Adri also had a great sense of humor and dubbed me "klein handjies" as I was unable to carry more than two apples at a time (a bit of an inside joke - but her colleagues in the admin office will understand).

She adored her husband, Walter and her sister, Sonia. She found joy in her grandchildren and loved sharing photos of them. She took pride in her job and was dedicated to making the lives of the students easier by helping in any way she could.

Adri was one of my biggest supporters and the first to congratulate me on my Masters and PhD degrees. Without her love, kindness and generosity I would not have been where I am today. Adri, you touched so many lives and were so loved! I will forever be grateful to you and miss our chats, your comforting bear hugs and life-advice. I know you never lived your earthly dream to sky-dive but believe you are living out that dream in the heavens by soaring with the angels. May you rest in peace.

My sincerest condolences to Adri's beloved Walter and sister Sonia. I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

With all my love

Who was Adri and what did she mean to us?
Most of the students and staff in the Department of Human Biology knew Adri in her professional capacity: she was the much-loved, all-knowing 'go-to" person that ran the postgraduate administration office in the Faculty of Health Sciences. She was the quintessential professional academic administrator, a university person through and through. She was the solid yet flexible bridge between the university administration, the academic staff and all the postgraduate students, treating all with care, consideration, and kindness.
Adri was a person who enforced the rules and provided guidance but did both with a soft heart. She was giving of her time, even when she truly didn’t have it. To many of us she was the rock we could rely on in times of trouble and difficulty. Whenever we needed to know the correct procedures to follow, for just about anything, related to postgraduate matters, the immediate consensus among staff would be “ask Adri, she will definitely know!”. When you called or emailed Adri and said, “I just need some advice”, she would patiently listen to the situation, and provide the rules then give her experiential advice on a way forward and how to prevent similar situations from arising in the future. She didn’t shy away from saying where we went wrong. Her honesty, experience and support meant that her guidance and advice could be trusted and implemented with little contention. In cases where an issue remained unresolved, she was there supporting us all along the way, walking the tightrope between staff and students, always with the aim of finding solutions. After speaking to Adri about a specific problem, you were always left with the sense of security that everything was going to be okay.
Adri's greatest love was for the postgraduate students, with a heart-felt deep passion to help and assist. Even when all the rules and regulations confounded the situation, Adri seemed to figure it out and find a solution. Adri showed incredible compassion for students that were going through tough times; for example, if a student had to take a leave of absence, she did not just give advice on how to do this step by step, but also showed a genuine interest and care for the student’s situation. Adri often went way beyond the call of duty. She was known to help students earn a few rands finding them office work or by connecting them to potential small job opportunities in the faculty. She loved advising, running informative workshops, and setting up connections between advisors, students and when necessary, counsellors. We feel that she held on to all of us, held us up, and always made time when it was really needed.
Adri was much more than her professional self and some of us had the pleasure of getting to know her personally. She had an abiding interest in the human spirit which revealed itself in a number of ways. She loved telling elaborate stories, often with sharp wit and always seeking to better understand the human condition. She was a lover of literature, and of classical music, especially opera. If you needed to find a famous quote, or the source of the quote, she would seek it out in short time. Spending late afternoons in her office just chatting about life, love and music was always an uplifting experience, and one left her office lighter on one's feet and fresher in the mind.
Adri had a big heart, and her loss will be felt deeply by all of us. Adri was more than her position, she was our confidant, our mentor, and our teacher. Adri, we thank you for your immeasurable support, care, and guidance. We are grateful beyond expression and are profoundly saddened that you are no longer with us.
With lots of love,
HUB staff and students

Adri was a legend in our Faculty, she was warm, compassionate, and seemed to know everything about the thousands of postgrad students she assisted over the years. No matter how busy, she was always available, showed genuine interest in each of us, often getting to know our families as well.

Adri started her career at UCT at the same time I did, and we shared many laughs together - first as one of her students, then as a supervisor, and more recently as an HoD trying to help our postgrad students navigate the complexities of UCT systems. Adri was very good at her job, and cared a great deal about her staff and her students. Nothing showed this better than her initiative at the beginning of 2020 to move the postgrad office onsite to Groote Schuur Hospital for a week to help registrars – with Adri shuttled back and forth at high speed on the GSH golf cart! It’s so sad that the pandemic put an end to this personal contact with students, and massively increased the pressure on the postgrad office.

I loved popping into her office- Adri was always available for a chat, and met every problem with a smile, dry humour and a solution- except on a Monday after her beloved Bulle had lost to the Stormers!

The many photographs in her office were testament to her love for her family and our thoughts are with you at this sad time of loss. On behalf of all the students and staff in the Department of Surgery and the Neuroscience Institute, I wish to convey our condolences to Walter and Adri’s family and friends. We miss you so much Adri, may you rest in peace.

Staffer an invaluable asset to health sciences
26 OCTOBER 2004
https://www.news.uct.ac.za/article/-2004-10-26-staffer-an-invaluable-asset-to-health-sciences

In her softly-spoken and calm manner Adri Winckler explains how she just loves students.

"Young people are so full of potential. Each and every one of them has some good in them. You need to really listen to them and you will get to the core of who and what they are," said Winckler who is in charge of the postgraduate office in the health sciences faculty.

This Five-Star Staffer believes that staff have a responsibility to the many thousands of students who choose to study at UCT.

"Students come to UCT from all over the world and they are alone for most of their stay here. We become their parents and it is our responsibility to look after them. Sometimes we have to reprimand them, but mostly we simply have to encourage and support them."

This attitude has earned Winckler praise from first-year master's student Sebastian Kevaney.

Kevaney, who hails from Ireland, lauded Winckler for being "unfailingly courteous in her responses to my many queries".

He goes on to say that Winckler's knowledge of UCT's academic and administrative systems makes her an invaluable asset to the faculty.

"She is so central to the productivity and smooth running of the office that her absence would be unthinkable. Her efforts have no doubt helped to produce many of South Africa's finest doctors."

And a doctor is what Winckler wanted to be. With a mother who was a radiographer and a father who was a hospital administrator, she says she practically grew up in hospitals and that they have always been close to her heart. Shortly after starting her BSc degree, Winckler was, however, forced to abandon her studies after her father passed away.

"I know the tremendous pressures that young doctors and registrars have to face," she noted.

"Postgraduates are getting younger and younger and there are huge demands placed on them. A lot of them are depressed due to financial and time constraints and this pulls them down. My office is a place where they can come to share their happiness and sadness."

Winckler went on to graduate with a BA in English literature and psychology, which explains her love of reading.

"I'm a read-aholic. I have to read otherwise it feels as if I'm not breathing."

Her other passions, she confesses, are classical music (which she enjoys listening to at home with her husband), watching antique shows and taking pictures with her digital camera. Both landscape and family pics are used to stay in touch and up to date with family members and a fast-growing grandchild who lives in Canada.

Whenever I had a somewhat complex administrative issue with my PG studies, I always appreciated that I would be told to “just wait here for Adri” and she would avail herself even when I didn’t have an appointment. I’ve referred my postgraduate students to her whenever we ran into an administrative issue with a reassurance that they will assistance they need. Thank you for your efficient service with a smile. You will be sorely missed.

Adri welcomed me into the Faculty in 2000 when I was appointed as Transformation Officer. We celebrated life and death together, when my mother died and then her mother passed away. We had our birthdays in the same month and would exchange birthday wishes and sometimes celebrated together. She spent her life caring for others. We discussed how we could help UG students who went hungry. She packed extra lunch to feed these students. From those exchanges the idea of the Students in Distress fund was born. I miss you Adri. Thank you for the many laughs, the times we cried together and the joy you brought to so many. Rest in peace.

I remember having a problem with my registration. I came to your office and you stopped everything you were doing just to listen to my problem. After explaining my problem, you asked me to wait for five minutes and after that my problem was solved. You were the right person for this job and we shall miss you so much. You served the humanity with dignity and decorum. May you rest in peace Adri until we meet again.

I still remember the first time, as a PhD student, I walked into Ari's office. I introduced myself, and she said, with a smile, "Yes, I know who you are". This is what set Adri apart, she knew everyone's name, she knew our challenges and our strengths. As I moved on to supervise my own PhD students, I always knew that I would receive sensible and compassionate advice from Adri. We are so grateful for her kindness and support over the years. She has left her legacy in all of us. I for one will aim to remember her by doing my best to be kind and patient whenever a student comes to me with a problem. Thank you to Adri's family for sharing her with us over these many years.

As someone who did all my postgraduate studies at UCT FHS Adri Winkler was THE PERSON to turn to for any & everything PG! In times of confusion or stress we’d simply email Adri or pop into the PG office & know that she would be able to provide an answer (it honestly felt like there was nothing she didn’t know re: PG studies) - sometimes with that dry humour - yet she never made us feel less than it embarrassed, she was our ally. In times of joy & celebration (submitting that thesis!) you knew it was in secure hands. Adri will be deeply missed - but fondly remembered by thousands of students like me. Our condolences to her family.

Adri was a lovely, sassy office angel. No problem was too big or small and she was a major source of comfort and strength during my 6 years on Med Campus. She was incredibly smart and funny and I have a space in my heart that is just for her. My love and condolences to her family and friends. She has left this world in her physical form, but lives forever in my heart and the path she helped shape during my postgrad journey. To me, she will be alive in my journey. Thank you Adri - the sparkle of light, even in the darkest times.

I had the privilege of working part-time under Adri as my line manager for 6 months. I used to refer Adri as "Adri the great" since the time I was a PhD student. Her pastoral care, kind, friendly and empathic nature is quite remarkable. Her support and guidance towards my evolution from being a student into an academic certainly need to be acknowledged.
My deepest condolences to her family, colleagues and the entire FHS PG community.
RIP Mrs Adri Winckler!

I spent some time in her office, first as a 'naughty' student who was always late with submissions, registration etc, and then later as a supervisor needing advice for my students. I am truly devastated. I will miss her warmth, the chats and her willingness to assist me with anything I needed. You are a rock star, rest in eternal peace Adri.

I'm very sad to hear of Adri's death. She brought all her knowledge and caring to the many challenges of postgrad administration. She was good at solving problems. She could balance the needs of the system with the needs of individual students and supervisors, and I really appreciated that she was willing to find workarounds to get students registered and on their postgrad journey, when the system was a blockage. I am also grateful for her dry wit and humour, which was somehow also always kind. We will miss her.
