Albert T. Chandler

Albert T. Chandler

August 23rd, 1936 - October 25th, 2022

Biography

Albert Tomlinson Chandler was born in Oakland, California to Virginia Elizabeth Tomlinson and Edward “Bud” Grover Chandler. His childhood was spent in the Sierra Nevada mountains camping, horse-riding, rowing, sailing, fly-fishing, wood-splitting, and one season working with the Sierra Club ski patrol. The oldest of three brothers, his natural leadership and sense of adventure was established when, in 1958, he took his brothers backpacking across Europe for 100 days without a plan or destination, spending nights in their VW bug and hostels. By the time of his death at the age of 86, he had traveled to 77 countries and was planning to travel to three more. He also racked up two ascents to Everest Base Camp and two up Kilamanjaro during his lifetime.

While attending UC Berkeley, Albert - or ATC, as he referred to himself in writing - enrolled in the Navy ROTC as a Mining Engineering major. Upon graduation he was “Officer of the Deck” on the USS Loyalty minesweeper, protecting the Western Pacific from 1959-61. Afterwards, he took four months to travel through Central America. He attended Harvard Law School from 1961-64 where, in typical California fashion, he was the lone student in attendance wearing Levi’s jeans. Despite his East Coast degree, ATC’s first love remained the lakes and mountains of Northern California.

ATC had an illustrious legal career, working at the center of some of the biggest energy development projects of his time.

He began international transactional work at Northcutt Ely in Washington, DC, then Athearn, Chandler & Hoffman in San Francisco. In 1966, he and his first wife Nancy moved to Kathmandu, Nepal assigned by Ford Foundation’s Africa-Asia program to the Bureau of Mines with an energy development project that would become a lifetime passion. In 1968, via travels through several African and Asian countries with a baby in a basket, he returned to the USA, but not for long. Asia drew him back a year later after a two-letter negotiation leading to what was supposed to be a two-year contract as a lawyer in Bangkok, Thailand.

His legal legacy was cemented six years later in 1974 when, having made Thailand his home, he co-founded Chandler & Thong-Ek Law Offices (CTLO) in Bangkok.

Over the next four decades, CTLO transformed Southeast Asia’s energy systems through consulting on energy projects and negotiating financing for mining, oil and gas, hydroelectric, and, more recently, wind and solar deals. From Thailand to Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Nepal, and the Philippines, ATC led projects that would work toward Southeast Asian countries gaining energy independence and a place on the global energy production stage. During the US embargo on Vietnam, he was engaged by the UN for a two-week consulting job in Hanoi, earning a formal caution from the US government which he proudly displayed in his office.

In 2009 he joined Chulalongkorn University as a part-time lecturer teaching international contracts drafting and later project financing courses to a generation of Thai lawyers. He authored papers on international best practices and regional energy markets for many international forums.

In 2016, he insisted his law firm promote the fact it had a majority of female partners and associates, as empowering women was something he did in all facets of life (as the father of five daughters should). As many shared later in life, he pushed his associates to take on challenges and encouraged his firm to offer scholarships for continuing education. But, as hard as he worked them, he never hired anyone without hobbies or outside interests mentioned on their CV/resume.

ATC retired from legal practice in 2019, returning to South Lake Tahoe full-time 50 years after his first assignment in Thailand. In retirement, he volunteered his time updating his community bylaws and codes, and strengthening the reach of the South Lake Tahoe Democrat’s Club. Before retirement and after, ATC always found time to walk the dogs, learn new things, and mentor his daughters (and anyone else with passion) through their studies and career ambitions.

Outside of work, ATC was a passionate sailor. He had built a boat as a teen at Fallen Leaf Lake, taught sailing to kids, escorted teams from Thailand to world championships, served in international sailing positions, and was an active supporter of sailors in Thai and international competitions over four decades. He served as an international judge for the sailing competitions in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and Phuket King's Cup Regatta, beginning in 1986. Known for bringing the first Hobie Cat boat to Thailand and promoting the Laser class, he was elected Commodore of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya from 1975-79. It was there he spent many weekends with family and friends over forty years, and met his wife of 34 years, Susan.

One of ATC's crowning achievements was as the loving and supportive father of five women. He raised them to be world travelers, taking them on multi-country treks as young as two months old (Nima) and famously encouraging them to have always visited more countries than they were years old. His daughters could swim before they could walk. They could sail a variety of boats, navigate foriegn public transit maps, and stand up for themselves in a very big world. He encouraged their dreams, no matter what they were, and did what he could to see them happy, healthy, and thriving.

Among ATC’s other interests were the Harvard Club of Thailand and the American Chamber of Thailand’s tax and legislation committee. He was also a lifetime member of the Sierra Club.

ATC was predeceased by his brother, Harry Chandler, and his first wife, Nancy Sands. He leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Susan Kessler Chandler of South Lake Tahoe, CA; brother Steve Chandler; and five daughters and their partners, Nima Chandler of Bangkok, Thailand; Siri Chandler and Craig Gordon, and Kim Chandler of Praknampran, Thailand; Virginia Chandler and Blake Fancher of Reno, NV; and Sierra Chandler and John Yuro of Atlantic Highlands, NJ.

ATC’s legacy is one of great humor, understanding and exploration. He leaves this world better than he found it. May his memory be a blessing.

---

At this time, we are tentatively planning a service in South Lake Tahoe celebrating ATC’s life for the summer of 2023, most likely to be preceded by memorials in Bangkok and at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya, where the Chandler Classic will continue to be sailed every January 1.  In lieu of flowers, please add a story about your interactions with ATC to his memorial page. Thank you.

I am one of Al's cousins. Our mothers were sisters, and we spent much time together as a family at the cabin at Fallen Leaf Lake in the summers. We hiked a lot together, and he was like an older brother.

Between 2004 and 2011, my husband Ed & I went to Thailand many times, and stayed in the guest house of Al & Sue's. They were both wonderful hosts, always so gracious & accommodating!!! One time we were supposed to stop in India, but our connection didn't work out. So Al said, "You have an extra week here in Thailand. If I get you tickets to Myanmar, would you like to visit there?" Of course we said yes. That was our introduction to Myanmar, a country we grew to love. He even set us up with an attorney associate, who took us to dinner and was a great tour guide. He was always looking out for us and trying to make our stay more wonderful - even sending his driver back to the house to get us and take us to our destination!

A funny story about his pre-married life: one time my friend Susanna was with me at Fallen Leaf, and we heard Al was coming with a new girl friend. He told us his plan. He was going to take her sailing in his outrigger, and cause it to tip over! That way, he could see what sort of an out-doors person and how good a sport she was!!! She was pretty but uppity, and we thought she would fail the test. We hid in the bushes, close to the lake and watched. When the outrigger tipped over, she screamed - "Oh, My Hair, My clothes, It's SOOO COLD!!! THIS IS AWFUL!!!" Obviously, she failed the test. My friend and I laughed and laughed. It is very good to see if someone is an out-doors person & she wasn't.

I miss Al very much; he was a precious person to me. I look forward to seeing him in heaven one day!!!

Ian Gray published a tribute .

I never got to know Al as an adult but he was my godfather and fellow Cal Graduate of my father, Donald Gray, who passed a scant month after Al in November 2022. I was googling Al after a conversation with my canadian aunt and uncle, Jane and John Greenhouse, who were visiting recently when I was trying to glean details about his post collegiate days with my father. Uncle John worked with Dad for Chevron and Standard oil before Dad returned to Cal to do his PhD. John married my mum's sister who he met around that time. Al apparently took her out in Laguna Beach while mum and dad were away back in England to get married. My mother, Ann Jeffries, remembers learning to water ski with the Chandler clan at Fallen Leaf Lake shortly after she met my Dad. I also have memories of time spent in Lake Tahoe after accompanying Dad on his summer field research stints to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. I now live in the Seattle area with my wife and work as an urban forester for the city of Renton, WA. Condolences and best wishes to the extended Chandler family.

Caroline (Corky) Dewar Addis published a tribute .

It is hard to believe that Al, who was so full of life, energy and positivity is no longer with us. Like so many others who have shared their memories of him, I owe him a huge debt. In 1985 he took me on as a 25 year-old, newly-qualified English solicitor with no relevant experience. I was not then officially allowed to practise law in Thailand so he arranged a work permit as a mining engineer for me. It was an incredibly exciting time to be working in Thailand with many overseas investors setting up joint ventures in Thailand - Al delegated the job of entertaining visiting CEO’s and General Counsel to me which meant that I quickly learnt my way round Phat Phong, so convenient for our offices on Silom Road! Almost my first job was re-writing the supply and construction contracts for the Petrochemical and Fertiliser Complexes on the Eastern Seaboard. Niwes and I spent months in high level international negotiations while my contemporaries in London were carrying their bosses’ briefcases and doing the photocopying. It was an astonishing professional opportunity with which Al entrusted me. I felt we were really on the cutting edge of legal practice in Thailand - in the days when we could only make direct international calls from his car and otherwise we communicated with the outside world by telex.
He was determined that I should learn to sail one of his beloved Lasers, which I also grew to love. I wish I had a photo of the contraption which he had made in the office so that, dictaphone in hand, he could put his feet under a strap under his desk then lean right back on his seat to the point of over-balancing to strengthen his core for rough water laser sailing - while dictating memos from ATC for Mona to type.
He also let me live in his apartment in River House with its ever-changing view over the rice barges on the Chao Phya river and commute to work via ferry and tuk tuk. Happy days!
He was incredibly kind, patient, generous and inspirational.
I wish I had been able to see him one more time to tell him how much those 2 years in Bangkok with him meant to me. They were an important time for him and Sue too - I remember the early days of their relationship. I hope to see Sue and family in August 2023 when I should be in California so that I can deliver my condolences in person and reminisce about a very special man.

15 November 2022

Our heart felt condolences to the Chandler Family.

Each member of our family has a deep and lasting memory of ATC since 1992. An association with Al was unique. Al was extremely generous and supportive. And with his generosity, he would, in return, offer you a specific tailored individual “challenge”. Each of us experienced Al’s “challenges”, like a call to serve on the RVYC committee, a multi mile hike to the top of Mt Tallac, an early AM Opti sail for doughnuts to the rubber dinghy just off the beach, an invitation to sail in a multi day Laser Worlds regatta, a request to sing a solo at the Chandler Thanksgiving dinner. The list could go on….

One would come to understand that Al wanted you to get outside your comfort zone, try different, demanding tasks, seek adventure. When Al happened by, you paid attention as often something important, timely and specific was shared. Al was a model global citizen, he brought a myriad of perspectives to a conference, a meeting or a conversation. Time with Al was a learning experience, always valued and later reflected upon.

Without Al, and Susan too, we likely would not have come to know the RVYC community, have the use of a well conditioned Hobie 16, gone racing and sailing on the Gulf, experienced a boat ride on Lake Tahoe, sat down to numerous turkey dinners with the Chandlers, circumvent an steep tax on an imported boat, the list could go on…..

Even when Al was deep in work, he would always make the gesture to ask how you were, listen and lend advice, let you know about an opportunity.

What an amazing and special person. Caring, thoughtful and making a difference for so many.

Thanks Al, what a pleasure to know you.

The Rockey Family. Bud, Gaile, Schuylar and Shayne

I will always remember Uncle Al for his love of adventure, sense of humor, and generosity. While we didn't get to spend a lot of time together while I was growing up, I was able to visit Thailand in 2002 or 2003. My oldest brother, Ben, was working for Al and I was able to stay with him in Bangkok. We visited Al and Sue at their home, spent a night or two at the beach with them, and I was able to venture with Sue and a class of 8th Graders up to Chiang Mai as a class chaperone as well. On numerous occasions, my husband and I have ventured down to Tahoe in the summers and have made a point to visit. Al always reminded me most of my father, Harry (his younger brother), who passed away in 2005. His demeanor and laugh were so similar, it almost knocked me over the first time I saw him after my father's passing. I loved hearing Al's stories of his life--how he came to live in Nepal and Thailand (what luck!), as well as the various adventures he had with his family. He loved to ask what hikes we had been on in the Tahoe area---he was scandalized that my dad had only taken us on the same hikes every summer we visited down there--and spent a good amount of time with maps showing us more hikes and describing which ones were best for day hikes or backpacking.
On a recent trip up to Oregon, Al and Sue were able to stop over for a night and spend some time with us. I loved chatting with Al and hearing about what he was up to now the he was back in the US full time. Al's passion for his work and mentorship was absolutely inspiring. Even after retirement, he was so excited to be consulting on various projects and mentoring others. He had such a zest for life, for adventure, and for connecting with others--may we all be so blessed to lead such lives.
To Sue: Thank you for always including us and helping to connect. Having you as family has been such a blessing, and I am looking forward to a good hug when we see you in the summer.
To the girls--Nima, Kim, Siri, Virginia, and Sierra: I can't say it gets easier, but it gets easier to bear. Your father loved you very much, was always so proud of each and every one of you, and will always be with you.
All my love,
Catherine

Such very sad news. For so long I have sought Al's advice and always he has been ready to help. My most recent contact with him was to discuss the question of Abkhazia's participation in Optimist World Championships. As always, his advice stemmed from his conviction of the core values of equity and inclusivity.

My first meeting with Al took place over forty years ago, when he was quietly bringing about the spread of children's sailing in Thailand beyond the traditional yachting community. It was Al who made sure all children, keen to sail but without the means to do so, had the opportunity to learn. Some went on to become members of Thailand's first team to travel to Europe to take part in the World Championships. That was in 1977. Who other than Al would have known that these smartly dressed sailors, members of the Thai national team, were wearing shoes for the first time?

Laura & Roger Everett published a tribute .

We join a long list of people saddened by how much we will miss Al Chandler, but grateful for his enduring influence.

We will always be inspired by his incredible stamina and heart. He could fly in to Bangkok after a full day at his law practice in Yangon, fight through BKK traffic to get home to Nichada, finish up more work in his home office and then emerge with a smile to greet and engage in lengthy conversations with a house full of dinner guests, including some feisty teachers like us. He was always reading and eager to hear what we thought of the latest article in the New York Times or The Economist. He’d engage us in a complex political discussion and then chuckle and leave it at just the right moment. Even as the years added new challenges, he kept on going. It’s incredible that just a couple months ago we all climbed lava rocks and talked about US politics together.

We will also always cherish the adventures we enjoyed together: climbing up crazy steep Phukradeung (and sliding back down in the mud the next day), trekking rugged trails at high elevation in Nepal, sailing to beach camp-outs on Koh Rin, camping around Oregon and braving the streets of Bangkok just to name a few. ‘Everready Al’ often led the way. And if you thought you could relax for a minute because you didn’t see him up ahead, he’d come passing by a moment later. And when he got that mischievous twinkle in his eyes, look out! An ordinary walk might be transformed into a mission in search of the best martini or for the kids to find a way to traverse the grounds of a huge Phuket resort without walking, only swimming.

Thanksgivings, summer camping and many other things will never be quite the same, but we’ll always think of Al, his wonderful inspiration, our precious memories and his wonderful dear family.

Dear Sue and the Chandler Family,
Paiboon and I send our deepest condolences; please be comforted in your time of sorrow by the fact that during Al’s long, productive and adventurous life, he made a positive impact on the lives of many people. Like so many others who worked at his office, I am forever indebted to him for providing an opportunity for me to start my career in Thailand. During the years working with him, he mentored by example, passing on not only technical skills but more fundamentally, the emphasis on ethical professionalism.
It is heartening to learn that Al remained healthy to the end and was able to enjoy the outdoors for as long as possible.
Sue, thank you also for your time at ISB, we have fond memories of you as teacher to Wyn and for organizing the very special Operation Starship trips which were actually our children’s first trips to the US.

So surprised and deeply saddened to hear news of our losing Al. He was one of the principal reasons I joined the Delta Upsilon fraternity upon entering Cal as a junior in 1957, as he was so bright, interesting and engaging, and we immediately became close friends, keeping in close toucn for hears after. Although I saw much less of him when he adopted the Far East as his home, we often found time together on his visits to S F or Tahoe. I kept hearing of his amazing accomplishments in law practice, sailing and his many other contributions to others in so many ways, and none of that news ever surprised me at all. Dear Chandler family,
I was shocked and deeply sad about the news that Al passed away.
But knowing that he went on a camping trip not even 8 weeks before his death makes me feel happy. He was able to enjoy his life until the very end.
Al was an amazing person. Reading his vita is like reading a very good movie script.
When I came to Bangkok in 2004 I just had graduated from high school and I was lovely welcomed by Sue and Al. Thanks to them I could experience many new things.
One situation I remember was in Pattaya. I have never been sailing in the open sea so far and Al gave me a sailing lesson. He explained me what I have to do when the boat capsizes. A minute later Al jumped off the boat and said to me: „Do you remember what to do now?“
Another situation I remember was in Bangkok. For several weeks I drove every morning (at 5-6 am) with Al from Nonthaburi to the city centre. I was often very tired in these early hours but Al was always working already on his papers. I asked him if he wants to do more holidays when getting older. His answer was: „ Everyday is a holiday“ . I learnt a lot from Al but these words impressed me so much that I try to live my life the same way.
I hope you as family are able to stay together over the next weeks – our thoughts are with you.
Love
Marie from Munich

I always called and referred to him as “Al,” starting with our 4 years together in the Delta Upsilon fraternity at Cal. A highlight of my life was getting invited to lunch at the Pied Piper Bar by his great father, “Bud,” with a handful of fraternity brothers practicing law in SF, when “ATC” would make his semi-annual visits to SF. Regret that we moved apart with the years. RIP. Pat Hobin

Through my friendship with Nima I got to know Al and Nancy and later Sue. I was welcomed into the family and have many fond memories over almost 40 years of friendship.

Nima and our group of friends would have the most fantastic weekends in Pattaya sailing during the day and dancing all night. It was he who taught me how to sail. Al was incredibly chill and was mildly amused by our drunken escapades. During the Laser world championships he suggested we miss school to serve on the judging boats - a great life opportunity. Of course we couldn't object and we were delighted not only to help out with the sailing races bur to take the handsome sailors out on the town.

When I went back to Thailand to work after University Al and Sue were very kind to me including me in family celebrations.

Years later my parents moved back to Thailand and lived in the same apartment building as Al and Sue. My Dad and Al were both very involved in the Harvard club and I received regular updates. It was lovely to be able to see them at the pool or the FCCT when I would visit my parents.

My last evening with Al was celebrating Nima's birthday in November 2018 on the rooftop of Central Embassy. It was a very special and fun evening.

Al had a wonderful sense of humour and played such an important role in all of our lives. He is deeply missed. Sending my deepest sympathies and love to Sue, Nima, Siri, Kim, Virginia, Sierra and the rest of your beautiful extended family.

Mr Chandler was a kind and incredibly generous person.

a small anecdote: as a highschooler who was interested pursuing a career in law, I remember asking him if I could do an internship with his firm, and he very kindly offered me the chance even though I was just in high school and really had nothing to show for myself - many years down the line, this would eventually lead to me having a career as a lawyer and I attribute my successes to Mr Chandler's generosity so many years ago. During the internship, even though he was the senior partner, he still made the time to talk to me about his life experiences, the equator principles which he championed, and key lawyering skills and mindset which I still rely on everyday.

I would try to visit Mr. Chandler on my trips back to Bangkok; he was so kind to always make time to catch up - I loved hearing about his travels, his devotion to his family and children, and just his outlook on life. I wish I could have one more conversation with him just to hear about his life which he undoubtedly lived to the fullest.

I can also see from other people who have left a message on this page that he has touched the lives of many in so many positive ways, and that he has been a mentor to so many of us. I feel blessed to have been a part of the group that is fortunate to have crossed paths with Mr Chandler and whose life has changed for the better because of him.

I am very saddened to hear of his passing, and my thoughts and prayers are with the Chandler family who have lost an incredible person. I will miss Mr. Chandler a lot, and I will think of him in the future as he will continue to be someone I look up to and whom I am inspired by.

Thank you, Mr. Chandler, may you rest in peace.

My connection to Al Chandler is through ISB and my friendship with Sue along with children Virginia and Sierra. Our son Mikey was one of 6 teacher families' babies born within a year of each other; so many a birthday party, playtime, and celebration was had at the Chandler household, the Nichida Club and even the Chandler cottage at the yacht club in Pattaya. Sue and Al opened their homes to me, Rob and our children during our tenure at ISB and well beyond that time, when we would return to visit over the years. The Chandlers opened their home not to only a few; but rather, they broke bread with all kinds of visitors, colleagues and friends alike who shared their passion for life, travel, learning, humanity, the natural world and all it's living things. They modelled a deep respect and caring for Thailand, their home, and for the ISB community, whose causes they championed with great commitment. Sue and Al were always ready to lend a helping hand to any friend or colleague from their respective communities who might need support. I have many memories of talking to Sue and Al over dinner or breakfast, enjoying their questions, ideas, hospitality and generousity. But in my mind's eye, the sweetest memories of Al I have exist in Sue's voice that could be heard in the classrooms, hallways or homes of the ISB community. In response to Sue hearing of a friend, colleague, student or parent in trouble or in need of support , Sue would say " Maybe we can do something. Shall I speak to Al about this? He may be able help you." Intrepid and compassionate men and women of power and influence like Al Chandler never really die. Their memory lives on in the lives of the people they have reached out to, touched and helped along in their life journeys. Al Chandler lives on as legend; to his family and the communities that he was actively dedicated to, Al has left a great legacy.

What sad, sad news.

Al has been a great friend for 61 years. In the first class of our first day in law school, the professor suggested forming study groups. We were seated alphabetically. I turned to Chandler on my right and asked, “How about i?” Al nodded, and I then turned to my left and asked the same question to Alex Bernhard. We met once a week in Alex’s apartment because I had three kids at home and Al was in a dorm room. Invaluable, and the foundation for lifetime friendships. All three of us had spent years before law school in the military, so we had a lot in common.

Al and I stayed in close touch over the years. He and Nancy came to see us in Kenya in 1968 on their way home from Nepal, with Nima in a basket. Just a few years ago we visited Susan and Al at their home in. Bangkok, where we enjoyed the best Thai dinner we’ve ever had.

Al was an exceptional man: great father, great lawyer, great friend. We will miss him.

My wife.Bo and I send our love and deepest sympathy to Susan and all Al’s dear family.

Message sent to the Harvard alumni in Thailand...

Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends,

It is with heavy heart that I inform you of our late President and dear friend, Albert T. Chandler's passing.

He, for two terms, served with incredible dedication and commitment as President of the Harvard Club of Thailand. Many alumni who served during his term fondly remember him as a warm and generous leader, who often hosted club meetings in his office, where he constantly sponsored pizzas and drinks.

Al graduated from the Harvard Law School, where he studied from 1961-1964, with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree. He moved to Thailand in 1969 and founded the Chandler & Thong-Ek law firm. Al had made many valuable contributions to Thailand, not least of which he sought to build up talent in the legal profession by teaching at the Faculty of Law at Chulalongkorn University from 2009-2019.

I would like to express my deep and sincere sympathies to his family and thank him for all he has done for our club and country. May our dear friend Al rest in peace.

For those of you who would like to convey your condolences or leave a story or two about Al, please go to: https://www.mykeeper.com/profile/ATC/

We are deeply saddened by the sudden demise of Mr. A. T. Chandler who left this world peacefully on 25 October 2022 at the age of 86 at his home in South Lake Tahoe, California. He was internationally known as an esteemed lawyer with his first degree in Mining Engineering. He operated a well known law office Chandler & Hinthong in Bangkok .
Mr. Chandler served as a consultant for the Petroleum Exploration Promotion Project in Nepal for more than three decades. His valuable contribution in drafting petroleum laws of Nepal has been immensely appreciated. Mr. Chandler always stood in favor of Nepal while negotiating with international oil companies that were engaged in petroleum exploration in Nepal. For many years, he kindly rendered legal advisory service voluntary . He loved Nepal so much that even after retirement continued visiting Nepal whenever he had time for holidays.
Personally he was always calm, quiet, soft spoken , sincere, punctual and exceptionally helpful , a down-to -earth person. We lost a very true friend of Nepal. Will always remember him.
We express our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. May God provide them enough strength to bear this loss. RIP dear Al Chandler.

Al was such an amazing, generous and fun man. There are a few stories to remember, like Al hiking in the mountains of Nepal when unseasonable weather brought snow storms. Above 3500 meters and the sole of Al's shoe fell off. He would take step forward and slip a little back. But never a complaint was heard. He loved being in the outdoors, with friends and family.

Another great memory... landing in Paro International Airport in Bhutan to start a week long adventure...We arrived well before our guide due to changes in our flights. In Bhutan, you are required to have a guide to travel the country, but ours was maybe 90 minutes away in transit. So we went looking for a place to get a coffee or tea as it was relatively early in the morning. The local shop/restaurant for airport employees was just across the street. We enter to find a large cooler with sodas and local beers. Al approached the cooler and noticed the Druk 10000. A local ale which comes in rather large bottles. The foil ribbon around the bottle said, "Very Strong Beer." Al immediately declared we would have a couple of those! And we did. 4 of us drinking very strong beer at maybe 9:30 in the morning to kick off our Bhutan adventure. It was wonderful!

I cherish all of my memories with Al, Sue and their families. May he rest in peace!

Al was an extraordinary man. In life if you are lucky you meet a few people that stand out. Not many but when you do meet someone like that you realise that you have met someone special. Al was that sort of person. I was moved by his positivity and passion and he was one of the most interesting people that I have ever met. We worked in the law together on deals over many years but my memories of him were not about the legal work but the impression he created and his sheer abundance of energy and great humour. My condolences to Al’s family who I never met but heard about a lot, particularly his 5 daughters (Al loved the fact that I had 4 daughters) and his love of horses like my own family, and whilst it must be a hard time now to cope with the incredible feeling of loss you should feel so proud to have been a part of the life of someone who was, as I say, extraordinary and brought so much positivity in to the world.

Al was a mentor for many of us younger alumni who served on his excom during his tenure as President of the Harvard Club of Thailand.

He always hosted us in his office late evenings to discuss activities of the club and was constantly generous in sponsoring pizzas and sodas. During his tenure we achieved many difficult administrative tasks such as bringing the registration and accounting of the club up to date. We had many fun activities including hosting visiting Deans and professors, as well as leading authors. He was always in the pit with us and dedicated alot of time to the club.

We have had less opportunities to talk since he left for the U.S. The alumni here, especially his former excom members, still speak of him and ask about him.

It is thus with heavy heart that I learn of Al's passing. The Harvard Club of Thailand has lost a true gentleman and leader. I will always treasure his kind guidance and mentorship.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family. May our dear Al rest in peace.

There is much that Al has done for which I will always be grateful for.

After university, a little unsure of what I wanted to do, Al gave me my first job convincing me that a career in law was not something necessarily dull and dreary, but that it could be challenging and exciting. It did help that on Al’s instance we would always go trudge through the mud and go see whatever project we were working on rather than just sit behind a desk doing paper work. After a few years of working in Bangkok, Al decided to send me on my next adventure, sending me off to Myanmar to work at a law firm that he was supporting. He assured me that it would be fun, he was right.

Even after moving to Myanmar I saw him about as much as I did in Bangkok, every few weeks he would pop his head through the door at the old Inya Lake Hotel ensuring that everything was in order, but most importantly making sure that every trip ended with afternoon refreshments at the Yangon Sailing Club. It did not matter if we were in the middle of a work meeting or half way across town, a trip to the sailing club was mandatory, which is one of many fond memories I have of his regular visits to Yangon.

Al was always encouraging, supportive and generous, but most of all, kind.

Al was a great man. Professionally he was a paradigm of competence and diligence. Personally he was generous and loving, someone whose family life, and just general intelligence and enthusiasm, made him wonderful to observe and work with.

I was recruited to Chandler & Thong-ek in 1978. How amazed I was when Al’s dad interviewed me in San Francisco and focused a great deal on my sailing credentials. My first contract, 1978-79, demanded that I buy a boat and involve myself in the sailing activities of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club. This was a job? I couldn’t believe my good fortune. Being required to practice law but also expected to dedicate much of my time to sailing. A wonderful combination and balance.

I recall too being inducted into the role of dress-up Santa for the Chandler kids. I even had the pleasure of living next to the Chandler’s in a lovely somewhat dilapidated but characterful house close to the SE Insurance Co. office premises. A beautiful time.

There were the Fireball and Optimist World sailing championships. A great success due to Al, whose personal involvement and unheralded financial support made them possible. I recall sailing Hobie Cats on the Chao Praya River (Bangkok). I remember many dinners together. Being allowed access to the RVYC residence. Visiting the Lake Tahoe home. Even introducing Al to my young daughter just a few months ago.

I can’t mention Al without mentioning his lovely first wife, mapmaker Sue. She, like Al, always made me feel at home and part of a team that was more than just about work.

I have to credit Chandler & Thong-ek for allowing me to work with them for two years, especially when other Bangkok firms were less than welcoming. That led to me more or less falling into a United Nations legal position in Thailand in 1981 and a 28 year UN career. I have to credit Al for believing in me and providing me an amazing steppingstone.

I and many others are better people because of Albert T. Chandler. I am grateful.

Monsiree J published a tribute .

Mr. Chandler was my first mentor. Like many others paying tribute here, he launched my career with his remarkable and characteristic kindness and generosity, by providing me with my first legal work experience, and he continued to provide treasured guidance and references in the many years that followed.

During my first year at university, I emailed Mr. Chandler about a summer internship at his law firm. I explained that I understood it wasn't the norm for internships to be offered to freshmen students but that the experience would prove invaluable to me as I planned to apply for a joint-degree program with Columbia Law School, and I had to try my best to show the admissions tutor that I had the desired ability and experience. I was 18 years old with no prior legal work experience, and my CV was essentially a list of sports, extracurricular activities, and high school grades. Ten minutes after I hit 'sent', I received a reply: "We agree in principle to your working at C&T as a 2005 summer intern. We assume you have seen our website. We pay a modest per diem to summer interns. Do you have arrangements for accommodations in Bangkok?"

That summer, I was warmly welcomed into a unique and to-this-day-unmatched 'family' firm environment, where Mr. Chandler (who the team covertly but appropriately called "Pa") personally guided our patchwork group of summer interns through the 101s of legal practice, brought us into commercial negotiations and ministerial consultations, taught us about the importance of evolving legislation and industry publications, led us on site visits in coastal areas so we could see the concrete impact of the work that was being done, and involved us in his evening lectures at Chulalongkorn University -- while at the same time ensuring, through his equally kind team, that we were being well-fed and well-cared for daily. During the long car rides through Bangkok's traffic to and from meetings, and on afternoon trips to the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, he shared stories of developing Nepalese energy legislature in the pioneering days, his treks and adventures through the US, Europe and the Himalayas, his sailing competitions with a range of sailors from village fishermen to kings and Olympians, his interactions with various governmental bodies and how to adeptly (and many times, humorously) handle political and power dynamics, and his advice that careers didn't - and perhaps, shouldn't - be linear, and his belief that the most important asset of a legal education and career were not the pedigree or even technical expertise gained, but the genuine friendships and relationships developed through the years.

We kept in touch in the years that followed, and before I graduated from law school, he provided me with the following advice:
- Take a perspective-widening year before full-time work...but if not, then commit to the first job for two years to learn the ins-and-outs of practicing law, gain confidence in yourself, and build relationships with your peers and other associates;
- Gain as much practical experience as possible, so you will have the confidence when advising clients in later years; and
- Having a succession of good mentors helps;
...with a strong caveat that "All the above is subject to you giving top importance to developing and maintaining interests outside the practice of law, and not letting the grind take 100% of your time".

Mr. Chandler showed us by example that the practice of law was not desk-bound and could take you from the top of the mountain to the edge of the sea, that you could build in time for friends, family and adventures (sailing, horseback riding, trekking, skiing!) in your day-to-day, that there was positive impact to be made (and that we could tangibly make through work), and that you could flourish in the highest levels of business while being deeply, deeply generous, unfailingly fair, and genuinely kind. Through his welcome from day one and his steadfast guidance over the years, he also instilled in me a belief that in legal practice as in life, we should aspire to be enabling mentors rather than gatekeepers, and that we should do what we can to equip and encourage those who are starting out or entering the next stages of their careers.

It was a true privilege to have learned from someone who was the embodiment of an incredible life lived to the fullest, in every arena. I will always be profoundly grateful to him and his family (both the Chandler family and the C&T firm family) for opening the doors to a career and life that has crossed the globe and which continues to lead to many adventures inside and (as he would emphasize, most importantly!) outside the practice of law.

Al gave me an opportunity to do a great many things when I needed it the most. His act of concern, kindness and compassion helped me and my family in ways that words can never express. I know that I am not the only one.

The world is a better place because ATC, Mr. Chandler, Al, was here; and his legacy can be carried forward by the many that have been privileged to be impacted by him.

My thoughts and love to Al and his family.

Mr. Chandler was a remarkable person who touched many people's lives and careers. He was inspiring, fun, energetic and enthusiastic in everything he did.

To this day, I still recall that during my job interview with him in 2011, he had one important question for me. He asked: "how many countries have you visited?" I don't remember my response but I will always remember his advice: to visit as many countries as my age and at least 1 new country a year (an advice I still follow to this day).

He understood that there was more to life than sitting behind a desk or going through paperwork. You have to get out and explore the world and enjoy all the experiences life has to offer. He encouraged us to visit project sites instead of just reading about it and drawing up contracts. He was the kind of boss who was happy we went on vacation and traveled the world. Smiling, he would always ask where I went and what I did.

Thank you for always being generous, kind and supportive. You will be deeply missed.

I first met Al in 1980 at the Optimist World Championships in Howth, Dublin, one of the first events required to have an ‘international jury’. At that time, I was setting up the ISAF Judges’ scheme and immediately recognised that here was exactly who we were looking for. I put a form in front of him and said, ‘sign here’. Thus, Al became one of the first International Judges. At that early stage, there was no exam; it was just a case of finding the right people. He became a highly respected IJ, just as he was highly respected in many other areas of the sport, and life generally. More importantly for me, he became a lifetime friend. As a judge on my juries, I learnt much from him; especially about being empathetic towards sailors who were in trouble.
It was because of him, I became a ‘no free will’ advocate; people are what they are because of their genes and their experiences, neither of which they can control.
He was one of the most generous people I have known, both in time and money, always keen to help others, especially the less fortunate.
He made the world a better place, and the people in it more understanding of each other.
A life well lived.

Al was my mentor, partner and friend and changed the path of my career when he welcomed me into his firm, and family, in 1992, en route to Vietnam where he had the vision to go before anyone else, making me the first foreign lawyer in Vietnam. We then moved into Myanmar together in 1995 and became the first foreign lawyers there too. Words can not describe what Al taught me but patience, practicality and perseverance come to mind. My career would not be what it is today without Al and he will be greatly missed. I wish Sue, Nima, Siri, Kim, Virginia and Sierra long life.

Helen Mary Wilkes published a tribute .

As well as being at a personal level a great friend and a great mentor, the importance of Al to the international Optimist Class and movement cannot be over-estimated.

In his over-riding sense of justice and fair-play, it was he who identified and wrote:
“The Optimist is not at present a strict one design class. Rich national associations can afford both to purchase top-quality boats and to transport them anywhere in the world. Skippers from poorer class associations and distant class associations are discriminated against.”
This was the vision which led ultimately to the Optimist as being the strictest one-design built on four continents.

By the time he retired as president in 1989 it is recorded that he had: “achieved a radical modernisation of the class. IODA was now firmly established in Asia (Japan was the venue for the 1989 Worlds) and had a prestigious Yearbook, a proper Constitution and a set of Conditions for the World Sailing Championship. With around 60 member countries on all six continents, more than half of them attending the Worlds and three growing Continental Championships IODA had truly progressed.”

ATC was a good friend of my Dad’s through sailing but when, after volunteering at the SEA Games in Myanmar in 2013, I decided Yangon seemed like an exciting place to live, ATC offered me a job as Office Manager at Myanmar Legal Services. I had no degree, let alone law degree, but I had run my own business for the previous 11 years and that seemed enough for him. His faith in me was very touching and meant a lot. Even after leaving the firm we stayed in touch and he was always interested in what I was doing, even making trips to visit my subsequent businesses in Yangon and Bangkok, which I thought was remarkable and made me feel very supported. He was behind many of my most memorable times in Myanmar and Thailand in those first few years, and I always felt a huge amount of love and gratitude towards him. The number of people he will have positively affected in his long life must be vast and what better way to live a life, than with kindness and generosity towards others and a life so full of adventure and achievement that your legacy lives on forever! ATC was a truly inspiring man and while I’m sad he’s no longer here, I’m happy he was able to end his journey in his most beloved part of the world. We had huge Ansel Adams prints of the Sierra Nevada landscape on the walls of the offices at Myanmar Legal Services, which ATC loved and often led to talking about his home in Lane Tahoe, always with such affection. Much love to the wonderful family he leaves behind, my thoughts are with you xx

David Lyman published a tribute .

All,

I am deeply and profoundly saddened after learning that an old Nany and lawyer colleague, Albert Chandler, has just passed away. While Al and I were in the US Navy on Minesweepers, at the same time in 1958 -1960 in the same 4 ship Division in Long Beach, California, we did not know one another then. He stayed in Minesweepers for a while but I went on to Submarine School. We both were from San Francisco, but we did not make contact until he arrived in Bangkok in the late 1960s when he soon thereafter established Chandler and Thong-ek which has evolved to new owners today . Legal colleagues and friends, though not very close but always respectful of and with one another. For a while he also lived in Nichada Park, where I have lived since the early 1990s. He was an avid sailor, which I am not, though I enjoyed the sea as a regular scuba diver for many decades. Our lives went different ways though we crossed paths many times.

Yes, the news is for me sad and depressing but such is life. All good lives do come to an end which I accept. Mine too, eventually.

Let’s move on.

Al always had complete trust in all that he chose to be close to him. An explainer at heart with deep conviction of understanding nature and those who encountered him. Simplicity of complexity an art he mastered. A rare character living in multifarious cultural environment countering confrontation with generosity, honesty and humor. His wisdom and patient ability to comprehend the collateral consequences of the decisions he would ultimately have to make on a daily basis was gift few possessed. ATC will be missed by all he touched. May the close family he knitted together always be blessed by his loving kindness.

Gigi and I are very saddened by the shocking news of AI's passing. We both were privileged to have worked with him during his early years in Thailand. Al was very supportive of my career as a lawyer and introduced me to mining and petroleum laws. He encouraged me to improve on my rudimentary skills in sailing which I failed miserably. Our friendship extended beyond the years when he was Managing Partner of my firm, KKRV (now known as ILCT). I have no doubt that he will be truly missed by his friends and acquaintances in Thailand. May his soul Rest In Peace, Gigi and I will remember him in our prayers.

We met Al through our kind, caring and passionate colleague Sue Chandler. To be honest, we did not know Al that well, but we were lucky enough to be invited to the Chandler's several times during our years in Thailand, and it was clear that Al's generosity was limited only by the size of his home and his table. If he and Sue could, it was pretty clear they would have made room for far more people - their openness and generosity probably meant a lifetime of ever-expanding friendships. We are very sorry for your loss.
