Love poured out of Susan Foster like water through Niagara Falls, just as bountifully and endlessly. She was infinitely smart, wise, kind, gentle, capable, tolerant, and patient -- and when the occasion demanded, she could summon fierce determination to match.

As a member of the newly formed Advisory Council of Women at JPL in 1979, Susan was one of the driving forces that resulted in Caltech and JPL establishing the Child Educational Center (CEC), a child care program for working parents at JPL. She also served on the first CEC Board of Trustees and helped guide the CEC's development in the early years. In the 42 years since then, the CEC has helped thousands of children reach their full potential -- and has helped thousands of moms (and dads!) maintain their careers as scientists and engineers in America's space program.

Susan was deservedly proud of her role in establishing Pasadena's McDonald Park in 1982, a lovely five-acre space in the heart of the city's famous Bungalow Heaven. Featuring a children's play area, a softball diamond, handball courts, picnic facilities, and more, McDonald Park has brought pleasure to countless Angelenos -- making it a fitting legacy indeed.

Susan’s "swan song" at JPL was In 2007, when she was instrumental in helping to instigate a 28-plaintiff lawsuit against the federal government, NASA v. Nelson, that sought to protect the informational privacy of her JPL co-workers against intrusive Homeland Security badging and privacy issues. The lawsuit went as far as the United States Supreme Court. Though the plaintiffs did not prevail in the end, Susan was never sorry she fought the right fight. Susan was not shy about making 'Good Mischief.'

A real blessing from the HSPD-12 law suit was the fortuitous friendship Susan made with one of the younger defendants, Scott Maxwell, a Mars rover driver (literally!). Susan was so struck by his integrity, brilliance and courage that she proposed to "adopt" him, and when he agreed to having her as his "Foster-Mom," Roberto and Susan were both very pleased! Scott soon started dating a brilliant (and beautiful) Mars systems-engineer and planetary scientist named Kimberly Lichtenberg (daughter of Byron Lichtenberg, retired Space Shuttle payload specialist, i.e., astronaut!). Naturally, Roberto adopted Kim, and she and Scott were soon married, with Susan and Roberto both officiating! (Those mail-order preacher certificates are pretty handy.) Not surprisingly, Kim and Scott soon produced a (grand)child -- a brilliant and beautiful Earthling named "Bitty Beto" (Robert Byron Maxwell).

Susan had recently connected up with a new (to her) cousin in the area, named Kalyn Caine, through 23andMe. Kalyn (27) is Susan’s 5th cousin, twice removed, on Susan’s father’s side. Kalyn and her boyfriend Angel live close by in Alhambra. She got to see them quite often, a welcome addition to the tribe.

Susan is survived by her husband Roberto Quintana de Foster, their two cats, by their "Foster kids" Scott and Kimberly Maxwell and their gorgeous baby boy Robert (you should see this glorious child!), by her twin brother Stephen and nieces Laura and Kate, and by hundreds of friends and family members whose lives have been forever transformed by the love and kindness she showed them.

As most all of you know… I’ve been hiding out for more than a few years now, since the passing of my beloved Susan.
It was very sad to have to forego a memorial service for our beloved Susan, due to the dreaded covid, but having a virtual memorial on-line has been very healing.
I am finally starting to process the many stages of grief and depression, and I am beginning to emerge from my isolation and to re-engage with the world as it is. Your love and understanding has been very helpful, and I appreciate all of you very much.
One of the things I have discovered to be very helpful for me to heal through my terrible loss, has been to try and embrace the sadness and grief and to transform it all into Gratitude.
Gratitude for having been loved by our wonderful Susan, and for having had such a loving and compassionate soul to share this miraculous gift of life with; and Gratitude for all the beautiful people and relationships that she has brought into my life!
(Most all of you folks!)
So with that in mind… I have arranged for a beautiful Memorial Bench to be installed at our local park, here in our neighborhood, that Susan helped to found back in the early 80’s.
McDonald Park is located on Mountain and Mar Vista, between Hill and Lake Avenue. Susan was deservedly proud of her role in establishing Pasadena's McDonald Park in 1982, a lovely five-acre space in the heart of our city's famous Bungalow Heaven. Featuring a children's play area, a softball diamond, handball courts, picnic facilities, and more.
Since its founding McDonald Park has brought pleasure to countless Angelenos -- making it a fitting legacy. And now there is a beautiful new Memorial Bench dedicated to her there, in the north-east corner behind the baseball backstop, with her name on it!
You can’t miss it!

More Gratitude!
As with most projects, Susan’s Memorial Bench Monument involved several phases, and there are many people to thank for their generosity and expertise.
First of all, of course, are all the folks over at The City of Pasadena Parks, Recreation and Community Services.
The Installation Crew: Park Supervisor Carl Jones and assistant Danny who not only laid the concrete pad(s) in the park but also picked up Susan’s Memorial from my home and studio, transported it to the park, and expertly installed the Memorial. Thanks Guys, you did a great job!
I would especially like to give a huge Shout-Out to the  Parks Program Coordinator, Jason Vega.
This project would not have happened without Mr. Vega’s help and guidance! He assisted me every step of the way, shepherding me through the entire process. From supplying me with the Public Monument Policy and all the documents necessary to put together the proposal application to be submitted to the Recreation and Parks Commission for the creation and installation of this Memorial Bench Monument, including the preliminary internal review, to actually submitting the proposal on my behalf to the Commission and receiving a unanimous approval from the board! Very impressive!
                                  Thank You Jason!
Last, but certainly not least, I am very grateful to my good friend and neighbor Peter Koroghlian over at Innovative Designs and Manufacturing Inc., in Azusa.
                           www.idmifurnishings.com
Peter was a great admirer and a dear friend of our Beloved Susan!
When Peter heard of my plans for Susan’s Memorial Monument, he graciously and generously offered to donate the bench! Peter had the bench prepped and painted, installed the plaque, and delivered the bench!
           Peter, What a Guy! … You-Really-Are-The-Man!
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

When you can, go and visit Susan's Memorial Bench at McDonald Park.
All my love to you -Roberto Quintana de Foster

Susan My Beloved, Farewell.

On a forgotten journey
to somewhere once
a long time ago
I found myself
distracted by a beautiful
wildflower, bright and true,
growing amid the roses.
I came to you
down by the river
like a perfect fool
as Parsifal to Blanchefleur.
Your scent filled my senses
and I became drunk with you!
And dreamed…
The Drunkards’ Dream
of hearth and home
and contentment.
My cup overflowing
as you poured your love into me.
Your love transformed me.
Transformed my World.
Transformed my Universe.
My Forever Love.
My all, My ally.
My Wild Iris
Mi Corazon.

..But now the banquet is over
the courtyard stands empty
the drawbridge withdrawn.
The Grail Castle has vanished!
Now I know the treachery
of the lost precious.
The bewilderment of Parsifal
abandoned and lost
in a wilderness of pain and sorrow.
Now I know the despair of Rumi
at the murder and loss
of Shams of Tabriz.
Queen of my Heart
My Forever Love.
My Perfect, Perfect Love.
I miss you so much…
Without you
I am like a speck of dust
blown away
in the breeze..

Thank you to everyone who has posted on this memorial to my Beloved Susan. My door will always be open to all of you.

I was thinking of you two yesterday and telling myself that it was a long time since I heard from you. What a shock when I learned the news this morning.
You both welcomed me with open arms into your beautiful house and life a few years ago during my trip in America and I will never forget it.
Susan was extremely kind, generous and sweet and I keep very good memories of her in my heart.
This picture of you two taken at the Huntington Gardens is so precious and I keep it in my computer since all these years.
I'm so sorry for your loss Roberto and I'm thinking of you.

How I remembered Susan...
...not enough words.
Roberto, There was never a moment of any day, any breath, that she did not make you smile..
Every time, you even thought of her, you laughed with that Roberto signature laugh..
I remember Susan as the energy that churned up your artwork..
And when we worked together ,, you, just thinking about her made you drive like a MAD MAN to get home.."Thats true and you know it."..
Remember the painting I did, from her words,. Well, maybe a picture IS worth a thousand words..
Where you live, when you moved in to this home, and why...
That story, is, "HER story",. In her own words. I truly have had the honor of being able to do by best to share her vision and her memory of your home.
I miss her laugh, her cooking and snacks. .."A whole lot better than us passing through the "fast food",drive through. And our health..
She will also always be apart of me being a better person too.
I think I can say that for anyone who knew her.
I truly love you both always for that...
The art blossomed in this house. it spills over, onto, and into your walls. and maybe most likely your floors too..
I loved how she was a part of the community, in "ALL respects".
The food, the rules, the laws, the land, the roads, the people, the boundaries, the principles.
Hell,, she should have been mayor..
She was, and you might say ,, still is a true part of the "village", the "community".
she did not go without "PLANTING" . And she did. I still have some growing in my yard.:) and in my "heArt and soul"
Love you both

My heart ached upon learning of Susan’s passing. I met Susan in 1989 at JPL when working for Jay Schmuecker’s group (MASS). She welcomed me with open arms and encouraged me throughout my employment at JPL when I finally left in the fall of 2000. Susan had a joyful heart and made everyone comfortable with her continual patience and smiles. Although I moved from California and made Albuquerque my home I still felt a connection to Susan. She and Roberto welcomed me in their home when I could find time to visit the Pasadena area. I will miss her! And Roberto, may it comfort you to know that so many others share your sorrow. God Bless you and all of Susan’s friends.

Sandi, I’m overjoyed to find see that you are still around. About 20 years ago I last saw you at Exit 102. I first met Susan after she started work as a secretary in MIcky Alper’s section. Later she was the Division 35 Office Secretary prior to transferring to the Documentation Section. She did an excellent job in providing documentation support to me. She also sewed up my suit coat during the Campus review of the project. I loved and admired her.

Steven And Rose a publié un hommage .

We met Susan and Roberto some 25-30 years ago, through their neighbors Ron and Suzie. The six of us became good friends along with Steve and Jeannette and eventually the eight of us became “the Rowdies”. (Now I’m wondering if that period should go after the quote, or before. Susan would know, of course.) We shared a lot of good food, good conversation, and good laughs together, over the years.
This photo of Susan and Roberto, taken almost 20 years ago, exemplifies the two of them. Always together and always so much in love. Whenever we'd share a meal or visit with them, they insisted that they sit side-by-side, no ifs, ands, or buts. They were inseparable and forever intertwined in their love, and that's how we'll always remember Susan. She loved Roberto so much.
She was generous and loving to old friends and to new ones. She had a gentle touch, a way of giving advice (but only when asked). She was smart and inquisitive, always wanting to know the source of a social media post to be sure it was credible information. She was the ultimate investigator. And she had a hearty laugh. She loved to laugh.
Steven and I are so sorry, Roberto. We know that Susan’s love and spirit will be with you always.

A real mensch Susan. Not many people I've met are able to embrace their own humanity like Susan. Humble, intelligent, kind, warm, generous, witty, spiritual, selfless... these are some of the character traits I observed over my time knowing this lovely lady.

I got to know Susan when my father, a long-time friend of Roberto's, had hit rock bottom and she helped find him a safe place to live that just happened to be around the corner from their house. What a blessing for me and my father!! Susan welcomed my dad into their home for meals and checked in on him and was generally just a supportive friend. My dad teased her by calling her "mom" but I know he appreciated her. When my son and I came to visit, she welcomed us into their home and provided a space for my dad to connect with his grandson Anton. One of my highlight memories was spending Easter together in Susan and Roberto's home with a couple friends of mine as well. We revived my dad's old Lithuanian-tradition of egg-making involving onion skins. It just was one of those occasions where everything came together and felt enjoyable, simple, easy. Susan was nurturing and good at "adulting". When my father went into liver failure and was nearing the end of his life, it was Susan that guided and protected me. She called me in Germany, relayed doctors assessments and helped me decided the best course of action in those critical first days. Before my arrival, she had his apartment cleaned so I wouldn't have to witness the state of his decline before hospitalisation; she gently prepared me for his death and finally, it was Susan's sweet voice that woke me in the middle of the night and told me my father had passed away. There was no one I would rather have had break that news to me. She continued to be there for me and even my mother- while Susan was battling her own cancer, she made the effort to bring my mom to the City of Hope research center. Its just amazing what a good person she was.

I was very down that I didn't make it to see her one more time, I didn't know the time was running thin. But I feel like she hears us all somehow. I am grateful that she got to meet my new partner and love of my life Chris on our last visit. I am grateful to have known her and wish Roberto peace through this journey of loss. You were both very lucky. Much love, Daena, Anton & Casper (and of course Link) I will miss you Susan.

I’ve been waiting for the right words to come to me to share how I feel about Susan. But Susan’s virtues can’t be conveyed with simple words. She had brilliance, kindness, passion, tenderness, wit, precision, grace, talent, patience and knowledge beyond measure. One of my first thoughts when I received the news that Susan had died was, “Who am I going to call when I need advice?” A subsequent thought was “Damn, I didn’t write down any of her recipes.” But mostly it felt like a longing for one of her absolutely perfect hugs, and regret for not calling her more often. In the short time I knew her, she quickly became one of the most important people of my life. We met for the first time in April of last year, for lunch at Millie’s in Pasadena (with her husband Roberto and my partner Angel) after connecting over the internet via the DNA genetic testing site 23andMe. We shared a common ancestor! But Susan was far more to me than my 5th cousin twice removed. She was my friend. She was my teacher. We didn’t have to be related, but I’m so glad that we are. I hope that I carry some of her best genes with me. I hope I can lead a life that’s at least half as full of love and art and laughter and philanthropy as hers was. Reading through everyone’s comments and stories had me laughing, crying and feeling so infinitely grateful to have known her. Her departure from those of us that are still here is most certainly a loss, but it pales in comparison to all that we have gained by experiencing life with her in it.

For two weeks, my mind has been messing with me. I kept reading the email that Roberto sent again and again. Susan? My friend Susan that we had texted each other in June? Less than two months ago? If I don't type this tribute, death did not take Susan away from us, I was convinced. I was supposed to have lunch with Susan and Roberto at their home right after COVID is under control.. I kept telling myself WHAT IF and SHOULD OF......

Where do I began? Susan had kind eyes, nurturing voice, generous heart, child like laughers, and a selfless personality.

Unlike most of you that met her from work and with the blessing of knowing her for decades, I met Susan and Roberto via Pasadena Nextdoor Forum about 4 years ago. I was one of the fundraiser coordinators for my daughter's high school music booster. Susan and I became friends quickly. We went out to lunch. She welcomed me into their home. I brought Porto pastries and had afternoon tea with them. I chatted with her on phone and messaging each other. The last text we exchanged was June 6th of this year. She had just gotten her lab reports with some unpleasant findings but she was more concerned and sad that my daughter didn't get to have her high school graduation. How could someone be so selfless.

From the end of last year, Susan's immune system was too weak to go out. I told her I would bring them lunch and we could just hang out at her house. Within that 7 months, someway or another we had to postpone our gathering. COVID 19 happened, I offered to get their groceries and make them food. She told me her neighbors are taking very good care of them and told me not to worry. She told me that we would get together soon. I OWE HER A LUNCH!!!!

In 1995, one month before their wedding, Bob and I were introduced to Susan and Roberto. It was instant friendship and love and they invited us to their wedding and we went. So many wonderful, fun times followed. Cooking, making art, talking, laughing, attending art venues, etc. There were often 8 of us--4 couples including Meeks and Wright/Bahranis. Those times were full of laughs and strangely delightful conversations and activities. Years later, I started writing and commented that the people editing my work had the most boring job in the world. Susan immediately took issue and informed me that it was what she did and it was fun and she loved it. That formed a new venue for our friendship. Susan had an amazing way of critiquing and suggesting and changing my work so that it was still my writing but it was in an order and with a clarity that I never would have figured out. Since that day long ago, she got me through articles and a dissertation. I loved the supportive notes and all the communications over those years from my loving friend. Susan was one of a kind. She thought long and hard and lived a life true to her belief system and values. She was kind and lovingly candid. She was humble and brilliant and time with her and Roberto was always inspiring. Susan's memory was also amazing. My birthday is April 5 and one year I planned a party to celebrate on April 23 at my daughter's home which was closer to many of my friends than my own. When I invited Susan and Roberto, Susan said "Isn't that little Parker's birthday?" I had inadvertently planned my celebration on the day of my only grandchild's birthday at his home and no one in my family figured it out. So, thanks to Susan, we remembered to celebrate 3 year old Joshua Parker's birthday along with mine. One of our last outings together was to view a student art exhibit in Montclair in which my granddaughter and I were exhibiting. Of course, I had some misgivings as a newbie art student to have Roberto and Susan see my work but it was a glorious and fun day as we lunched together and enjoyed the art pieces that included students from age four up. Susan was in remission from the cancer and I was between cancers. I was first diagnosed 15 years ago after Susan had already started dealing with it. Since then I have been diagnosed and treated for two other kinds. Cancer is a tricky one. But Susan faced it with such grace, optimism and pragmatism over the years. She was a wonderful role model for me as she continued to add quality to her life even during difficult treatment. A true example of appreciating the beauty and wonder of every day. I feel so fortunate that I reached out three weeks ago to ask Susan for one more editing job. Her response was typical Susan hoping only to be able to help. It was one last time of exchanging emails that were candid and loving. Susan has been such a blessing.

Peggy, hi from Linda Larsen Goodwin! I have looked for you on FB over the years wondering what paths your life has taken. I reconnected with Susan several years ago and was so impressed with articles she posted. I had no idea she was ill so was totally shocked to see the post under the PHS website.
I remember you and I think Susan being one of the first of our class to be a truly raving fan of the Beatles in ninth grade. Hope all is well with you.

I was fortunate to work with Susan as a member of the CEC board when it first started. We were the Seniors (namely older people) and spent a lot of time bringing the JPL point of view to the Board - in many cases warning about where we would get pushback from JPL management and in some cases helping make the CEC's case. Susan was always firm and sensible and I was really glad to know her.

I have known Susan since the beginning of my 40 year career at JPL in 1974. I have not met anyone sweeter and more sincere than Susan. She always was kind, thoughtful, and warm. We would stop and chat a few minutes when we ran into one another in the hall of Bldg. 111. As it turns out, we discovered that Susan knew my brother, Larry Lester, from Birkenstock's Pasadena. He enjoyed Susan's visits to the Birkenstock store,as well. Susan was always so compassionate. He and I ran into Susan about a year ago in Conrad's in Pasadena. We had such a great visit, catching up briefly. Larry and I want to express our deepest sorrow on her passing. Heaven did get a new angel when Susan passed. Our prayers are with all her family and friends.

We were meeting at our lawyers' offices during the HSPD-12 lawsuit. I said something -- I can't remember what -- and Susan grinned at me and said, "You know, I think I'm going to adopt you."

I'm just barely smart enough to recognize a good thing when I see it, so I adopted her right back. She became my Foster-Mom, and Roberto became my Quintana-Dad. (When I married Kim, they all adopted each other, too.)

Susan did me thousands of kindnesses over the years. It was the way she said she loved you. When our son arrived early -- while our only bathroom was in the midst of remodeling -- Susan and Roberto opened their home to us. When my irradiated cat (it's a long story) couldn't be near our toddler, Susan and Roberto cleared out a room in their home for her to stay in until she was safe again. She and Roberto officiated at our wedding, dispensing gentle, wise advice that helped us make it just what we wanted.

But so many of the kindnesses were so much smaller -- just one thoughtful gesture after another. How she learned my Byzantine food preferences to make dinners I'd enjoy. How she had just the right word, or just the right touch, when I was sad or frustrated. How she could just look at me with the right expression to make me burst into laughter.

I am grateful to have had Susan in my life, despite the grief her absence leaves. I will never feel that touch again, I know. I will never see that expression again. But I will feel that love forever. I love you, Foster-Mom.

What a generous heart, Roberto's Susan. I met her only a few times. We had the honor of attending their wedding which, among all the weddings in which I've participated, was one of the two memorable events. Somehow she learned my birth date and for several years emailed me on that day. I never learned her birth date. Her communications came when I was in my one-room retreat in Washington State, usually alone, and were especially welcome because she was so interesting, and interested, despite my solitary nature. And we both liked squirrels. Of course, on the day my husband received the ill news, I had a sharp pain of survivor's guilt and went to a window and there was a nice fat gray squirrel on the path outside. Dear good, kind, generous soul, now at peace, how you are missed.

Susan was deservedly proud of her role in establishing Pasadena's McDonald Park in 1982, a lovely five-acre space in the heart of the city's famous Bungalow Heaven. Featuring a children's play area, a softball diamond, handball courts, picnic facilities, and more.
Susan worked hard helping to organize the neighborhood and work with and coordinate with the city and other stakeholders. The Park was finely dedicated with a big celebration on February 6, 1982. The Mayor showed up, there were balloons, a pony-ride, and an antique fire-engine! McDonald Park has brought pleasure to countless Angelenos -- making it a fitting legacy indeed.

I knew Susan for 42 years since she was the editor for my first paper at JPL in 1978. We were fast friends ever since. You could not meet a nicer, funnier more pleasant person. Through good times and bad right through HSPD12 and beyond she was a rock. As a senior JPL manager, when random amounts of cash would appear on my desk or be handed to me in the hallway during the legal effort, I would collect them and let Susan know there was a plain unmarked envelope on her desk for deposit - she was our treasurer. Whether handing out leaflets, stamping envelopes or meeting with the press or our lawyers, Susan was there, happy as a clam and intensely pursuing the cause. Although we lost at the Supreme Court, Susan was not discouraged that many of us had to leave JPL earlier than planned. She happily joined the effort for the winning NLRB challenge to JPL's unfair labor practice. Her unbridled joy and delight at beating the "Wicked Witch of the West" and her minions at the JPL Inhuman Resources warms my heart to this day. Susan was a jewel, a resource, a friend and an inspiration. Roberto, you were lucky to have her and she you. May her memory always be bright.

Thank you, Dennis, for reminding us of Susan’s support in pushing back against ‘Big Brother’ and the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’ in our case before the National Labor Relations Board
Susan traveled from Pasadena to the NLRB court room in West LA for a week to sit with a few ‘Davids’ (that would be us) struggling against two ‘Goliaths’ – Caltech and the white shoe corporate law firm of Paul Hastings. The witch was the chief Caltech cheerleader.
On the first day of the hearing the NLRB administrative judge, William G. Kocal, entered the courtroom. Susan leaned over to me and said, “I have a good feeling about this guy”. She was right.
A few days later the Witch took the stand. Judge Kocal gave her a courteous and polite hearing.
Some weeks later Judge Kocal issued his opinion. He ruled in our favor. He reserved a few choice words in characterizing the testimony offered by the witch. It had no credibility.
Caltech and Hastings, at taxpayer expense, appealed the NLRB decision through the NLRB appeals process. Judge Kocal was upheld at each step.
In the end, a new Caltech President wisely through in the towel. As a result, workers nationwide were able to use company email to discuss workplace related matters. Thank you Judge Kocal.
Judge Kocal passed on recently.
Susan now joins Judge Kocal. May they enjoy a few beers together as they reminisce about witches and our case.

I was fortunate to meet Susan and her soul mate, Roberto, through mutual friends, Suzie and Ron Cyger. My strongest memory/image of Susan is her standing in a line of about 20 others surrounding Throop Memorial Church In Pasadena (sponsors of the protest), each holding a sign protesting the sending of troops to Iraq. The gathering was completely silent. I was just out walking. As others have said- Susan was one of the most committed persons I've ever met in terms of peace and justice issues. She put her money where her mouth was and she put her body where her commitments were. She was also friendly, warm and loving to all her many friends and I have never seen such love as there was between Susan and Roberto in my life. We will all miss her.

I first met Susan in her initial days at JPL. She was outgoing and friendly, witty and wise, and we soon became pals as well as colleagues. Susan had a burning desire to make JPL and the world at large a better place, and I couldn't resist the opportunity to tease her about her activism. Tongue in cheek, I accused her of being a bomb throwing radical, so Susan - never short for words - responded by calling me a red neck reactionary. In truth, our social and political views were pretty similar, but admitting it would have taken all the fun out of our exchanges. I tracked Susan's career trajectory as she made her presence known through both her professional work and her initiatives to make JPL a more humane workplace. We worked together one last time during my tenure as Deputy Director, when Susan and Suzanne - the dynamic duo - were tasked to produce documentation covering ongoing Lab initiatives. She understood the Laboratory from bottom to top and from side to side, and that informed perspective shone through in her work. It was a joy to work with her at JPL and a privilege to call her my good friend for the past half century. The world seems a little empty with her gone.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said about her loving and enveloping kindness. I would like to stress perhaps Susan‘s strong moral, ethical core. I hate to resort to clichés, but she walked the walk. And more than anyone I’ve ever known she literally and figuratively “put her money where her mouth was”, specifically when it came to leaving JPL to stand up for her beliefs. I don’t think I’ve ever known anyone else who so acted on their beliefs. We shall all miss her strong role model.

I met Susan 40 years ago at JPL when we were both in the Documentation Section, first at Foothill and then at the Lab. We quickly became close friends and remained so, even after I left the Lab in 1996 to join the faculty at Cal State LA.

Susan was brilliant and hilarious, with a deep expertise as an editor. She was also patient and caring and was a tireless listener. She was probably my closest friend, but I was just one of her many close friends. (That says a lot about Susan and I hope not too much about me!)

Susan was a master of many things, but I will remember her most as a master of affirmation. She simply made people feel good about themselves. I believe that she practiced affirmation consciously, as I remember her sending me emails about its power maybe 20 years ago now. She was incredibly skilled in it--not always an easy task for an editor. She did not always see the good in people but she would be their champion if she saw that their cause was just. She was big on tolerance but not necessarily on acceptance. She was uplifting to be around because of this.

Susan practically invented inclusive. That's why the picture I chose to share is one she's not even in. It's from Thanksgiving at the Quintana-Foster home in 2019, and shows a few of the people she gathered into her home and heart that evening. Youngest and oldest guest are pictured, which I like about it. And the diversity of the table--Angel's amazing black beans and the traditional turkey carved so lovingly and expertly by Roberto. I will miss this tradition and I expect those of you who have attended in the past will miss it too. A number of you may even miss my huckleberry pies. Susan always made me feel so good about my huckleberry pies.

Although she helped facilitate many writers to achieve their goals and dreams, and probably put a lot of robots on Mars that wouldn't be there without her persuasiveness, Susan never wrote her own masterpiece. I was thinking about that this week, and I concluded that Susan's own life was her masterpiece. Her life, the home she and Roberto created, and the people she brought into it. Her community and her workplace that she nurtured and left behind better places.

Susan embodied tolerance and I will miss her little car with the "coexist" bumper sticker. However, she also fought injustice fiercely and with integrity. And I have seen her angry with the world but never at an individual she was with. Susan did not like personal confrontation but she had a powerful pen and was quick to open her pocketbook for the causes she wanted to support. She had many causes, and some of them wandered around lost on two legs (and some even on four--like her autistic cats). Susan was always there to help, even when she knew it would only help a little or for a little while.

I have learned so much from Susan over the years, from how to better understand people's motives to the proper use of a semicolon. I miss her greatly and offer my heartfelt condolences to Roberto and the rest of us who were blessed by her love.

Like many of us, I was blessed to meet Susan during my time at JPL. As a young twenty-something, my very first project after arriving on lab was a very large proposal. I was often intimidated and felt under-water with the technical team that was putting together the proposal. But almost every afternoon and evening was spent with Susan and her team, making sure it was perfect. Susan provided a sense of calm, level-headedness, and, honestly, just deep kindness. I enjoyed every moment that we had to spend together, and visited often even after the proposal was submitted. Since then (jeeze, close to 9 years ago), we didn't converse much, but when we did, it was always a lovely reminder of what an amazing human she is. I love how outspoken she was, and her unambiguously good moral compass. But mostly, she was just a deeply kind human being.

Honestly, just a few weeks ago, I saw something she posted on Facebook and was going to write her on how much I appreciated what she was saying. I'm saddened to this day that I didn't reach out.

Susan --

Thank you for everything. Thank you for being a guiding light to me early in my professional career. But mostly, thank you for being an amazing and kind human being. The world is just a little bit worse without you in it, but the world is a whole lot better because you were in it.

With love and a heavy heart,
Eric

I met Susan at JPL when I needed a technical documentation person. She was the best technical editor. No matter how big and messy the job was, she was always calm and in control. She and I built trust for each other while we were working together. When I had to leave JPL unexpectedly, her support gave me hope for the next chapter of my life. Even if I left JPL, she kept in touch with me. She always inspired me to stand up for fairness and justice. About two months ago, she saw JPL's age discrimination news on TV and congratulated me. She provided me endless support and encouragement to fight against JPL's ageism. She told me what I went through is a very sad journey, with a reasonably happy ending! She understood every small pain I went through, but she never mentioned about her pain. She tried to feel my pain so she can alleviate my distress. Susan was exceptionally alert, intelligent, and kind person, and most of all she could understand other people's feelings whether it's good or bad feelings without being in the same situation. She was like a mind reader to me. She saw through me, I couldn't disguise my feelings with her. I miss you, Susan. This world needs more people like you who constantly maintain honesty and integrity. God be with you, Roberto!

It’s difficult to accept that Susan has left this earth because there’s no one else like her walking among us. No one can take her place. I treasure the time we spent talking about everything from work to philosophy, and I am forever grateful that she and Roberto so generously opened up their home to me when I was getting back on my feet. When I first started working at JPL, I was pleasantly surprised by her honesty and sharp intellect. I’d never met anyone who so candidly spoke out against injustice. Most dear irreplaceable Susan. What an extraordinary woman, priceless friend and profound loss. Truly, there was no one like her. She touched so many lives. We will miss her terribly.
She had a brilliant mind, a gentle and loving heart. She was supportive and encouraging to her friends but she did not suffer fools because she was fiercely principled. So politically astute, we know that we will often ask ourselves, "I wonder what Susan would say about this?" Her laugh was unmistakable, even a little raucous.
And her marriage with Roberto was a true love affair. We grieve for him and his immeasurable loss. Susan often said that she and her beloved husband cherished each day they had together, that each day was "such a precious gift." There is a lovely passage from Victor Hugo which calls Susan to mind because of her bravery and spirit.
Be like the bird
That, pausing in her flight
Awhile on boughs too slight
Feels them give way
Beneath her and yet sings,
Knowing that she hath wings.

In one email, I made a typographical error and signed Mush love instead of Much love. Susan loved it! So we ended our emails frequently with Mush love.
So, mush love. Rest in peace, dear one. Margo and Carlos

Susan was among the most intelligent, generous, kind and thoughtful women we have ever had the honor of knowing.
She was always dedicated to the good fight and ready to do whatever was necessary to uplift others.
Both she and Roberto were rare and unique individuals who were uniquely suited for each other.
Their love was always inspirational. They never stopped caring for and about each other. They were so sweet and tender, always holding hands. They showed us by example what true love means. And what it means to share their love and consideration with all who were lucky enough to cross their paths.
We are so fortunate to have had her as our sister in law. She is deeply missed even as we know her spirit continues to enlighten us all.

I will miss you, Susan. You were so kind, gentle, sweet and intelligent. It was a pleasure and an honor to know you. You and Roberto were a unique couple. I remember you said when you first saw him, your heart went “pitty-pat!” We had great times at SLIK, too. Thank you for your invitations to art exhibitions, music and books at Caravan Bookstore on Green Street.

Your media shares were so often about compassion for people and their causes, animals, and even, lately, our bee friends. You were fascinated by a unique looking rose in my yard, when you saw it on Facebook. Good bye, my long-time friend. You will be sorely missed.

Putting aside those responsible for my hiring, Susan was the very first JPL employee whom I met upon my first day of employment there - on the top floor of the Administration Building, in a temporary office. Her own office was located in a building that was a very short stroll from the building in which my own office was eventually located and I visited her frequently. She helped integrate me into the ways and means of JPL and of many of its often incredible cast of characters. Her quiet, often humorous , and very astute observations were of immense value. Susan was kind, gentle, steadfast, level-headed, generous in spirit and possessed of enormous personal integrity. Not unexpectedly, she was also excellent at what she did. I respected and admired her tremendously. In Roberto she had a partner who, in many ways was very much her twin, yet possessed of his own substantial presence and talent. My heart goes out to him and to all of those who knew, valued and loved her her and mourn her. News of her death was unexpected and I miss her terribly.

Susan was a force of nature. She brought forth the very best in people and challenged everyone to help her make the world a better place. Susan made a difference -- whether it was creating a loving place for children to grow and explore, helping young writers hone their craft, or supporting friends who needed her steady caring and love. Because of Susan, many of us are better, kinder, stronger people. She had perfected the art of unconditional love and of giving her time and talents completely to a cause to make the impossible happen. She never gave up, even when faced with overwhelming odds or the seemingly insurmountable bureaucracy of JPL or the Federal Government. With a moral compass set firmly to true North, Susan set an example for those of us blessed to know her and to help us keep to our convictions. I was lucky enough to share an office with Susan for many years, and to learn how she always brought compassion for others first and foremost to how she dealt with people. Roberto--you transformed her world and brought her such joy and completion. Today our hearts are breaking and the world seems a dimmer place without her. But, Susan's impact reaches across generations, her light will always shine in the faces of children at the CEC, in the words of writers striving to share the stories of space exploration, and in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Susan -- you will always be my golden girl.

Though I am sad to see Susan go prematurely, I am thankful for the life of love and generosity she lived, and thankful to have gotten to know her, even if only relatively briefly. In November of 2017, Susan, along with Roberto, seemingly randomly invited the stranger who had recently moved into the granny flat in the backyard of the home across the street into their home for Thanksgiving dinner. That stranger was me, a second-year graduate student living 2000 miles from home who certainly wasn't expecting to actually have a Thanksgiving dinner! I was surprised and heartened by their kindness, and this kind of unconditional and unexpected kindness and interest in the welfare of others is the thing I will always remember about Susan, and try to express better in my own life. It was always a joy to stop by and chat with Susan; after awhile, she started to feel like a grandmother of sorts. She was caring but also fun-loving; I enjoyed the themed dinners we had to commemorate the Great Molasses Flood, the Alaska dinner, and of course the raising and netting party for Roberto's legendary geodesic dome. She will be missed.

Donna D'amore a publié un hommage .

I was blessed to meet Susan when a mutual friend brought her to my Healing Arts Center about 13 years ago. I know her as a sweet, kind, incredibly intelligent woman. A number of years ago I was honored to be invited to do a Tree blessing ceremony in Susan & Roberto's back yard. So moved by the experience, I wrote the following article in tribute to Susan, Roberto and their Box Elder tree. I share it now in fond remembrance of an extraordinary woman:

IN PRAISE OF TREES

by Rev. Donna D’Amore

In Native American tradition, trees are considered the Elders of the earth. Being in the presence of a mature tree, you will usually experience a sense of calmness, tranquility and serenity. Sitting with a tree and feeling its spirit will often assist you in receiving wisdom and clarity, and put you in a state of mind which is conducive to obtaining thoughtful answers to your questions. It is proper to care for and respect these wise Elders who have much to share with us.

Recently, a dear couple was faced with a troubling situation which called for the removal of a beloved family tree. In the process of remodeling Susan’s childhood home, the only way they would be in compliance with county housing regulations for their expansion would be to remove the very old, large Box Elder tree which had lived on the property for many years. Roberto and Susan were terribly saddened by this situation, and asked me to perform a blessing ceremony for their tree. By doing so, they would be able to send off this beautiful tree in a loving manner, and could make peace with having to bid adieu to a cherished friend.

Being one who holds a great reverence for trees, plants and nature in general, I was honored to conduct the blessing – and set about preparing a ceremony which would accord this esteemed Box Elder dignity in her final days. The elder tree is said to be one of protection, and early folklore praises the Elder’s ability to ward off malevolent spirits and undo evil spells. Elder blossoms were worn at Celtic festivals to signify magic, and elder twigs were woven into a headdress to enable the wearer to see spirits. Its branches were hung in doorways to guard the home, and its twigs were carried for personal protection.

Susan and Roberto invited a few close friends to join in the farewell ritual for Mother Elder. As we stood beneath her massive limbs, something quite amazing occurred. What had been a completely still, silent June afternoon in southern California, suddenly became alive with wind! As we spoke to Mother Elder, reading poems and prayers in her honor, we all noticed her leaves beginning to rustle in answer to our words. It was truly as if the spirit of this magnificent tree heard us and was actively participating in the ceremony. I looked about, and observed that the breeze was only swirling around this particular tree; the leaves were not moving in the other trees on the property or in the neighboring yard. It was a sublime moment of intimate connection with a kindred being.

I explained to Mother Elder that we were seeking her permission for the removal, as it had become necessary for the household to release her from the earth in which she had been rooted. We thanked her for the service and protection she had offered throughout her lifetime, and sent her on her journey with love, respect, gratitude and appreciation for the gifts she had shared over the years. Roberto, Susan and their friends were able to stand in the presence of this special tree and say their good-byes. While performing the final blessing, I suggested that a few limbs should be kept in remembrance and for protection. I plan to add one of Mother Elder’s branches to my own healing altar, as her powerful spirit touched my heart deeply.

Reading this personal account of how Susan and Roberto cherished their special family tree may evoke memories of your own. Perhaps you will recall a certain tree from your childhood that you played beneath, whose branches you climbed or whose limbs you swung upon. In my youth there were several such significant trees, but one in particular stands out. It was my next door neighbors’ stately Eucalyptus tree – which was enormous and stood in the middle of their very large back lot. A wooden bench had been built around the huge trunk, and that bench was usually the “free” spot when we played tag or other children’s games. I used to love touching the smooth, cool bark of that Eucalyptus tree, as it always made me feel safe and protected.

Although trees are all too often taken for granted, neglected or even mistreated, what would our lives be like without them? Where would birds build their nests and raise their babies? How would buildings and streets be shaded? Where would squirrels play and search for food? How would wildlife be sheltered? Where would our fruit come from? How would our air be filtered?

Perhaps you may begin to build a closer connection with the trees which you encounter in your daily life, for they are truly sacred beings. They are the elders who stand in silent service. Should you find yourself in a situation where one of your trees is ailing – or where removal is anticipated – try communicating with its spirit. Share some loving, healing energy with your tree and see what response you may receive. Place your hands on their trunks and you cannot help but feel the strength of the life force which flows within. Speak to them from your heart – they will hear you.

This article is offered in tribute to Susan and Roberto’s Box Elder, and to all the magnificent trees which grace our world.

I also really enjoyed our deep email conversations over the years, together. You've been so generous with your love and your thoughtful gifts. I'll miss your sense of humor. Thanks for being an awesome aunt, and for making the world a better place. Roberto, thanks for being an awesome uncle and thanks for partnering with Susan to brighten this world. I met Susan in JPL. She was instrumental in putting together several winning proposals for me. Without her, our group would not be as big as we have now. Even though she is technical writer, she understood the science and gave so much time in critically going through the materials and re-writing to convey the message in simple form.
Science is our forte but she made that complicated writing into simple form so that the reviewer understood the message. She was also creative in making us to convey the message in graphic form rather than lengthy wordy document. We miss her professionally.
In addition to her professional involvement she was always kind and we exchanged our home grown fruits. She visited our house with Roberto and had good memories of her. She is always have big smile which is contagious. Our deep heartfelt sympathies to her family especially Roberto. Hope he will carry her legacy.

I met Susan at JPL in 1978. She was Susan Pikul (If I remember correctly) but changed her name back to Susan Foster that year. She was beautiful, with a dazzling smile, and all I wanted to do was hang around her and absorb her wonderful vibe. She had a very advanced soul, bordering on angelic. Everything that happened to her, and she saw some tough deals, she somehow managed to find a way to make peace with and it made her sweeter. Her sense of caring about others, in spite of seeing their faults, was confounding to me at that time. She would characterize a person's behavior as 'loud and obnoxious' - we would laugh, and somehow that took the sting out of it. I remember one of her favorite sayings 'somebody must be blamed' whenever I started a rant about the poor condition of whatever I was complaining about. She was probably the most loving person I have ever met, and once you knew her, you could somehow never forget how special she was. Although I was not the right man for her, we kept in touch, and I was so glad when she found Roberto, the one who truly realized what a treasure she was - and will remain in all our hearts.

I have one little story, among so many. At work his cellphone would chirp and Roberto would say "Oh, it's Susan". "Hi Honey,". he'd answer. I have rarely heard such warmth, love , and gladness in a greeting - and I heard it every time it was Susan. That same love and joy was on their faces when they looked at one another, and spoke to one another. There is a line from an E.E. Cummings poem. It says, "i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)" Dear Roberto and Susan, thank you for always reminding me what that looks like.

How poetically appropriate it is that Susan's last name is Foster. Susan lovingly fostered so much in her life, from causes born of moral conviction, to every person she came in contact with, to Roberto, her life's love. Several people have referred to Susan as their "work mother", and she was certainly that to me. For someone who never bore a child of her own, Susan was a maternal influence of astonishing fecundity at work and in her community, including to many other parents' children. Someone once said of her that she'd have made the best mom ever. So true, but Susan was already a beloved nurturer of humanity. Her intellect, wisdom, and wit alone were profound. But Susan also generously shared the warmth of her unique human kindness and genuine caring everywhere she went.

Susan displayed such exquisite "common sense"; the kind that turns out isn't really that common. So I will say she had "rare sense". She could make you think about a cherished idea more deeply, and either modify or strengthen it, based on her insight. She was keenly observant and perceptive, in a deeply thoughtful way, understanding and embracing so much about science, art, life, and human nature, over the seven decades of her rich and gracious life.

Finally, dear Susan, my apologies. No doubt I have misplaced at least one comma, misused a semi-colon, or garbled something grammatically, for which I could've used your amazing editorial skills to make correct. Who will help us express ourselves, and be understood with precision, succinctness, and clarity now? We will all muse to ourselves, from now on, "What would Susan think....?"

I met Susan at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where we both worked back in 1989. Susan was the kind of person who had an impact on the people she encountered. For me it was immediate. When I met her, I was new to NASA-JPL. I had never worked for such a large organization. Susan, on the other hand, had been there for more than 30 years at the time of our meeting. Her working environment was decorated with all kinds of things that made one feel “at home”- knick-knacks, pieces of art – her space was as inviting as she was. Over the next 30+ years, we developed a friendship. We’d meet for long lunches where we’d talk about everything from great works of non-fiction to local farmer’s markets to social justice especially as it pertained to race. She and Roberto would host wonderful intimate gatherings in the lovely home they’d painstakingly and beautifully refurbished. She talked to me a lot about how much she loved Roberto – the love of her life. Theirs was a relationship to model.
Susan was a dear friend. Our friendship didn’t need to be watered often. Sometimes we’d go for long periods and not hear from one another. Such was the case when I last saw Susan and Roberto. My husband Dick had just completed his final radiation treatment. The tradition is, at the completion of the radiation sessions, the patient rings a large bell that is heard throughout the waiting area in the radiology department. Everyone stands and gives a round of applause acknowledging the successful completion of a major milestone. When Dick rang the bell and the two of us walked through the waiting room smiling at the folks who were cheering him on, there was Susan with Roberto. We looked at each other, somewhat in disbelief. They congratulated Dick. My heart sunk because I didn’t know why Susan and Roberto were in that waiting room. I hugged Susan and promised to contact her later. It was then that I learned why they were there. Susan never complained. When I called her, we talked about when we’d get together for lunch. She told me I’d have to come to her. I promised I would. And then came Covid. I was never able to make it there for that lunch. I will miss her wise counsel, her generous spirit, her gentle presence. I send deepest sympathies to Roberto.

Roberto, we only met you and Susan once when you hosted us in your home a couple of evenings some years ago when we visited our daughter in Pasadena with Patrick and Mary Gothard. That brief meeting was so comfortable and enegizing that we often commented on it with our family and friends. We left your home with a renewed commitment to the struggle for justice in seemiingly insignificant ordinary manifestations of injustice as well as its systemic embodiment. It may or may not be coincidental that last week I was searching for a photo for a piece I was writing and came across a bunch of photos of you and Susan. I paused and called Dot to come and relive our visit with you. Even many years later we felt the warmth and energy of the life experiences we shared. It was as if our visit were only a month or so ago. So we receive the news of Susan's passing with sadness for your loss and gratitude for her inspiring life. May you be sustained by the love of friends, family and people like us whose life was affirmed and recharged through what seemed like a brief encounter on the path of a common journey. ¡Qué Dios le acompañe!

I've met Susan only a few times, mostly at JPL and it became pretty clear that she was the kindest person I ever met. The best memory I have of her is not what she said or a picture. I do't remember where or when, bus she once gave me a nice big hug, I think it was during Scott and Kim wedding. That hug still warms my heart.

In a world where anger and evil is accepted, even encouraged sometimes, she was a force that we need to perpetuate. Next time you see some evil being done, let's make an effort and be extra kind. That would be the best legacy she leaves to us all.

Oh Roberto, I am absolutely stunned; you guys are the greatest; i wish you strength and love in the days ahead; can we go at a distance to the burial; Susan was a love jug, and of course you are too.. You were like Velcro Strips; if it helps; Bill and I were that close also, and his love was very healing tome, and his filled me up with the energy to go on and thrive. Is there anything I can do; i will say prayers today and, and, and. With sorrow for your loss and much love.

For a week I've been thinking about how I feel and how I experienced my most dear friend, Susan Foster. I have a story -- We met at JPL in 1979 when I started as a student employee. By then Susan was already a seasoned JPLer. We were introduced by a mutual friend, Sally Walters. Sally was an outgoing, passionate woman and she introduced me to many of her like minded friends.  We were all close in age, however, I felt like a wallflower compared to them. Then as time went on they brought out these hidden qualities in me and I became embedded in the JPL community.
To me Susan was a kindred spirit; we were close friends for 40+ years. The kind of friend who you might not see often, but the moment we'd reconnect felt like it was just yesterday. We'd talk for hours if time permitted. We were friends both on lab and off when in 1982 I started working in building 111. Here Susan was already a writer and I was now a new librarian.  In building 111 we worked close by for 30+ years and we'd run into one another in the hall or pop into each other's cubicles sharing experiences or making plans. We frequently shared lunch or dinner and when we talked, she expressed her warmth for others and her insights from the deeply personal to the universal human experience. Knowing Susan helped me reflect and opened my world to my community, my family, my friends and myself -- I am eternally grateful and thankful for our friendship.
I feel deeply sad for Roberto, her loving husband and friend ... also, her family and her hundreds of friends. Susan I miss you and I'll love you always.

I haven't been lucky enough to have known Susan as long as many of you, but at least I was lucky enough to have known good people like Judith and Richard Andersen who introduced me to Susan. She was so intelligent, so much fun to talk to, so supportive and appreciative of my own interests, and such a lovely compassionate and kind person, just the sort of friend you desperately need not to lose. Our lives are all much diminished by her passing and I will miss our chats on Facebook and in person terribly. My heart goes out to you, Roiberto, and her family, both biological and extended.

Roberto, my heart is heavy for you. I regret that I was unable to meet your beautiful wife Susan. After reading the comments, she truly sounds like the saint you said she was and inspired the best from people. An exemplary life is priceless and especially in these difficult times, a beautiful light in a sometimes dark world. I can only hope that in these difficult days (of 'grief coma') you find comfort and strength in the blessings you have received and know that your love endures. It is not hard to see that her light continues....

Susan and Roberto have been our neighbors and friends for the past three years. When we moved to the house across the street, Susan was the first person to welcome us to the neighborhood. There are so many kindnesses - both large and small - that she has done for us. I think she has been a big part of making our new house feel like a home. Susan was always happy to invite us, and our young son into her home, nearly anytime of day, to sit and talk and laugh. It is difficult to express how much that meant to us. She will be dearly missed.

I knew Susan because my sister, Cindy worked at JPL in the library. I got involved in the fundraiser for the Child Education Center. Got to know her husband, Roberto too.
Last time I saw them both was at a restaurant in Pasadena.
Dear, Roberto, very sad your sweetheart has left.
Love, Louise Bartnicki and Cindy Palmer

Susan was a kind soul and I am very sad to hear about her passing.

She was essentially my "work mom" when I started at JPL, as she looked after me when I started in her section back in 2002. She protected me from overbearing management-types, directed me to resources, and was there with hugs as needed. I used to really enjoy visiting with her for all the aforementioned reasons, but also, so that I could make her laugh.

Susan validated my belief that how you treat people at work is more important that the work itself. A value I maintain as a leader now.

She was brave and caring. Knowledgeable and charming. She stood up for others. She was everything you could ask for in a human being and I feel very fortunate to have spend the years I did with her at JPL.

Susan was a gem.

My condolences to all those who knew her, her family, and of course, Roberto.

The world is a sad place without this most amazing, caring, loving, giving, intellectual, beautiful Susan in it. And it was always “Susan and Roberto”. My heart aches for Robert’s loss.

For those that don’t know when I got evicted from my restaurant in Pasadena, Susan was by my side writing the responses for arbitration court. Susan was by side throughout the process . She was the female Clarence Darrow. This loss is so sad

I was so saddened and so very sorry to hear this news from Roberto. Though Susan and I hadn’t been in touch recently - the last time was at Ellie Trevarthen’s Memorial Service - I have so many memories from the time we first met through the JPL Hiking Club (in the late 1970’s), our days working at the Lab, working on and participating in HSPD-12 protests, and sharing our stories and laughter together. I could go on and on, listing her many attributes, but the heart-felt comments on this site have already described the beautiful soul that was Susan. Rest In Peace, dear friend. We will all miss you more than words can say. Roberto, know my heart goes out to you at this painful time. May the beautiful life you shared with Susan sustain and comfort you.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Susan and Roberto since moving to Pasadena in 2000. My first next door neighbors. Susan was always the example of kindness, love and honesty. I knew I would always get the history and alternate opinions on just about any given subject, with her view always leaning toward compassion. I hope I can continue to see things that way, with compassion first.
She will be so deeply missed. My heart goes out to you Roberto.
