I was really nervous to meet your Dad for the first time. I knew him mostly through stories your Mom would tell of when they first started dating and then throughout their relationship - how caring and incredibly thoughtful he was. I will never forget the story of how your Dad put together a card for each day he was away on a study trip in Europe. I remember your Mom showing me the box of all of the cards he had written - ones she had already opened and ones that were still sealed, yet to be opened. I remember thinking, 'gosh, she's lucky!'

So, I was nervous reaching out to your Dad for advice on what career move I should make. My sister, Rebecca, suggested I reach out to him to get his advice and he quickly responded with an 'absolutely!' That was your Dad. He was giving of his time, his advice, but always with such humility and grace.

I've known your Mom for a long time as a colleague and as a friend. She's incredibly strong, quick-witted, thoughtful, smart, wise, and so much more. But most of all, she loves her boys. I know you'll take care of her as she'll take care of you. And your Dad will always be in your hearts guiding you and setting out paths for you to help you navigate your lives with the same grace, humility and thoughtfulness.

Always in my prayers and thoughts,

Mary Power

Your wonderful Dad was just that!
Easygoing and genuine, quick with a smile and a joke and so ready to help with no matter what - I especially appreciated all of his incredible knowledge about growing anything and everything! And I could never get over how many projects he tackled himself! You boys both have his handy-ness.

He always showed such a sincere care for everyone he met - most especially those he knew well. Interested in what was happening in their lives, connecting, sharing, chatting - I see lots of that in you, Sam and Parker.

He was so incredibly modest and humble about his many accomplishments, especially in anything sport-related. But he was good at EVERYTHING! And both of you boys have those talents from your Mum and your Dad!

I love how much he loved your Mum...he was and is simply amazed by her. And because they are so different and knew each other so well, they could really get each other going - it always brought me a smile and a giggle :) I have such warm and happy memories of your Mum and Dad hosting fun parties full of friends and laughs - with your Dad always as a pro and caring host with the most. At their apartment on Morris Street, New Year’s, in your backyard, birthdays, Easter - whenever there was a chance to get together.

And most of all, I could always, always, always, see and feel how much and how deeply he loves you both. You are his world. You make him proud. He saw and sees how funny, smart, kind, joyful and talented you both are. I could see it the days you were born and I can feel it now. My wish from deep in my heart is that you both feel, see and live his love in all of the ways this world can show you.

With all my love,
Becca

I am grateful for the "cousins" gatherings we had in Halifax. I remember Julie & Ryan coming over to our place on Quinn Street, pre-kids and we had an amazing evening. We all had an appreciation for good/local food and wine :)

One dinner that stands out is when Ryan & Julie had us at their place. Ryan had planned a Mushroom Risotto for dinner. He bought these amazing mushrooms from the farmer's market. Little did he know his picky-eater-cousin Stephen doesn't eat mushrooms! When Stephen told this to Ryan when we arrived at their house, you could see for a split second the wheels turn in Ryan's head. But he easily accommodated and adapted and simply altered his plan. He cooked the mushrooms on the side. We watched him prepare this beautiful meal for us.

I am forever touched by Ryan's kindness, smile and his love for Julie and his sons.

When I think of Ryan, like most others, I think of his smile, his charm, thoughtfulness, kindness, and goofiness. I’ve know Ryan for over 20 years and he was a dear friend who always provided a listening ear, support, fun times and friendship. He was good at friendship - he cherished all his friends.

Some of my fondest memories over the years are hanging out in university, working at Grandpa’s Antique Photo Studio together, our adventures in Australia, visiting him in Toronto, visits from him and Julie on PEI and just the simple texts to check in on one other. A tender memory of Ryan is a few days after Sam was born, our family was in Halifax and I asked if we could drop a little sleeper off to the hospital. Visitors weren’t allowed as Sam came early and was tiny. I can still see Ryan in my mind coming out of the hospital doors beaming from ear to ear and then with a big hug telling me how amazing Sam was and how proud he was of Julie. He was on cloud nine. Pure joy! And then to have Parker too, he didn’t take his blessings for granted. He was a great dad.

To Mike, Donalda, Damian and family - I send you my most heartfelt condolences. I can’t imagine how hard this must be. Ryan loved you dearly and would do anything to protect you.

To Sam and Parker - You’ll know from those around you, the memories and pictures, that your dad loved you to pieces. It seems from this memorial page and the stories about your dad that he has left you a beautiful instructional manual, a template of sorts, on how to live your lives. It’s something for us all to emulate.

To Julie - Ryan was choosy. He had a high standard for sure and that says so much about you. You were the gem he was looking for and the love you gave him made him so happy. I’m so sorry for what you are having to endure.

“Grief is the last act of love we have to give to those we loved. Where there is deep grief, there was great love.”

Ryan - Thank you for the love and for being so lovable.

I had the joy of working with Ryan at Dalhousie. Ryan’s professionalism, positivity, and kindness absolutely radiated. It was a privilege to know him and work with him. When I first started as a manager, he was generous and shared his time and experience with me patiently and humorously. The little stories that would slip out about Julie, Sam, and Parker in meetings and in hallways were such a powerful and present demonstration of how much Ryan loved his family. One of my favourite memories of working with Ryan happened during the pandemic. As Ryan and I were meeting, my husband handed me our toddler, clad only in a diaper, and barrelled off to work emergency. I was mortified - Ryan was always so professional and so collected in meetings. I apologized for the interruption and for the lack of attire on my son. Ryan didn’t say a word, but grinned at me and disappeared for a moment as he leaned under his table, re-emerging with a similarly (un)clad Parker, who had been playing the whole time quietly at his feet. We both roared with laughter and commiserated for a few minutes about the joys and challenges of working from home with toddlers. Ryan’s good humour and obvious love for his family so very much encouraged me that day.

I am so very sorry for your loss, and will be keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers in the months to come.

I met Ryan at Damian and Emma's wedding. Luckily it was a multi-day getaway so I got some time to know him more then your average wedding. It really hit me how much Ryan and Damian were similar. And how they had a special bond. Their smiles, their banter, their love. But boy was Ryan a gentlemen. I immediately felt warm and welcomed when I met Ryan. I could see right away this 'good person' that everyone described. Just before this tragic accident, we were sharing a story that comes up all too often. How on the wedding night Ryan was partying late night. Apparently this wasn't so normal for him. And as the bride and groom went to bed, and lay there, on their wedding night, the groom turned to his bride and said, " I can't believe my brother is still partying." And the bride turned to the groom and said "Do you want to go back out there and party with Ryan?" and the groom said "yes.". So Damian got out of his bed, on his wedding night, to go make memories with Ryan. Who would have known how important that memory was. What a great memory to have that highlights the bond between these 2. (And such an understanding wife).

To Damian, Emma, Julie, Parker, Sam, Mike, Donalda and all friends and family - I hope you find peace in his memories, his amazing profile and seeing some of him and his teachings in all of you.

Rest in Peace, Ryan.

To the wife, children, and family of Ryan, please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of this wonderful man. I had the honor and privilege of working with Ryan for a little more than 2 years in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. During that time, both in meetings and in casual conversations, Ryan frequently shared with us how proud a father he was and how much love he had for his wife and family. During the last year, in one of the most challenging times I have encountered in my professional career brought on by the pandemic, Ryan led and supported our organization so that we were able to transition seamlessly to remote assessment. Ryan did this with all the grace, wisdom, and poise of a true leader. Ryan we will miss you.

Reading the beautiful and heartfelt tribute to Ryan, and then reading the many, many messages of condolence, it is obvious that Ryan was a special person... a man of integrity, accomplishment and genuine kindness. We first met Ryan when Lindsay invited him to join us for Sunday dinner while they were doing their MBA together. We were impressed with his kindness and charm relating to us all, including the over-80 family members. “Good Island Boy” we thought immediately, and that high esteem continued whenever our paths crossed over the years. To all of Ryan’s family, and especially to his beloved Julie, Sam and Parker, we send our deepest sympathies.

For the past 5 years, I have worked side by side with Ryan as co-directors of MedIT at Dalhousie, and the past two weeks without him have been crushing.

He exemplified everything that you would want to be as a person. He was just as genuine, honest, and caring as he was fun and goofy, and there was never a moment that he didn't spend trying to do the right thing, in the right way.

The outpouring of love and support that I have received from the Dalhousie community since Ryan’s passing has been amazing and overwhelming, and a true testament to the impact he has had on those around him. A common theme is that meetings with Ryan where often the best part of projects – for some of us, they were the best part of every single workday. The loss is devastating, but I am also so grateful for the time we had together. Not everyone gets to be lucky enough to know such a wonderful man.

We played soccer with Ryan and Julie a few years ago. Ryan was very even-keeled; as a person, an athlete and a teammate. He was easy to chat with on the sideline
s and always had encouraging words for others.

In recent years I would frequently see Ryan on my drive to work in the mornings (usually around the intersection of Quinpool and Oxford). He would be pushing a stroller and I often noticed how relaxed and happy he looked as he made his way towards the South End.

We were saddened to hear the news and are so very sorry for your loss Julie and family.

As I reflect on my relationship with Ryan now, he was like a mentor to me growing up. We played soccer and tennis together, Ryan older by one year. But Ryan was always so much older than me, mature beyond his years, but not in a pretentious way, in a way that simply said he always knew where he wanted to go, and stayed true to the person he was as he worked hard to get there. There are mentors that set out to shape people, but that was not Ryan. He always lead by example, inspiring those lucky enough to be close to him to be better and kinder humans.

We played tennis tournaments against one another, and in the weeks between those tournaments we trained side by side, or across from one another, under the same coaches, with the same aim of being the best tennis player. I remember, vaguely, matches where Ryan would outsmart me, staying committed to his game plan, staying calm when challenged. I remember talking to myself at the back of the court, giving my hand away, while Ryan, so stoic on the court, kept his emotions inside. I remember losing to him, and then asking for a drive home in his red Civic hatchback. I remember how those matches just fell away, and we would go back to being friends, the edge of competition dulled. I remember emulating how he hit the ball, his clean forehand, his low angled backhand, but more importantly, how he handled himself on and off the court. He was an easy mentor in that his recipe for success in tennis and life was simple: “work hard and be kind to people.”

I lost touch with Ryan as we moved to separate provinces after high school, but we did talk on occasion, and we did manage to play tennis together two years ago. Damian was there, the day was bright and warm, and I remember a profound feeling of calm came over me when I hit with them. It was like we were kids again, searching, and finding, ourselves in a game we loved. I got to see how and he and Damian grew together over the years, and was envious of that close bond they clearly shared.

I will always see Ryan as I did that day: effortlessly kind, encouraging, greeting his son with a huge smile when he came running down to the court to watch his dad play tennis.

Ryan and I worked together at the medical school. I always felt very lucky to have the opportunity to spend time with him — whether in the office or on the bus ride home.

Like everyone else, when I think of Ryan, I remember his boyish smile. I, too, remember his sweet stories about Sam (Parker wasn’t yet born). But most of all, I remember how he treated people; he was always so kind and respectful of others.

It’s been a few years since I last saw Ryan. But when I learned of his tragic ski accident, the news hit hard. When I reflected on my memories of Ryan, I felt the immense loss.

My condolences to Ryan’s family — especially to his little boys, his pride and joy.

To Ryan's family - I had the true pleasure of working with Ryan in his role with MedIT on a few projects that he and his group were leading and looking for input on from Dept Heads. I really appreciated Ryan's interest in figuring out what would work best for our needs, the way he explained things, and how he radiated a real sense of joy in what he was doing and life in general. When we would cross paths in the hallways, Ryan was always quick to ask how things were going and was very happy to suggest places to visit when I was heading to PEI for a work-related trip and taking a few extra days to explore. Ryan and I also had a good laugh sharing experiences about driving on the "wrong" side of the road in other countries with a stickshift trying to manage narrow, winding spaces and parking garages without stalling!

His joy on the birth of his two sons with Julie was also very evident. Even through the bleary-eyed days of not much sleep and when the children were sick, his love of all of you came through. Although Ryan almost always seemed to be smiling, his smile definitely became a bit bigger when he spoke about you.

I, like many others, will very much miss Ryan. My deepest sympathies to you, his family and friends.

I met Ryan in MBA School. We also traveled to France & Denmark together.

I remember we were driving in our rental car down the coast of France. I kept choosing a radio station and then it would get all fuzzy. I kept trying to fix it and it kept changing. I couldn’t figure out what was going on and I was getting frustrated.

Then, I look over at Ryan and he has his unmistakeable mischievous grin because he can’t hold it in any longer. I didn’t know that he had control of the radio on the steering wheel which he was expertly shifting as he was driving along.

We both had a good laugh.

My memories of Ryan are of the kind, fun, smart and full-of-life person that he was.

I also remember when Ryan started dating Julie. He was smitten from the start.

To Julie, the boys and all of Ryan’s family and close friends, my heart goes out to you. I hope that your memories of him help to heal the pain of this tragic loss.

Ryan was a wonderful light in the world and loved you all fiercely.

Hugs,
Jennifer

What can you say about somebody who had it all and left the world far too soon? It is hard to put into words something that would be meaningful to his close family, friends and loved ones. At such a devastating time, words can sometimes seem empty.

I've known Ryan since about 2014 at the Faculty of Medicine, and what resonates and stirs my soul when I think about him is not so much the memories of work, but of the chats we would have before, after, or at another time. Chats about family, PEI, life and the future. My wife and many wonderful friends are from "the Garden of the Gulf", and I think I always had a soft spot for Ryan because of that. We would talk about his kids and family, home projects, and when the next time would be that we might get to "the Island" for some down time.

He was personable, humble, friendly, and always up for a laugh or joke. And oh, yeah, he always managed to keep our IT projects on track, no matter what I threw at him.

It took me a week and a half to figure out what I wanted to say about Ryan that might make a difference. At the end of the day, it is Ryan's life, the way he lead it and the joy he brought to others that make the real difference. My deepest condolences to Ryan's immediate family and friends at this time of loss and reflection.

Rest in peace, my friend.

Kenny Rogers once said about Dolly Parton something akin to "I used to think Dolly and I performed in a very unique way. Our voices blended together to make gorgeous harmonies I can't make with anyone else. I thought we both brought special skills to make a perfect sound...but then she did more and more duets with other people and I thought, 'Gosh, I had nothing to do with it! She makes those harmonies with everyone. It was all her!" I thought of this when reading the initial tributes that came through for Ryan.

Ryan was my manager at Dal, and we also worked together on a lot of projects we were both proud of. Based on my experience with him, I thought, "Boy do we make a great team. We produce really great work together and we seem to appreciate each other a great deal." However, now I realise how much of that was Ryan's doing, and how I was not unique in that experience of him. He pulled out the best in people...the best efforts they could do, the best perspectives they could have of a situation or a person, the best attitudes. When negativity would cloud a situation or interaction with others, he helped you find the humanity and the humour in it. It was not often he was frustrated, but it was always measured and a trigger for finding a solution.

His support of our family through an extremely flexible working schedule and other measures will have positive impacts for a lifetime on my kids. Our chats about our parenting skills and kiddos were helpful and oftentimes timely to each other's needs. The five minutes before a meeting that I would be in with Ryan were some of my favorite minutes of the day. He was so curious about the people around him and when you would talk, he was truly listening (and would remember). And so very funny...I was always laughing at the start of an interaction with him and enjoyed when I would make him laugh.

He was such a engaging and protective force, I would sometimes dread the thought of Ryan moving on to other pastures in the working world, which I expected he would at some point. The extent of Ryan's positive impact on people over the course of his short life would not be possible for most of us to recreate even with many lifetimes. He will be sorely missed. Much love and hope to Julie, Sam, Parker, and other relations.

P.S. If Ryan was here, he would respond to my post with, "I see all roads lead to Dolly Parton again, Kevin," as he was wont to say (I found a way to reference Dolly Parton in many a situation, a skill that he found humorous).

Ryan was my co-worker, supervisor and friend at Dal (MedIT). He always went above and beyond to make me feel that I was valued professionally and personally. We talked about being fathers and husbands and venting our frustration over not being able to keep up with younger competition in our respective sports. He loved his family and spoke of you often. Ryan also encouraged me when I sought growth at Dal and cheered me on when I found success outside of Dal. I can only hope to one day be half as caring and empathetic as a leader. I was lucky to have him as a colleague and friend. I'm sorry for your loss.

I met Ryan in 2014 when he joined MedIT, Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University. I had the privilege of knowing Ryan as my boss and friend. His pleasant disposition earned him respect as a leader, supporter, and friend. Ryan was always the first person to help as he truly cared about people.
Ryan was one of the very few people who could grow plants in the basement of the Sir Charles Tupper Medical Building. Believe me, I tried and it is a challenge to do so.
I will always remember the baby stroller in the corner of his office (after he dropped off Sam or Parker at the Dal Daycare).
Ryan instilled a ray of sunshine in each of us. He will be truly missed. My heartfelt condolences to Julie, Sam, Parker, Mike, Donelda, and Damien.

I first met Ryan in 2013 while he was working in the Project Management Office at Dal. I was assigned to an HR initiative he was working on and it was my first time being seconded to a big project. Ryan was one of the most organized people I had ever met – he had such great attention to detail, kept perfect notes on absolutely everything, and was an expert at navigating the (many!) complicated aspects of the project. But what I remember most was that Ryan always listened to my input and made sure my voice was heard, even though I was the most junior employee on the project by far. He was such a kind soul. My deepest condolences to his family – he will be so greatly missed.

So, there was this one time… a group of us went to a small, basement club in downtown Toronto. Hard to remember exactly who we were with, or what the name of the club was. For anyone who can remember, it was a cozy basement bar around the Church and Esplanade area, I think. It was a cool spot to go have a few drinks and maybe joke around on the dance floor on a Friday night. Just off the side of the dance floor, there were a couple of steps which led up to a stone cellar, where they kept the nice bottles of liquor and wine. This one night, I believe it was a large bottle of Crown Royal that was on display in the cellar. There was a stand in the middle of the cellar with a spotlight shining on that big bottle of rye – so it looked pretty enticing from the dark dance floor. We had a group of about 5-10 guys and gals on the dance floor, dancing and joking around, so for a laugh Ryan decides he’s going to pretend to grab that big bottle of rye from the cellar. Ryan playfully dashes off and bounds up the two steps to the cellar. What Ryan didn’t realize… was that there was a ½ inch thick glass door to the cellar… Ryan was stopped cold. Like a cartoon character. He smacked into that glass door and there was a loud “GOOONG” that could be heard over the dance music. Then, he slowly fell, back first, from the top of the two little steps, square onto the dance floor, where we were watching this sequence of events unfold. There was a pause from everyone… And then, as he shook it off and we knew he was sort of okay… we lost it laughing. Including him, of course. We laughed so hard that we were rolling on that filthy dance floor. Good times. Love you man.

One of my favorite photos of Ryan. Photo taken during 2000-2001 trip to Australia, during a snorkeling trip. That's a watermelon Viking helmet he's wearing along with the goggles. Both were critical pieces of gear for the post snorkel drinking game of catch-the-thrown-pieces-of-watermelon. Which Ryan won, of course.

When I think of Ryan I instantly think of his love of Halloween and his many costumes. Hands down his best was when he dressed as tennis pro Roger Federer...a cheeky placed tennis racket with a ball on either side. He sent me a photo and I can’t find it for the life of me. Awkward maneuvering? Probably. Worth it? Definitely yes. I can picture it in my mind and it still makes me smile.

My first memory of Ryan is from July, 1985 when we moved into the Teahill neighbourhood. The moving van had just arrived and we were busy unpacking when three 8 year old boys came zooming down our street on their bicycles looking for our 8 year old. One of those boys was the sweetest guy with a huge smile and a mass of blond curls....Ryan. Those four boys spent countless hours in the woods of Teahill, building forts, playing "Kick the Can" at dusk and well into the night, on rainy days- games of Monopoly, that went on for days or even weeks. What a great bunch of boys they were! And then they were grown and gone from Teahill, raising families of their own and we watched as Ryan found his soul mate in Julie and they became loving, dedicated parents to Sam and Parker.
We were all left in disbelief when we heard of Ryan's tragic accident. Such a devastating loss for Julie and their precious boys, for his wonderful parents, Mike and Donalda, and all his many friends and colleagues. Our deepest sympathies to all of you as you try to find the strength to pick up the pieces of your heart.

I am very very sorry for your loss. I had only just gotten to know Ryan, but absolutely loved his enthusiasm for our shared work in the Faculty of Medicine. And now am terribly sorry that I don't have any photos of the belly dance fundraiser for women's shelters that Ryan organized his whole team to participate in two years ago - I would have loved to share those with you. You'll have to use your imagination and imagine Ryan jingling away. :-) We share a connection to PEI and UPEI and I suspect knew some of the same folks - I had looked forward to exploring that with him at some point.

I wish you all whatever peace you might receive from the words of warmth your Ryan engenders. He will be missed.

I had the wonderful privilege of getting to know Ryan everyday as he brought his 2 wonderful boys into the daycare. He was such a kind and patient man who was never in a rush and would always stop to talk. We would talk about our kids and the funny things they would do, and yes even the not so great moments of parenting. Just a few days before Ryan passed he saw me in line dropping off my son who was having the biggest temper tantrum and he looked at me and smiled and said " Just one of those days ha, we have all had them". I smiled and said "yes it is" and we both laughed. I will miss seeing him in line and picking up Parker and having those nice conversations as parents not just as his children's educator. He will truly be missed but he will live on in those precious boys and the memories he has made.

Ryan
In the 1980’s and 1990’s, Tea Hill was the place to grow up in. It was a near-perfect world made up of unique (sometimes strange) kids, parents and grandparents. It only encompassed a few streets but it felt like a village. In a very real way, all the kids belonged to all the families and each kid’s peculiarities enriched all families not just his/her own. Our memories of Ryan are not so much about particular events or things he did, but rather about his character and the person he was and how these things were important to making the Tea Hill family a happy one. We are certain these memories will also be shared by all who knew him.

Ryan was one of the older kids in Tea Hill. As was his way, he took on the role of the caring big brother to all the younger kids. He did this with genuine kindness, gentleness and that ever-present and unforgettable smile. Now it’s hard to say if this natural inclination was always extended to his little brother, Damian, because that boy was one wild and crazy lad (eh,Day).

As for his interactions with the older cats in the neighborhood, Ryan was always respectful and polite, although as he got older he would jokingly formally address Rob as “Mr. McConnell” and then flash that Ryan smile. It seemed to us that that Ryan smile underscored a subtle understanding Ryan had acquired that the world could do with more genuinely smiling people, so what the heck. That smile will be sorely missed.

The Tea Hill family of yesteryears has said au revoir to several family members since then and now to Ryan. Yet the life of the family that was and the people that were all an integral part of it, have not been, and will not be forgotten, rest assured Ryan, because, as Tom Waits would say “ain’t no good thing ever dies”. And so it will be.

Ryan had a way of making you feel important and valued. He truly took an interest in others lives no matter how brief the encounter may have been. His smile was contagious. Julie my heart aches for you and your boys and everyone who will feel his loss daily. My family sends all the love to you and your sweet boys. Ryan & I met during our summers working at Grandpa’s Antique Photography Studio together back in the late 90s & early 2000s.

His presence both at work & beyond was always light, cheerful, kind, fun-loving & sincere. No matter what environment he was in, he always could create a fun atmosphere & every single person to have ever known him must have felt that to their core.

It was with shock & sadness that I learned of Ryan’s passing last weekend. Words travels quickly (all the way to Saskatchewan) when the world loses one of its best humans. And he truly was just that.

My love, condolences & healing extend to all of Ryan’s family & friends, as we all try to make sense of & navigate what seems like such an unfair & tragic end to a life that brought such beauty & joy to so many.

I really got to know Ryan best when he and Julie joined our ALS fundraiser team when we cycled the Cabot Trail back in 2013. We would often collect for our weekend training rides at Ryan and Julie’s place in Fairview. Many on the team were new to cycling that year and Ryan was always patient and helpful for those tackling road cycling for the first time. We would often have a coffee at Pavia afterwards as a reward for those early-on tough training rides.

On the Cabot Trail ride itself, we all knew Ryan could have been one of the cyclists challenging to be first up the mountains on the climbs, but each day he stayed with the main group. His support helped others to keep going and provided encouragement for all of those never expecting they would have taken on such a challenge. He was so proud of everyone’s accomplishment at the end of the three days. It was an adventure he and Julie were able to share and I know Ryan was especially proud of Julie’s accomplishment that weekend.

Julie and Ryan would visit Liz and I at our cottage over the years for bike rides followed by Happy Hours on the dock. Our last ride was on the trails in Mahone Bay a few years back and Ryan and I rode together for a while, talking tennis, his job at Dal and the new things that Sam was doing at the time.

My memories of us all laughing at something and having a nice post-ride beer on the sunny dock in Herman’s Island is how I will remember Ryan. He was such a great Dad to the boys and a wonderful partner for Julie and a friend to so many. We will all miss Ryan so much.

Julie, my heart goes out to you, Sam, and Parker. It is hard to believe that Ryan is gone. We only met Ryan when you moved onto Kline Street, but Ryan quickly became a fixture. He was always running around the yard with the boys, building snow forts with Sam, chasing Parker down the street and into other peoples' backyards, chatting with everyone who passed by. His dedication to those two little guys put the rest of us dads to shame. We chatted a lot on the drive up to Wentworth on that terrible day, sometimes about work, but conversation always came back to the family (swim lessons, daycare, school, and what you all might do this summer for a family vacation, Covid willing). Whenever he talked about Sam and Parker, there was a little twinkle in his eye and that boyish grin on his face. Through them, he seemed to be reliving the best part of being a kid, everyday. I am sure that is why he went on so many walks around the block with the boys, built so many snowmen, and kicked so many soccer balls. That, and he always seemed to want to take care of people. I will also miss spending time with Ryan, and, oddly, the pandemic gave those of us on Kline Street a chance to see and interact with Ryan more frequently, to get to know him better than before.

I have been reading all of these beautiful tributes to Ryan that speak of his character, his smile and what his friendship has meant to so many people. I have been trying to come up with the “right” words to say for days, and I’ve realized there just aren’t any..
We were shocked to hear about Ryan; he is my brothers best friend, the son of my parents dear friends, and his brother is also best friends with my other brother. This is a family I’ve known my entire life. Thinking about saying “The Clows” with Ryan gone is hard to imagine.
Over the years we’ve got to know Julie more, but it wasn’t until this summer, while we were at Scott’s visiting, that we really got to spend some quality time with them. It was easy. They were easy to talk to, kind, warm and inviting. Our children got alone great; especially Samuel and our son.
It was a fun day, and now one we will cherish.
Ryan meant so much to my brother Scott, and I’m so glad they were able to spend a lot more time together these last few months. Their families got to know each other better, and became great friends; they were creating what we’ve always known between our families, with their own.
Ryan was blessed with really great friends & family, and I’m sure he would be so proud to see how they’re all stepping in to help Julie & the kids.

To say we’re sorry doesn’t seem like enough.. sending our love & strength to Julie, Samuel, Parker, Mike, Donelda, Damien, Scott, Sarah, Kent, Jessie, Robin, Darcy and so many others.

He was the number 1 rated player in all of PEI. He was such a great soul. Funny, smart, kind, and athletic. He had it all. He will be missed dearly. My sincere, heart felt condolences to his family.

I had the pleasure of growing up with Ryan, spending many winters and summers in PEI playing tennis together. I must have been 8 when I met him. He was either sharing the court with me or one of us was patiently watching the other, from the sidelines, waiting to go on. He was four years my senior but always treated me and the rest of the younger tennis kids like equals, including the girls. That’s striking to me now – the maturity and respect he had even then. He never engaged in sexist talk or made cheap shots, even if it was, sometimes, part of the ‘sport culture’ at the time. He held people to account and made kindness cool. He wasn’t sanctimonious. He just called it as it was. You felt safe around him, the way you do a big brother or a coach. And he was like a second coach to us – looking out for you during your games, giving you encouragement when you needed it, listening to you when you later decide you hate competitive tennis and never want to play again. I wish I had the photos I used to have of Ryan – grinning his signature grin – on those tennis trips we took, but they vanished during a move.

We lost touch after I quit the sport and left PEI but by some strange and wonderful circumstance, 20 years later he became my husband’s boss at MedIT, which I think we both found hilarious. And he was exactly as I remembered him – forever sporty and kind. I say he was a boss (and technically he was - and an incredibly good one by all accounts) but he was so much more to Jordan. He was a friend with whom to exchange all the daily ups and downs and joys and struggles of parenting with. With our kids being the same age, they never tired of telling each other the latest debacle or proud dad moment and how it’s all going by too fast. It pains us both that we never did get around to hanging out, outside of work, with the kids like we said we should and that I turned down his gentle nudge to get back on the court. I just took for granted that we had time.

Julie, Sam and Parker: I hope you know how much you are in our hearts and the hearts of so many. There isn’t an hour that goes by that you aren’t in our thoughts. I can only begin to imagine how utterly devastating this loss is for you. So completely incomprehensible and shocking and unfair. I know it is Ryan that we knew, but it is you that he loved and in his stories about you, you too feel close. If there is anything we can do, even if it is just to share a laugh and a memory, we are only a few blocks away and our door is open for you anytime. And to Damian, Donalda and Mike – my deepest, deepest condolences. You raised the finest man who really did leave an imprint on everyone he knew. I know Damian too shares so many of Ryan’s best qualities, so it’s a testament to you and the amazing foundation that you laid.

I know there is no silver lining in any of this, but I want you to know that in the hours after learning of Ryan’s death, I was walking with my girls and their godmamas through the backwoods of Purcell’s Pond, feeling incredibly raw and sad, when suddenly, there next to a log in the bushes by the path was a bright, yellow, tennis ball. It caught my breath and stopped me in my tracks. I couldn’t help but take it as a sign from Ryan. Like he was pulling a bag of tricks from the great beyond and having a little chuckle as he did. It has been over 20 years since I picked up a racket and that is going to change this summer Ryan, I promise. Maybe sometime Julie, Sam and Parker we can have a game.

So much love, Kyla

Oh my dear friend... where do I begin? I don’t recall the exact confluence of events that brought you into my life but I know my life has been so much richer for having had you as my friend. Your unconditional love and support over these years has meant so much and the void your absence has created is so vast. I will try to live my life with at least a small portion of your grace and beauty of spirit. I will always be there for Julie, Sam and Parker and I will remind your sons how much I admired their father and just how much he meant to me. You were golden my friend and you will be missed terribly. Love you Ryan.

Julie, Sam and Parker we are heart broken for you. We did not know Ryan well - only to see him each morning and afternoon during UCC pickups and drop-offs and of course on those sunny afternoons at the Waeg. Sam and Parker we saw the happiness in your dad's eyes when he spotted you in the window at the end of each day. Boys, your father obviously loved you more than anything - we didn't need to know him well to know that for certain.

I worked down the hall from Ryan for the past six years at Dalhousie. Genuine, kind, and intelligent are the words that spring to mind when I think of him. He could always be found checking in on all members of our department. I always looked forward to our chats and hearing about his adventures with his boys. The door was always open to his office and I would often pop by to say hello and check in on the progress of his small plant. I don’t recall where this plant came from, but it was very weak and didn’t seem like it was going to survive. Miraculously, Ryan nursed it back to health. Over the years there were times when it would lose all it leaves and seemed on the brink of collapse, but when I’d check in a few weeks later it was sprouting a new leaf. I share this story because I think it speaks to Ryan’s character, the person he was and the type of leader he was to our department. He will be sorely missed by his colleagues.

My deepest condolences to Julie, Parker and Sam.

Ryan and I worked together at Dal. We would often talk and laugh about what our kids were up to. He was a great morale booster. Ryan would often bring freezies to us on hot afternoons, and was always laughing but very encouraging of our plank-off challenges. A memory that comes to mind is of us walking together after work one day. I parked near the Wag, and he was going there to play tennis. We talked about family, mindfulness, and PEI. I remember thinking how lucky I was to have Ryan for a boss and a friend. He was the best kind of person. My sincere condolences to his wife, children, family and friends.

My Dad likes to say: “people are what they do when no one is watching” and I can’t imagine anyone who embodied this expression more than Clow. Ryan was the constant in our friends group and a steady, positive presence in so many lives. Kind, witty, charismatic and dependable, Ryan was often the first person to offer help to one of us when needed. I’m blessed to have known him for 20+ years with our lives intersecting at three significant times; at UPEI, living in Toronto and finally here in Halifax. When “no one” was watching, Ryan was the type of person who waited outside for 48 hours in winter, no, not for concert tickets, but for the chance to get Sam on an important school zoning list. His dedication as a husband and father was so consistent to who he was at the core of his being. Ryan was gentle with an endless capacity to listen, especially to those closest to him. I never picked up on a kernel of impatience when sharing seemingly ridiculous details or frustrations with him. He would listen intently and focus on you with his sparkling eyes. Ryan’s ability to listen and to observe, often put him in the ideal position for a pitch-perfect one liner! He could drop a perfectly timed burn or two and take one as well, sharing his amazing smile and laugh.

When I see Sam’s curls and hear Parker’s contagious giggle, I know that so many amazing aspects of Ryan will live on through his boys. Fortunately, Ryan wasn’t intimidated by strong, beautiful women and so... he married one. While I will never understand why Julie and the boys were robbed of Ryan so soon, I will say that they’re stuck with us, or as Sam said “the potato people are here again”. Julie, you always were, but now especially so. To Ryan’s parents and Damian, my most sincere condolences to you. This is a tremendous loss that will have ripple effects in so many lives and in the community for years to come. Ryan, I wish there’d been time for one last bear hug. You were a great “hugger” because you did everything fully and completely. Xo

I met Ryan sometime in the mid 90's. Seems like forever ago. He was one of the nicest most genuine people that i have ever met. Never saw him angry once and always had that smile. Our crew had a lot of fun times back in the day, whether it be at cottage parties, hanging out at 604 Queen or whatever it was. As we entered 'adulthood', we didn't get to stay in touch as often over the years but whenever we did chat or see each other, it was as if it had only been a short time that we had last been in contact.

Ryan will be forever missed but his legacy will continue on.

I got to know Ryan in my early 20s. We had our troop of PEI people all living in Toronto. This is such terrible news, every interaction I ever had with Ryan he was just a solid and genuine guy. I honestly don’t recall him ever not having a smile on his face. He was 100 times better at tennis but would graciously play down to my level and offer encouragement. Always a classy guy. Wishing his family and all his friends condolences through this sad time.

I first got to know Ryan at UPEI through Darcy, Tim and the gang. A social and friendly guy, Ryan was a friend to many.

Group lunches and summer afternoons spent on the Stanley River continued until Ryan left the Island. A classic PEI news headline would often trigger a random exchange of emails or texts. He often connected on his return visits to catch up.

One of those visits was our first introduction to Julie. Before long, Ryan was testing out his parenting skills with their new pup, Libby. He was so proud of his boys. It was so evident from his stories, Julie’s photos and the stories from others here that he was an adoring and amazing father. Although Sam and Parker didn’t get enough time with their dad, Ryan will always be a special part of them.

It’s hard not to read through these tributes and memories without a tear in your eye, a lump in your throat and a smile on your face - much like his own signature smile.

Ryan touched the lives of so many. He was a true gentleman with all the best qualities. As the sadness eventually passes, memories of Ryan will continue to shine a little brighter each day.

Donalda, Mike and Julie, my heartfelt condolences to you and your families. Ryan left quite a mark and will be greatly missed.

I had the pleasure of working with Ryan for four years at FOM. We met often, most often with Ryan chairing the meetings as project manager. Whenever I could, I would arrive early so that Ryan and I could catch up, mostly the daily dramas of getting Sam up and out to the Dal childcare program. Whatever was going down that morning, it was so obvious that Ryan enjoyed every moment he spent with his boy - and no doubt with his second boy too, though Parker came along after I left Dal, so I missed all those stories.

I really enjoyed Ryan, for the qualities so much attested in these messages of condolence - his easy and ever present smile, his sense of humour, his caring concern for others, his calm balance, his sharp intelligence. My last interaction was outside his home, just a few days before this past Christmas. I was walking my dog down his street, and Ryan came bounding from his front door. I’d like to think he was as pleased to see me as I was seeing him, but it could be that he was there to intercept Santa Claus who was due to pull up in his car at any moment. We had a lovely chat, as we always did, full of laughter and good-natured stories of those we worked with at Dal. He was a sweet and generous man. I will truly miss Ryan.

To Julie, Sam, and Parker, my deepest sympathy. I cannot imagine your grief at losing Ryan. I hope time will ease the pain and leave you with gratitude for the time you had together.

I met Ryan the first few weeks of university at UPEI thanks to Tara and I can still see him loping through the breezeway and into the pit to meet everyone with his trademark smile. That smile!! Wow. We all spent so much time together in those days, hanging out in the pit, hanging out pretending to work in the group study rooms in the library, heading to the Barn as a giant group, always excited for the next good time.
Ryan’s effervescence and goodwill were his trademarks. When I spoke to him a couple weeks ago he displayed the same enthusiasm, and also love and pride when he spoke about Julie, Sam and Parker. I was looking forward to seeing them this summer on PEI.
Ryan always started with a smile and a kind word, he was always a gentleman in the truest sense, and I trusted and respected him always.
Our last big night out was a few years ago now, the night of the Sheepdogs show on Victoria Row. Darcy, Sarah,Ryan and a bunch of us headed down to Peakes for a beer and a walk down memory lane I guess. We had a lot of laughs as always. I remember that Sarah and I didn’t want the night to end, as usual, and we stayed so late we had a almost impossible task of finding a cab home! Ryan suggested we could ask the police for a ride like old times. Ha.
I am better for having known Ryan, we all are. It’s been an honour and a privilege calling him a dear friend and we’ll all work hard to keep his legacy alive for Sam and Parker.
To Ryan’s parents, Damien, and extended family - my most sincere condolences. Your Ryan was one of the best. We all loved him very much.
Julie - you know we will be here always.
Big hugs to everyone sharing the grief of this tremendous loss. Love, Jenny

I have many wonderful memories of my friendship with Ryan. We first met in the grade 1 French Immersion class at Glen Stewart Elementary School, and through those early years I had the pleasure of getting to know Ryan in both the classroom setting and through a couple of team sports and activities. However, it wasn’t until university in the UPEI Business Administration program and, in particular, as next door neighbours at 602/604 Queen Street in Charlottetown where I really had the opportunity to get to know Ryan and the man he would become. That was such a memorable time, with our tight-knit group of Maritime friends. We also had some fantastic times while we were both living in Toronto. Again, usually in the company of great Maritime friends. After Ryan had moved back to the East Coast, I was so pleased to see that he and Julie had found each other and the wonderful life that they built together.

My deepest condolences to Julie, Sam, Parker and all of Ryan’s family and friends. He was such a kind, intelligent, and thoughtful person who had a great deal of integrity. I am truly grateful to have known Ryan and will always cherish our friendship.

I have known Julie for the better part of 25 years, having met in high school and forming an everlasting friendship during our undergrad at SMU. We have been through countless adventures and misadventures, but most importantly I witnessed Julie’s biggest adventure - falling in love with her soulmate, Ryan.

Ryan, as people have mentioned, was an amazing person. Humble and kind with an infectious smile, but most of all an amazing husband and father. His love for Julie, Sam, and Parker was evident in everything he did.

Even though George and I moved away from Halifax in 2010, Ryan and Julie remained amazing friends from visiting us in Ottawa to ensuring that we got together each and every time we visited Halifax. Sitting around the kitchen island on Kline, going out for dinner, celebrating Greek Easter with my family, attending birthday parties, sharing pictures of our children, Ryan playing tennis with George each time we visited, the list goes on - but the one thing I will always remember is that each time we got together we had a lot of laughs and good conversation.

One of my favourite memories is when Ryan was engagement ring shopping for Julie. He had sent me a number of messages with TOP SECRET written more than once in full caps, making sure that I would not blab that this was happening (he knew that I am very excitable). I recently found these messages and finally read them to Julie - I think Ryan would be okay with this now :). We both agreed it was just like Ryan from making sure that I could keep a secret to ensuring he got the most perfect ring.

Julie, Sam, and Parker - nothing can take away the pain from losing your husband and father. But please take some comfort in knowing how much of an impact Ryan had on a lot of people’s lives, how much he was loved, and how much he loved the three of you.

May his memory be eternal.

I met Ryan at UPEI back in 1996 and probably haven’t seen him since the early 2000’s. That being said, I will always remember him as funny and kind. Almost every memory from university involves Ryan in some way. From hanging out at my parents house to spending time at cottages, there was so much laughter and fun. It’s hard to believe that he’s gone. My sister, Allison, and I were sharing memories and photos and this photo is was taken on a Sunday night after watching X-Files. I remember it because Ryan picked up this German cane that was leaning against the piano to use as a prop. Because why not? He was always looking to make us laugh. My heart is heavy for Ryan’s wife and boys, his parents and brother — I cannot imagine what they are going through as a mother, wife, and sister. And for his friends who were like brothers to him...”the boys”. My deepest, sincerest condolences.

I've known Ryan for most of my life, and we shared a number of mutual friends. My memories of Ryan are only positive; like so many on here have already made clear, he was a smart, funny, personable, and - most importantly - kind person. I've never known anyone who would have had anything negative to say about him, and I think that would be clear to anyone reading through these tributes, if they had never known him themselves.

I was lucky enough to run into him in Halifax a couple of years ago, and it was great to actually catch up, if only for a very short time. There's always people in life that you wish you could have known better, and Ryan will always be one of those people, for me. I have no doubt that the greatness of his character, and love he had for his friends and family, will be passed on to his children, and ultimately shape the people that they become. My sincere condolences to his family, and all of those lucky enough to have known him better than I did.

I haven't talked to Ryan in a long time but I thought of him on Thursday and I was going to send him a long overdue message the next week. Over the last few days I've written a poem for him. He was always a wonderful friend to me, ever since we were kids learning to hold a tennis racket. As we got older, he was the one I went to to ask questions about boys and I would try to help him understand the complexity of girls. lol I find myself so blessed to have had Ryan as my friend growing up and I just wanted to say how truly special he was.
Ryan
I thought of you the day before
Of you and your best friends
I was going to write you a note
A simple hello I have yet to send

I know I would have written you
I had things I wanted to say
Thank you for being my friend
Those times seem so far away

You’re the best friend
I could have asked for
You’re more like a brother to me
But so much more

As kids, so much time spent together
Friends on and off the court
I was ok, you were better
Games against you were always short

You call me Farmer
Whenever we meet
Your big smile is genuine
Everyone would call you sweet

Thank you for always being there
A great big hug, a listening ear
Or if I was down
A sideline cheer

Your smile can brighten any room
You’re so easy to be around
And when you really get laughing
Now that’s a crazy sound

You’re the whole package
Smart and funny, oh my
The curls and that cute face
You’re easy on the eyes

Picking me up in your little red car
Tennis practice carpool
Early mornings at The Spa
Then it was off to high school

Travelling with our teams
I’m so glad you were there
There are so many great memories
I’m happy that we share

We crossed the country
Tracksuits and headphones
Tournaments and tennis courts
Is where we did roam

We got along so well
But you’d still punch me in the arm
I couldn’t stay mad at you
Just something about your charm

Your buddies are the greatest
You’ve been together so long
There is so much love there
Your bonds are so strong

Going out with you and the boys
Chewy candies for a treat
Best friends forever
All squished in the backseat

You have such a lovely family
Your littlest and biggest fans
Cheering you on from the sidelines
Or high up in the stands

One of the last times I saw you
You introduced me to your wife
I’ve never seen you so happy
With Julie, the love of your life

I hope you know I love you
You’re heads above the rest
You’ve always been my favorite
Ryan, you’re the best.

I knew Ryan his entire life as a little boy playing with his cousins, my nieces and nephews. As a teenage working at the Co-op grocery store where he was always helpful and happy, even when I teased him about his beautiful blonde curls. Over the next period of his life I didn’t see him that much but whenever I did he was his usual sweet self. I saw Ryan for the last time the summer of 2019 when he spent the afternoon at Ross Lane beach with Erin’s family. He and Julie walked down the beach with the boys just to say hello. That’s the kind of person he was, a great son, brother, husband and father. My heart is broken for his family, especially Sam and Parker. The world has lost a special person. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ryan through my close colleague and friend Chady and his wife Nicole. The boys went on a Munro Day ski trip a couple years back and we had a great time. Ryan was a great skier which I figured would be the case after watching him overachieve in our DPMG HIIT fitness classes where our instructor would volunteer him to demonstrate the exercise. I watched and thought, got it, but I will not be able to do it at that level!

My youngest daughter and I spent the day at Wentworth for her first time learning this past Friday and I am in shock to have learned that this news hits so close to home.

The love and devotion to his family and friends is and always was obvious. I heard many stories about him, his wife and his eldest before I met him and I am sure all that Dad love he shared will be with his children forever. Indeed, he was a very warm character with a great sense of humour, always that smile on his face. In my parental experience, I think the curly hair also adds that extra bit of spunk, Ryan sure had it!

I am grateful to have known him and in such positive ways. This is tough and I trust that time, healing and all the love of those around his family and friends will carry them through.

My sincere condolences to his wife, beautiful children and his many family, friends and colleagues. May his love and positive light shine forever through all those who have known him.

I had the honour and privilege of working with Ryan at Dalhousie. He wore his amazing personality on his sleeve and in his smile. Always friendly, welcoming, positive and collaborative. It was a good thing when Ryan was involved in a project, team or group. Such a tragic loss and he will be forever missed.  My heart and love goes out to his many friends and family during this very difficult time. He was such a proud husband and father; I will always remember his stories of his family or seeing him proudly pushing a stroller along the sidewalk.

I’ve been cutting Ryan’s hair for over ten years and lucky enough to get to know him pretty well, and over the years meet his lovely wife Julie and eventually his kids Sam and Parker. I’ve even got to cut Sam’s hair as well (he got those Clow curls)!
Ryan had such a great sense of humour, and was so easy-going and kind, and it’s just been so nice catching up with him at haircut appointments over the years, hearing about the latest restaurant him and Julie had tried, his family trips to Hilton Head, or what crazy Halloween costume he would be wearing trick-or-treating with the boys.
He was the most devoted husband and father, he beamed when he talked about his family, and even when the kids were babies and him and Julie were barely getting any sleep, he never complained, he was just always so positive. I couldn’t imagine a guy who could love his family more than Ryan Clow.
Julie, Sam and Parker, you are in my thoughts, sending you and all of Ryan’s family and friends love and strength at this difficult time.

I was so shocked to hear of Ryan's death. It's still difficult to process. I worked closely with him on a couple of projects in the Faculty of Medicine. He was lovely, warm, and always, always smiling. I will always remember a meeting we had on or shortly after Halloween a few years ago. He started the meeting by showing pictures of his son, Sam, in his Halloween costume. He was such a proud and delighted father. My condolences to his wife, children, parents, and all of his family and close friends.

I had the privilege of working with Ryan at the Faculty of Medicine. He always had a smile on his face. His love for life was evident as he walked down the hallway and was always game for anything. We put together a United Way charity dodgeball team and he was bounding through the doors ready and geared up...didn't take much convincing to get him to play. I would see Ryan and Ian Taylor arrive for meetings with the Dean or his boss, Linda and the two of them just looked like little boys up to no good, with huge grins on their faces. My heart goes out to his wife and his boys. His love for his family was written all over his face. Thinking of you all.

This is so sad to see. Ryan and Julie were neighbours in Halifax (shared the same wall of a duplex). I spent my day today skiing at Wentworth with my wife and 3 children, pulling the kids out of school for the promise of a winter family adventure in a less than stellar year. I couldn’t avoid looking up through the snowy trees along Chickadee and Hurricane, wondering what line Ryan might have taken that day, and what misadventure transpired to take his life and gut his family’s hopes and dreams five short days ago.

What optimism he must have had that morning, thin snowbase and limited terrain but the treat of a weekday ski on Dalhousie’s annual Munro Day, celebrating Dal’s financial saviour from 165 years ago by taking the day off and walking away from one too many Zoom calls. You know the smile Ryan would have worn starting out that day—it’s in all his photos.

I met Ryan in 2000 while spending the summer in PEI, no doubt with Michael, Andy, Christian and Robin at some dive of a Charlottetown apartment. He was always smiling.

I would bump into him now and then in Halifax over the years, short conversations passing on the sidewalk or while monitoring a young child on the soccer pitch.

Goodbye, Ryan. I hope you spent your final day enjoying life and the joys of life’s adventures.

I hope your family can eventually find peace in time with your tragic death. I hope they remember you smile, your optimism and your joy, and learn to forget the pain of your loss.

Rest In Peace.

I wish I could give Ryan more words, but hadn't run into him enough. What I can say is that he was a natural. The type of guy you don't realize you only met 5 minutes ago. In a good way, he fit right in and had that perfect blend of confidence without ego. I also know how lovely yet persnickity Julie could be with a suitor, so if he passed all those tests I imagine he was a goliath of a man, and exponentially more so as a father. So sorry to hear the news.

I worked with Ryan and Julie at HASP back a few years. Ryan was always smiling but also he focussed on working hard. He paid attention to details which was good in our line of work. I recall him telling me about a conversation with his landscaper on his and Julie’s new house. He had taken a tape measure to check the thickness of topsoil across his lawn and where there was deficiency he wanted it corrected. Such dedication to quality. I am sure that same dedication carried into his marriage and parenthood as well. I can see from all the tributes how respected and loved Ryan was to many.

I met Ryan at UPEI back in 1996 and was fortunate to call him a friend for 20+ years. Ryan was the type of guy who was always easy to be around. He was funny, kind, genuine, and had the biggest heart. He would always be looking for ways to put a smile on anyone’s face - he knew I had a love of VWs, so he used to surprise me randomly in the family Jetta and take me for ice cream runs. After university our adult lives continued to intersect and we’d schedule visits or end up living in the same city for a few years...or we’d run into each other in weirder ways - I’ll never forget how I was sitting at a seaside bar in Tofino and off walks Damian and Ryan from a deep sea fishing boat. Like good islanders, we took the opportunity to tie a few on.

To Mike, Donalda, and Damian - I can’t imagine the loss you must be feeling, but take comfort in knowing that you raised and shaped a man that makes everyone feel richer for having known him.

To Julie, Sam, and Parker (and Libby!) - your husband and father was an amazing and loving man and he was surrounded by people who cared very deeply for him. Because of this, I know you will be circled by people who will ensure you are forever taken care of. You will have a lifetime of hearing great stories about him and the man that he was, and I’m confident that he’s going to continue to watch out for you in every way that he can. Because that’s just who he is.

To Ryan - I am so devastated that I have to write this post, but like so many others, I also feel so blessed that I got to be a part of your story. You had a beautiful way of making a big impression on anyone in a small amount of time. You will be so missed.

I received a text Saturday morning from a mutual friend. It said, Have you spoken with anyone yet this morning?... About? But my mind had already moved to brace itself for the incoming wave of emotions....I knew the response was going to hurt, but this one stopped me in my tracks. I had been walking with my kids enjoying a morning of snack hunting, but my son knew by my slumping shoulders that something terrible had happened. With my head down and a knot in my chest, I told them I'd catch up. I needed some time to take it in. Ryan is an old friend. He is an elementary friend, a playground friend, a birthday invitee, an adventurer, a teammate, a competitor, a tactician, a teacher, a skilled athlete, a leader, an intellectual, a humble, gentle, and kind soul. He had big smile and a bigger heart. As most Island friendships go, you bump into people over the years, you hear so and so is home, you ask family members how they are doing..... and if you are fortunate enough you will bump into those special people yourself. You'll share a laugh, reminisce, pick up where you left off and look forward to the next time. There were many of those times over the years with Ryan.... I know we'd all love some more. To Donalda, Mike, and Damian, I'm so sorry for your loss. Ryan was such a great person. To Julie, Sam, and Parker, your husband and your dad was a beautiful mix of everything we should all strive to be. May you all find solace in the loving community of friends and family that surround and support you all.

Peace and Love

RIP Mouse

Watching them build a life together through engagement, marriage, houses, beautiful kids, and everything in between was a privilege. I remember going to visit when Sam was born - Ryan was SO excited and happy to be a Dad! I will forever see Ryan when I look at those adorable boys. One of the wonderful things about living by Ryan and Julie was seeing what a loving and devoted dad he was on a daily basis. Sam and Parker, you hit the jackpot when it comes to dads. Living down the street, it was common to see you and your dad out front all year long. You were all involved – mowing grass, raking leaves, clearing snow and building one of the largest snowmen I've ever seen on this block. You were part of the team. Ryan was friendly and easy to talk to, and when we stopped to chat and comment on your contributions to whatever task was undertaken, your dad would always look at you with a beaming smile, so proud of you.

Ryan clearly had fun being a dad. During the Covid-19 lockdown last Spring, we often saw the three of you walking to watch the construction site on Chebucto Road. Your dad took you to see the giant crane there multiple times a day, day after day. He would park the stroller on the corner and you'd stop to watch the show. You enjoyed it and he enjoyed your pleasure in it.

The last time I saw Ryan was after a snowfall. He was helping to build and pack down a little mountain in the yard closest to the street where the plows had gotten the mountain started. Inside the mountain was a cave where Sam could hide. It had two exits and was a pretty cool thing to play in, though there were mixed ideas about how to construct some doors. There was talk of a snowball pile, but that had some drawbacks. That's the sort of thing your dad did with you.

You didn't get nearly as much time with him as anyone would wish, but the time you did get with him was good time. He loved you so much and clearly showed it every day of your lives. No matter how locked away your own memories of you dad might be in time, remember that in the time you shared together he was a dad who was very much present for you – an engaged and nurturing parent who will always be a part of you. xo

Though Dennis has known you longer than I, I can honestly say you both were the kindest and sincerest friends to us through the years. Ryan's smile will be etched in our memories and the shared times we've had will be remembered with happiness. Sam and Parker, your dad was one of a kind. He gave us thoughtful and encouraging advice when we were both nervous to become parents. I will never forget when Archer was born, your mom and dad gave us a sweet care package that included "Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site". This book has remained a staple at bedtime in our house and always makes me think of each of you. He loved you beyond measure and it showed in everything he did with you. My favourite memory has to be our last intramurals frisbee game where we played in the snow and all got bruises on our shins from the icy top layer hitting us as we ran down the field.

Even after our MBA days, I loved bumping into Ryan and Julie strolling downtown. It was always a pleasure to see him with his kids; he was clearly a proud, happy father and his great smile was now mirrored on the faces of his children.

My husband and I are heartbroken for Ryan’s family. Please know that you are in our thoughts. I hope that in the coming days and weeks you have time to mourn together and to share happy memories of the amazing person that Ryan was. Sending all the love and Strength.

I have known Ryan for 25 years when I started dating his cousin and he welcomed me into the Clow family as his cousin in law. He always had a smile on his face whenever we saw him. He was my guide on my first trip to PEI. He was the first cousin to meet our new born daughter. He was just the most loving and caring person and we will truly miss him. There is nothing we can say that will heal the pain of losing Ryan but those boys of his and Julie were the light of his life. He will always be remembered with a smile ❤️

I first met Ryan through Julie, who dragged him to our yoga classes at least a few times a year. He was always so good natured - such a kind and easy person. Julie and Ryan were always the first to register for our studio's Christmas Eve class. They took pride in making it an annual tradition, and we loved seeing them arrive every year at their annual "yoga date". Julie, Ryan and Sam are such important, beautiful and valuable pieces of my life. I am so thankful for having known Ryan, and having seen the love he gave Julie and Sam.

I first met Ryan, and his brother Damien when we were just kids growing up in PEI, our parents were friends and I can recall many family fun adventures with Ryan and Damien. Always fun, always full of laughter. I will cherish those memories.

Julie, my deepest condolences on your loss. Seeing Ryan on oak street or the bus stop with the kids always brought a smile, he was a truly wonderful person.

Mike, Donnelda, Damien, I am so sorry for the loss of your son and brother. You are in my thoughts

My heart is so heavy writing this today. My dearest sympathies, prayers and thoughts go out to Ryan’s family and friends at this time. I was a colleague of Ryan’s in the Faculty of Medicine and although I didn’t see him or work with him all the time, I always enjoyed our conversations at team events and any work related functions. He was truly someone who when you spoke with him, you always left feeling positive, smiling and/or laughing. Such a great colleague.

Since hearing the news, I have been wanting to share part of an email he wrote me before heading on to my first
Maternity leave 3 years ago approx. I didn’t know where else to share it, but I wanted to ensure that it was captured somewhere because it just showed how much he loved his family so very much and treasured being a Dad. With all of the fears of becoming a new parent, this message was one of hope, which was so appreciated at the time.

My sincerest condolences.

I don't know how I can begin to write anything as I'm still not ready to accept any of this. I was trying to remember how Ryan and I met and I honestly don't remember. I am sure it involved Queen Street one way or the other. It was just like one day, he was a constant fixture in my life and you couldn't ask for a better friend. My university years are so tied up with my friendship with Ryan I can't separate the two. Years later after moving back East, Ryan and I found ourselves both working at Dal and he immediately reached out and always made sure to book time in our calendar for monthly lunches. Because that's just who he was. I am happy I got the opportunity to get to know Ryan as a father and a husband. Although different from when we were in university together, he was still the same warm, funny and caring person. I will miss Ryan so much. I grieve the friend I lost. I grieve for his family knowing what a monumental loss this is. And for his friends, knowing what a big part of their lives he was. Ryan's memory will definitely live on. His presence was too meaningful to be forgotten.

I was shocked to hear of the sudden passing of Ryan on Friday. I can’t find a picture of Ryan where he doesn’t have a big smile on his face. That’s what type of person he was. Positive, upbeat, full of energy and that smile was contagious.
I wasn’t coaching very much tennis back in the early ’90s as I was traveling and going back to school in Maine, but in the summer of 1993, I was asked if I’d take the PEI team to the Atlantics in St. John’s Newfoundland. It was one of those plum assignments I used to get in those years; put 12 kids in a 15 passenger van with a parent chaperone, take two ferries and drive to Newfoundland for a week. I agreed because if I didn’t go I didn't think the kids would get to go.
Ryan was on that trip. He was an up and coming junior, training for the Canada Games that year.
I remember Ryan had this funny way of putting his hat on backward with the strap over his nose and it made him look like a mouse, so that became his nickname. I don’t think he was a fan, so later in the tournament when he upset some seeded players, and qualified for the nationals for the first time I told him “mouse” wouldn’t work anymore, Not intimidating enough for a player as good as him. I started calling him “moose” instead, a nickname I always used when I saw him, and one that always got a smile and a chuckle from him. 2
I remember later that summer he beat me in a set of singles for the first time. I also remember thinking, I not going to be able to beat him again. His game was too solid, it didn't have any flaws - his character was much the same.
He was the guy that set the standard for a lot of the junior players who followed him. He showed them that a player from PEI could compete at the Atlantics and could qualify for the nationals. He was focused, and professional and one of the hardest-working kids I ever knew. He was a consummate gentleman on and off the court. He became a role model and mentor for guys like Taylor Ferrier, Jamie Lawlor, and many more. Nels Stanfield, Martin Madsen, and I took him on some trips with us and he became like a little brother, and then a close friend.
Often when he came back to visit the island he would get in touch with me and we would get out to hit some balls and go for a beer. The last time I played in the Island Open he was my doubles partner. Any time I coach my focus isn’t on wins and losses so much as trying to build a life-long love of the sport. It made me happy to hear that he still loved tennis and he was still playing at the Waegwoltic Club in Halifax.
My heart goes out to his family and friends, he will be missed by all who knew him. When the world gets back to normal again Nels, Taylor, Martin, and I will get together, play dome doubles and raise a glass to our friend.

A testament to his family and friends growing up and the way he was raised, I'm fortunate to have gotten to know him just a little bit.

I’m not sure I can find the words to quantify what you meant to me right now. We got to share so many experiences throughout our lifelong friendship, for which I am truly thankful. Especially now these last 8 months since i moved my family to NS, and getting to spend so much time with you Julie and the boys. We were so excited to be getting to raise our families together. I will watch over Julie, Sam and Parker for you, and ensure the boys will know what a great man their father was. I miss you very much, love you brother

I moved to Halifax in 2005 to do my MBA at SMU. I had the great fortune of meeting Julie at the very first school event and we quickly formed a strong friendship. Ryan started his MBA the following year. I remember meeting him in the MBA Lounge when school started in 2006. You could immediately tell he was an easy going guy who was kind, considerate, funny, athletic, and smart. He was nice to everyone he met, inclusive and always a team player pulling his weight and helping others out. No wonder he caught Julie's eye! I moved back to Toronto but was thrilled to hear about their relationship through phone calls, texts, emails and visits. Julie was happy and excited, comfortable and confident, and unconditionally loved. For that I loved Ryan. Even though we lived far apart I always looked forward to our visits over the years - dinners in Halifax, baseball games in Toronto, weddings in New Brunswick and PEI, meeting babies (how happy he was to be a dad and if it were up to him one of you boys may have been named Stone Clow!) and other reunions in between. I have been thinking of Ryan non stop - revisiting all my memories with him. And in every memory he is smiling, which is how I will always remember him. Nick and I are sending love to all of Ryan's family and friends. Xo

Ryan was such a great person. I last worked with him in 2011, before he went to Dal. He was so easy to work with - he gave everything his full attention and effort. It was evident he would do big things! Ryan talked about Julie a lot - his love for her was clear. He had such a positive outlook on life and looked forward to having a family. I am heartbroken for Ryan’s loved ones. You are all in my thoughts
