Our darling Mirabel was born on July 26, 2008. She was a joyful child who loved bugs and animals, music, swimming, ice skating, reading, and being with her many friends and widespread family. She attended the House of Representatives Childcare Center, Peabody & Watkins Elementary Schools, BASIS DC, and Capitol Hill Day School.
Mirabel will be missed beyond measure by her parents Steve Cha and Jennifer Megan Telfair and her big brother Gabriel Telfair-Cha of Washington, D.C; her maternal grandparents Bill and Carole Telfair of Shepherdstown, West Virginia; her paternal grandparents Dr. Eung Man and Okee Cha of Honolulu, Hawaii; aunts Caty Telfair and Sandy Sifferlen; uncles Roger Rohrbach, Mark Sifferlen, Charles Cha, and Brian Youngblood; her eleven wonderful cousins; and an extended and loving community of family and friends.
Mirabel took her own life and left us far too early. Our love is never ending and extends to all those who have offered such tremendous support and to families everywhere who struggle with issues of anxiety and depression.
Mirabel was surrounded by a loving community, and made profound and wonderful friendships wherever she went. We invite everyone who knew and loved her to share messages, memories and tributes with each other and with her family here.

Mirabel was known and loved by so many. We invite those with a personal connection to Mirabel or her family and who are fully vaccinated to attend the memorial in person. In the interest of ensuring everyone’s safety, particularly unvaccinated children, all others, including children under age 12, should attend virtually. It’s been a year today. Mirabel was always there when me or any of her friends needed comforting. She was just always laughing or cracking a joke with me during class. My favorite memory I have of her would have to be when she got me for secret Santa and she bought me a bunny stuffed animal. It’s on my bed every night ever since. It’s a constant reminder of how lucky I am to have known such a charismatic and wonderful person, and to be able to have called her my friend. My condolences to everyone else that knew her and her family.

Tomorrow is a year and I still don't know what to say. Megan, Steve, and Gabriel, we are so grateful for all the time we had with Mirabel. The best memory I have of Mirabel is playing at the bus stop. We would drop our backpacks as soon as we got there, and we'd run around in circles. Mirabel would scream out "Gabelllll" and then jump on Gabe. She was the leader of the quote "sixth grade army", which consisted of around 20 sixth graders and 10 seventh and eighth graders who would do anything to make us 9th graders laugh. She was a confident and bright young girl, who was powerful and so. Much. Fun. I will miss her more than I ever thought possible. I love you Mirabel.

I haven’t seen Mirabel in a few years. But we were friends at Watkins. He older brother Gabriel was good friends with my neighbors, so we would all go sledding together. Looking back our parents just didn’t want to all go to congressional cemetery with us. But, the way I remember it I got to go sledding with my friends. Her smile lit up every room she was in. She will forever be frozen in my mind as the girl with the amazing smile sledding down the big hill. To her family, I am so sorry for your loss. Mirabel was truly a great person and friend.

Mirabel was an incredible friend who would climb mountains with you and then ski down them. She would go camping and hiking and even kayaking (as long as she could still be in bed by 8 pm). She could convince you to jump into freezing cold swimming pools and eat your green beans. She shared the best comics and apps and made a mean chocolate cake. But mostly, she was a really good friend that you could talk to and she would make you feel better. We all desperately miss her.

Mirabel's friendship with Nora and Owen brought immeasurable joy to their lives. Their many trips and adventures together were shared with me via pictures and recounting of their time together from the kids and the AllenandElaine blog. She always seemed to bring just the right balance of focus and playfulness to our lessons and practices. 1st let me say I'm Praying for strength and courage during this time. I 1st met Mirabel in aftercare at Watkins and there was an instant connection she was always kind, loving, and willing to help others. Even after leaving Watkins she always came to visit her favorite aftercare teacher which always put a smile on my face. Mirabel will truly be missed and her memory and the memories we shared together will forever be with me.

Sweet Mirabel always had a smile and a friendly laugh to share with anyone she met. She was a good and reliable friend. She made Girl Scouts so much fun whether it was selling cookies, camping or preparing for thinking day. Commuting to and from school was so much better with her and Gabriel leading the way. We marveled at her swimming ability when we would arrive at lessons just as she was finishing. She loved to give our cats a scratch and pet our dog every chance she could get. Dear Megan, Steve and Gabriel - I am heartbroken about Mirabel, and I cannot even imagine how shattered your lives and hearts are feeling. Mirabel and Gabe have been very important to me as a connection to the younger generation in my grandmotherless years before Shae was born. (almost 2 years ago!) I recall babysitting for Gabriel before he could walk and being amazed at his knowledge of animals from all over the world. I remember holding Mirabel's sweet little hand as we ran on the grass by the Martin Luther King Memorial. Flashes of picnics in the park, walks in the woods, a children's skit in the garden area behind your house, playing games, family reunions, holiday celebrations and fabulous meals have been in my dreams these past nights. And of course, one of my clearest and fondest memories is canoeing with Mirabel on the last day of our family trip - she was tired but so proud of how she had learned to paddle, and very excited about the eagles, herons and turtles. I recall that at our last Christmas together she gave each of the adults a handmade card saying she loved us. Such a tender, compassionate heart. I know the healing journey for all three of you will be long and difficult. I also believe your resilience and love for each other as well as your capacity to receive all the love and caring which is being given to you, will support you through the many ups and downs of this long road no one should ever have to walk. I had the pleasure of driving Mirabel to FDIA for synchro practice ever third Saturday at ~8:00 a.m. over three seasons. Walking to the car, Mirabel did not come across as a morning person. But the moment she got in the car and saw her friends, hilarity ensued. I’ll always remember her laughter coming from behind the driver’s seat, her teaming up with Nina, Milo, Noa and Caroline to explain that Fugazi was “dad music” and that it didn’t matter if the band came from D.C., they were still “dad music”. I’m glad I have those memories, but deeply sad that Mirabel isn’t here to share them.

This is Mirabel's flag on the National Mall - a tribute to those who died in the pandemic. She did not succumb to Covid, but she was a true casualty of a terribly difficult time- especially for young people. We loved her dearly and will remember her all our lives.

Megan, Steve and Gabriel, I am so very sorry and absolutely heartbroken to hear this news. I adored Mirabel. She was funny, charming, smart and witty and always had her mermaid blanket ready for me when I arrived. She would help me get my legs into it so I stayed warm while teaching, and was just a delight to teach and chat with. Words cannot express how devastated I am and how much love I am sending you all.

It brought us so much joy to be outside with Mirabel and the girls. I loved seeing them laughing, independent, and a little wild. The girls all gelled together in a way that felt so comfortable and easy. We just wanted to do it all over again, as soon as the hikes had ended. It also felt special to me to find new families where kids and grownups alike all connected so easily.
Megan, your family is in our hearts daily. We feel Mirabel's loss so keenly and will always remember her sweet smile.

Mirabel was a force in the neighborhood. We watched her grow up from the time she moved in as a toddler to a lovely, smart, witty, fun, energetic young person. She was a wonderful friend to Emi and made everything more interesting and exciting. We have so many photos and memories of shared birthday parties, camping trips, dinners at home, garden parties, Halloween, and shared holiday meals. Thank you, Megan and Steve and Gabriel for allowing us to share a piece of your world and to be a part of Mirabel’s life all of these years. We will miss her terribly. Megan, Steve and Gabriel, our family is so sorry for your loss. I know that Mirabel was deeply loved by you. I hope there is some comfort in knowing how many others were touched by her bright light. We first met Mirabel as the tiny little sister peeking in Ms. Kaufman's door when Gabriel joined the classroom. It gave me great joy to watch Mirabel discover the love of figure skating and synchro as she grew. She was in fact the cutest kitten on the ice, as Shelly said.
Eleanor is grateful for the time they shared together at Watkins and Fort Dupont. We are so very sorry for your loss and are holding you in the Light.

Mirabel was a wonderful girl. She had a magnetic personality - always fun and loving. I’m attaching one of my favorite photos of her during a synchro competition.

Mirabel will be missed at Friends Meeting of Washington.. I remember her beautiful eyes. And the way she would search my face looking for authenticity and any more information.. Mirabel asked penetrating questions. She was particularly attuned emotionally to the suffering of others. She was a keen observer and saw much that was wondrous...I think she had a gift to see the world the way things were....and not the way they were always presented. There is no question in my mind that each Sunday we were the better for her presence.

Mirabel was a sweet girl that brought light to the rink. She was a wonderful skate sister and will not be forgotten. We will continue to cherish our happy memories with her. The Francis family sends their deepest condolences to the Telfair-Cha family.

I was a classmate of Mirabel in CHDS and even in my short time of knowing her I could)d recognize how much of a wonderful, caring, creative, and funny person she was. At break and recess she knew so much about the cicadas and helped me and others appreciate them.
She was so kind and gentle, smart and nurturing, I will never forget Mirabel. She was truly an exceptional person and someone who will forever have a large positive impact on my life. I've been thinking about her a lot recently, and wish the family well through these horrible times.

I've had the privilege of witnessing Mirabel grow up in our Kids on Ice synchro program over the past five years. I will hold onto the memories of watching her master a new skating skill and tackle challenges through teamwork, of her laughing and bonding and being goofy with her teammates. I will remember her as a thoughtful and kind friend, as a cat, a Ghostbuster, as Miley Cyrus. Her memory will continue to shape and bless the many lives she touched through skating.
To Megan and Steve and the Telfair-Cha family, you are being held by so many in our skating family. We are here for you in whatever capacity you need.

Mirabel was a young star of the spontaneous theatrical performances we had on the block when the kids were little. She made everything a million times funnier. I will never forget her infectious laugh and beautiful smile. RIP, little one

Mirabel had a way of lifting up others on the team. She was kind, funny, and a great part of our skating family and she forever will be. She will always and forever be one of the many joys of Fort DuPont and her memory will always live on in all of us.
