Biographie

Megan passed away January 8 in Midland at her parents after a short battle with cancer. Megan found she had a tumor on her liver on Dec 6, did several rounds of chemo starting 12/28 but it was too far along and too aggressive to beat. Her family decided to move her to hospice care Thursday at their home. She was surrounded by the love of the family and friends that came around.

A tribute from Megan's friend Kate:

A Loss Not Lost

How do you say goodbye to one of your dearest friends?

You don't.

You stand by their bedside and say, "I'll see you tomorrow."

It wasn't a lie even though your bed was empty the next morning.

I see you in my mind and hear you in my thoughts.

I see you in our friends as we talk.

I see you in your parents, in photographs, in memories.

I see you in the water and the waves.

I saw you in the candy store as I looked at champagne bubbles and bought a handful of them for us to share.

I'll see you in the color red.

I'll see you in water slides and stacks of quilts.

I'll see you in sappy movies

And on Trails you wouldn't generally walk.

I'll see you in floating docks

And round tables.

I'll see you in a well stocked bar

And in glasses with blobs of color on them.

I'll continue to see you in sparkling grape juice

And in packs of chocolate chip cookie dough.

I'll continue to see you in cups of tea, Jones Soda, ice skates, little Hills, chopsticks and fortune cookies.

You will dine with us every time we have tuna steaks.

This is not really "Goodbye."

I'll see you later.

Donations

If you are wanting to donate money in Megan’s memory, we’d like to suggest Pretty Lake Camp. Meg worked at Pretty Lake for some summers when she was attending WMU. She loved what the camp stood for and could be accomplished with kids in a week.

Pretty Lake Camp

9123 Q Ave. W Mattawan, MI 49071

100 Years of Changing Childhoods Since 1916, Pretty Lake Camp has provided a totally free summer camp for more than 50,000 youth in the Kalamazoo County area who could benefit the most from the experience. No family pays to attend this nonprofit camp and everything is provided for them – from toothbrushes to clothing to transportation. Pretty Lake relies on financial and in-kind donations from friends, donors and foundations to help support our core mission; to provide life-changing experiences through free summer camp and experiential learning. Our vision is that experiences at Pretty Lake will build stronger communities and a more just, inclusive and compassionate world. Our future goals are to enhance our educational component and reduce generational poverty. Pretty Lake also provides the community with year round services such as facilities rentals and programming through the Adventure Centre, as one of Southwest Michigan’s leaders in providing outdoor team building and leadership training.

I know everyone who ever knew Megan is still missing her... I was Megan’s housemate for a short time (on Evergreen, in Ann Arbor) - too short a time, like everything for her.
She & I once took a class at Zingerman’s; I’m doing another in her honor this summer.
Wishing peace for her family and many friends.

Dearest Megan,
Happy Birthday my friend! Sharing the same birthday with you isn't the same this year.
Cheers to the wish you were here, but you're not,
'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories,
Of everything we've been through,
It's been a long day without you, my friend,
And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again,
We've come a long way from where we began,
Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again,
When I see you again,
Good things we been through,
Bout another path, I know we loved to hit the road and laugh,
Cheers to the wish you were here, but you're not,
'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories,
Of everything we've been through,
And what's small turned to a friendship, a friendship turned to a bond
And that bond will never be broken, the love will never get lost,
(The love will never get lost)!
Today could have been the day,
That you'd blow out your candles,
Make a wish as you closed your eyes,
Not a day goes by that I don't think of you,
Such a ray of light, Such a beautiful light,
Gone too soon!
Hugs and Love Forever my dear friend!

My heart hurts learning the news today. I had the pleasure of meeting Megan in 2014 in Orlando at a prevention conference. She was so much fun and a joy to be around. We stayed in touch and caught up together whenever we were at the same prevention conference. She shared her love of food and invited me on culinary adventures from Bouchon in Las Vegas to the Succotash in Washington DC. I always looked forward to seeing you Megan, rest in peace. I will miss you!

I’ve known Megan (Hollywood) since we were both 16, working at Camp Oak Hills. Several summers there created a lifelong friendship and some of my most memorable experiences both at camp and outside it too. While
life eventually took us different directions, we managed to always stay in touch, connecting as often as we could. I will always remember our breaks down at the waterfront or the campfire, the swims across the lake, our drive to Pensacola, then later Myrtle Beach (so glad you quit there right away!!), that kick boxing class she made me try and our attempt at “jogging” in the mornings. Her family treated me always as family. She was a loyal friend, encouraging and supportive, and a listening ear often when I needed it most. Gone far too soon, she will be missed dearly. Love you Hollywood <3

Megan was my very best friend in early elementary school. We were always together until I moved from Midland to the Detroit area and even then we would try to get together now and then up until I went away to college. We were in Girl Scouts together, went camping together, took swim classes and I spent lots of time in her home and with her family. I remember the day we went to get her ears pierced. After they did the first one she totally freaked out and wouldn't let them do the second. She spent the whole afternoon with only one earing. Then at the end of the day we went back and she finally decided to let them do the second one. It took me many years before I was willing to get my own ears pierced after that day, though she kept trying to tell me afterwards that it really wasn't that bad.

I'm so sorry to hear about Megan's passing. We had so many great sleepovers, walks to school, and trick or treating adventures. Not to mention hours in the basement playing with barbies. She taught me the joy of cheesy popcorn, for which I am ever thankful. I remember her being very determined, and after reading about what she accomplished it sounds like she used that to make an profound impact on so many lives. Way to go Megan! You will be missed.

Reading all of your memories has painted such an accurate picture of ‘everything Megan.’ I have laughed and cried reading all these entries. I have wanted to leave a memory of Megan but my mind and heart have been struggling to accept this devastating news and words have been eluding me. It is clear that she was so so so special to all of us. We were so blessed to know Megan and the world is definitely not as bright without her.

I was fortunate enough to work with Megan at Barry County CMH. My work days were better because of her. I appreciated her ‘sanity walks’ that brought her to my office. She would surprise me with home fermented kimchee and quirky gifts from Archie McPhee. I still have all her inspirational cards on my board in my office. We all loved and benefited from her celebration of all the random food holidays, making dips and appetizers and glorified grilled cheeses at work (ps, who knew arugula and pesto would be so damn good on a grilled cheese??) She did sort of push it one time with the SPAM sliders, but I went along with it because she had yet to steer me wrong. It was the only time I have ever eaten SPAM and there isn’t another person on this planet who could make it look so adorable and yummy with cheese, bread and a toothpick. It only took her 2 full work days to convince me to try goat cheese. I wasn’t a fan, but she laughed her hilarious squeaky cough laugh so it was worth it. She made up for it with introducing me to eating a slice of sharp cheddar cheese on a thin slice of tart apple, and to this day that is a favorite of mine.

It didn’t take long for us to build a friendship that extended beyond the reaches of work. I remember attending a jewelry party at her apartment above the insurance company in Hastings. No party would have been complete without us all coming early to help her make homemade wontons, well, I mean without us all coming early to drink beer while Megan made wontons and we watched in amazement. Then later her gifting me a bracelet that made her itchy because her skin was sensitive to everything on the planet.

I remember her and I driving from Hastings to Lake Odessa to pick up lunch because everyone knows Chee Peng has the best Chinese food. Our mutual love for lo mein ran deep. I always looked forward to our dinner dates when she would house sit for Katy and Bruce in Lake Odessa, my home town. Most recently we were able to have dinner and drinks at Buddy’s in Lake O. I will cherish that memory forever.

We helped Megan moved out of that apartment above the insurance company in Hastings. She wasn’t able to fit all her furniture at her new place, so my husband and I brought all the extra stuff to her parent’s home. In meeting Meg’s parents, it was evident how Megan was such a phenomenal human. They are the same way. After unloading the trailer, Megan’s mom made us bread and we sat and visited while my daughter played marbles. I felt like I had known them for a lifetime as well.

Mom and Dad Palmer, my heart is shattered and I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you feel all the supportive vibes being sent your way during this difficult time. I can say without any sort of hesitation that I am a better person because of your daughter and thank you for gifting her to the world, if only for a short time.

“BROWNIES!” my wife’s eyes got as big as beignets from her native land, “BEST IN THE WORLD!” And if you can get a native of France to pronounce such a title on your culinary creation – you are indeed EXTRAORDINARY.
Such is our memory of Megan – EXTRAORDINARY - for many reasons on many levels.
Meagan had the incredible ability to meet you – right where you were – with true understanding and invested empathy in case you ever needed to meet her where she was in that caring, giving, guiding, compassionate place she resided.
Megan also had the uncanny gift of sizing up a person to wit she “hired” my 6’7” 300 lbs professional mechanic brother to repair her chef level mixer and his salary was… MEGAN’S INCREDIBLE BROWNIES!! They both won in that exchange.
One of my fondest memories of Megan was a Wednesday night grilling at the Hastings Skatepark and HER eyes lit up for the generous gift someone had made of split top buns for my burnt hotdogs! It was like Christmas morning for her…but her joy was short-lived as she witnessed a number of our young skaters/riders approaching the grill with fistfuls of dough – because they had never seen a split top bun before and were mangling them... Megan to the rescue! And after a short culinary seminar everyone was on the same page munching away happily.
I also chaperoned a 24 hour youth “lock-in” with Megan and as they all played 5 on 5 hoop I simply wandered to the other end of the court and was doing a solitary shoot around. Megan sensed my longing to “run the court” but also realized my wisdom in abstaining, so she kept me company and sunk more than a few shots herself – I appreciated that – a lot.
So in a world which measures success in what and how much we can consume, I give thanks for a spirit like Megan who clearly scaled her accomplishments but how much she served. Our world was a much better place for her having moved, lived, and loved in it.

Humans like Hollywood should be granted multiple lifetimes. I've attempted to fathom the number of other humans she has smiled at, melted their hearts and helped them find hope when they thought there was none. Each time, I find myself quickly overwhelmed. If we added up all of our fingers and toes, it would not even come close to the number of humans Hollywood has positively impacted.
I feel she has presented a challenge to me. She has inspired me to strive to offer support to the same amount of humans as she has. Meanwhile, it feels like even 50% is a lofty goal compared to Hollywood's offerings to others.
She taught me soooooo much. I am forever grateful for her presence in my life.

Megan's kindness and love for food overwhelmed me the other day as I was making California rolls for my family. About 18 years ago, we were at a family Christmas at Jim and Ann's home. Megan was making "made to order" California rolls. I was in awe. I asked if she would teach me and without hesitation she agreed. Megan carefully showed me each step as I frantically wrote it down. I still have and use that recipe today, which has become a regular and favorite dinner at our house. Thank you, Megan for sharing your love of food with me so that I can share it with my boys ❤️

I have started and stopped several entries here. I have felt a bit like an interloper, that my words would seem exaggerated when compared to those who knew Megan for years or decades or her whole life. I decided, though, that Megan had that affect on folks. She drew people to her. Megan and I had a shared love of 90's pop culture and adventurous food...though she was far more adventurous than me. I am sad for myself, that I will not have the chance to be a long time friend. I am sad for the community, that it has lost such a capable and devoted advocate. I am devastated for those who did know Megan longer, those who now have a far bigger Megan-shaped gap in their hearts than I but who also were counting on so much more time, especially her parents. I am and always will be for what space and time in Megan's world I occupied. I hope it brought her the same relief to vent about work together as it did me and that she had as many genuine laughs as I did. Her light and love will carry forward through many of you here and many others she touched personally and professionally. But I'm gonna stay mad that science wasn't fast enough to give all of us the benefit of her for much longer.

This is a photo of my friend.. Megan Palmer, who lost her very short battle with liver cancer on January 8th. This smiling photo of her was from Thanksgiving weekend, before her rapid decline. I met Megan when she was about 7 years old through my friendship with her mother. Being born premature, she fought for life from day one. I distinctly remember trying to talk her out of her career choice of being a social worker. I argued that it would be heart-wrenching, making very little money. I was taken back by how assured the young girl was with her decision to help others. The soft-spoken girl went on to work for the poor and those dismissed by society. When I visited her the week after her diagnosis, I was shocked to see her sitting at the kitchen table working- trying to locate a relative to rehome displaced children. After learning of her tragic news, she was still working to help others. She embraced me with a hug and greeted me with a smile, as though she was there to comfort me. I reflect back on her life and realize that she was put here on earth to teach us about humanity- about serving others, without judgement and without reward. If we all had a small piece of her goodness, what a better world this would be. I am sure she has a special place in heaven. God Bless Megan’s parents in the loss of their only child. No one should have to bury a child. God Bless the Palmer family. Remember Megan's goodness forever!

I first met Megan when she worked at the Connection and she joined many of the LCCA activities. Then she went to Barry County for a job that really provided her with a new professional challenge. I was thrilled when she returned to Livingston County and joined the Substance Abuse Prevention Team here at LCCC. She quickly became a well-liked and well-respected Coworker. Then, she became the Program Director. Megan excelled in this role and led local prevention efforts to transition when Covid hit. Megan's energy and creativity kept the substance abuse prevention efforts moving forward at a difficult time.

I will very much miss Megan's passion to her work and to the other values that she had to make her corner of the world a more just place for everyone. Megan was a gift to us at LCCC, the LCCA and to our community.

But it resulted in hearing that wonderful laugh of hers, you know the one that keeps going and is so infectious. I will always love and thank her for being a part of my life.

I worked with Megan at Livingston County Catholic Charities and we were known as "the two Megan's." She was Megan P, and I was Megan V. You can imagine some of the funny mistakes that would happen with voicemails and messages. We shared many laughs as many of my clients would walk into her office instead of mine and say simply, "oops!" as they made their way one more door down. She would look up and smile every time. She was an amazing person and knew how to make people laugh. The last day I saw her, she was on a zoom meeting and I went quietly into her office to give her a fidget toy that she had been talking about. As I was walking out, I heard her yell, "this is the best gift ever! The other Megan just gave me this!" I went back into my office smiling because I knew she was smiling. I will miss my friend dearly.

I received this poem in the mail on Friday and it seemed so timely. It also gives me a little peace to think of Megan being welcomed by those who have gone before her. I loved her humor, and passion, and dedication to our community. In November (the last time I saw Megan in person), Megan and Hayley gave me a feel better present because I had been so stressed out. It was so unexpected and kind - just like she was to all. I will miss you dearly, my friend. I know you are only gone from my sight for now.

Gone From My Sight
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side, spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone."
Gone where?
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast, hull, and spar as she was when she left my side. And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.

And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"
And that is dying...

Megan and I worked together at Barry County CMH. As I was starting my journey there, she was ending hers. During that time, she lovingly showed me the ropes of prevention. She shared fun tips, too, like the best local coffee shops. She introduced me to Pho and Kimchi and continued to share recipes, books, and podcasts and anything she thought I might be interested in even years after working together. She had a gift for making people feel seen and special just for being who they are. She was a huge advocate for community and her life became an expression of all the people she made feel connected and loved. Megan, you will be missed by all the people lucky enough to have known you. Cheers, friend!

Hollywood (we only used camp names) passed away this past weekend.

She was one of a kind. Even as a teenager she loved herself and her uniqueness and invited those around her to love themselves and embrace their own uniqueness. Not a small feat in awkward adolescence and young adulthood!

She wanted to change the world and she did so one person at a time, fixing any problem she could, even before you saw it yourself. When I was 18 I told her my lifeguarding certification was expiring but it was ok because I didn’t need it. She was appalled. The next thing I knew she was on the phone, then we were in the car, and suddenly at a pool. She convinced her friend, teaching lifeguarding, to test me. Bam! I was re-certified. And that certification was how I paid for my associates degree. I will be forever grateful.

In the words of one of our most beloved camp songs:
Have you ever seen the sunrise turn the sky completely red?
Have you sat beneath the moon and stars with a pine bough o’er your head?
Can you sit and talk with friends
Though a word is never said?
Then your just like me and you’ve been on the loose.

Hollywood, I am so thankful I got to be on the loose with you, even for a moment. You will forever be missed. -Butterfly

I met the Palmer's half a lifetime ago when I moved in next door. They were great neighbors in a great neighborhood. Megan was always actively engaged in something social... swimming, camp, volunteering, cooking with company, and more. She brought personality and spirit to everything, even the car she called "Old Blue" or whatever the color happened to be. She had heart and kindly helped me to rehome countless chipmunks to better places away from foundations and Weber the cat. We moved away a few years ago and don't get back often enough. I last saw Megan on a warm summer day when we gathered on the Palmer's back deck beside the peaceful koi pond surrounded by a hosta and fern garden. It was always the spot for good conversation and great company, and that day was no exception as we talked with Megan about the work she loved and a pending move to Ann Arbor. I hope to return to that garden at the next opportunity to recenter and cherish things dear, especially Megan. Much love to Deb and Tom in the meantime -- Rob, Sue & Meilin

I am saddened to learn of Megan’s passing. We worked together at Connection in Howell. She tolerated me being the FNG. I remember many good times laughing at the drop in center over 10 years ago and pondering how to effectively help at-risk teenagers. We solidly ruled out Yanni music as an effective tool beyond clearing out the room. We kept in touch on occasion to reminisce and continue to laugh about one of our favorite skits on MadTV, Can I Get Your Number? Quoting lines like “The back of your head is ridiculous!” May her sweet spirit live on in the hearts of those who knew and appreciated her. Prayers for her family and lasting impact the lives of others she served in the helping profession. God’s peace in this time of sorrow!
