O'Neal's Law~ Murphy was an optimist!
Mom,You endured so many ups and downs through a sense of humor and always anchored by what mattered most..."your kids". Debbie, Karol and Robby...we were the fortunate ones to have you as a mother that would instill strength, pragmatism, laughter and the very clear understanding that we were loved no matter what-which will now be our anchor to face tough times like this. While we never doubted your belief in all of us, we quickly found out that while we were the first 'kids', your grandkids were the ultimate joy in your life. Your pride in all the boys-Tyler, Tommy, Tanner, Ethan and your one girl-Emma-who is aptly named a jewel, was evident in every look, greeting, hug and memory you shared with them. That is the lasting legacy you have given us, above all else, love.

This memorial is to celebrate the life of Mary Lou Shipps until we can meet in person to fulfill her wishes... "All I want is an old fashioned Irish wake with family all around". It is our hope to collect your pictures, videos, memories, music, stories virtually for everyone's safety during this frustrating pandemic. We will use these posts to contact/update everyone with the details of when we will gather together in "The Forest" where all of our families' fondest memories were made. This in-person celebration will see mom united with dad and grandma by combining their ashes and sending them off with a celebration, knowing they are now together and watching over us all. Until that time, thank you for contributing to this lasting memorial and we look forward to the time when we can see you and thank you face to face.
Karol, I've gone through my box of pictures and found these few (scans). The clarity leaves much to be desired. I can send you the originals if you like, and perhaps there is a wizard in your family who can do something to clean up the images. But the group photo in particular is your mom as I remember her. She always wanted to be with everyone where the action was. She was always so kind to me from the very first time Ken brought me to Colorado Springs and every time after. She could have felt like I was an intrusion in the family but I never felt anything but welcome. Her heart was that big.
I included the pictures of Ken and your grandmother at the house with the car to see if you can place the year and where we might have been for the group photo. I have no idea. I have some really nice pictures of your grandmother and of your dad and Ken if you would like to see those too.
I also found the b/w of Ken and me just before we were married, at an Elijah concert we both sang at Barrington College, and the color of Tommy that says it is from 1998. What a cute kid. Then I was shredding papers from the 1980's this morning and found the receipt from something I sent you from Phillips University. I have no idea what it was - perhaps some music at the time. It was a reminder of how easily you and I connected from early on.
What I also realized is how few pictures of the family I have. I have tons of pictures of Ken in Japan with nameless Japanese educators, pictures that are totally meaningless now. What I would cherish are pictures of all of you. Why didn't we take more pictures? If only we had known. . . . .

I cannot imagine how difficult this time is for you. I know you have so many varied emotions. I am remembering all the good times with Mary Lou when she was at her very best. Loving on her kids and grand kids. I'm keeping you in my prayers and rejoicing that Don and Mary Lou are together and in no pain.

I fondly remember Mary Lou. Karol and I were best friends in junior high and high school. I would come over frequently and Mary Lou always treated me like one of her kids. She was kind, compassionate, and fun. She was always available to take us anywhere we needed to go, to feed us when we were starving and to join in on our crazy fun. As I remember my younger days, I always remember the Shipps family. Mary Lou will be remembered and missed.

Mary Lou played a very big part of Rob Emma Ethan I lives...We all lived together and helped each other out! But she loved her grandkids so much! We will miss her very much and remember all the good times we had with each other. We loved her very much and very lucky to have had her in our lives. Mary Lou We Love You!!!

My memories of Mary Lou go back to middle school days over 60 years ago. Even in those young teenage years it was evident that family was top priority with my best 14 year old friend. The names “Johnny “ and “Punky” and Little Pammy” were often spoken and always with fondness I am not a bit surprised to learn that Don and Mary Lou’s children and grand children were always the passion of her being. Mrs O’Neal, Mary Lou’s mom, kept us in line , but seemed to enjoy keeping her cute daughter's clothes perfect. Starching her “petticoats “ with sugar water so they made Mary Lou’s skirts thrill when she danced at the sock hops we used to go to. She was fun and caring ! So many fond and funny memories! Thank you, dear Debbie, for letting me know of your sweet mom’s passing. The years melted away and the old connnection is vivid in
my mind. She raised wonderful children

Mary Lou was the best sister-in-law anyone could ever have. When Ken and I married there was never anything but "Welcome to the family, Charlotte" where Mary Lou was concerned. Her heart was big and loving, making room in her family and her world for me. As we later learned both of the brothers we loved had Alpha-one Antitrypsin enzyme deficiency, she became my soulmate as we navigated the hardest years of their lives and ours. Great joy and great sorrow in this life, but now for her, only joy. I will be forever grateful to have Mary Lou Shipps in my life. Thank you, Mary Lou, and I will always love you. Charlotte
