Carpe Diem!

Biographie

Mary Francis Barnett Noosinow will always be remembered as an incredible force of nature with an indomitable spirit. Her life embodied her motto, Carpe Diem, "seize the day". We will miss her intellect, fierce passion and her delightful sense of humor.

The daughter of James Andrew Barnett and Mary Catherine Glos, Mary Francis Barnett was born November 22, 1934 in Washington, D.C., spending her childhood and adolescent years in Danville, Virginia. Tragedy to her family came early as her father passed away in 1937 from Leukemia when Mary was only three. As a widow, her mother would move to Attleboro, MA for better job opportunities to support their family. Mary would finish Attleboro High School in 1952.

Then in 1954 at 21 years of age she dared to reach for her dreams. Gathering her funds and without telling her mother, she paid her way to fly from Providence, RI to LaGuardia Airport in New York. Mary was vying with the many hopeful young women ambitiously seeking the life of world travel.  Interviews were being held with the prestigious Pan American World Airways, a pioneering airline and first to fly worldwide.

Of course, Mary landed the job. The Pan American training young women had to undergo was rigorous. Back then called stewardesses, these young women were schooled in charm, etiquette, cooking, languages, appropriate dressing, VIP handling and many other rules set forth by Pan American World Airways. A further requirement in those years: one had to be attractive. Pan Am stewardesses then set the standard all others attempted to emulate.

Mary was then assigned Pan Am routes to Europe, the Middle East and Africa. At one point she was based in West-Berlin, where Americans had the air-rights and Pan Am operated a hub.

Stewardesses were glamorous women during those early days. Attractive and beautifully uniformed, they were personified elegance. Long layovers meant they could experience the cities they flew to. Pan Am stewardesses did see the world. However, the job was also demanding. They were expected to remain gracious and keep their countenance in stressful situations. They had to cook when assigned to first class. Those were eggs made in a frying pan. There were no microwaves on board. She even served Eleanor Roosevelt who at the time flew coach with the people.

It was in Istanbul, Turkey that she would meet her future husband, Jerry Noosinow, a Pan American flight engineer.  In 1958, they discovered the Lake Mohawk community of Sparta Township. This lake town located in northern New Jersey was a popular homebase for many in the airline industry due the close proximity to Newark, Laguardia and JFK airports.

Mary fell in love with this village called Sparta and soon became a mother with the birth of Lisa and thirteen months later her son, David. She fully immersed herself in many aspects of the community. She acted in the local theater, Magic Mountain.  She had a passion for photography which led to converting a spare room into a darkroom to develop pictures. To this day we still share those black and white pictures of the 1972 Lake Mohawk Red Devils and Sparta Warriors. She used her talents for fundraising for the teams, setting up her table full of action photos to sell to the parents at the next game. Seeing a lack of places for teenagers in the sixties she worked with others to create the creative space “The Barn”, a safe place for kids to hang.

Our home was always the place where all our friends wanted to hangout.  She loved sharing herself with our friends. If someone was having trouble at home, they were welcome at our house. Mom gained the moniker “the cool Mom”

Her love of cooking blossomed in this small town setting starting with her passion for Julia Child and French cooking. But Mary didn’t stop there. There was a Time Life series at the time with each volume devoted to a particular country's cuisine. We can remember our childhood through the variety of food cuisines she taught herself. Mexican, Mediterranean, Thai and let’s not forget the seven course Chinese banquet with whole fish. She would host huge parties back then of 50-60 people and loved entertaining her friends from around the lake or down at the Jersey Shore. Food was definitely her love language throughout her lifetime.

Eventually, Mary would move to Ft. Lauderdale. In 1979, Pan Am would gain the right to have tour groups going into China forming their World Tours division. The airline put in the call to their past stewardess to come and join them by leading these first tours into China. Mary was ready and embraced the opportunity to travel and adventure again.

Pan American World Tours eventually went out of business, and she continued her tour guide work with Club Universe. She had great fun helping people experience China in the most positive way. After divorcing, Mary would establish herself in Los Angeles, CA and continue her adventures in the travel industry.

She then moved away from tour guiding and got a job with the wholesale travel company InterPacific Tours International and rose to Vice President of Sales (1984 - 1995). She was a sponge for knowledge and immersed herself in every culture this company and following companies would expose her to. She became top expert in her field, all the while battling four significant bouts with cancer from 1999 to 2022. Nothing stopped Mary. When asked how she manages all of that travel, trade shows (alone) and selling, she just smiled and said “I rely on the kindness of others”. And in turn, she herself was always ready to help others when needed whether it was in a work situation or personally.

With her experience gleaned from InterPacific and then Pacific Delight Tours (1996 - 2008). Even later trying her hand partnering and starting her own small concierge travel business. By the last portion of her career she had traveled to China close to 100 times coupled with many trips to India, Thailand, most of Asia.  She globe-trotted around Europe as well with Italy holding a special place in her heart. And all along the way meeting and befriending people around the world.

In 2012, Mary found her final work family with SITA World Tours. There she flexed her skills creating custom travel itineraries. She was especially proud of their work on specialized Women’s Travel opportunities. She finally retired in November of 2021. Mary was sad to leave her work family and friends but ready for that well deserved time to devote to family. She continued to be a member of World Wings International, the philanthropic organization of former Pan Am flight attendants, Skal Los Angeles and Prost.

In addition to her achievements in her travel career, she was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She showed the family the world, every trip would include a culinary lesson in that country. Each grandchild was taken on a special individual trip with Grammy to China when they reached twelve years old. Many meals at home were prepared with flavors from around the world.  Laughter and love filled the kitchen with experiments in cuisine and fancy new cocktails.

Mary is survived by her son, David Noosinow, her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Jim Rule plus three granddaughters Averi Noosinow and Andrea and Amber Rule.

We welcome Mary’s friends across the globe to share their experiences of Mary and contribute to this memorial site through pictures and stories. We will keep this site up and when missing her the most treasure these heartfelt tales.

So sad to hear this news. I knew Mary through World Wings International, the philanthropic organization of former Pan Am Flight Attendants, and the various trips we made together as Pan Am China Tour leaders in 1979. We lost touch over the years, but found each other again many years later here on Facebook. I shall miss the fun exchanges we had and send my heartfelt condolences to the family.

After all the stories about Mary’s adventures and the love she inspired in her family, I only wish I had met her more than once. That said, it is 100% clear that she lived and loved so well that she will live on as her children and grandchildren pay forward what she taught them. Prayers and love - jill

Norma, she so loved World Wings. I took her to the convention in San Diego. So many women from the long Pan Am history. It was a blast to be her date. I went to the meeting with her and I'll always remember the quote from the leader that day. I'm paraphrasing but it was something like
"Remember ladies, cover the earth before the earth covers you." Mom and I thought that was so funny and so true. I thin the only continents mom didn't travel to extensively were South America and Antarctica. What a life! Thank you for sharing.

My heart goes out to the family for your loss, it has to be tremendous. Mary lived life to the fullest and cherished her family and especially the travel adventures you all took together! I have had some great trips with Mary too, but our favorite story happened In Shanghai, a long time ago when the country was just opening up and taxis were non-existing, and the weather had turned and we wanted to get back to the hotel quickly. She convinced a truck driver to give us a ride back to the hotel, and we sat in the back of the truck with the turnips! She was always industrious and great at finding creative solutions! I will miss Mary, my she RIP.

Marlene and I were so grateful that we were able to spend time with Mary at our wedding and on mothers day weekend this year. She also planned our honeymoon trip to France and I can't even tell you how many times Marlene and I would be working on our computers together and I would hear Marlene say "this women is so with it, she's amazing", and of course she was referring to Mary. She put us up in this absolutely amazing place in Vouvray France, a 16th century chateau that bordered on a wine vineyard. I remember thinking to myself "How does she know about this place?". Clos du Gaimont will always have a special place in our heart when we return there next year and every year after as it will remind us of a place that only Mary could have introduced to us. She will live on in our hearts and every trip to France will be our opportunity to pay tribute to her.

Mom had such a wonderful time at the wedding. She was so funny afterwards, that you would take the time to walk her to her seat made such a big impression. "But it is Mike's wedding day and he took the time to walk with me." It was so special to her. And, we won't forget that special moment when you did a special tribute to mom at your reception, dubbing her "the Cool Mom". Her mouth dropped open and she turned to me and said "Is Mike talking about me?" "Yes, mom. Yes he is." On the ride home of course with our somewhat dark humor she commented "You know, I was so happy to hear the things Mike said about me. Lisa, you don't get to hear comments like that because usually your dead. (Forgive the dark humor, but hey, it is our family way."

Then you and Marlene came up for Mother's Day and mom and I had such fun with Marlene in the kitchen. It was very special. Thank you for taking the time to share.

I felt such profound sense of loss when I learnt that Mary was no more. May her Soul rest in peace.
I first met Mary in Kunming at the China Travel Mart more than 20 years ago. I was seated next to her on a bus and we conversed like old friends. I learnt so much from her that I will always remember, but most of all her work ethic and willingness to share her knowledge and experience. She was truly one of a kind! She leaves behind an enviable legacy of friends in whose memory she will always fondly abide.

I feel as if I knew her even though I've never met her. We became acquainted because I was creating a trip called the Moses Trail....she was so patient and kind with all my mistakes, she encouraged me to don't give up...I learned so much from her, it's saddens my heart to hear she is gone...but her spirit will linger on in my heart. I shall miss calling her by mistake because I had her direct number, and we would talk and she would ask how everything was going. It sadden me when she retired because I wouldn't get to talk about travel with her, but now she's a moment in my life that I will always cherish and remember her with a smile.....RIP Mary

Dear Family of Mary, my condolences for your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Mary for the past 10 years. I first met her on the bus ride to our company Christmas party to Paso Robles. After our first conversation, I knew she was really going to be a wonderful addition to the SITA World Tours family. Her knowledge and passion for travel was outstanding! We worked together on several groups to Africa and the Middle East. She was always on the look out for new and amazing experiences for our clients. Always so patient and understanding of every travelers needs - she wanted everyone to really just have the trip of a lifetime. Mary you are a true GEM in our industry - it was an honor to know you and work together for so many years. Even during those busy times when I would email or call you after hours or the weekend - you would say, don't worry about this now, go and ENJOY YOUR FAMILY ! She knew the importance of balancing career and family - and I really loved reading the bio about her younger years. I can see her being the mom to everyone and bringing her community together wherever she was.

I will miss you dearly Mary, may you rest in peace.

My lasting memory of Mary will always be when a group of us were walking away from the outdoor venue at The Ranch (Laguna Beach) following Mike and Marlene’s wedding this past March 25th. Many were headed to the parking lot and/or to their hotel room for the night and although Mary was the most senior of the group, she had a different plan—- > While getting some walking assistance from her daughter Lisa, my wife and I overheard Mary instruct Lisa, with a youthful exuberance, to “head inside to the bar”… After all, there was reason for the party to continue- It was not only Mike and Marlene’s wedding, but Noose’s birthday, as well as Marlene’s birthday and for Mary that meant the celebration wasn’t over.

To Mary’s family, my deepest and heartfelt condolences. Your Mom was a beautiful soul and loved by all.
I met Mary about 10 years ago at Canale Salon in Beverly Hills. From that point on we seemed to be on the same hair schedule! I always loved our conversations every 6 weeks, even if it was just a few minutes. The breadth of knowledge and stories Mary would tell made me excited when my gray hair came in more frequently because it meant I got to spend a few minutes with Mary. What truly touched my heart was during the pandemic, Mary would tune in to my brothers online shows of the Beatles and John Lennon. She graciously would support his efforts because she knew the joy it was bringing people throughout that trying time. She never met my brother, but always shared on her social media of his upcoming shows. My last post on Facebook with Mary was July 24th. I told her I missed seeing her at the hair salon. She told me she decided to go natural and that she missed me too. I am so fortunate to have had all those special moments with Mary. I will forever miss seeing her at our hair appointments, and maybe one day I will go au natural because Mary did. ❤️

As a young teenager, I remember Mary standing in her kitchen as I was watching Monty Python for the very first time on the small television set she had in her kitchen. I stood wide eyed and bewildered as I tried to comprehend this very foreign and strange humor. Gradually, I began to chuckle, and then I began to laugh hilariously.

I also remember having a great curiosity about her dark room where she would develop her photos. It was all quite new and glamorous. Many of the photos were of us playing little league football. She made us feel like sports stars.

Both of these memories capture the worldliness and glamour of a woman who had traveled the world with Pan Am and who also deeply loved her children, and also those of us who were fortunate to be called friends. She introduced us to new perspectives and an awareness of the greater world around us.

Mary never lost her love of travel, and of learning and experiencing other cultures. She continued to travel herself and helped others to do so as well. Many years later and just this past June, she was kind enough to help us with getting tickets to Wimbledon during a business trip that took us through London.

Mary raised two wonderful children, David & Lisa, in a loving community, Lake Mohawk in Sparta, NJ, that was geared toward raising children and enjoying the great outdoors. In addition, this community had many pilot families who shared many of the same experiences that Mary had. She remarked years later that because of those shared experiences, those families often gravitated toward each other. Many of us in the next generation are only now realizing the profound impact that world perspective had upon us over these many years. While having a worldly perspective was important, friends and family and shared experiences were valued most highly. That was Mary's legacy to us. And for that, we are very grateful.

Bon voyage, Mary. We will remember you always.

Mary, you were not supposed to leave us. I spoke with you last Friday and you were smart and funny, as you always had been over the last ten years we all worked together. I learned so much from you.
I perceived your elegance and refinement having come from an earlier time but you were not old. Your interest in and understanding of current events was present and up-to-date and I enjoyed our occasional bantering on public sphere ongoings. You were wise in so many ways.
You sharing those early times at Pan Am was one of my favorites.
I love seeing those photos on your memorial site. Especially your 1955 graduating class photo in the lower lounge level of the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser. Who remembers those air planes? Who remembers what air-travel was like then?
You would laugh, when I would say that Pan Am stewardesses set the world standard in those years - and then came South West and changed the equation.
China and Italy were 'Mary-destinations'. There were others but these two were closest to your heart. I had been to both but would draw on your knowledge regardless. Your love for countries and cultures was wondrous. You were curious but never judgmental. How I envy you.
Godspeed Mary. May your spirit fly free over the lands and oceans and the earth you loved so much. Your friend forever - Ralf
