Born in Boston and raised mainly in North Carolina interspersed with years in Philadelphia and France, Marty was a unique and freethinking leader, advocating for equality as a teen. She attended University of Michigan, receiving a BA in 1974. She moved to Boston where she was hired as a project secretary at Abt Associates of Cambridge. Her work conducting field interviews of parents of children with developmental disabilities led to a lifelong interest in advocating for services for people in need.
Marty received her PhD from Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management in 1981, joined the faculty in 1984, and became a tenured professor. There she worked with Gunnar and Rosemary Dybwad, leaders of the burgeoning movement for deinstitutionalizing services for developmentally disabled, eventually serving as director of the Nathan and Toby Starr Center on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities at Brandeis and chairperson of the Massachusetts Governor’s Commission on Mental Retardation under Governor Dukakis.
Marty’s contributions included over 75 publications highlighted by one of the earliest NIH grant-funded longitudinal studies on developmental disabilities. Her work led to social policy advancements in Massachusetts which became a model for the nation with support service frameworks that were replicated across the country.
Marty received many awards for her pioneering research and advocacy for families of people with developmental disabilities. Of note, Marty was awarded the prestigious Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation Future Leaders Award in 1990 and served on the Board of Directors for Special Olympics International from 1992-2002. For many years, Marty worked closely with the Kennedy family, helping them shape their programs to aid people with developmental disabilities.
Her career evolved as she was asked to join the senior administration at Brandeis, first serving as associate dean for faculty and academic programs at the Heller School. From 2003 to 2011, she was Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at the university. After a brief retirement, Marty returned to Brandeis as interim dean of the Heller School from 2014-2017.
During her impressive career, she raised 3 children in Brookline with her husband, Richard Krauss, founding principal of Arrowstreet Inc. Architects and Planners. Marty became a pillar of the community both in Brookline and on the Brandeis campus. A southern belle who found her calling and made her home in the greater Boston area, Marty’s preternatural leadership and consensus building skills led to many requests to join community-based organizations, and just as often, she obliged with a smile. Marty was President of Brookline’s Cottage Farm Neighborhood Association and held legendary cookouts and holiday parties. She was the glue that bonded many communities and the easy-going originator of many traditions that persist today.
She was noted for her hospitality and warm smile, always curious about others and their lives. She impacted everyone she spent time with, especially mentoring the women around her to be independent and brave. She was, herself, an authentic, kind, and bold woman who reached the height of her professional and personal life through merit, fierce advocacy, and an oft-cited ability to “bring a group to consensus” through pragmatic optimism, persuasion and charm.

Marty was a remarkable scientist, administrator, and person. Throughout the four decades that I knew her as a colleague and a friend, I admired her commitment to the field of psychology, in general, and developmental disabilities, in particular. She mentored students who became colleagues, and colleagues who became friends. She will be greatly missed by the hundreds of colleagues who knew and admired her and her contributions to our field.

It has been a year since I wrote this original tribute, and it reminds me again of how much Marty has been missed by those who knew her as a colleague and a friend, as well as those whose work was enriched by her work.

We were saddened to hear of Marty's loss. My heartfelt sympathy to her family. One of her major contributions was in regard to the waiting list for services faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities at the state agency now known as the Department of Developmental Services. It serves as a model for how academic work can be relevant and result in positive public policies. Marty guided research on this waiting list through her graduate student, Diane Griffiths. The result was: "Waiting in the Wings" which documented the struggle of adults and their families. Marty also played a key role in the publication of the state agency's report on this pressing policy issue, as well as facilitating three-years of funding to begin "Family to Family" hosted at The Arc of Massachusetts. This is but one area where she has left a lasting imprint.

I never knew Marty personally but I have learned a great deal FROM her through stories. In judaism, the ultimate form of charity is to support someone by endowing them with a gift or loan, or entering into a partnership with them, or finding employment for them, in order to strengthen their hand so that they will not need to be dependent upon others. From the tributes here and in her son Dave with whom I work, it seems Marty lived this mantra and is still paying it forward. How rich!

Marty was a woman who made me feel solid in who I am. She smiled and hugged me, she spoke to me in a way that all women who give me strength, speak to me. She was a woman who demonstrated fearless leadership and gave me a chance to be a leader.

I am so sad to hear that our beloved Marty has passed away. I am also so grateful that Marty has been an important part of my life and a wonderful colleague/friend. Marty was so helpful and supportive to me personally and professionally during my Heller doctoral studies and my academic career at Boston University School of Social Work.
I admire how strong, open, and honest Marty was, even as she dealt with the challenges of her advanced cancer. I will always remember Marty’s warm smile, strength, and elegance. May these memories be a blessing to all who knew and loved her.

Marty was an exceptional mentor to me and I will forever be grateful. Along with Marsha Mailick, she mentored me through my post-doctoral fellowship and early academic career. I learned how to have exceptionally high standards for research and dissemination, and then had the opportunity to see her administrative acumen. I was fortunate to be invited to a few holiday parties and remember those joyous times vividly. Marty was far too young for her journey to end. My heart goes out to her family. May you treasure your memories and find peace in each other's comfort.

I first met Marty many years ago when she was working with Elinor Gollay on landmark national research projects. Since then I've followed her impressive career and her many contributions. Marty has a special place in my heart not only as the first person I met when I arrived in the States but mostly for the warm welcoming she had bestowed on me and my family. She opened her heart and home to us along with her ever present big smile. Over the years, as we raised our children, had family outings, holiday parties and personal luncheons, I got to know and love Marty as the open, direct and down to earth woman that she was. What I didn't know was that Marty was also extremely humble. She talked about work demands among other things but never about her immense professional achievements. What a very special person indeed. I feel blessed to have known her.

For 16 years I was the Project Manager for two of Marty’s large studies about family caregiving over the life course. It was my privilege to interview parents in their homes and hear about the joys as well as the challenges they faced as they grew older. Marty viewed each and every study participant as an individual with a gift of knowledge and experience that needed to be heard. To me, Marty was first and foremost a teacher and mentor. From Ph.d candidates to work-study students, she taught us all something we will never forget about life, discipline, and setting goals. To all who knew her, she will never be forgotten

As Budget Systems person who worked or collaborated with the Brandeis schools and centers and institutes, I had very pleasant and productive relationship with Marty. She was approachable, knowledgeable, and easy to work with. She would even spend time asking about my family. She was a great Dean, Provost and person.

I first met Marty when I joined a committee she co-chaired. During one of the meetings, I made a comment along the lines of "well, doing that would be pretty retarded." Marty took me to task, and she was right. From then on, we collaborated closely to advance the committee's work. And it was so easy working with Marty! She was smart, knowledgeable, compassionate, and sensible. She was formidable.
I was thrilled when she was named Provost and made another comment along the lines of "well, now you must drink from the poisoned chalice." This time she laughed.
While I ache at the news and my eyes well up, I am grateful to have had the chance to know her and work with her. Her memory will live forever in those that appreciate her and let her memory imbue our future actions.

I was so sad to hear this news about Marty. Marty was an amazing, woman, scientist, and leader. We first met when our sons were in preschool and then reconnected years later through our mutual research interests in autism, disabilities research and collaborated on an NIH funded project together. Marty was a beautiful and strong person - she loved her family, her work and the many families whose lives she touched with her work. I wish I had stayed in contact in recent years. Jana, I am so sorry for your loss. Marty was a special young girl and grew into an awesome woman with a heart of gold. So warm, open and caring. We shared so many sweet, fun, play times & pajama parties as young girls in the Trinity Park neighborhood into DHS, then again at our 40th reunion when she opened up sharing about her family and work. So many of us at George Watts through DHS were blessed to have known her and to have called her a friend. Please know, she will live forever in our memories. Marty was like a second mom to our son Alex who was the same age as her son Jake. We have so many great memories of sharing family events, sporting events, church services, and holidays with Marty and her family. While we moved away nearly 20 years ago, Marty and her family have never been far away in our hearts.

I remember meeting Marty for the time. I had flown in from California and Richard took me aside and said “there is someone I want you to meet.” The rest is history.
Many years later when I expressed interest in the Wyngaarden family history, Marty made a point to send me the wonderful book her father wrote. When we came to Boston she showed us around. Our family gatherings have always been special and time on the Cape has been amazing. Terri and I send our love.

The koff family has many, many fond memories of Marty and the Krauss family. Marty’s leadership as a Lawrence parent helped steer our community through some challenging times in the schools leadership. The barbecues kept parents and siblings in a strong sense of safety and community. In spite of the many professional responsibilities and health challenges Marty had a wonderful smile that we will always hold dear. We extend our condolences to the Krauss family.
