I am saddened to hear of the death of this remarkable person. I knew Mark when we went to high school together at Littlefork Big Falls High School in northern Minnnesota. We reconnected in 2012 when his book, “My Mother is Now Earth” was published and he did a reading at The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis. His book opened my mind and heart. My heartfelt condolences to all his dearest ones.

Mark's book "My Mother is Now Earth" would be a great read for anyone who has been touched by childhood poverty, racism or alcoholism. His reflection and writing style draw out thought and appreciation for all the millions of people that have endured those realities. Mark used his hard times to help others be aware of the battles going on around us all at all times.
Those of us that grew up knowing Mark in the childhood school years remember him as always being kind. A kindness that everyone should have as a daily routine. Through it all, remain kind.
And Hey Mark!! Just so you know, and you Know all now that you are in Heaven, dancing is NOT a sin!! Square Dance with Jesus and the Spirit!!
Thank you for being you Mark Rolo. Amen.

Rock Springs. That is where Mark Anthony and I last gathered. He, Pat, Nick and I shared lunch on the deck; threw our watermelon rinds over the railing. "My Mother is Now Earth" captures the family story and shows the depth of Mark's writing/living; I saw him deservedly receive a State of Minnesota writers award for this book. We shared tears over Rock's death. As Andrea wrote, beers were shared, and more. So many stories; so many memories. Bye Mark Anthony.

I worked with Mark Anthony 25 years ago, producing his play about "Indians" coping with White culture. It was a very funny play; I can't remember the title, but I can remember a punch line. A native woman aspires tp living in Woodbury, and she and her Native husband don't make enough money. So share tries to seduce a White professor whom she thinks has the key. She tells her husband, "How do you expect this marriage to work if I can't have the men that I want?" A powerful searching intellect, a deep soul.

I met Mark when I worked for The Progressive magazine. We fell into an easy friendship and ended up having some wonderful adventures together. We taught a college class, argued about the world over hundreds of pitchers of beer, Mark taught me how to bake bread, and much more. The world was just brighter and more vibrant with Mark in it, and I'll miss him the rest of my life while at the same time hearing his voice in my ear, laughingly mocking, teasing and instructing. <3

My condolences to Mark Anthony's family and friends. I initially reached out to him concerning Nick. At some point I learned about his documentary, A Seat at the Drum which he co-facilitated a discussion after showing it at the 2008 Wisconsin Indian Education Association annual conference in Madison. I also took one of his classes at UW Madison. Of course there was his creation of Wicked Ancestors. Good guy and I know he'll be missed.

Mark was definitely one of my favorite brothers. We were just a year apart so naturally we were very close throughout our growing up years in northern Minnesota. I always marveled at his outgoingness and confidence to succeed in anything except maybe mathematics! He left this earth with so many friends and accomplishments. Journalism was his passion and I believe God his strength. I will miss him.

I was very saddened to hear of Mark’s passing. I met the Rolo family in Big Falls- I reconnected with Mark in Washington DC - we shared a great evening of stories and memories of Big Falls. I had no idea he had noted my family in his book- we laughed and cried together. His talent to express the ordinary life struggles opens the heart, eyes and mind to finding the beauty in the common place.

Rolo family, Sorry to hear about Mark's death. My family and I used to live down the road from you when we lived outside of Big Falls. We rode the same bus route throughout our high school years. Mark was a special person.
