Linda "Tusi" Gannon (née Hidalgo, formerly Spong) passed away suddenly in the early morning of June 5 after a brief struggle with a blood infection at age 72. Linda was a child of East Los Angeles, a founding member of the Greenpeace "Save the Whales" campaigns of the 1970's, a lifelong activist for human and ecological dignity, a lover of animals, children, real estate, music and pottery. She rolled the dice. She refused to let where she started to define where she ended. While she loved Canada and planned to stay, she always advised keeping two sets of papers and one eye on the border. Her beauty and spirit broke many hearts, and in her youth, she was pursued by men from every walk of life. She chose to remain faithful to her final love, her husband Bill, for more than 40 years. They were inseparable and he gave her unencumbered happiness. While Linda was coy on the topic of God, she communed with the dead freely and often, which is perhaps why she slipped so easily between the worlds. She is survived by her husband Bill; ex-husband Paul; her children Yasha (and his wife Brandy), Maureen and Patrice; grandchildren Hannah, Amelia, Nathanael, Josephine; and great-grandchildren Indica and Zephyr. Rest in peace.

Tusi was such an amazing Aunt. I can remember when my cousins and I were younger, she was always so sweet to us, sneaking us little treats when we weren't expecting them. I was lucky enough to have spoken to her very recently, and she sent me pictures of a beautiful deer that had come to visit, and we discussed our love of cats. She was a great conversationalist and such an interesting person. I'll miss her very much and my heart aches for Bill and my cousins. A tremendous loss for the family...

Almost a year ago I met Mo Gannon, and after our first meeting, we started calling each other “Cousin” due to the similarities in our names. Today, I got a call from Mo and she started the conversation with Hi cousin.
I never met Linda, but I see and feel her in her daughter Mo, and when I knew she founded the Greenpeace “Save the whales” campaign it sparked in my mind, the secret behind the kindness of the Mo i know which can only be inherited from of a women whose kindness has surpassed humanity toward whales in the deep oceans. This is a legacy that can’t easily built and will be always admired and remembered.
Rest in Paradise Linda. I’m sure you are in better place now. and my heart is with you Mo and my extended Canadian family ♥️

So grateful for all the amazing memories! Much love to Bill and the family. I feel so blessed to of known Linda. She was a huge support for me in getting me to go outside my comfort zone and believed in me. I know she is still protecting our waters and spending some time with her beloved whales. I heard some many great things about Linda and I'm so sorry for your loss. Though I've never met her in person, but I do appreciate the fact that she was a co-founder of Greenpeace's "save the whales" campaign which I found fascinating as a child and even wrote a paper once in elementary school about the topic. Thank you Linda and thank you Mo for telling all about such a beautiful soul.
She sounds like a wonderful woman and although she's not here, her memory will surely stay alive through the wonderful stories that you'll be telling me for years to come.

Linda was the first person I interviewed for a book on the Maplewood Mudflats community of squatters in the sixties and early seventies. I will never forget visiting her and Bill at their house in Vancouver--after having watched with them the tanker trackers in their office, as they kept tabs on the heavy shipping traffic through Vancouver waters. Linda generously shared with me her memories of her days as "Tusi," living in a shack with Paul and their son Yashi. Her vivid stories shaped the way I came to understand life on the North Shore mudflats. I was thrilled when she came to a reading I gave from the finished book last year--here is a photo of Linda and Bill at the bookstore with me. I also have photos of her "from the day"--and of their shack--but can only seem to put one picture up here. I am deeply saddened by the thought of her early death--a light gone out far too early. The tribute to her is beautiful.

Tusi's sing-song voice is ringing in my mind. I keep listening to the last birthday song she and Dad left me on WhatsApp - their two-part harmony, with him on ukulele, that they performed for me no matter where I was each year. "Hey Mo," she sing-songs after it, "we're really looking forward to seeing you soon!" Tusi was always "really looking forward" to something. Always had ideas for how we could have some fun. She was a woman of endless enthusiasms: saving the whales, playing her fiddle, making her pottery, running marathons (then triathlons), taking care of her dogs, checking in on her kids and grandkids, and above all, my dad. It was a gift to be loved by her. It's hard to imagine the silence where her voice used to be, so I'm just going to keep imagining her voice filling the silence.

I am very sorry for your lost. As you know i have also lost my mom recently and thanks to you introducing me to the birds where i strongly belive that they carry spiritual message that is comforting me when i sit alone. Matter of fact i am hearing them now as i am typing this. I wish i could have met her but i am sure my mom is lucky now that they will both meet in heaven and look down at us being proud how good people we became.
My condolences, and here i remind you to look at the birds and feel the sound they make i am sure it should make you feel better like how it did to me.

Mo this is beautiful - I’m so very sorry for your loss. She sounds like an amazing woman who led quite a brilliant life. I hope you can take some of her strength of character that she clearly had to help you through this shitty situation.
