In Loving Memory of Dr. Kelvin Liu Kam Wing
Kelvin was a Paediatric surgeon, filial son, devoted brother, loving uncle and grand-uncle, kung-fu martial artist and tai chi master. He was always gentle, diligent, caring, affectionate, honest, full of humour and a generous figure to all who knew him. We invite everyone who knew Kelvin to share their stories and memories of him, illuminating his valour and perseverance in life. He was the son of Liu Chut and Chan Wai Chun. He was a graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland followed by working experience in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and Hong Kong. He held Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Australia and Fellowships of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.
Kelvin provided his services in a number of hospitals and universities in Hong Kong, and he established a Paediatric Surgical Centre. To Kelvin, every patient was important. He gave hope and happiness to so many families. Kelvin was instrumental in the development of paediatric minimal invasive surgery and paediatric liver transplantation in Hong Kong. In addition, he pioneered the establishment of the multidisciplinary clinical service for the management of cleft lip and palate in Hong Kong. Kelvin was devoted to his profession and served as Chairman of the Board of Paediatric Surgery of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong. He nurtured junior trainees who became consultant surgeons in various surgical subspecialties.
Kelvin devoted his whole life caring for his parents and his siblings; his family meant everything to him. He is survived by his brother Tim and his sisters Eva, Anita, Joanne, Vivian, Chialina and Edna, and other family members, who all loved, adored and looked up to him. What a great brother and doctor he was. His loss is beyond words. He will be with us in our hearts forever. May he rest in peace together with his late parents and his sister Helena whom he loved very much. Vigil will be held on November 25 at 6:30 pm at the Universal Funeral Parlour, Hung Hom, Hong Kong

Kelvin my dear brother, your sudden departure sent ripples in my mind. I never thought I would need to write on your memorial page, but reality is still the eternal truth. What was instantly available is now impossibility; your advice to me, your demeaner, devotion to family and many many others…. trickles of memories, no matter how small, would forever stay in my mind.
We grew up together in Mong Kok, street city boys we were then. We fought, laughed, trained and all the good times we enjoyed. I looked up to you as the good brother who always protected me. You left for Ireland in my early childhood, and the next time we met was when you were my clinical tutor in Temple Street Children’s Hospital. You were a born-to-be doctor and inspired many of us to follow your career footsteps. Yet you had set such a tall order and us finding it so hard to get level with. You were really a peoples’ person and you struck the best balance between career achievement and friendship; I can feel this from the number of good friends you have.
You cared so much for the family and your devotion to the family was unconditional. You had shouldered such a heavy task all your life looking after our parents, my late sister and at the same time, the health of all family members. I am needle-phobic, the moment when I opened my eyes coming out of anaesthesia, your smiling face was there to greet me. I was really touched but I never told you as I thought that was not my style. I wish I had. My dearest brother, I really miss you. You always said we were the only brother to each other in our lives. Yes, we are.

He is my uncle, my role model, my mentor. He is, and always will be, a key member in Paediatrics and Paediatric Surgery. His accomplishments along with his dedications and contributions toward the medical field will forever be remembered.
I miss you dearly, Uncle Kelvin. I cherish all of the moments I have had with you. From the weekly jogs we had by the promenade to the many gym sessions we shared with one another. It has been an honour to be by your side. I will remember every philosophical thought and every single life lesson you have shared with me.
You have guided me through life and helped me become the man I am today. My interest in medicine and passion in mixed martial arts all started from you. You taught me medicine beyond what a textbook could teach. You showed me what it meant to have a caring heart. You even taught me how to throw my very first punch. I sincerely hope that I have made you proud.
You are a true hero and you have made a huge impact in this world! Rest in peace, Uncle Kelvin. Your legacy lives forever! I love you.

Dearest 舅父，I’m still shocked that you are actually gone. I always knew that you were a great doctor, but the impact you had made to others’ lives was way beyond my imagination. I regret that we never had a chance to have intimate talks after I grew up. I remember when I was little you took me for a ride in Sydney and it was just the two of us. When you were living in our home, you often told us funny things at work with your colleagues; you were always cheerful and everyone respected you. You meant a lot to us, especially to my mom. You always cared about the health of your family and made prompt arrangements to look after us. Don’t worry about the family, the younger ones will look after the elderly. May you rest in peace. You will always remain in our hearts and dreams.

Thanks Dr Liu for taking Archerlaus as your cleft patient when we first visited you due to difficulties in feeding when he was around 1 to 2 weeks old. Thanks for all your arrangements in all the surgeries for him. Thanks for your energy, your skills, your delicate hands, your patience, your care and love to Archelaus.
You look solemn at the beginning. You charm us with your professionalism, your attention to details, your care and love as well as your sense of humor. It’s both shocking and sad to know about Dr Kelvin Liu’s demise. Dr Liu has been such a great and nice person who is loved by so many people. It must have hurt so many people to know of his demise. It is Very very sad indeed for not able to see him anymore. We would remember his wonderful personality, his kindness and his contribution to Hong Kong and this world. He has lived a very productive life. He would live forever in many peoples heart whom he had taught and treated. Many of his beloved students personally would fell the greater pain of seeing this dearest mentor leaving this world. 我和廖醫生見面的機會不少，但談話的次數不多，初時感覺他為人嚴肅，漸澌地發覺他是一個和藹可親的人，當我兒子吳均，他的外甥從滑板失足擦傷，廖醫生馬上替他膊药，當吴均跳躍時扭傷，舅父急忙地找醫生替吴均檢查，當吴均耳朶發炎,舅父在自己身體不適的情況下親自駕車到醫院替他取藥，對吴均無微不至，有如親父。我亦從其他人口中知道廖醫生對所有病人也關懷盡至，使我五體投地，一位大醫師，照顧別人卻忽略了自己，他的離世，使人深感痛心，廖醫生希望你一路走好！

In Loving Memory of Dr Kelvin Liu Kam Wing
It was so sad to know our respectful Dr Kelvin Liu passed away last month. I first encountered Dr Liu when he was the President of The Hong Kong Paediatric Society in 2010, there were many doctor and nurse collaborative educational activities, such as Update Series in Child Health.
To our Paediatric nurses, Dr Liu was a devoted and great Paediatric surgeon. He was gentle, caring, passionate and kind. He loved every patient. His contribution to Paediatric Surgery was extraordinary.
As the President and on behalf of Hong Kong College of Paediatric Nursing, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to Dr Liu’s family. We wish Dr Liu rest in peace. He will be in our memories always.

Kelvin and I joined CU Surgery in the second part of 1980s. We have a lot of similarities. One of them was that we both enjoyed operating on surgical emergencies with intern as our main assistants. In our younger days in the early 1990s, we had shared our thoughts and given each other moral support in achieving professional and academic excellence. The last year or so, I was blessed with the opportunity of having long chats with Kelvin, in his good days after treatment, including surgical practice, social events, and even religion.
I missed seeing you in your final illness. But I know you have taken a naturist's view on our coming and going. We all miss you.

21/11/2020 收到 Dr Kelvin Liu (廖鑑榮醫生) 的離世訊息，實在感到突然及很不捨！
回想起認識 Dr Liu 超過20年，主要是於UCH NICU & SCBU及4C病房工作上的接觸。他是兒科外科手術聖手，而兔唇顎裂手術的精湛技術，深受 UCH 創院院長巴治安醫生 (Dr Paterson) 的傳授和影響，造福了無數的小朋友及他們的家庭。
Dr Liu 的臉上常帶著笑容，是一位西裝筆挺、斯文有禮，很有紳士風度，閒談時又和藹可親的。
沒想到 2019年9月28日在 HKCH 舉行的 Paediatric Joint Annual Scientific Meeting，是最後一次與 Dr Liu 見面！
雖然唔捨得 Dr Liu，甚至半夜沉思緬懷他差不多數小時，並尋找到這幅與一群兒科護士及UCH舊同事的大合照；在各人的同意下，送上這張照片，作為悼念我們尊敬的Dr Kelvin Liu！

Dear Kelvin,
It was so shocked and sad to know that you had left. You had been my teacher since the first day we met when I was a medical student. Thereafter, we had chance to work together in the NICU to witness your wonderful skills in paediatric surgery and your considerate and caring attitude towards patients and colleagues. Your kindness and generosity were so admirable. Thank you for your guidance, support and trust for letting me to be your Secretary during your Presidency. It has been one of the most memorable experiences for me to work with you in the Hong Kong Paediatric Society. The things that I learnt from you and all the other seniors have given me a solid foundation in both my professional and personal lives.
Life is often unpredictable and sometimes uncontrollable. But you had demonstrated a very fruitful and meaningful life with your dedications to your profession, to your patients and to your coworkers and friends. Hope you would continue the optimistic and positive attitude and rest peacefully in this life journey.

“Kok Kok Kok”....一聽到這木鞋聲，就知道是廖醫生在手術室做手術了....伴隨鞋聲而來的，一定是一張親切的笑臉。無論何時何地，廖醫生都是氣定神閒，敬業樂業，和藹可親。還記得我還是trainee 的時候，有一晚跟你收症，一齊去CT 房睇片...你不單會教我睇case, 還會和我分享工作的心得，令我獲益良多！又記得你帶我地一班人去Irish Bar 飲酒，無所不談，你的説話、你的笑聲,現在還記憶猶新....但我最記得你對我説的最後一句話：Will try to be present from the start of PAED SURG to the end in UCH....

My Dearest Uncle Kelvin
I am now eight and I have been growing up closely with you, my dearest uncle, since I was a baby. Jogging along the promenade, digging sand and hunting clams at the beach opposite home, you teaching me kung fu, holidaying ….. all these are still vivid in my mind.
I know I am a bit naughty but you have been patiently guiding and tempering me, inspiring me to be a kind-hearted doctor in future. Though I take it causally, your expectation is well in my heart.
One day, when my mom told me that you had left us to live in heaven with Aunty Helena and grandparents, I did not understand the real meaning of “losing you”. But now I think I can feel it. I waited but I didn’t see you home, I wanted to talk and share my feeling but I couldn’t reach out to you, I wanted to learn kung fu but you could teach me no more…. I realise I have indeed lost my dearest dearest…beloved uncle. I love you. I miss you. You will always be in my heart. Rest in peace!

Remember our beloved Dr. Kelvin Liu
In mid-October, I suddenly learned from Facebook that Dr. Liu had passed away and I was so shocked to hear this very sad news. I was heartbroken with consternation beyond words. In addition to my pain of losing a dear friend and great mentor, our society has also lost a master paediatric surgeon who was so passionate and has dedicated his lifetime of service to the children’s wellbeing.
I recall the time when I first met Dr. Liu at the United Christian Hospital more than 20 years ago, he was small and did not make a deep impression on me at that time, but the way we got along at work over the following few years has impressed me. I have seen many doctors with superb medical skills, but his warm smile to the sick children and their family members, his meticulous approach in explaining about the sick children’s conditions, and his self-confidence has made many family members feel positive towards the success of the operation, and these expectations from families were often met, so that countless children have a second chance in life. Later, Dr. Liu succeeded Dr. Edward H. Patterson in performing surgeries on children with cleft lip and cleft palate. His superb medical skills have made countless sick children and their families smile again and face their roads ahead.
During Dr. Liu’s time at United Christian Hospital, he was very much loved by his colleagues. When he did ward rounds, his colleagues were always elated because Dr. Liu was docile, very approachable and easy to talk with, and he was never hesitated to share his medical experience with his colleagues.
Life is helpless in many ways. Dr Liu, today we have to say a reluctant farewell to you. You are forever in our heart and your legacy will be remembered.

We met in UCH in 1996. Without you...I will not have opportunity to find my occupation path.Thanks for your teaching and support. I am glad to work with you. Without your support... My dearest brother Kelvin and I have been soulmates, always looking up to each other. We grew up together enjoying happy and supportive childhood. I being the eldest, and Kelvin being the eldest son in the family, we were very close, working together for the well being of our family by inheriting family-centred values. He was such an adorable brother. He flew all the way from Ireland to Montreal Canada to check on my adaptation when I was studying there, bringing me an Irish Aran wool sweater, the warmth of which and his thoughtfulness have stayed with me since. This is just one example, words can't express my gratitude for his concern and protection for me throughout.
Kelvin was a filial son and a great brother. He loved our parents and siblings very much and devoted his life for us, and I supported and subscribed to it, working together with him for whatever he meant good for us. In the process, he paid less attention to himself for which both of us have regrets; had he taken a little more care of himself, my soulmate would still be here. I do miss him dearly and would forever miss him. It seems that I have lost half of myself.
We lost our dearest and youngest sister three years ago which really hurt Kelvin and myself a lot. Now I have lost him also, in the process I have lost my way through this life.
My dearest Kelvin, rest in eternal peace! You led a meaningful life, full of passion and contribution to the family, your patients and your profession. You are our pride and we all love you. You will be in our hearts forever and forever!

Dr. Edward Paterson, the missionary surgeon and founding medical superintendent of United Christian Hospital(UCH), started the first cleft service in Hong Kong in 1973. At that time, there was only a small team of a surgeon, a speech therapist and a dentist. After his retirement in 1989, there were a gap of the aforementioned service until Dr Liu learnt three key cleft surgeries from Dr Paterson and later picked up a honorary consultant post in UCH.
In 1997, Dr Liu developed an Integrated Multidisciplinary Team. With his generous nature, approachable manner, broad vision, and professionalism, he well managed and pioneered the establishment of Multidisciplinary treatment of cleft lip and palate in Hong Kong. Few thousands of patients got treated and led new lives.
His team gradually evolved and expanded at UCH. In 2011, Dr Liu led the team to win the Hospital Authority Outstanding Team Award.
