Biographie

Grover was a loving generous father, brother, friend and life partner.  He was a plant whisperer. A lover of trees and soil and the magic of mycelia. Grover was a permaculturalist and Analog Forestry instructor in food forest farming  and regenerative agriculture.  The calming spiritual presence of his Native American flute songs graced many of our gatherings.  And, so have his favorite flavors.  Grover’s unique talent for creating warm spiced love on a plate was one of his fathers greatest gifts to him.  His illuminating nature photos gave voice to the light of life....and to that light, he returns.

While in Iowa, Grover and Mari along with a group of committed regenerative land stewards created a permaculture and biodynamic homestead, as a living template for land and resource management, sustainable agriculture and renewable energy.  They cultivated sustainable land practices on an off the grid homestead, including home-scale constructed wetlands, grey water remediation, vermi-composting, and biodynamic preparations, prescribed-burning for the benefit of indigenous prairie restoration and rain catchment for domestic water and irrigation to mixed woodland & fruit orchards. Together with community members went on to found an educational nonprofit ~ The Sustainable Living Coalition ~ continuing Grovers legacy in ecological education.

More recently, with brilliant teams of The International Association of Analog Forestry, Grover helped create curriculum and facilitated AF training practices, bridging multiple disciplines in ecology to create sustainable rural economies internationally. He led a coalition of farmers through week long intensives in woodland restoration and economy - adopting permaculture, analog forestry and biodynamic techniques and ethics.

Day to day his greatest joys were visiting with clients, who soon become best friends, together imagining & manifesting diverse lush living scapes. His soft contagious sparkle inspiring and healing soils and souls alike.

Grover was an incredible teacher- wise, patient, and dedicated to the care of the earth and his students. I
It has been 15 years since we met on my first permaculture course, and I'm just now putting into practice what he taught me. One very simple, and very important lesson that he taught me is to walk the land, every morning... Admire the beauty. Pay attention to the challenges that our plant and animal friends are facing. Create a plan for their care. Pick a flower. Trim a bush. Plant a seed. Grover, I'm gonna make some compost tea next. I'll be thinking of you my friend.

I knew Grover from the early 70's when we both lived in Washington DC and then moved to Montara CA on the Pacific ocean. We lived with a great group of people when we were all trying to figure ourselves out. Grover was the most curious one(and happiest) of our group and I was so glad to find out many years later that he had found his place. We reconnected a couple of years ago. I live north of Seattle and my son lives down by him and I was going to look him up next trip down. So sad. I will cherish my memories of our times together.

Grover has such an effortless, joyful, informed manner in moving mountains. I loved spending time with you and Grover and your rock fetching dog. My partner Susan built this house south of town. Grover would arrive 15 minutes earlier than our scheduled meeting time. He would walk around our property with the most intentional cadence. When we would greet, it seemed that he had a clear sense of what was needed on the landscape and I, with notebook in hand, would fervently write down our plan for the day. I now walk my property in the same way. Thank you Grover.

I know Grover through the Permaculture community I was encouraged to attend Penny Livingston's 1 year workshop in Bolinas, Ca.
When I completed it I went to my town, Healdsburg, Ca. and started looking online for a permaculture company to help me with my property. That's where I found Grover. Since then we co-created a regenerative functional, forever giving love food Forest at both of my properties in HGB. I see and sense him in every part of the garden. Mari said "he would say plant more flowers and trees". I will Grover. Graciously gardening, Kellie Barrow

Angela And Matt Raykowski a publié un hommage .

I am Marie's sister, and my husband is Matt Raykowski. My sister Mari is my very very smart, my smart sister whom I thought would never find a worthy partner in life, because she is sooo smart and so beautiful and so loving and wanted to do things that really mattered. When she said she was bringing a friend, I knew this individual would be larger than life wonderful. And he was. Our Grover. This wonderful man. He was so wise, so beautiful, gentle and sweet and loving. We looked up to him so much. He was home. And I was grateful for Matt to have the influence of this soulful man who would share his wisdom so humbly and I'm so grateful that it has inspired Matt to be a better man, husband and father. Matt loves to play golf, and he would take Grover golfing when Marie and Grover would visit. They would send us pictures of sunrises, deer and other animals on the greens at sunrise, and yes a little high. Grover would speak to him about the construction of grounds, plants and trees, landscapes and all these little gems of wisdom, it was lovely to see him speak. I think it awakened a whole other perspective for him, as he has for all of us. He lent us his beautiful lens how we saw life. And then we continued to use this lens. With my sisters and family, we would have these lovely dinners, plantings, so many lovely conversations, drum circles, flute playing. We planted about 30 trees and hundreds of spices and plants at our house. We are cherishing our little lime and strawberry guava trees and rosemary plants, even more and see him in them. I love to tell the story when he and Marie raced down when our sister went into labor. I think Marie thought to give her a few days of privacy and he said no, no we have to be there, it's amazing, it's a God moment, God and life and Spirit are there. It's one of the few moments in life that you're going to feel that. The energy of that moment is whoa, WHOA, so huge so much light and life and spirit in the room. That when his kids were born, were the happiest days in his life. He loved his kids so so very much. He brightened up (he was always bright in life) and he brightened up even more whenever he spoke of his kids  He is so proud of them. He also spoke of so much about his family-his sisters and cousins. He loved his whole family so much. He would expand and we would see his pictures and his family and those moments were painted in our presence too.

It's so nice to hear all these stories about Grover, the slumber parties :-)  I'm so happy that he has brought us all together. I do feel like that he is still here, that he is everywhere. We still feel him around as if he was here. We will plant many trees in his honor. And we will always hold him dear and in our present.  We have been telling so many friends and coworkers about Grover. And they are all now seeing trees in a different way. And they are so happy that we had him in our lives. And that now he was in theirs. And that is so sweet. One of my coworkers said she and her four year old are now hugging and kissing trees and looking at life in a different way. They were forgetting to remember the specialness in nature. We all do. Love to everyone. Thank you everyone for sharing these wonderful stories. Everyone has a couch or backyard to tent in if they are ever in Grand Terrace, in Southern California. Thank you, Everyone.

Grover and Marie were so important to me on so many levels. When I arrived back in Fairfield in 2006, Big Green Summer was in full swing. It was my introduction to the sustainability movement in Fairfield that has become such an important part of my life. Here’s a slideshow I made from their going away party. Rest In Peace my friend. https://vimeo.com/319331389

Dear Grover, my old friend. As you move on in your journey know that your friendship has meat the world to me. From the first time we met, I knew I had met someone special. Your generosity and loyalty to your friends never went unnoticed. Your contributions to the world of sustainable farming will be appreciated for generations of indigenous peoples. I appreciate your sense of humor, and although we might not see each other for months a a time, we would reconnect like we had only been apart for a few days. I also received much joy when Mari came into your life. You are truly kindred spirits, and I am sure that you will spend many more lifetimes together. It’s hard for me to express the love I have for you and i know we will meet again. God bless you Grover. Mari, thank you for loving my dear friend.

It was about 3 years ago. We planted potatoes on West Dry Creek. I was having family over for a picnic. I texted him to ask its time to harvest potatoes. He texted back in one word: Patience.
So now in our family if we need patience with something, we say we need potatoes!

As I received this news I was hearing the lines of a David Whyte poem: “...his heart, so long at the edge of the nest, shook its wings and flew into the hills he loved.”
Remembering last year at our retreat around this time, Grover patiently shepherding our group process into corralling our theme for the year, “Rooting down and branching out- embracing sacred connections.” He brought many blessings. Love and gratitude.

Grover did much good for BDANC during his years on the steering committee and it was an honor to serve with him. He was always there when something needed to be done. And he would do it in an adroit yet understated way. He was a passionate advocate for the trees and soil and world at large. And he was a great cross pollinator, bringing in threads from many allied movements and approaches.
I see him and hear him now in my mind's eyes and ears, joyfully playing his flute at the many BDANC meetings we attended together. He seemed most at peace then so I will hold those images of him during this time.

Love,
Delmar

Dearest Marie,

Sion and I are deeply saddened by the news of Grover's passing. We are sending you our deepest condolences and support during these coming days/weeks/months. I had a really good cry yesterday, feeling his presence and his contribution to the world.

Marie, I just want to tell you how much we adore you and Grover. And for the times we had together. Such fond memories, that are forever ingrained in our hearts and minds.

I know the tremendous love you had for each other, for your community of friends and family and for the Earth. This love will help get you through these hard times. Stay strong dear sister.

We are sending you so much love and support from afar and know that you have the love and support close by too.

I realise that you will be inundated with messages, so please don't feel obliged to write back. I will write again later, hopefully when things are more calm on your end and maybe we can have a call some time to catch up.

Big hugs and much much love,
Trudy and Sion (and Maia)

I had no idea he was battling cancer and am saddened with the news of his passing. Grover was a kind, generous and welcoming soul. I think you coined the term “Uncle Grover” and that might be the most accurate way to describe him. He provided a sense of calm in times of anxiety, reassurance in times of uncertainty, and leadership when it was needed. He treated everyone with dignity, respect, and kindness. He cared for the individual. I learned a lot during my time at Permaculture Artisans and Grover provided a substantial part of that knowledge. We need more Grovers, lots more. Please send my thoughts to Mari. I never met her, but from what Grover said about her, my sense is that she is just as special as him.

Hope all is well with you and your boys.

Best,
Ryan

Dear Mari,
Thank you for letting us know, our deepest condolences to you your family and his extended community around the world. We were so fortunate to have him as a friend and teacher. He seemed to have a way of looking at life with a sparkle in his eye as though something fun was around the corner and something new to learn. He leaves so many good works that continue providing food, beauty and capturing carbon, his legacy will live on in all these places. You two inspire so many people with all the possibilities and positivities. I know you were the light of his life, he was so blessed to be able to go through so much of his life with you. Take good care, love, hugs and prayers to you both as he transitions.
