Elizabeth Burke

Biographie

Elizabeth Ann Burke was born July 8, 1958 to Berenice B. Burke and Lawrence I. Burke in Salem Oregon. Elizabeth was the last of five children born to Berenice and Larry, and as the little sister was doted on by her brothers Larry and Frank and sisters Kitty and Barbara. Elizabeth lived in St. Louis, Helena Montana and Tacoma Washington growing up. Elizabeth met her future love, Tom Drake, in a Wilson High School English class in their junior year, and they went to the Senior Prom together in 1976. Elizabeth went to Gonzaga University in Spokane Washington and graduated with a degree in English in 1980.

Elizabeth was a producer for the CBS KIRO News Radio Show in Seattle, lining up multiple live interviews each day for the news host. KIRO Headquarters was only a few blocks from the Pike Place Market, and Elizabeth knew the salmon-launching fisherman in the Market and just about everyone else there, always returning home to her apartment in Ballard with free vegetables, fruit and flowers. In the early ‘80s Elizabeth moved to Los Angeles to join Tom and entered the world of LA public relations at Ruder Finn Rotman under the wing of her mentor Marci Blaze. Elizabeth managed the “Photo Room” at the Oscars in 1986, and had the honor of escorting Walter Matthau out for a cigarette break, in addition to putting all the Oscar winners in front of the bright lights and scrambling photographers. Elizabeth’s many adventures in PR included the grand opening of Citicorp Plaza in downtown LA, getting a huge Christmas tree delivered just in the nick of time for LA Mayor Tom Bradley to flip the tree lights on for the assembled crowd. She presided as the “Mall Queen” as Director of Marketing at the Glendale Galleria, where planning for the Christmas parade and decorations started in August. A general and lifelong dislike of malls became apparent at this time.

In 1987 Elizabeth and Tom married in Tacoma and returned to LA for Tom to finish school. After a couple more years of Venice Beach adventures, they moved south to La Jolla in 1990. In August 1991 Dylan arrived, and Elizabeth became a full-time mom. The family moved cross country in 1995 to Raleigh North Carolina, and in April 1995 Colin arrived. Spending time outside with the boys and the lush greenery of North Carolina sparked a deep desire in Elizabeth to pursue environmental education, and she founded Mud Pie Planet to start the next phase of her professional life. She soon joined the board of the Environmental Educators of North Carolina and organized EENC state-wide events. Elizabeth expanded her environmental education work after moving to Vienna in 2003. She was named Outstanding Educator in 2009 by Project Learning Tree, a national organization, and in 2013 received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Environmental Educators of North Carolina. Elizabeth also wrote educational guides for the National Park Service, including materials for Great Falls National Park, the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in New York and the White House. She served for many years on the board of Earth Sangha, a nonprofit public charity focused on ecological restoration.

Elizabeth’s illness took us by surprise. Dylan and Colin spent many, many hours caring for their mother; we greatly appreciate caregiver Sharlley Darko and especially the loving devotion of Anastasia Appiah Gyamfi, affectionately known as Anas. Anas never left Elizabeth’s side six days a week and will always have our gratitude for her love of Elizabeth.

I wish I had a photo to share, but have enjoyed hearing all the great memories exchanged here. I will always remember Elizabeth's huge smile. She welcomed everyone, and was always interested and enthusiastic about what others were up to. I will miss her.

I will never forget when were having dinner at her house in La Jolla, Elizabeth winked at me when Tom and I were disagreeing about something. I had agreed with Elizabeth, Tom did not. I don't recall the subject, nothing too deep, maybe the Padres won-loss record or Tom's latest cool attempt to measure sand moving around. R=The wink was wonderful, no words needed to be exchanged.

Elizabeth was a volunteer extraordinaire. Our children were in different grades at Washington Elementary in Raleigh, and we met by joining the vibrant PTA there. It was an outstanding group of community leaders who went on to accomplish many things beyond our PTA. The bar was raised high! Elizabeth and I chaired the EcoFest event every Earth day. She programmed curriculum appropriate scientists for every grade level in the school, and coordinated the rotations and teachers' schedules, giving them all a break. The afternoon was a 5th grade competition "Who Wants To Win a Million Eco Points", which was narrow cast through the school. Of course, she taught me the word narrow cast. The multiple years of planning sessions at her house were a joy. The challenges and fun of planning a big event with her for multiple years were a gift to me. She laughed her way through everything. It was all a big ball of fun to be savored. Her boys were her biggest joy. Tom her proudest collaboration. She cheered on every accomplishment and worked through every setback. Baking veggies into chocolate cakes. Turning tree stumps into flower gardens. Selling me her shrubbery that is thriving in my back yard. How did I fit those in my van? Winning the Wake County Best ongoing PTA program for EcoFest. "Of course, we won!" she laughed on the phone. Tales of the Oscars. Trips to Europe. Her admiration for Kitty. Buying a special chair so Tom's mom could visit and have a private nook to read in. It all delighted her. She herself was the biggest delight the world could give, and I am grateful.

Elizabeth & I met shortly after the family moved to Virginia... Elizabeth lobbied the elementary school principal and won over the PTA and numerous volunteers to her environmental education initiative. Over the years I was to see how it was just one of the many ways she made a joyful impact wherever she found herself--Kids and adults all loved MudPie Planet, the Growing Together Gardens and City Critters. Over the ensuing years I grew to know & love Elizabeth even more as we worked together to enlist volunteers, apply for grant money, develop the school's gardens and grow the environmental education program for our kids. Elizabeth was inspiring, experienced and caring. She devised amazing audio and video presentations, beautiful and engaging newsletters, showcasing the kids enjoying creative lessons. Her long goodby was oh so sad, but cannot diminish the impact she had on so many of us, or our forever love and appreciation for our dear friend of a truly rare and wonderful spirit.

Elizabeth was creative, talented and generous! When my first grandchild was born, I retired to babysit him and was privileged to receive one of her handmade quilts. Elizabeth secretly contacted my family and friends and urged them to make a 9-inch quilt square, representing nature or their connection to me. Some were quilters, most were not, but they sent her 18 squares, and she added a couple. She wrote the name of the quilter on each square. The squares represent my home state of Kansas (sunflower), my college alma mater, a Make Trash Extinct dinosaur, flora and fauna from friends and co-workers across NC and military friends from several states, and a koala bear from my college roommate in Australia! Collecting these squares must have taken massive logistics, persistence, and….patience!
Then Elizabeth assembled the squares, added backing and binding, and hand quilted the entire quilt. It is a cherished work of art! I wrote lullaby lyrics to Rock-a-Bye-Baby, naming each square and adding the name of each subsequent grandchild. I sang that lullaby and taught it to each grandchild, and we talked about the wonderful friend, Elizabeth, who made the quilt.
The fifth grandchild is now 3 years old and the quilt hangs on her little nap bed in the corner of the dining room, where I see it every day and am reminded of Elizabeth’s warm hugs and special friendship.
A photo of the quilt is attached. I'll try to also attach the Lullaby.
I know Elizabeth also made quilts for other family and friends. I hope they will share their quilt photos too: personalized hand quilts, t-shirt quilts, etc. Elizabeth was such a talented, generous force in this world, and has left such a special loving legacy.

This is the Lullaby lyrics I wrote to describe the above quilt. I sent it first to each of the quilters and Elizabeth, as a thank you note. But then used it as the only lullaby I sang to the grandchildren while I babysat them in my home. They learned the words too, and made a game of finding each square in the quilt as we sang the song. And thought of Elizabeth....

Carson’s Rock-a-Bye Nature Quilt
(tune: Rock-a-Bye Baby) with love from “Glo”
August 2004 (updated 2019)

Carson is lucky. Cate would agree
That Glo has good friends, dear as can be….
They stitched and they snipped, they padded and pieced.
Made Carson a quilt, so stunning to see.

Rock-a-bye Tiger, Gecko and Frog,
Dino and Koala in bill-a-bog…
Sun little Turtles on a wide beach.
Watch out for Wildcats, Gorillas and feet!

Nest in the Birdhouse Bluebird so true.
Cardinal in Tree tops, Cat can’t get you….
Cattails stand tall; Sunflowers in bloom;
While Posies and Dogwood brighten the room.

Plants fed and Watered; Pierce and Emma too,
While Sun, Moon, and Stars shine, Halle, o’er you…
Thanks be to dear friends from near and far.
Glo’s kids are precious; Loving, you are!

I was privileged to become acquainted with Elizabeth through my friend, Kitty, who is her sister. I met Elizabeth in person twice during her visits to Seattle for special family events, and immediately felt a kinship with her. Her beautiful resonant smile and positive attitude were an inspiration. About 16 years ago, she learned that my first grandchild would be born in the fall. A few months later, I was astonished and touched to receive a beautiful patchwork baby quilt she had made for the baby, which was used by my grandchild Rowan and then later by younger sister Anaka. It’s now a treasured heirloom being saved for their potential children of the future. Elizabeth left a legacy for my family, and for so many others. She will be greatly missed.

Elizabeth was my cousin. The Glazier cousins grew up in Salem, Oregon with the Burke cousins until the Burke family moved to St. Louis in the early 1960's. During those years it was customary to hand clothes down to the younger kids as the older ones outgrew them. I can still recall seeing my red polka dot dress again on my sister and then once again on Elizabeth. I can close my eyes and see her bright cheery smile.

Terry and I had joined Auntie Eleanor and some of my cousins at Pacific Shore, Washington to spend some days together.
Tom, Elizabeth,Ken& Colleen played a part in this memory.
We were staying within walking distance to the beach. It was a calm, but very foggy day. Tom, Elizabeth, Terry and myself decided we would take a walk on the beach. Ken & Colleen had brought their beloved dog, Cody, with them. Elizabeth and I volunteered to take said beloved dog with us so he could get exercise and do his duty.
When we got to the beach Tom and Terry decided to walk ahead of us and Cody.
Elizabeth and I were enjoying a leisurely walk in the fog. Talking, laughing and walking Cody, who by the way was being a very good dog… not barking at passing people or other dogs, no pulling on the leash. What you would consider a perfect waking partner.
After walking quite a ways up the beach, Elizabeth stopped stop check on Cody….Cody, the dog who was being such a good dog, was NO WHERE IN SIGHT!! We had been walking for who knows how long with a leash connected to an empty collar!!!
GOOD GRIEF!! We have lost Cody, the beloved dog of our cousins! How do we go back to the house and explain this mess to them?
We took off heading back down the beach at a fast pace calling... “CODY….CODY….Come here CODY!!!” Laughing but mostly dying for multiple reasons……
1. We’ve lost a dog who was placed in our care.
2. We’ve been walking for who knows how long pulling a leash and collar with no dog attached to it.
3. Trying to figure out how to explain to Ken & Colleen about this without looking like absolute inept dog walkers.
4. Trying not to wet ourselves!
We finally found Cody down the beach having the time of his carefree, adventurous life. He did come to us and we immediately tightened that collar around his sweet little neck.
Then we had to find Tom and Terry and tell them about it. They both may have questioned our future as dog walkers.
We returned to the house and confessed to Ken and Colleen. We resigned quickly from that job.
Including picture of Cody!

We love you Elizabeth.

I met Elizabeth at The Music Center of Los Angeles. I was working as the Special Events Coordinator and Elizabeth was doing pro bono public relations for us.

I don't remember exactly what Elizabeth said when I first met her, but, it was incredibly witty, so witty that I knew we'd be friends for life.

We did things that good friends do. We derived code phrases about some of the oddities we encountered while working together at the Music Center. For years our code phrase "Mushroom Dippers" made us burst into giggles.

I spent a weekend at Elizabeth and Tom's apartment in Santa Monica and visited them in La Jolla, as well. I had so much fun with them. Visiting Elizabeth and Tom meant a great barbecue, a cozy bed, great conversations and the feeling of being "home." They were the best hosts.

Elizabeth turned me on to Moosewood cookbooks and, by doing so, introduced me to a healthier way of cooking than my own burger-and-fries Midwestern style. I am so grateful for the walks we took on Venice beach when my daughter, Allison, was just a baby. Elizabeth always eased the stress of everyday life with her compassion, love, care and laughter.

(While visiting them in Santa Monica, Tom lent me Stephen Hawkings book A Brief History In Time. I had a brief history with that book as it took me so much work to research what Hawkings was writing about that I, sadly, returned the book unread. The three of us had a good laugh over it. I did have a profound dream about Hawkings a year ago so the book did leave some impact.)

Elizabeth became a kind of sister to me. She always offered her shoulder to cry on when I was in despair over a relationship.

I remember when Dylan was born and then Colin. It was as If Elizabeth had found her truest purpose and calling in life, to be a mother. How she loved her boys.

Elizabeth was an outstanding mother, wife and friend. She lived her life with integrity, purpose and zest. But, most of all she lived her life with love and a full heart. And, there is no better life than one lived with the heart.

Journey well, my dear friend. ❤️

I most distinctly remember an afternoon walk with Tom and Elizabeth one summer the Jarrett family had spent at Grandyma's in Tacoma. I was quite young and so wasn't all too familiar with how to make conversation with adults who were not my parents. My brother and I were invited by Tom and Elizabeth to join them on a walk in a special park / reserve where there were bridges and thickets of bushes and trees. I remember the both of them taking in the sunshine of that summer day and pointing out all the wildlife I hadn't noticed like fish in the streams. I believe it was a protected area for some species. Both Elizabeth and Tom had a careful fascination and respect for the quiet sanctuary that was hidden somewhere in Washington. I had never before recognized or appreciated Elizabeth's passion for environmentalism and Tom's love of the quiet outdoors, having always before been framed in the chaos of coordinating three generation camping trips or the drama of sandwich distributions and the chatter (and heavy breathing) of tourists such as us visiting Mount Rainier.

I will always remember that quiet sunny afternoon where I truly met my aunt and uncle as the wonderful individuals they are.

My deepest condolences to Tom, Dylan and Colin. All my love, V.

I met Elizabeth when her younger son, Colin, entered kindergarten at Washington GTMagnet Elementary School in Raleigh, NC. What a gift and a joy it was to have them both in my classroom! Elizabeth was an amazing mom who dedicated everything she had to her children and Tom while still striving to enrich the lives of others who crossed her path. Elizabeth was an integral part of our kindergarten classroom. Not only did she help children weekky in their center activities but she planned and implemented numerous amazing science enrichment projects that year including basket making! Whatever Elizabeth did with the students in Colin's class, it was always in the superlatives and immensely enjoyed by students (and their teachers).Elizabeth was a wonderful, smart, kind, caring, and simply lovely person. She became not only an invaluable parent in my classroom, but also a dear friend. I loved getting to know not only Colin and Elizabeth but also Dylan and Tom. Elizabeth was so very proud of them all. Elizabeth showed her support and appreciation of her sons' teachers along with other staff members in numerous ways including annual breakfasts in her home ( with most scrumptious treats) ! She was always willing to help anyone in the school and she touched the lives of many during their years at Washington Elementary. Both Elizabeth and Tom added much support to our class and school. I was truly amazed during the first part of the school year to learn Elizabeth was the sister of a friend I had in California 15 years before! I had Colin's cousin Erin in my home preschool at Stanford in 1983-84 and her sister Kitty and I became great friends. Small world indeed! I'm sad to know Elizabeth is no longer on this earth but I'm sure she is in heaven helping any angels with broken wings or who want to learn more about plants or the outdoors. My world and that of many was a better place because Elizabeth was a part of it. My love and sympathy goes out to Colin, Dylan, Tom, Kitty, Erin, and all those Elizabeth loved. I believe her love fior you will be eternal. Forever yours, Rose Anne Brown
