On Tuesday, June 21st, via Dirk Schenke, with who I am still in contact, I received the sad message that Dierk Scheel passed away on May 18th, 2022. Unfortunately, although I still work and live in Saxony-Anhalt, I was not able to visit the funeral anymore. From 2006 till 2008 I collaborated with his department in the group of Justin Lee. His scientific competence and kind character impressed me and still are exemplary. I also enjoyed working together with his group, in which scientific work as well as social events were kept high (s photo: christmas celebration, 2006: Dierk Scheel, Sabine Rosahl, Wolfgang Knogge). Thanks to Dierk and his department I learned al lot in the areas of plant pathology as well as positive collaboration - this combination is quite unique in the scientific community, and have continued to practice both in my present work at the Federal Environment Agency.
My sincere condolence to Dierks family,
Esther van der Zalm

Very sad to hear this! Such a great researcher and a humble person he was. So unfortunate that he left so early! Heartfelt condolences.
Though I was in IPB-Halle for a very brief period, he could recognise my hardwork and interest in research. The letter of recommendation he gave me is a treasure. Thanks to him and the entire research team of Dr.Thorsten.

Dierk was not only a great scientist, but also an excellent person. He was able to combine scientific rigour with a friendly and approachable manner. He always had a smile on his face and showed immense scientific curiosity and interest in a wide range of topics.
His death is a great loss for the scientific community. We all have fond memories of him and will keep him in our thoughts.
My sincere condolences to his family.

It was with the greatest of dismay and sadness that I received the news of Dierk's passing. He was very special, both scientifically and personally (I know by experience that these qualities do not necessarily go together...).
I met Dierk shortly after starting in Halle (now some twenty years ago); the next time I saw him, he had a black eye and bruises that he had sustained upon intervening in a xenophobic incident, truly a man of civil courage.
Over the years, I valued his scientific integrity, his fairness and analytical skills in the various initiatives (both successful and unsuccessful) in which we worked together. I shall sorely miss him.

The sudden death of Dierk was very sad news for me, leaving me behind with sorrow.

Dierk was a wonderful person with whom I enjoyed developing the ScienceCampus Halle back in 2011 to support research in plant-based bioeconomy.
He always remained very close to us afterwards and I had the pleasure of being in lively exchange with him at various meetings and other occasions like SFB evaluations or bioeconomy conferences.
I also enjoyed Dierks warm and optimistic attitude.

I will keep Dierk in my best memory and mourn with the IPB and his relatives over this bitter loss,

Klaus

It was a big shock to hear Dierk’s premature passing, which will require a long time to be processed.

I met Dierk at a conference, during the first week of starting my group at the IPB. When he heard we are both travelling back to Halle, he immediately took me onboard of his taxi and invited me to an airport lounge on his pass. Once inside, he poured two glasses of wine, filled my hands with chocolates, and shared his research stories on the mysteries of root exudates. I was incredibly moved by Dierk’s kindness and generosity, and completely captivated by his scientific brilliance and vision. Many colleagues have similar stories, and we all share profound admiration and deep affection for Dierk. His warm and genuine personality was as inspiring as his pioneering scientific discoveries, and both legacies will be dearly cherished.

My sincere condolences to his family.

As many others the news of Dierk passing away was a shock. As a young PhD student, one of my fondest memories was visiting Dierks lab ( as a collaborating lab student) and initiation of my first experiments on calcium signaling in his lab with Justin and Steffie. Even with a young student like me at that time, Dierk was always so kind and encouraging. Years later whenever i have visited IPB Halle, Dierk has always been the most kind and wonderful person and has always been so encouraging. Dierks scientific contributions in field of plant immunity and his personality will always be remembered

What a disheartening and truly saddening moment when our friend Wolfgang Knogge called me to tell me the still unthinkable! Didn't we just have finished a phone conversation and it felt how so often during the past 31 years, familiar, warm, cordial? You will be sorely missed by so many of us, as a friend, mentor, teacher and scientist! It is comforting though to have countless memories of precious moments, in which you live on as a friendly, unpretentious, open-minded, fair and empathic person you have always been. A true role model. RIP, Dierk

It was with great sadness that I learned about Dierk's passing. He was a great scientist and pioneer in the field of plant immunity, who was respected by everyone.
A couple of years after starting my own group, I had the great pleasure to be part of an European ERA-PG consortium together with Dierk (as well as Justin) (2009-2012), and it was always a pleasure to meet with him and discussing at these occasions. Dierk warmly hosted me a few times in Halle, and I always enjoyed these visits, and, as many people mentioned, nice dinners and drinks in the evenings.
I regret that I could see Dierk more often in recent years. He will be misses. All my sincere condolences to his family.

I was incredibly sad to hear that Dierk has died. Dierk was my first proper mentor in research when I started as a very green postdoc at MPIPZ in 1987. He was super smart, kind, encouraging, fair and loved a party. In fact my memory of the time in Dierk's lab is one of enormous energy and fun. We had some riotous parties with Dierk and our wonderful colleagues - I think often stoked by tequilla in various forms (a drink new to me Edmundo, but quickly embraced). I realized later that Dierk just had a talent for doing excellent science and making a research team 'gel'. He will be deeply missed and my heartfelt condolences go to his family.

As I reflected on the surreal sudden passing of Dierk Scheel, fragments of lyrics from the theme song of a movie I watched as a kid “earwormed” back into my head. The movie was “To Sir With Love” (A 60’s movie of delinquent schoolers finally expressing respect to their teacher).

Indeed......
“how do you thank someone, who has taken you from crayons to perfume?”

Dierk was there when I defended my PhD thesis, welcomed me into his department as a new postdoc (in Thorsten Nürnberger’s group) and years later, kindly allowed me to manage his group. Where would I (and many others) be career-wise without your guidance and generosity, dear Dierk?

As I stumble my way in running the group, I remember the many lab meetings where we brainstormed and tried to make sense of the experimental results. When we younger ones insisted there was really a weak band in the western blots (…hinting that he needed new glasses), I vividly recall Dierk jokingly explaining what a “XX”-gram (XX = insert name of a former colleague, who used a marker pen to “enhance” a gel band too weak to be captured by the photos). Trivial as it may sound, it was a lesson in scientific integrity – a principle Dierk strongly upheld throughout his career. For this and his scientific contributions, he was and is highly regarded (*) in the community. (*See also anecdote from Jason Rudd). His scientific opinion was highly sought after and even after retirement, he sat on numerous evaluation panels. And beyond the great science through Dierk’s leadership, many will affirm that he is one of the kindest persons around.

But alas………
“The time has come, For closing books,……..And as I leave, I know that, I am leaving my best friend”.……

Thank you, Dierk, for the years of mentorship and friendship. To Sir With Love.

i met dierk in 2006 at the arabidopsis conference in madison, wisconsin. back then i was a postdoc at the university of minnesota and it turned out that dierk was the boss of my undergraduate advisor lore westphal who had joined him for the conference. after talking for a while, we found out that both of us, dierk and me, were from celle, a small town in the north of germany. even more so, his parents’ home was in a small village 15 km east of celle (ahnsbeck for the local insiders!) right across the street from where my high school/undergrad girl friend lived. how small can the world be meeting someone on the other side of the ocean? i am pretty sure that this encounter with and connection to dierk helped me a lot to get an independent junior group leader position at the ipb a few months later, located in his department. dierk made sure that the junior group had the best working environment one could wish for in that stage of career. he was always willing to give advice, but never tried to push us into whatever direction. i guess that is the best you can do as a senior mentor to help a young group to get established and mature. especially during these first years at the ipb i greatly enjoyed many hours with him (and other mostly senior scientists) at the many sfb dinners in the osteria in kleine ullrichstrasse with the external seminar speakers. for a junior scientist a great opportunity to get to know folks like dierk on a more personal level. and becoming of age in the late 60s, dierk had stories to tell and experiences to share. so i can say for sure that, although there were many others that were much closer to him, i am one of those who benefited a lot from dierk on their way of becoming an independent scientist. thanks a lot dierk!

i still go to the osteria regularly …

We were shocked and deeply sadden to hear about the unexpected death of our colleague Dierk. Doris and I already got to know Dierk during our times at the University of Freiburg in the early 1980s, and as fortune will have it, in late 1983 he and I were both hired as research group leaders in the newly established department of Prof. Klaus Hahlbrock at the Max-Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Köln. There we joined the other new departmental group leaders: Erich Kombrink, Elmon Schmelzer, Wolfgang Schulz and Wolgang Knogge. This was an extremely exciting period in molecular plant biology and already from the start the environment within the department was extremely stimulating scientifically. It was also very collegial and resulted in long lasting friendship between all of us, including our families. Dierk played an important role in this respect because, although he made clear from the start that his future plans were to become a head of his own department as soon as possible, he never tried to take advantage of something at the cost of the other members. Discussion with him were always highly interesting and very fruitful and he constantly searched for ways for us to scientifically interact. He could also enjoy dancing and partying, and we enjoyed having a few nice drinks with him and Marita on several occasions. Dierk made several important contributions to the plant science field but it is on the personal level that we will miss him the most. Our deepest sympathy goes to his entire family.

Very sad news that reached me last week. In fact, I owe Dierk my entire career because he interviewed me (by phone these days) for my Alexander-von-Humboldt fellowship allowing me to join Enrico Martinoia's group in Neuchâtel/Switzerland in 1999. There were inconsistencies in my CV that we could easily solve by phone, however, without his call I would have never gotten this fellowship and probably not stayed in science.
I am grateful for this and to have had a chance to thank him later on in person.

Without his sure support, many of us who had the good fortune and honor of knowing him and living with him, would not have the current academic situation or the personal progress that we currently have. I had the pleasure to work as Dierks post-doc from 2000-2004 on an EU project; joining him from the UK. Dierk was an inspirational scientist who I learnt so much from in my time with him. Was also a fine, compassionate and warm human being. He will be dearly missed by so many. Below I have a few anecdotes (of many) I can recall starting with my arrival at IPB. DS obviously Dierk. JR me.
DS on JR’s arrival at IPB (2000-2004)- “you should learn German.” JR- “absolutely I will”
Sad / shocking/ compassionate. DS and JR preparing to fly from Halle / Leipzig to Vienna 9th Nov (9/11) for protein phosphorylation in plants conference. Thorsten Nuernberger tells us to check online news as plane has hit twin towers in NY. Catastrophe ensued... DS asked JR whether he was comfortable flying to Vienna still? JR said yes. DS made sure that he took JR into frequent flyers lounge to get well “relaxed” prior to flight. Was much appreciated!
DS- “you should learn German.” JR- “absolutely I will, but Jon Page keeps making me laugh in class”
Funny/ said a lot about the man. All in post doc office next to DS office heard an impromptu scream of laughter coming from his office. 5 mins later he appeared with a print out of an email he had received from a post-doc based overseas enquiring whether there were any potential employment opportunities in DS group. The enquiry finished with a statement in which the applicant actually wanted to say.. “ it would be an honour to work for such a HIGHLY REGARDED scientist as you”.. Unfortunately spell checkers were unable to identify the error in the actual email sent to DS, which actually read.. ”it would be an honour to work for such a HIGHLY RETARDED scientist as you..” He loved it (humble and self-deprecating) and I still tell this story to my students today as a cautionary note of the danger of a single letter mistake in a hurried email!
DS- “you should learn German.” JR- “absolutely I am getting a little better by watching Bundesliga highlights on TV..Tor!!..”
JR’s subsequent career. I loved working for DS and living in Halle. But he (more than I) knew I would have to move on to further my career at some point. One day. DS- “Jason there is a job going with Kim Hammond-Kosack at somewhere called Rothamsted back in the UK. To work on a wheat disease caused by a fungus – you should apply”, JR- “Interesting, but I have no idea about fungi”, DS- “Maybe just give it a go anyway..?” JR somehow got offered the job (been on it ~17 years since). DS- “Wow congratulations, lets talk about which plant defence projects from here you will want to take with you”. JR- “No. I’m going to work on a fungus..”. DS- “..but you have no idea about fungi”
DS- “you should learn German.” JR- “absolutely Chef… I never quite manged it but learnt a fair bit. Thanks for enabling that!”
Miscellaneous. Was deeply respected by so many. But he also oversaw the development of an exciting multicultural research community in IPB-Halle. “Friday evenings” in town became legendary for groups of staff / students from Germany / Singapore/ France / Philippines/ Holland / Hungary / Poland / Finland / Morocco / Palestine / Israel / Canada / South Africa / UK (me) etc.. all sharing a beer (or cocktail) with der Chef (DS) in kleine Ulrichstrasse and/ or elsewhere. DS was a glue that brought many together both professionally and personally. RIP Chef

Dierk was a major influence on my career as a plant scientist. He was the corresponding author on my first plant biology paper and led me through that early project. He was a wonderful member of the wonderful group leaders in Klaus Halbrock's department at the MPIZ in the 80s and 90s. Dierk was kind and warm and always willing to discuss science, leadership and life in general. We first me Dierk, and Klaus, at a conference at UC Davis in 1983. He was the first man I know with an earring! He was a committed pacifist and believed strongly in reuniting Germany after the wall fell. Dierk was a wonderful friend. We had one New Year's Eve party and he and Marita's house in around 1988--lots of dancing with the kids on their beds as I recall. Dierk had the fine combination of humor and wit and serious calm leadership that I think we all admired and loved him for.

I will always treasure my stories about Dierk. In particular, when I was trying to read and learn about post-war German politics and learned of the former Bundespraesident, Walter Scheel. I was mentioning this in the coffee room of the Hahlbrock department and either Erich Kombrink or Wolfgang Knogge cooly informed me that this was Dierk's Grandfather. As if on cue, Dierk walked into the coffee room at that moment and played along with the joke. They were very serious and I was completely fooled for the rest of the day.

The last time we visited Halle, Dierk hosted us at his flat for dinner. Hanna and Jan were there too. As Hannah and her little son approached the door, we could hear him yelling 'Opa Dierk, Opa Dierk, lass mich rein, Ich bin's.' The smile and joy on Dierk's face were lovely in that moment. Dierk was a very influential person in my life for many years. I will miss him. Our best regards to his family.

From John Manners:
In addition to his science leadership I had many warm conversations with Dierk in an earlier time of political transition in Germany and Europe. He exemplified all the personal characters needed to create a better future for all. I am so sad to hear this news - RIP Dierk.

With great sadness, we heard of the untimely death of our fine colleague and dear friend Dierk Scheel. Dierk was a great researcher, a leading figure for international plant science, and a superb leader for IPB.
In addition to his many other activities, Dierk has been a member of our Scientific Advisory Board for many years. We always very much enjoyed the stimulating discussions with him, and appreciated his thoughtful input and constructive criticism. We owe him a lot and we will sadly miss his intellectual sharpness, his enthusiasm about science and his good sense of humor.
On behalf of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology, we wish to offer our condolences to the IPB as well as to Dierk’s family.
