Recuerdos

A servant of the people, a keeper of relationships, and a man of compassion.

Siddeque Ahmed was a steadfast voice for the people of Karimganj South — a legislator, minister, and human being whose warmth and commitment to public service left an enduring mark on Assam's political life. Born on October 1, 1962, in Dalopar, Patharkandi, he grew up in the Barak Valley region and completed his Higher Secondary education at Zafarform Extended HS School, Baraigram, in 1977. From an early age, he was drawn to community life and the idea that governance could be a tool for genuine human betterment. Ahmed entered electoral politics in 2001, winning the Karimganj South Assembly seat as a Samata Party candidate. It was a debut that announced a politician with deep grassroots support. He contested as an Independent in 2006 before formally aligning with the Indian National Congress — the party under whose banner he would go on to build his most consequential years of service. Under Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's Congress government, Ahmed rose steadily through the ranks. From 2011 to 2014, he served as Minister of State with Independent Charge of Co-operation and Border Areas Development, overseeing critical programmes that touched the lives of communities along Assam's borders. From 2015 to 2016, he was elevated to Cabinet Minister, holding the demanding portfolios of Industries and Commerce, Power, and Public Enterprises — portfolios he managed, in the words of his colleagues, with utmost professionalism. His fourth election victory in 2021, defeating AGP's Aziz Ahmed Khan, reaffirmed what constituents in Karimganj South had long understood: Ahmed was not a politician who governed from a distance. Known as a great human being who valued relationships and remained compassionate toward everyone, he maintained personal bonds even with political opponents, a rare quality in public life. In 2022, he was suspended from the Congress party over an alleged violation of party discipline during Rajya Sabha elections. Yet the party's own spokespersons acknowledged he remained part of the organisation in spirit, and he continued to serve his constituency without pause. Siddeque Ahmed passed away on September 13, 2026, at his residence in Baroigram, Sribhumi district, after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 63 years old. He is survived by his wife, Anima Begum, their three sons, and a daughter. His passing leaves a void not only in the social life of Sribhumi but also in the wider administrative circles of Assam.

Deeply pained by the passing away of my dear colleague of many years, Shri Siddique Ahmed Sahab. As a legislator, he always prioritised his people's welfare, and as a Minister as well, he ran his assigned department with utmost professionalism , but beyond these, he was a great human being who valued relationships and was compassionate towards everyone.
