Mark and I went to St. Bernadette's in Lakewood together. Many years later, as a grad student at Brown, I was shocked to run into him at a protest march in Providence. I recognized him immediately. Turned out, Mark lived around the corner from me. We'd often see each other around Providence and on campus, with a wave and a greeting. I can't overstate how comforting, and sometimes eerie, it was to see a familiar face from childhood so far away from where we grew up. Mark very kindly got me free tickets to events on Brown's campus (and, as a broke grad student, this meant a lot to me). I don't know what made him pop in my mind today, but I thought of him and googled to see what he was up to these days, and I am very sad to learn that he has passed. Much love to the Benz family.

Mark was a very dear friend to our daughter Cara. They met at Mullen high school and remained constant friends. He would show up at our front door with a big smile. We enjoyed our conversations...he was interested in us beyond politeness. Conversations were varied and full of wit and humor. Our prayers continue for this incredible young man and his family.

Suzie, I am so sorry to hear of your loss.

Mark was very special and will always remain so on the impact he had on my life. That we grew up climbing together than by happenstance reconnected in Portland was quite exciting. I could recognize him and his crooked smile anywhere, and it especially warmed my heart to see him walk up the steps at the Portland Art Museum about 2.5 years ago. His, smile, freckles and wild hair are my lasting visual memories of him but his spirit that will always thrive in everyone he met was so well articulated by everyone. My favorite expression of his character was the line "Imagine Karl Marx's brain in John Muir's body." As a climbing partner and friend, this is an exceptional distillation of numerous traits that made him a unique, thoughtful person I am so proud to have known.

Amazing child that grew into an amazing young man... I remember the countless days he spent at our house with our two sons Brandon and Kyle. How we were all so blessed to have such a guest whom filled our house with wit, spontaneity, and happiness. We are truly forever blessed and changed having known such a blissful, brilliant, beautiful, mind...Mark C. Benz
