He led by example, gave everything, and left a mark on every club he served.

Douglas James Loft was born on Christmas Day, 1986, in Maidstone, England — a date that seemed fitting for a man who would bring his whole heart to everything he did. A left-footed midfielder standing 1.83 metres tall, Doug possessed the rare combination of technical quality, tactical intelligence, and the kind of unshakeable professionalism that teammates and managers never forget. He began his senior career at non-League Hastings United before Brighton & Hove Albion came calling in January 2006. At the Amex, he made 49 appearances across the Championship and League One, learning his trade in a demanding professional environment. The move that would define his career came in June 2009, when former Brighton manager Micky Adams signed him for Port Vale — one of the first two players Adams recruited. Over five seasons in Burslem, Doug made 196 appearances and scored 19 goals, becoming the heartbeat of the club's midfield. He was renowned across the dressing room for his exceptional fitness, his strong defensive instincts, and his ability to slot seamlessly into multiple positions without ever diminishing his output. In 2011–12 he was voted Port Vale Player of the Season. The following summer, Adams handed him the captain's armband — a privilege Doug wore with quiet, determined dignity. He wasn't a shouter or a chest-beater; he led by doing, by running, by giving absolutely everything, every single time. In the 2012–13 season, he guided Port Vale to automatic promotion from League Two, a chapter that will forever belong to the club's history. In 2014 he returned to Kent with Gillingham, again appointed captain from day one, and made a further 70 appearances in League One. He subsequently served Colchester United, Shrewsbury Town, Dagenham & Redbridge, Billericay Town, Margate, and Tonbridge Angels with the same wholehearted commitment. Across an 18-year professional career, he made more than 420 appearances and scored 32 goals before retiring on 1 July 2023 following an Achilles tendon injury. Doug is survived by his wife Laura and their two daughters, Freya and Amelie. He passed away suddenly on 12 October 2026, aged 39, following a medical emergency. The outpouring of grief from clubs across English football was immediate and heartfelt — a measure of the man he was. Honest, hard-working, and always with a smile on his face, Douglas James Loft was a model professional in every sense of the word.

I heard last night by text and it knocked me sideways. I couldn't sleep. I was desperate to speak to somebody because I didn't want to admit it was true... I'm devastated not only for Laura, his two girls but also the Port Vale family. I'm sure that Port Vale supporters will be the first to remember that during his time at the football club he always gave his all. He was a model professional. I can't speak highly enough about him.
