Biografía

Dr. Thomas Patrick Storey, MD, MPH, "Tom," 62, of Havertown, PA, passed away on December 31, 2020 due to complications of cancer. Son of the late Patrick and Mary Storey, he was born on September 19, 1958 in Baltimore, MD. Tom was the beloved husband of Joanne Connaughton Storey and loving father of Kathleen (Katie) Marie Storey (engaged to William Grodzicki), Eileen Patricia Storey, and Patrick Connaughton Storey. He is also survived by his three sisters and their spouses -- Eileen Storey and George Record, Catherine (Cathy) and Dennis Buddemeyer, and Marion and David Biddle.

Tom was a lifelong public servant of the city of Philadelphia, who both cared for patients and directed the city’s community health centers. Dedicated to health equity, Tom worked with an outstanding team to ensure that all residents of Philadelphia had access to high-quality comprehensive primary care. A graduate of Harvard College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Tom then trained in internal medicine at the University of Rochester, where he met his wife. Tom was a lifelong fan of all Philadelphia sports teams, especially the Phillies, and was thrilled to celebrate the team’s two World Series Championships, first as a young man and later with his three children. Tom loved music and had a soundtrack for his life, always ready to share a perfect song for every moment with his dear friends and family. An avid gardener, photographer, and the always reliable weatherman, he shared his passion for the holidays and seasons with elaborate décor for every occasion. Above all, family was Tom’s ultimate priority, and his love and wisdom will be profoundly missed and forever cherished by his wife, children, sisters, brothers- and sisters-in-law, and fourteen nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dr. Thomas Storey Memorial Fund at the Mayor’s Fund for Philadelphia. All donations will benefit the City of Philadelphia’s Health Centers. It was with great sadness that I learned of Tom's passing -- he was such a fixture at AHS that I couldn't imagine it without him - still can't. Tom, in his candid, witty, and opinionated way was a genuine supporter of the efforts we made, and continue to make at the Health Department to address the issue of intimate partner violence (IPV), long before other health departments were even recognizing that this issue was one of significance. One could not escape the fact that this was a man who cared deeply about people -- his patients, his staff, his colleagues, and the community at large. I will remember most his wish that staff members who were impacted by IPV be supported to the same extent as patients. I will forever miss our lengthy conversations, his unflappable support of innovative ideas, and his ability to listen. I know his legacy will live on. Rest in peace, Tom ...

What a beautiful human being Tom was. He made the world a better place. The "community of Community Health Centers" will miss his wisdom, compassion, wry sense of humor...him. It only took a few minutes talking to him to know how much he embraced the health center mission and to know how deeply he loved and was proud of his family. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to work with him.

Tom helped deepen my love for the city of Philadelphia. His commitment to serving it's people are one of the things that got me excited about working with the city health centers. I'm thankful for each opportunity I had to talk with him, whether it be about work projects, city happenings or sports. His leadership was formational to me, and I have deep gratitude for having been able to know him. The city health centers will continue our mission thanks to such much that he offered. Thank you Tom, you are already very missed.

I was fortunate to have met Tom's father, Pat, who was emblematic of the Marcus Welby era of medicine, smart, kind, and dedicated to public service. It is clear that much of that rubbed off on Tom.

I met Tom really from the beginning when he was a clinician at HC #6. Tom worked his way up to become head of Ambulatory Health Services. How rare is it to have a doctor so dedicated to serving the most vulnerable in our society that he would work for the Phila Health Centers for his entire professional life under an ever changing number of Commissioners? Some of the greatest, most dedicated physicians I have ever had the honor of working with worked in Family Medical Care which eventually became Ambulatory Health Services. It is a tribute to the physician leadership of Tom and the medical directors for the excellent quality of care given at the health centers. Tom was as many have noted, smart, kind, and most of all dedicated to the mission of serving those who needed our help. It is hard to put into words what a tremendous loss this is for AHS and for our city. My deepest sympthy to Joanne and the family.

I have so many memories of Tom, and many of the stories and descriptions here echo my own experiences. There are friends and there are true friends, and Tom was the latter. If you were lucky enough to be considered his friend, Tom was there for you completely.

Tom got me through the hardest time in my life. He was gentle and blunt at the same time; unfailingly honest; opinionated and "stuck in his ways" while being spontaneous, open, thoughtful, generous, and deeply, truly kind. He was also really funny, and we laughed long and hard.

Tom loved weather, which was a new concept for me. (What does it mean to love "weather?" I get what it means to love snow - which he did - but weather in general? Well, Tom explained that to me back in the day.) When he was in medical school, we used to talk on the phone - sometimes for hours - from our respective apartments in Philadelphia. One night while we'd already been talking for a long time, it started to snow, and Tom said he would come pick me up. We drove to the Philadelphia Art Museum for what became what we called the night of the giant snowflakes. Flakes the size of ping pong balls floated down from the sky, and we were mesmerized. That was a night I will never forget.

Another memory provides an example of Tom's willingness to help, quietly and without fanfare. My wedding was a bit of a homegrown affair, and we'd created a mixed tape (which Tom appreciated) for dancing. We forgot to bring our receiver, however, and Tom, who offered to set up the sound system, didn't say a word. He just went home to get his without letting me know. Had he not done this, we would have had no music or dancing. This meant that he missed the ceremony. That was Tom. I only found out later that he'd saved the day.

There were many things Tom said to me that shaped my character and my life. I won't share the details here (I wrote about some in my Psychology Today blog that I posted here last week), but suffice it to say that I might not be who I am or have done some of the things that were most seminal to my life had it not been for Tom.

One thing that I have shared with Tom's family that I think may be true for all of us who knew him well is that because Tom was so, well, Tom: so clear, often so wise, so willing to share what he thought and believed, and so loyal and loving, he lives on in a very powerful way inside those of us who knew and loved him. I feel like if I ever want to know Tom's opinion or hear his counsel, it will ring like a bell in my mind. I won't wonder. I'll know.

Anjan Chatterjee published a tribute .

I met Tom almost 40 years ago. We, and our close friends, were bound initially by our dislike of the soul sucking experience that was medical school. Forged in shared misery, our friendship evolved, deepened, and flourished through this transformative period. When I close my eyes, flashbulb memories from that time – dozing in the back of Stemmler auditorium, hanging at the bio-pond, cooking and eating together several times a week, escaping on trips, big and small, sharing a love of music (compelling us each to buy first generation Sony Walkman when none of us had money to spare), city kids wandering through nature, sunning in urban beaches, tossing a frisbee for hours, and laughing -- are as vivid now as if they happened yesterday. At a time when most of us were figuring out how to fit into our skin, Tom was the most assured of us – he remained one of the most self-assured people I have ever known. Back then, even at that tender age, he always seemed to know how he felt, what he wanted, and was guided by clear sense of right and wrong. He was warm. He was thoughtful. He was funny. Tom’s presence, his gravitation pull in the world, makes his loss incomprehensible.

I have had the distinct privilege of working closely with Tom for over 20 years. His love for his family was obvious as was his focus on the mission of AHS. Never a moment went by when we wouldn’t talk about the kids, his or mine, if there was a spare moment during a work meeting. Similarly there never was a question as to ‘ if ‘ we should deliver the highest quality of care to our patients at the health centers but ‘ how ‘ to make that happen despite scarcity of resources. Tom had an inherent ability to muster support from every possible organization within and outside PDPH that ultimately led to sustainability of health centers.
I believe Tom was a blessing and a gift of God to AHS and I feel certain he would be watching over AHS as well as undoubtedly his family.
Tom, thank you for spending so much of your valuable time on earth with AHS ! I seek solace in my faith that your guidance and influence will remain. You have accomplished more than anyone could imagine during your time with AHS and I thank you for all you have done for us and so many.
With affection and prayers, Kalpana

Dr. Storey leaves an extraordinary legacy of impactful accomplishment that benefitted his patients and the hundreds of thousands of Philadelphians who have the benefit of the Philadelphia Health Centers. I had the tremendous honor and privilege to work assisting Dr. Tom in the radiology and mammography departments of the Health Centers since 2004 and witnessed first-hand his unswerving commitment to the citizens of this great City. He led the way for the Health Centers to offer state-of-the-art 2D/3D mammography, thereby ensuring that women (and men) receive the highest quality of mammography screening available in the world. I remember when President Obama’s Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell visited Health Center 10 who had the highest praise for the Department of Ambulatory Care, which Dr. Storey led with distinction for so many years. Indeed, Dr. Storey will be missed by countless colleagues and patients, but his legacy will live on in perpetuity!

I never got to know him well, but we did share some lunches at the then Hardee's in Houston Hall, and on the Quad. I am lucky to be able to call Tom my uncle (AKA Uncle T). He was truly an outstanding father, uncle, and all around family-man. I had the privilege of growing up going to see Uncle T and my glorious cousins most weekends. Because I grew up with it, I wasn’t entirely aware of Uncle Tom’s unique ability to create a space that felt warm, welcoming, and safe. It wasn’t until I went off to college and returned to see Uncle T and the family for Christmas that I became acutely aware of the impact that his season-specific decorated home had on all of us. You step foot in the Storey household and you know you’re welcome. Uncle T, I love you, I miss you, and thank you for teaching me about the power of creating safe and welcoming spaces. Tom Storey made our book club meetings at his and Joanne's home a delightful excursion. His decorations at Halloween (my personal favorite) and Christmas were extraordinary. Tom captured all of our imaginations with his Halloween and Christmas village displays. I wanted to live in one of those villages. He made us all feel special and welcomed. The table settings were like something you would see on the cover of a magazine. His garden with its flowers and plants in season and then with its lights and seasonal decorations were enchanting. A little bit of magic left Havertown with Tom but I will remember and think of him when I pass their driveway. I will remember looking up the driveway to see if his Halloween display was up yet, or his Christmas lights were on yet, or if he had started planting his garden in spring, and then checking to see if the flowers, plants and shrubs had taken off . Tom Storey inspired me. I am grateful for Tom and the beauty he created and shared. He had a wonderful imagination. Love to Joanne and Family.

Dear Joanne (Dr Joanne Storey),

I am truly sorry to hear of Tom's death. I am speechless. It was so fast, like a roller coaster whose brakes fail on the downward slope, so very unexpected that he would get so ill and it would runaway with him as a reluctant passenger.

I was very moved by the tribute paid to Tom by his boss which my sister Cathy forwarded to me. It makes you realize that not all doctors in the US want to be millionaires and public spiritedness is a much needed antidote at the moment. In that Tom excelled...and at growing plants and flowers to brighten our world.

It is hard to find comfort in this ghastly year we have had but as a scientist (I think of doctors as such) you can take solace and Tom surely would have in the vaccines which should be a game changer.

You are in my heart and thoughts as are your children and I hope you can find the strength and courage to carry forward away from this exceedingly bleak moment.

Love,

Maureen McCue
(My parents were Tom's parents best friends from the Bronx--met as small children at Sacred Heart grammar School in High Bridge and my Grandmother, Adele McCue, supported Dr Patrick Storey, Tom's father. thorough medical school with what resources she had)--Pat's parents wanted him to be a priest not a doctor). Pat and Mary were my sister Catherine's Godparents. And my sister and Tom were great friends. A long history back to 1920 in NYC.
