Tom Stout

15 febrero, 1957 - 18 marzo, 2022

Biografía

Thomas Ralph Stout passed away suddenly on March 18th, 2022 in South Florida at the age of 65. A quick afternoon flight with close friend Rich Preiser resulted in a tragic, accidental crash that took both of their lives. Despite our pain, we're somewhat comforted knowing that our heroes died while doing what they loved.

Tom served in the Marine Corps as a helicopter mechanic and crew chief, performing repairs and routine maintenance on the UH-1H HUEY and Cobra attack helicopters. He studied aviation maintenance technology at Embry-Riddle and worked extensively on fighter and rocket engines for seven years at Pratt & Whitney. Eventually, he transitioned into the industrial aeroderivative trade and established his own company, Turbo Services, which rapidly became an industry leader in the Pratt & Whitney FT4 market. His company was recently acquired by Sulzer and he was just 1 year away from full retirement. He has been awarded countless achievements and recognitions throughout his life.

Tom took his experience with aviation from the ground to the sky, working hard to become an accomplished commercial airplane, seaplane and helicopter pilot. At the time of his death, he had a full stable of aircraft – his treasured De Havilland Turbine Beaver seaplane, a retired military Hughes OH-6 helicopter and UH-1H HUEY helicopter. The HUEY was especially important for him to own and fly, a true bucket list item after his relevant experience as a Marine crew chief on this very same aircraft.

With his tireless work ethic and endless jokes, Tom brought joy and inspiration to everyone he met. He was a skilled mechanic, dive master, cherished mentor, devoted friend and so much more. He is survived by his fiancé Crissy Whetstone, daughter Lexi Stout (husband Dustin West), pup sons Hagen and Ralphie as well as brother Doug (son Justin Stout), sister Karen Hughes (husband Patrick and daughter Christy) extended family, and many, many friends.

I first met Tom in 1986 when we were working at Pratt & Whitney. We were part of group of young guys just starting careers and families. We were far from rich but didn't care. The times we spent together in those formative years were truly unforgettable. So many highlights - scuba diving, lobster fest parties, etc. Tom was a big part of all of our lives back then. So funny, so generous. Just an all-around good guy. So many great memories. I feel fortunate to have been able to know him as a friend.

Tom was my neighbor for ten years at the airport. I want to make a list of his traits that I have never seen in another human being.
1.He never lost his temper.
2. I spent dozens of nights in his hanger, and he was the most giving person I ever met.
3. He was always soft spoken for a man of his statue.
4. He would help anyone in the community, he could not take no for an answer.
5. He was a pristine clean person! His home and planes were perfect.
6. Every time he took me for a flight, he was extremely caucus and made sure all passengers were enjoying the view of the South FL landscape. He flew slow and safe.
7. Any guest in his home, he them feel like a person he truly cared for.
8. He never raised his voice, never.
9.Tom and Rich where the heartbeat of Antiquers Aerodrome. Everyone knows it. They were the two men who "wanted Love"
Of all the people who posted, I thank you. I will be in deep pain for the rest of my life. The last text I got from Tom was wishing my family Merry Christmas, and said that he cared deeply about me. He & Rich were class acts. I am Sorry Peggy.
Life is not fair and I will pray for him and his family for the rest of my life.

I simply bought Tom’s Hewes Redfisher in 2012. We kept on touch. When my daughter decided to become a pilot, it was Tom who patiently listened to my concerns and offered advice on purchasing a plane. I work Fire/Rescue in the Acreage and just today found out who the pilots were. I’m deeply saddened. He was a fun and generous man. I will miss our talks.

My sadness couldn't even be expressed and I couldn't contribute to this memoir of Tom until now. Whenever I think of Tom, I feel as if it is all just a bad dream. There have been three months since his tragic accident, and now it seems like family is empty without him. He was an amazing guy to everyone he knew. Tom's dry sense of humor was enjoyable. His talent, intelligence, and modesty were outstanding. Our teenage boys looked up to him as an idol. We loved the time Tom and Crissy took us diving at Alligator Lighthouse when we were in the keys. It was the most amazing underwater experience I have ever had. Even though it was shallow (not for me), Tom pulled me down because I couldn't get to the bottom of 10-15 feet and showed me the picturesque underwater world and he forgot to tell me that the pressure would pop my ears, but they were fine within a few days. Tom's life will never be the same without him, but I know we will all meet him one day. Tom, we miss you so much! Rest in peace! Claudia Whetstone and family

Tom was so generous not just to his own friends but also to Crissy's friends. Whenever I stopped by the house to visit Crissy, I would hear Tom yell, "Hey, it's Jenay-nay!" I have many memories of times spent in the tiki hut drinking Kraken (something I ONLY drank when visiting Crissy and Tom was around), but the one memory that will always stand out is that Tom is the reason I learned to scuba dive. About five years ago (ish) Brooke Place and I visited Crissy and Tom in the Keys, and Tom took us out on the boat. We took a trip to Alligator Reef. I told Tom I was scared of the water and didn't want to snorkel, but he threw gear on the boat for me anywhere. Once we got out to the reef, he looked at me and handed me fins and a mask. When I protested that I didn't want to do it, he said something along the lines of, What are you, a pussy? So then of course I had to go in. He put a weight belt on me, gave me a hookah line, and pretty much tossed me in the water. I will always be so thankful to him for doing this, because he introduced me to a whole new world that I immediately fell in love with. He actually had to jump in the water to come get me because I didn't want to come up. The next week when I returned home to Fort Lauderdale I called a local dive store and signed up for my certification. A few years later, I became a Dive Master. Thank you, Tom. I will always think of you whenever I dive.

I had a flight out of Hartford to arrive for Tom's celebration tomorrow but it was cancelled and it doesn't look now like I'll make it. My regrets!

I met Tom in the 1990's while he was working at the Power Turbine Repair shop for TP&M. We worked together on a lot of machines over the years. It cost me my hair and what youth I had left but I always had lots of fun with him. Any time I would come up with an approach to try in a repair, he'd try to accommodate it, but mostly, he'd wonder aloud what I'd been smokin'. After all, I WAS from Fresno!
We were both pilots and I always looked forward to flying with him. The photos above were from our last trip out to the test cell, I'm wondering now - if I was taking THAT picture, and he was filming the scenery, which one of us was flying the plane? He told me once he didn't think of me as a customer much anymore, but as a friend. I'll always be grateful for what time and we got to share and those sundowners at the hangar after a particularly rough repair job. I often hoped he'd be landing that float plane on the lake near my place on his way to or from Alaska and I'd get to return some small part of the hospitality and friendship he showed me all the time. Fair winds buddy!!! Rest in peace.

Tom was my bestest friend ever. We met in the mid 80’s and our relationship grew over the years. I think it was better and stronger than being family. We never argued. Together we laughed and had fun.

When he was told about his cancer he called me. We cried together on the phone. We both vowed we are not going to let it beat him. We are in it together.. He beat it.

On a lighter note . One time we hunted over in Mississippi. We decided to test shoot our rifles. Tom mentioned that he got a marksman badge in the marines. When he test fired his 30-06 he stayed looking down for about 10 seconds before he looked around to show us where the scope of rifle hit his forward. I immediately snapped a photo. He knew he would see this photo on occasion. I did not disappoint him. He always got it around Christmas time and any other time I felt it was appropriate. It brings me to tears to say “This is the last time I will use it “.

He will be missed by this guy more than either of us know. I feel his presence everyday.

RIP

Back in 1998 I was visiting Jet Turbine Service for an Overhaul of a FT4A free turbine to audit for a customer of mine. Of course I at first met Tom and Pete Lo Bello the owner. Both were more than nice to me. Just remember all of the great dinners and fun that we all shared at that point, but I also had to deal with business in Miami and such so I could no spend as much time together with them that I really wanted to then...... But Pete was looking for a shop Manager at the time and offered me a job, so He brought my family down to Fl. for a long weekend to check everything out, I just remember going out on Toms small boat one day , and he said, HEY BUBBY the water is warm, here is a snorkel and mask go for a swim. So off I went down deep, but the water above was filled with a lot of jelly fish and could not surface properly, so Tom decided to scare them away I I came out of breath of course. (LOL) But all on board were in Chuckles and Toms wife said to me welcome to paradise! All I know is that Me and Tom became very, Very Good friends to this sad day, Both went to Embry Riddle, prior military, advent divers, Boat Captains, Pilots, Jokers of course and well groomed mechanics. So we decided to take the job of course. As a team, we built up the engine shop at JTS, the first engine was a delight for both of us, not having much at the time to work with the small team was able to produce and test a very good engine for our customer at that time. There is so much more funny stories that I remember that no one can believe, cant make this up. So here comes some of Toms antics: Toms wife at the time, decided to buy an African Tree Male cat and named him Kocomunga. Well one day I came into my shared office @ 5 am with Larry Frazine I knowticed a small jar on my desk with something inside it, Larry Laughed and siad ask TOM about it, A few hours later Tom coms out to our office to see how everything was going, I said all is fine, but what the hell is this on my desk?? He stated, come on Mike, those are Kocomunga balls, his cat got fixed, put them in a jar and planted them the night before. I told him, payback is not going to be very fun for you my good friend. Like I said Tom and I were great Happy go lucky friends and Co-workers for about 24 years! Not to get off of the Jokes, too many from him, too little time and always not meant for the internet as all of you may know.
As we all know he dearly loved his Daughter Lexie, such a bright young beautiful girl at the age I believe when I met her of 8 or so, I may be wrong. Lexie I hope you are reading this and you have a special place in your Dads heart forever, along with all of us still down he to enjoy you! Just remember that Dad is now flying with the angles and awaiting you some day to board his plane. Tom has always wanted the best for you, and just remember that we all want the same. I hope your Mom is also ok at this moment, I do remember her also when you were just a child, but your all grown up now.
All I want to finish with is talking more about Tom Stout. One this was his pranks and jokes will be with me forever! In fact I use a lot of them on people to this day, I call them TOMISSUMS fair enough huh. Tom and I were close work partners, friends and of course jokers all the time. Unfortunately the last time I saw Tom was at his test cell with a customer of mine, After the engine tested good, lunch was fed ,Tom said lets go Flying so I sat in the back of the beaver took off over the everglades, then tom let Ron fly , bad idea, I kept asking Tom for a ralph bad, Tom said, you can handle it bubba, buck up, finally he gave me one and of course we laughing the whole time.
I know it was not to be story time, but that is just what Tom would want at his memorial Ceremony in his hanger with all of his family and friends, too many is not enough!!!!!
Saying this, I just want to send out a deep blessing to his family, close friends, and also to our beloved Tom R. Stout in Heven, that we will always remember him, and this too shall pass.
See you soon my good friend, loved you like a brother,
Michael

We first met Tom when he was our neighbor in Parkland and have remained friends since then. This is one of several trips he made to visit us when we moved to our lake house in Lake Placid. He and Ralph came one year on Fourth of July when we had a houseful of people as did all of our neighbors. Tom offered to take everyone for rides around the lake in the Beaver. Ami almost had a heart attack when Ralph told her to leave the door open during takeoff. We became very popular with our neighbors after that day.

I came into this family in 2011 to be a companion to Tom’s mother, Helen. In the 10 years I was with Helen, I experienced over and over again Tom’s love and devotion to his Mother and his generosity to family and friends. He told me that he promised his Dad before he died that he would take care of his Mom. He told me no matter what it is, he will do for her. And he did! My most cherished memory is the day we had to tell Helen that I was moving home to Pennsylvania. Tom and I hugged and and I could hear his gentle sobs in my ear. I will never forget that! He knew that I loved his Mother like my own. Tom will be missed by so many. I feel blessed to have known him through these years and be a part of this family. Thank you, Crissy and Lexi for your love, also. May God bless and comfort all of you. ❤️

Tommy and I go back nearly 25 years when he was my customer and later he joined my company (JTS) and along with a bunch of talented individuals, built the largest independent aeroderivative engine repair company. Working everyday with Tom was an adventure as I found him to be serious, funny and a very emotional guy. The highlight of the day was going out to lunch as Tommy always insisted on driving so we could drive thru the neighborhoods looking at what people were throwing away. Every once and awhile, he would stop, get out of the truck and throw something in the back. After awhile I never questioned what he was going to do with that junk. It was clear to me his life revolved around Lexi and his career. When he had Lexi, she went where he did. Whether it was on the boat or at the beach, she was always in tow. He took my son Pete Jr. under his wing and taught him to repair engines and the like. We parted company when I sold JTS and he never forgave me and left to start his own. He wasn't too happy with me at that point but I reminded him that now he had his own company and could bring aboard some the individuals that would make his company great. The same thing I had experienced some years earlier in Texas. Unfortunately, he never got over it and later we became competitors which didn't help. In my heart I always thought of Tommy as my friend first and competitor second. May he rest in peace and leave that junk alone up there.
GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN.

Mikael Lansio published a tribute .

It was in 2007 when I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Tom for the first time for work. Already then, his warm character, remarkable hospitality and impeccable sense of humor made for an everlasting first impression. A couple of years later, in 2009 our family came to Florida for a vacation. And although we had a fantastic time in Disney World and all the other lovely attractions in the first half of our holiday, the best was yet to come.

Towards the end of our first family trip to the Sunshine State we paid a visit to Tom, who was very generous with his time and brought us to Key West for the weekend. Back then we also had the privilege of meeting you, Lexi. The hospitality demonstrated by you and your father was unlike any we have encountered before. When we got back home from the US, we asked our six and ten-year-old kids what their favorite experiences from our trip were. Without hesitation, both of them voted for that incredible weekend in Key West. At the time our daughter Anniina did not speak a word of English - yet somehow, Tom was able to connect with her and they even had their own little inside jokes.

Two years later we came back for another visit. Despite Tom being very busy with moving house back then, he made sure that he could spend some time with us once again, and took myself and my son Niklas for a plane ride - an experience that neither one of us will ever forget. Another special moment from this trip was when Tom invited us to watch the 4th of July fireworks of Delray Beach by the shore - another unforgettable moment that will forever hold a special place in the hearts of our family.

Having experienced these levels of hospitality and kindness, we could not help but feel like we needed to figure out what we could do to ever pay him back - even partially. So we made a deal - We promised that the next time Tom was to visit Finland, a dish of sautéed reindeer would be on us. Unfortunately, this promise remains unredeemed to this day. Lexi, if you ever find yourself in Finland, it would be an honor to have you help us redeem this promise with you in your father?s memory.

About 10 years ago , my son Donny Jr. , was preparing to head off for his first year of college and had gone up to visit and go fly with Tom’s neighbor John. After they had returned , John had introduced Donny to Tom and they enjoyed talking aviation and about embry riddle where he was going to attend in the fall. After talking for awhile , Tom was kind enough to offer Donny a job thru the summer working at his business. I remember him coming home that day and being so excited about everything that had happened . The biggest thrill ,for him ,came when Tom invited him to fly out to the engine testing area and they went in the Beaver! What a great time especially when Tom let him fly!!! He always said what an awesome plane the Beaver was ! What an awesome summer that was and a great inspiration for Donny to pursue his career in aviation. Thanks for all the kindness and sharing your love for flying ! The aviation world lost two great guys! Stacey and I would like to express our deepest condolences and our prayers for everyone effected by the passing of Tom and Rich.

Lexi - Yes, your Dad decided Philodendron was better than Philly-Cheesesteak:) He cracked me up with that one.
He was a driven man living the American dream. Self-made...
I was only fortunate enough to be his friend for the last year but we spent a lot of time together strategizing the P&W business.
While with P&W, he was proud to have worked on the RL10 Centaur rocket engine early in his career.
Tom was an accomplished diver, sea captain, pilot, mechanic, self-taught the guitar, and many other impressive accomplishments.
He talked about you (Lexi) nearly every conversation we had.
Began every phone call with Yo.
Often said - “Have to Pay Attention” - he was all about the details
Knew the origins of many sayings including “the whole 9 yards” and “two peas in a pod”, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water”,
Endless jokes, mostly all good.
Tom would always end a phone call with “Be Good!”
BE GOOD TOM

Philodendron – you must be so proud to have such an epic nickname bestowed upon you ;-) And yes I hope I can hear his sayings as clearly as I do now for the rest of my life. He always called me Lexi Louis so I would get calls all the time with "Howdy Louis..." "Yo Louis..." hah. And ya end with "Love ya, be good!" :-)))))

When I met you for the first time I knew that there was something extra special about you, not just they way you loved my best friend Crissy. Although I’m grateful for the many years, dinners, trips, concerts and incredible laughs, I can’t help but be sad for all of amazing plans that aren’t going to happen. You never met a stranger, always wanting/willing to help anyone, had the best sense of humor and collected people for a life time of friendship. I’m comforted knowing that you lived your best life and left this world with a great friend by your side doing one of the things you loved. Everyone who was lucky enough to know you was better for it. You were one of the good ones, We love you, you were family and our hearts are broken without you. I’ll never understand why tragedy takes the good ones way too soon just know that we are here for your girls and will not let them fall,, Rest In Peace

I met Tom about 4 years ago as Turbo Services was performing maintenance on one of out FT4's at one of the power plants I support. He was always first class to not only me, but all people/customers I saw him interface with. Tom was always willing to help, go out of his way to educate you on all the aspects of the twin packs, honored all his deals, send you parts you needed in a jam and work out the payment later, not afraid to get dirty with you fixing the engines, and many other great working qualities. He made it worth while working on the old FT4's knowing he would always pick up ca call or face time to guide me to excellence! When our plant people came to Florida to see their engine's in the shop & test cell, he made everyone feel like they were Kings. Like I said, I only knew Tom 4 years, but I always felt like I was talking to my 5th brother. I pray for all of God's help for all his family and friends, during these times and in the future. I will forever cherish my MANY great times with Tom!!! A quote from Tom as I was attempting to fly the sea plane and keep it level. The plane had gradually dropped ~ 1000 ft. "Hey Jon, did you notice that items on the ground are getting larger? You can go back up now."

A couple months ago I was looking for a private hanger for a photoshoot for my client-a young boy that was obsessed with airplanes. Crissy offered her home to me and I decided to have my 2 young boys as well tag along. Crissy and Tom opened their home to us and made us feel like home having each boy jump in and out of their aircrafts, taking pictures, playing with the dogs and having a wonderful day. Just when we thought the day couldn’t go any better, they pulled out their golf carts had us all jump on and drove us down the road for even more. Their amazing friend Richard then opened his home to us, again with gorgeous aircrafts and cars….boy the cars!!! Richard had my boys jump in and out of his precious cars (Ferrari) just as if it was a Toyota Camry not a precious car as it was. We could have stayed all day and they acted as if they would have wanted us too. Richard, knowing I’m a photographer gave me some photography books he was discarding and asked if I would like them. We met once but the impact both these men had on mine and my children's lives is just incredible. Their generosity is unmatched and we couldn’t be more sorry for your loss. I know the pain is unbearable but if there’s any comfort in knowing how special these two men are and how a stranger is hurting and praying along side of you all. I can only imagine how incredibly lucky it was to have them in your life for so long. Prayers during such an incredibly hard time being sent your way.

I met Tom over 25 years ago when I knew nothing about a gas turbine. He was truly someone with a passion for the industry. He helped me get there and certainly helped my company succeed with our GG4 business. He was not only a business partner but also a great friend. We always joked that when I first met him I said where are your socks - he said Chris my dear we don't wear socks in South Florida. He will truly be missed and I will always treasure our long conversations. His life ended doing what he truly loved. Fly high Tom you have earned your wings. Prayers for the family.

It was a pleasure meeting Tom about 30 years ago at a company called JTS. My company was one of the vendor's to provide a service for the gg4 gas turbine. I remember I meet Tom out side of the shipping gate, and what brought me to him was that we whould were Penny loafers and I was making fun of him and he took my jokes like a man and fired back with great and funny responses. After we broke the ice that faithfully day he told me later that he wanted to open his own gas turbine shop, and so he did a grew with style and with lots of hard work. In those days i became one of his biggest vendors and grew grew to be great friend's. One of the things I whould never is that he loved cashews and always had a gallon jug hanging out in his office. And it whould be a day that we wouldn't offer me a hand full. We whould always talk about his float plane and the diffent adventures he whould have. The stories we're so interesting and inspiring that I decided to get a pilots license so I can join him in the sky. Thank you Tom for the inspiration and all the great memories. You will be missed broski. You man George Castro.

I first met Tom in September 2019. A ride in his DeHavilland DHC-2 inspired me to earn my private pilot seaplane rating a few months later.

In the following years, Tom rode as an observer on a number of aerial survey flights with us. I came to appreciate "his tireless work ethic and endless jokes". It saddens me to hear of his passing.

Seeing that Tom had a life well lived may be the inspiration through which I will resume my own pursuit of flying.

I consider Crissy to be one of my best friends. Long distance nowadays ...but we can pick up where we left off like it was yesterday. I've seen and lived thru a lot of her ups and downs, and I can promise there was never a "down" after she met Tom. A long time ago, I was going thru some personal stuff, grabbed my dog and drove 4.5 hours one morning to see Crissy. It was my first time meeting Tom and he was welcoming and had a drink ready for me right at 5 o clock. My dog absolutely fell in love with him and I will never forget how he sat in one spot under the tiki for who knows how long because she was sleeping in his lap and he didn't want to disturb her. I knew right then that Tom was someone that Crissy deserved to have in her life and I couldn't have been happier for her. Another memorable encounter with Tom was a few years later when he wanted to plan a surprise birthday party for Crissy. Huge bonus points again for all the effort he put into a surprise party for one of the smartest/quickest to catch on people I know.... Cheers to Tom for even ATTEMPTING to surprise Crissy let alone pulling it off. (Anyone that knows Crissy KNOWS) I was 110 percent convinced he was Crissy's "person" after that weekend. I know these aren't exciting stories but they are just a couple little tiny memories I was lucky enough to know and remember about Tom. Quiet, hilarious without even trying, caring, generous, and SO SO KIND... The world needs more Tom Stout's in it.

Tom was the most thoughtful person. I stayed many a winter with his Mom ( my sister Helen). Tom would bring us all kinds of gadgets to inmprove our life. He and Crissy often brought us lunch . A couple days before his birthday, Tom called me just to see how his old aunt was doing. I will miss his humor.

My comment .. a very kind and generous guy. I met him 8 years ago through Brooke and, the first time we met, he said come over Monday morning at 9:00 AM we're going flying. In the air, he said "See that hole in the clouds .. head for it. You're flying this thing.". We had a few adventures after that when we were visiting Brooke. I only wish that we'd been able to get Tom and Crissy up to Canada for a visit. I wanted to take him deer hunting and return some of the hospitality that we always got when we were with him. I will miss him!!
