Kaelan Shallow

Biografía

Kaelan Shallow was born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 25th, 1994. He was welcomed into the world by his parents, Gale and Michael Shallow, his sisters, Parvati and Sodashi Shallow, grandparents, aunts, uncles and myriads of cousins.

Kaelan passed away November 11, 2020 in Toronto, Ontario Canada.

Kaelan was a vivacious, joyful child - full of life’s energy and a mischievous playful spirit. Kaelan carried that spirit with him throughout his life.

He loved his friends, cooking & sharing good food, animals, and seemed most at home hiking in the woods, climbing mountains, camping, and spending time in nature.

Kaelan had a keen intellect, a wonderful sense of humor, and a deeply honest way of seeing and being in the world.

He cared deeply about the people he knew and loved and who befriended him along his journey through life. He gave the best hugs.

Kaelan was a talented musician. He could hear a song on the radio, pick up the guitar, and play the song. Over the years he played a variety of instruments including guitar, ukulele, banjolini, mandolin, upright bass, and keyboard. He had a love of the unique and unusual. He enriched our lives every time he shared the new bands and songs he loved along with his own musical creations.

Kaelan earned a black belt in Tae Kwan Do and the Arrow of Light award in Cub Scouts.  In his earlier years he loved skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing, catch and release fishing, and riding bikes.

Kaelan graduated from High School in Johns Creek. He attended Northview High, Johns Creek High, and completed his education at Eaton Academy in Roswell, Georgia.

Kaelan was deeply loved by his family – including his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He spent many summertime weeks with his grandparents, relatives, and friends in Colebrook, NH at the farm and in Pittsburg, NH.  He had many wonderful visits to see his West Coast grandparents and cousins in California.

Kaelan’s love of adventure took him on a journey across the U.S. and into Canada. He traveled in many unorthodox ways: hitchhiking, riding freight trains and meeting like-minded people doing the same. His travels took him through places many of us will never see - to almost every state in the U.S. and many of the provinces of Canada. He met people he would never have met and made many great friendships and lasting bonds along the way.

It was amazing to hear his stories. He talked about the kindness and graciousness of the strangers who helped him along the way during his travels. He shared tales of the ingenuity, daring, and perseverance that he and his fellow travelers used to work through some crazy situations.

Kaelan had a long and difficult struggle with addiction which he attempted to overcome many times. His trials, battles, and hardships opened our eyes to his incredible depth of feeling and the compassion required to support other individuals and their loved ones who are impacted by this dis-ease.

Kaelan spent his last year in Toronto. He loved Canada and Canadians and made some wonderful and special friendships while he was there.  He felt cared for, supported, and loved by the harm reduction community there – and believed in the work they are doing to support people who were struggling as he did. We have included a link in this memorial to enable anyone who wishes to do so to contribute to one of the organizations in Canada that support harm reduction.

Kaelan knew truly what it means to empathize, to love, and to love unconditionally. If you needed him and he was able to, he’d be there for you. He had the courage to have the hard conversations in life that show true maturity and growth and he didn’t hide his feelings. He was a good man.

Kaelan is survived by his mother and father and sisters who miss him deeply and are grateful for the time we had with him and all the joy, pain, challenge, struggle and compassion he brought us through the years. Our lives and the lives of all he touched are richer for Kaelan’s presence.

I miss you more than words can describe my brother. I’ll love you forever. I’m sorry to your family for the pain of your loss. I still feel it myself every day. Even in death I keep learning from you my brother. People like us don’t have to give up, we can keep fighting and I’m gonna prove it. I can’t wait to see you on the other side but you’re gonna have to wait a while for me. I love you Kaelan, and I love your family. We got our first and my only tattoos together.

A couple nights ago I had a dream.
Kaelan and I stood on the edge of a grassy slope. It overlooked an expanse of sky and land below us. Long green grasses covered the hillside laid down from past wind and rain. At a distance below us to our right a group of grey haired women talked and laughed. We watched as one silver haired lady left the group and walked up the hill toward our left. We clearly saw her smile of joy and heard her laugh as she called out, “See what I can do now!”
She then tucked her chin into her chest, leaped forward into a somersault and rolled like a spinning ball down the hillside toward the group of ladies. She stopped just in front of them laughing. All of us were impressed and amazed.
She then got up and again walked up the hill toward our left. As she walked by we could see light pulsating from deep within her legs. By the time she got near us her hands glowed and her fingertips were piercingly bright. She then sat down, looked at her hands of light, and seemed to wonder what to do.
Suddenly, she reached up and drew a ring of light around her head and then quickly drew an arc of light to connect the back of the ring to the front. In less than a second her whole body glowed bright and she vanished. Silently Kaelan and I walked over to where she had sat. Nothing but the green grasses remained. Then I woke up.

I remember Kaelen as a beautiful, smart, funny, crazy young man. I loved watching my son Julian and Kaelen do goofy middle school stuff. I really loved the time we went to my friend Jamey’s loft in Atlanta. We were on the rooftop patio and Kaelen really wanted to sprint across the unfinished roof. We finally convinced him that the folks living underneath might not be too happy about a young boy stomping on their ceiling!! Julian and Kaelen seemed to just get each other at times when others may not have. He will be missed dearly. I’ve enclosed the last picture I have taken of Sam, Julian, and Kaelen when they were around 18 years old. All of these boys embarked on very different journeys, I will always cherish the memories I have of this beautiful soul.

I met Kaelan in high school, and we became instant friends. His humor and warmth was contagious, and his friendship was truly one of the longest and sincerest of my life. He helped shape formative years of my youth and he made me a better person, as I believe he did everyone who had the fortune to know him. I will feel forever grateful I got to know and love him because he is like no other person who ever lived. He changed my life, and every life he touched. He’ll be eternally missed.

This is the start of Kaelan’s wild hair for me when I came for a visit and we went to 6 flags with Gale and Mike. He was just as goofy and funny then. I truest cherished our time and always had fun with you Kaelan. You were truly like a little brother to me. ❤️

I met Kaelen through my daughter Sarah (Raine) and right away I could see a gentle soul in him. I could tell thst Sarah and Kaelen shared a special bond and that they cared deeply for each other. I was touched by how Kaelen would cook for Sarah and take her dog on long walks with her and for her when she wasnt able to due to school or work. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

I remember showing Kaelan the granite quarry on Meriden hill. The quarry had several 2” diameter drill holes in it all filled with various amounts of water from a rain storm. He went around and drummed with his hands over the holes of different pitches making a cool sounding melody. Yes he could play anything, even rocks!

Kaelan came to visit me in Los Angeles staying with me off and on from the Fall of 2018 to the Summer of 2019. We had a really good time making good food/ eating dinner together and he rocked it in my kitchen - especially when he made the candy ginger graham cracker crust and I did the filling from scratch of the best pumpkin pie in the world - just ask our sister's in-laws who ate it all up on Thanksgiving 2018 ;) (We decided to knock off a local restaurant recipe and he made that crust better than they did. I don't think I'll ever be able to duplicate the magic he put into it, but I'll sure as hell try next year.)

I met Kaelan randomly on his travels through Canada, and then almost two years later he settled in the same city I was living. We had some incredible times over this last summer, lots of hike and a few late night drives just talking about life. I wish we could have gone for more. Kaelan you were one of my closest friends thank you for showing me sledge metal and for always making me laugh. I miss you

Kaelan's father was my high school math teacher, and through that connection I became friends with Kaelan on Facebook over a decade ago, in 2009. We never met in person, but I was always fond of the various adventures Kaelan had traveling all over North America. I truly have never had a friend with as interesting of a life as Kaelan did. I will miss his incredible spirit for adventure and exploration.

Kaelan visited me and met his little baby niece Ama Ruby around Christmas time in 2018. It was so special to have that time with him. As many of you may know, Kaelan wasn't the biggest fan of babies, but he really hit it off with Ama. And, he fully fit in as a Venice Beach dad here pushing the stroller.

My strongest memories of Kaelan are from his childhood and the adventures he shared with Sam. Kaelan was such a dynamic, energetic, inquisitive, personable, and funny kid! Always smart, quirky, and adventurous- his basement was a favorite hangout for Sam who shared his love of ninja stars and the Tasmanian Devil dog named Chester! I’m thankful for having known him and for the treasured friendship between our families that grew out of a first grade connection. He was deeply loved by all who knew him and has certainly left an indelible and lasting imprint on our hearts.
