Josie Apilado Banez passed away while surrounded by her loving family in her home on Saturday, August 28, 2021, after a long battle with breast cancer. Josie was a loving mother, daughter, sister, auntie, “Glamma” and dear friend. She is survived by her children, Joshua Banez, Joseph Banez (Aissa), and Julian Banez (Shelby); her granddaughter Sophia Banez; her siblings Mila Abella (Jun), Joaquin Apilado (Jocelyn), Lourdes DeVigal (Anthony), Veronica San Nicolas (Tony), and David Apilado (Gabriela); and her mother Julieta Apilado. She is preceded in death by her father, Jose Campamones Apilado, Ed.D.
Josie was born on April 30, 1961, in Joplin, Missouri. She loved spending time with her family and friends, laughing and sharing stories and jokes over a great meal, and spending quality time with her granddaughter.
Josie earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Services and a Master of Science in Management from the University of Phoenix. For many years, Josie was an enrollment counselor at the University of Phoenix, then at the University of San Francisco. Throughout her career, she was able to impact the lives of countless people as she dedicated her time and energy to helping others further their education and find success in life.
Arrangements for Josie are under the direction of Twin Chapels in Vallejo, CA. Funeral Mass will be held in the chapel at All Souls Cemetery at 550 Glen Cove Rd, Vallejo, CA, 94591, at 11 AM on Friday, September 10, 2021, with interment to follow. Father Glenn Jaron of St. Catherine of Siena will officiate the ceremony. Due to the restrictions imposed related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the indoor funeral mass will be reserved for the immediate family. The mass will be live-streamed via Zoom (link will be available on the "Events" tab). Those who wish to join the immediate family in paying their final respects at Josie’s graveside may join the procession from the chapel to the interment site at All Souls Cemetery shortly after 12 noon. Josie wished that those who attend wear navy, gray, or brown in her honor instead of the traditional black.
In lieu of flowers, Josie’s family is collecting donations for the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program in her memory. Donations can be made at https://gofund.me/5ed21383. Sympathy cards can be sent to her son, Julian Banez, at 1108 Evelyn Lane, Apt D, Sacramento, CA 95864.
Due to the ongoing restrictions related to COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no reception after the interment ceremony. The family will resume the 9-day Novena on Monday, September 27, 2021, through Thursday, October 7, 2021, to conclude the first 40 days after Josie’s passing.

What a beautiful woman with a big and kind spirit and heart. We are all at a loss without Josie's warmth and care. During my years on the Hilltop, the university's diversity engagement and community outreach office was below hers. Running into Josie in the hallway was always fun. Sending her family our love. Mary

Josie's incredible laugh is ringing in my ears. She was one of my first friends at USF when I started work there in 2015. We took the shuttle in every morning, a ritual that meant she had a daily place in my life. She made me feel loved and important, and I imagine everyone who had the good fortune to be around her feels the same. Love you, Josie <3

My first friends. My sistercousins. I’ll miss Ate Jo’s physical presence. She made me laugh out loud, listened to me when I needed her, held me tight when I needed to cry and made me blush with some of the things she would say! She was one spicy, sassy lady and I will miss bringing her bacon cheeseburgers. Thank you Ate for blessing us with Josh, Joe and Julian. Your legacy will live on through them, Aissa, Shelby and Sophia.

I’ll forever love Josie, the best mother in [LOVE] a girl could ask for. She always had the best advice and always seemed to have incredible wisdom to share in any situation.
I’ll miss her dearly. I’ll miss FaceTiming her with baby Sophia and watching them play with one another.
I’ll miss hearing her laugh and the funny stories she would share (oftentimes at her own expense).
My heart is broken knowing that I won’t be able to have the late night chats we used to have.
Josie, I want you to know that Sophia and all your future grandbabies will know about their Guardian Angel Glamma and will love you so so much. Please watch down on us. Guide us and remind us that everything will be ok. We know we have tough times ahead and it will be hard without you, but you raised incredible boys who will take care of one another. Your daughters in LOVE will make sure of it!
I’ll do my best to control what I can as you always told me to.
Until we meet again, sweet Mama Josie!
