It's hard to express how much of an impact John had on the people around him and those he worked with. He was beloved and deeply treasured by a lot of people. It might be hard to understand for people who aren't in the tech-sector he helped create but John was literally a legendary figure in the SEO industry. He was one of the first people to develop the sector. To say John was an original is to put the start of SEO around 1995. He was one of the pioneers of the industry, working websites back in the mid-90s on Netscape, and IE versions 1.whatever. He knew the first alphabet of search from Alta Vista to Excite and Yahoo!. John was around when Google lifted the concept of paid search from Overture. He wrote (with clarity) about a fundamentally different Google update named Florida in 2003, and was helping organize countless local meetups long before meetups were really a thing. In the early days, he wrote for everyone including iMedia, Search Engine Journal, Search Engine Watch, WebProNews, and Search Engine Land. We published his writing in SiteProNews a couple times in 2006 or 07. He started cohosting SEO101 in 2009, a spot he shared with Ross Dunn and Scott Van Achte until his passing earlier this week. In his career, he helped I have no idea how many (lots and lots) of people find jobs or further their careers. A large number of highly respected SEOs credit him with the start or some part of their careers. The point is, John made an enormous impact and I hope his family and loved ones understand how much he was loved by his family of colleagues in a tech-sector he helped build. He'll be missed by many and very much missed by me. John was one of my first real-world SEO friends. We met when both of us were speaking for the first time at a major search conference in San Jose. We somehow got drunk together on a hilarious shopping trip for pants that ended at some bland suburban mall the day before the conference opened. We were friends ever since. All of our worlds are much smaller without him in them, and the work-world in which he's a legend is far poorer without his presence. <3

I am fortunate to say that John Carcutt was one of my very best friends. We spoke each week (or close to it) for over 10 years as co-hosts of a popular podcast in our industry of SEO at which time we always caught up and supported each other. We would also connect outside of the podcast whenever we wanted to bounce ideas off each other on the latest Internet marketing tactics or a new business idea.

John and I never failed to laugh... a lot! John's sense of humor was clever and always friendly. No matter how overboard our teasing got, I could always hear the caring in his voice and it was obvious we both felt good about every minute we spent talking together.

All-in-all, I can't imagine life without being able to reach out and have a conversation with John. To say that I miss him already is an understatement of the highest level.

John has only been gone for a few days, so, I expect I will revisit this memorial and add more thoughts and feelings in the near future. Heaven knows there are more feelings and words than I can sort out at this point.

To John's wife, Annie, son's Jordan and Andrew, I extend the deepest condolences for your sudden loss of such a good, loving husband and father. His voice took on an edge of such pride and love when he spoke of you. I'm so sorry he left you so soon. The greatest of hugs, Ross

I just want to say a quick note about the incredibly caring, kind person that John was. Community was important to him. I really appreciated his willingness to help those around him and to be so positive and uplifting.
I'm really so sorry for the loss of such a great person and I can't imagine the pain and loss that his family is experiencing at this time. My heart goes out to you all.
I thank John so much for being another voice of kindness in a world that can feel so unkind at times. His desire to add positivity will not be forgotten and will live on in many who knew him.
I look forward to thinking of him as I continue to plan our industry retreat in Mexico next May, something that he helped encourage me to get together and make happen. Even with him gone physically, he'll still be bringing us all together.
Rest in peace, love, kindness and contentment John ❤️
