Jerry C Chan

Biografía

Jerry C Chan (42) is survived by Everett Seider (3yrs), Elliott Chan (1yr), and companion Jordan Seider. He leaves behind his mother, Salena Chan, elder brother John K. Chan, and younger brother James C. Chan. He was in the prime of his life starting a new family. It was a time of joy and love as he enthusiastically engaged in raising Everett and Elliott. We were all proud of how willingly and earnestly he was in filling the role of a father. He left us and his family too soon.
In memory and celebration of Jerry, feel free to continue sharing your your favorite thoughts, stories or pictures. We, the family, are looking to capture as much of his life as possible. This site will continued to be kept and managed moving forward. We are hoping we can share this stie with Everett Elliott as they grow older. We also intend to print the submissions as a booklet to hand them out at the memorial service.

Gofundme: We have established a gofundme campaign to raise money for Everett and Elliott's college education. All gifts addressed to the Chan family will be directed to the college fund for Everette and Elliott. We are currently looking to move the gofundme site towards a trust and will update all when this happens. See below:
https://www.gofundme.com/everete-n-elliot-go2collegefund

Booklet: We had intended to create a booklet in memory of Jerry as a keepsake for all who attended the service. Due to the compressed schedule, we will be individually mailing and/or handing out the booklets after the service date. Please be sure to register your mailing addresses at the reception desk. For those unable to attend the service, you can email your address to: [email protected]. We will also extend the deadline to receive further stories to end of Sunday, Oct 16th. We will announce when booklets begin to ship which currently has a rough eta of Oct 26th.

Court Case: For those we are interested in details related to the criminal case, please email me at [email protected] for ideas on how to share information. Currently we are debating which site to be posting this information. Thanks.

Jerry's final resting place: The Rose Hills website does have a feature to find Jerry's location rather easily. There currently is no marker as it is still to be made. I am posting the location for convenience:
Burial Property Name Garden of Reflection Lawn
Burial Section 11
Burial Lot 1852

Yours truly,

James (Jimmy) Chan on behalf of the Chan, Fond, and Seider families.

Jerry was one of my all time favorite people and I loved him to pieces. I will never get used to him being gone. I miss all the weird txt messages he would send and the Hysterical late night phone conversations. I hate really the person who took him from me. Really hate. With every fiber of my soul.

If I was there that night Jerry I would have taken a bullet for you. Unfortunate that is not what life dictated. At least I know you are in heaven with our brother Sy. I’ll see you in the afterlife Jerry thanks for being such a good friend to me..

My last memory of Jerry was seeing him at the PCC library many years ago. He was seated near the front and had been drawing. It was nice to see a familiar face from high school church life and to chat a little.
To Jerry's family, I'm so saddened to hear the loss of your brother, son, friend, and father.

Jerry is not your typical person. There is nothing average about him. He and his brothers all share a similar swagger, but Jerry’s swagger is unforgettable. He talks in a cool, James Dean-like, bad-a$$ tone perfectly paired with his swaying, smooth body language. He stands out in a crowd and if you’ve ever met him, you won’t forget him. He is truly one of a kind, irreplaceable.

We hung out in elementary school and were best friends in fifth grade. I remember his break dancing phase. He was so good! He would spin on his head for what felt like an eternity. I would always make him breakdance for my friends. “Spin on your head!” was yelled more times than I can remember. He’s the best, never said no. In fifth grade Jerry invited me to his sleepover birthday party. I really wanted to go, but I was the only girl invited! My mom said I could go only if another girl went, but I don’t remember that happening… Still, I love that he wanted to include me despite the fact I was female. Girl or guy, never made a difference to him when it came to friendship. When I moved to Rosalind Road, our yards backed up to each other. I remember how Jerry and his friends would cut through my backyard to the vacant lot next door and play commando. My parents knew and never cared because, well, it was Jerry. He was always up to something, never a dull moment.

All the years I’ve known him, I’ve never heard him talk extensively about any girl but Jordan. She’s the only girl he was ever excited about – well, excited in Jerry speak. I remember the first time I met Jordan. Jerry threw a small gathering at his mother’s house. He said, “Come meet my wife!” I was like, “Wife? Jerry?” You see, Jerry is fiercely independent, loves nothing more than to be left to do his own thing in his own way. Jerry walked me over to the party and there she was, a beautiful blonde with curly locks and eyes only for Jerry. It’s no surprise that years later, she would be the mother of his children. Even the baby shower he threw for Elliot was not your average event. It was more like a party. Wouldn’t have expected anything less from Jer. He texted me pictures of Elliot after the birth. He didn’t send pictures of himself with the new baby as most people would, he sent pictures of Jordan and Elliot, Elliot and Everett, Elliot with a stuffed animal (she was so tiny!), etc. It was clear to me they made him happy and my fiercely independent friend was now part of a fiercely independent clan of four.

In our adult lives, after I moved back to San Marino, I would grab lunch or drinks with Jerry. I remember when he called me up to see if I wanted to go to Chinese brunch. When we got there, I said, “Oh! Chinese brunch is Dim Sum?” I swear Jerry had a cool name for everything. Even when we didn’t make plans to hang out, I would run into him. He was a Pasadena staple. He knew everyone. Sometimes I’d meet up with him at his favorite, Colorado Bar, and on occasion he’d even be there with someone I already knew. I could introduce him to anyone, even the pickiest of people, and they’d instantly love him. I remember coercing him to go to our high school reunion. I don’t think I sold him on it until I said Taylor Peck was organizing it, however. Of course he skipped the family friendly events but made it out to Julie Chan’s and the Bodega Bar. After the Bodega, a few of us made our own party that started at Jerry’s place then commenced early morning at the local Denny’s. Jerry was always down to stay out late.

Jerry is one of the most unique people I’ve ever known. He’s not only a childhood friend, but a life long friend. A friend I deeply value. To us, time is linear and in linear time, Jerry is no longer with us. But our memories are not linear, time is not rigid within the constructs of our brain. Because our thoughts transcend time and space, those we love are never lost. We can be with them at any moment we choose. I’m grateful for the time I knew Jerry and the memories we share. As long as I have those memories, he will always be here. I know it’s still early, and losing him hasn’t fully sunk in, processing what happened is still a challenge, but I will take solace in remembrance of the time we did have. I am grateful to have known him and when one is grateful, they cannot be sad. I know where ever you are now is a bigger party because of you. Love you, Jer. You are with us, always.

I’ve known Jerry since the early 1980’s. He was my neighbor, classmate and best friend. We had birthdays in April. The only Asian kids on our streets in the 80s. If the term existed back then, we were BFFs like the 2 Coreys (Feldman and Haim). Early part of our childhood was running around and exploring the neighborhood, trespassing on everyone’s backyard playing Commando (including the Kaufelt compound). He was my partner in crime. Sleepovers. Building house with cushions. Listening to music. Playing with robots. Riding bikes. (To the Arcade on Colorado or Pasadena Mall) Playing with fire. Watching movies. Our childhood was based on the Goonies, Stand by Me and Dream a Little Dream. Junior High we kept it up having sleepovers talking about girls, school and life. High School, we started to have different groups of friends, but always found the time to hang out, went to school dances. We even did a drama class project together signing a duet with suits and sunglasses. (Song by Aztec Camera) He was very trendy in High School, ahead of the times. After High School we would keep in touch. Those were the days before the technology of social media, emails or cell phones. But he came down to San Diego to stay with me for a while when I was in college. Then when social media and cell phones arrived, we connected more often, grabbing drinks and catching up. We sometimes would go for years without seeing each other, but when we got together, it would be just 2 kids talking about family, life and stupid things. We both have changed, but when we get together, he’s the same kid I grew up with. I’ve watched him grow and mature right in front of me. From that innocent kid, to some of the dark and happy days in the teens to the proud father he became, he was always the same loyal, brutally honest, fearless, sarcastic friend with dimples. My heart goes out to his family and those who will not get to have Jerry in their lives. I’m very fortunate to have had him in mine.

Our friend Taylor has this hanging in the wall of his store. I took a pic of it and texted it to Jerry. He thought it was hilarious and forwarded it to George Lin.

I'm stunned and sickened to hear about Jerry's passing. We were classmates in high school, and I knew him only distantly then. We got back in touch years later in 2012, when we ran into each other and discovered we lived just a few blocks away from each other in Pasadena. It was so great to reconnect with him all those years later, and get to know him better. We had a great time hanging out, and he was somebody I could talk to about anything. I remember a lot of laughter, funny stories and good times, but I also remember our being able to share a lot of the more serious things on our minds, and our hopes, fears and dreams. It was great having somebody to talk to who was so understanding, such a good listener, and who had so much wisdom and empathy. I moved away to Texas shortly thereafter, and one of my regrets in doing so was not being able to see Jerry as often. The last time I saw him was at our 20-year high school reunion in 2014. An incredible night with lots of laughter and emotion ended with a late-night drink at Jerry's, and breakfast at a nearby Denny's around 3am. It's a night I'll always remember, and Jerry is a friend I'll always remember. Jerry was taken from us way too suddenly, and way too soon. My heart goes out to his family, particularly his small children, who will grow up without a father. He was an incredible man, and I wish they could have had decades more with him, instead of just a few short years.

On behalf of Dione Wu: I can't say that Jerry and I were close friends... I didn't know him particularly well. He was my classmate at San Marino High School. We were is Ms. Bush's class for chemistry. He was quiet. For most kids, wearing t-shirt and shorts was daily wear and dressing up was for special occasions. But he seemed to be the opposite. He always wore slacks and dress shirts. On the few instances I saw him in a t-shirt and shorts, it was nice to see, as if he could relax a little bit.

At one of the high school reunions, we had a wonderful time chatting. It was nice to be able to chat with him about nothing serious as if we had always been buddies.

I can't remember when this was exactly, but Jerry and I were only a year apart so we shared some interesting moments in high school. It just so happened Jerry and I were both going to the same dance one year. And so as a fun surprise my mom didn't tell us she had secretly signed up to be a chaperone. It was surreal when mom surprised us and dragged us together for a family photo op. Mom was proud and beaming of course. Jerry and I were surprised and absolutely embarrassed. The look you see in the image is us trying to contain ourselves with Jerry's irritation and my stunned silence ... including the two others who had to play along. And as we took this picture Jerry was speaking and seething through his teeth.... "hurry up and take the picture." We never did another dance together after that.

Jerry and I were tight as thieves during our teenage years. Our birthdays were one day apart and when you're young and somewhat clueless, that might as well be a telltale sign that you were meant to be friends. And that we were - friends who connected deeply in our core. I always wanted a younger brother, and I'd like to think he thought of me as his adoring older sister. On paper, our bond didn't make much sense. But we understood each other intuitively. Jerry had an easy smile and endearing charm that lighted up your heart. Even now, I can still picture his signature head tilt as he swiped his long bangs casually to the side of his face and his ever slow moving swagger when he walked defying all the troubles of this world. We lost touch when I moved away to college, but Jerry will always have the most adoring sister in me. I will hold him in my heart and treasure our friendship until we meet again. It is my prayer that his soul is at rest and has finally found peace.

I’ve known Jerry since I was probably around 4 years old. Our parents were friends and our siblings were all around the same age, and so many of my childhood memories involve the Chans. We lost touch as we grew older, but I always will have such fond memories of Jerry. Aside from his He-Man obsession, impressive collection of Gunds bears (or Jerry’s bears as we called them), and his Liu-Kang hairstyle in high school, I remember that he always had a heart of gold
I remember that even in his high school years, when he was trying to come off as a hard, brooding, tough guy, he couldn’t hide his good nature. When we had to move out of our San Marino house, and my poor single mom was feeling overwhelmed because my brother was mysteriously absent, Jerry (and our other friend Rick) magically showed up to help us move. I don’t even know how he knew we needed help. He made moving day tolerable and almost fun. That was Jerry. We wouldn’t see him for a while, but then he would mysteriously pop up out of the shadows ready to help and lighten up the mood. We will miss you Jerry. I wish I had kept in better touch. I wish my kids would have been able to meet you. I guess I always just figured there would be more time. We will miss you brother. Rest In Peace.

No words can express my grief regarding the loss of Jerry. He was one of my closest and most loyal friends for over 15 years. He was one of my favorite people in the world because he was a realist. He never sugar coated anything and told me the truth always. We also made fun of each other mercilessly to entertain ourselves, but we always knew that we were bonded together no matter what. I love you Jerry, and I will miss you terribly.
