"Wherever a beautiful soul has been there is a trail of beautiful memories."

Biografía

Dr. Jan I Fox passed away on August 15, 2020 at her residence in South Point, OH.  She will be remembered in many facets for both her personal life and career.

Dr. Fox was a beautiful soul whose strength and kindness was a beacon for many.  She was a wild one; she loved fiercely, laughed copiously, and lived freely. She moved throughout this world without regrets. She is the epitome of love and sacrifice.

Professionally, her accomplishments are too many to name here. Her energetic drive broke glass ceilings throughout her career and she was truly inspirational. She served Marshall University for more than thirty years in different capacities, including the Senior Vice President for IT/CIO.

She is preceded in death by her parents Juanita “Winnie”and Jack Fox, brother Jim (Marilyn) Fox, and sister Dr. Julie Fox.  She is survived by her loving husband, William L Cremeans, Jr., daughters Catherine Cremeans (Brian Bosley) of Cincinnati, OH and Bethany (Chad) Barklay, grandchildren Gabriel and Brooklyn of Durham, NC, and brother John Fox of Albany OH.

We all feel this great loss. During this difficult time, her family asks that we can all share our loving memories and contributes at https://www.mykeeper.com/events/JanFox/

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to OVEC, PO Box 6743, Huntington, WV. 25773

We are so saddened to hear of Jan's passing. Our vacations to the beach and mountains will never be forgotten, always brightened by Jan's humor, intelligence, and, not to forget, her wonderful cooking. She made our times together brighter, funnier, and full of warmth. Somehow, the treasures of life never seem to last long enough. Our thoughts to Bill, Bethany, and Catherine, hoping you find comfort in each other and your memories.

Last time I saw Jan was back in May 1990. We lost touch for many years and then we found one another again on facebook. One of the items on my bucket list was to go back to WV and see her again. She was my first boss at Academic Computing at MUSOM and I worked for her 3 years until I graduated and moved away. She was more than a boss, a mentor, a teacher, a friend, .... I even lived for 3 months in a small apartment Jan and Bill had next their house. Wow... it is unbelievable yet it is true (tears). Even though I have not seen Jan for over 30 years, she could have such a great influence on me that I still remember and cherish to this day. RIP Jan. Hang in there Bill & Beth.

“We can’t know why the lily has so brief a time to bloom in the warmth of sunlight’s kiss upon its face before it folds into its fragrance and bids the world good night to rest its beauty in a gentler place. But we can know that nothing that is loved is ever lost and no one who has touched a heart can really pass away because some beauty lingers on in each memory of which they’ve been a part.”

Condolences to Bill, Catherine and Beth for the tremendous loss. Jan was the light of so many lives and her brilliance, kindness and generosity will be forever missed. She was a pioneer in information systems and a fearless champion of science , technology and medicine. Working with her was a joy and nothing was impossible as we pushed to bring new services and possibilities to West Virginians. But long before, we were students, colleagues and close friends becoming Bill’s best man at their wedding. She was the love of his life. Sadly missed by many more who were touched by her life.

I have adored Jan since I was an adorable little toddler. She and her sister “Julie” shared their room and their life size Backyard playhouse with my sister and I most every weekend when our parents would allow. She sported a “dutch boy “ hair cut that magnified her beautiful blue eyes.
She was the cutest kid - smart, comical with an infectious giggle, sweet, easy going. My favorite memory was toasting ginger ale in Aunt Winnie’s crystal stemmed glasses while dressed up in vintage evening gowns and heels - in the life size Backyard playhouse . Jan grew up brave, wise, compassionate , with utmost integrity and determination in anything she was a part of. Her greatest treasure was her husband, children, grandchildren, and family. She loved them with all her heart . I will miss her every day, but she will stay a part of me as she has been all my life.

I have known Jan for many years and worked closely with her for the past eight years. We worked on an NSF funded CI project that established the 'Big Green' cluster in the Drinko Library. For the
past 19 years she was very involved the the development of the Heritage Farm Forums, bringing new ideas to the community, working with our community leaders: Mike Perry, Art & Joan Weisberg, Dr. Touma, MU Presidents, City Mayors etc. In all those years she never missed a meeting. Before one meeting a snow storm almost halted a Forum at Heritage Farm. Jan called me to say she would be a little delay as she was stuck on top of their hill. She made it on time. That day at the meeting we conducted the last virtual goodbye to Mike Perry, as he passed away the following day.
Jan has been linked to every thing that is good about Marshall and Huntington. Up until the beginning of this year we had numerous 'Starbucks Conferences' with Dr. Touma discussing ways we could add value to the community efforts. I exchanged texts with Jan up to just a few days before her passing. I did send her a text at 9:00 am last Saturday noting that I was thinking of her, but this time our dear colleague and friend did not reply.

Jan was part of the interview team when I was hired as chief of staff at Marshall in 2010. From that day and throughout my time at Marshall and in my current role at the state higher ed central office, she was always supportive, honest and helpful - a tremendous mentor but, even more so, a dear friend. Her amazing contributions to the university and our state stand on their own, but it was her caring, humor and kindness that were known uniquely to each person with whom she worked. She loved my kiddos and always asked about our family, while refusing to lament her own personal health battles. I am grateful for her support in my career and privileged to have worked with her. But I’m also terribly sad to lose a friend who cared so deeply about others. I have missed working with her daily but it was always such a joy to run into her as she continued to volunteer her expertise in a variety of roles in higher education and technology. Our love and thoughts are with her family. She had a remarkable impact on so many, and will be greatly missed by us all.

Jan expected the best from her employees but she never asked anyone to work harder than she herself worked. She had a very strong work ethic. She appreciated a job well done. Family and celebrations of life events were important to her. She loved to cook and would share the fruits of her labor with her IT Family. I had not been working at Marshall long when one of my older sisters passed away and she came to my sister's visitation. My daughter had a chronic health condition and Jan let me know that she could empathize. In her final days, she heard that my daughter had just had her first child and Jan made it a point to send a gift. Thoughts and prayers for her husband, girls and grandchildren.

“The tide recedes but leaves behind bright seashells on the sand.
The sun goes down, but gentle warmth still lingers on the land.
The music stops, and yet it echoes on in sweet refrains…..
For every joy that passes, something beautiful remains.”
~Unknown

Your life was a blessing to me, a treasure that will forever remain in my heart. Our relationship has blossomed over the years, from classmates, to colleagues, to friends. From the moment I first met you, I could see the beauty of your heart and the kindness of your soul. You gave me my start in higher education and mentored me along the way. Without your friendship and guidance, I could not have overcome the many obstacles in life. You were always there with an outstretched hand and warm smile. I will forever cherish our friendship. My heart is breaking. Thank you for touching my life. I will take your lead one last time despite the loss; I will focus on the seashells in the sand and the gentle warmth covering the land. Your memory is the beauty that remains forever and always.

I first met Jan when I was a sophomore in college. She gave me a job as a student assistant. Before I started, I heard all these stories about how hard she was to get along with and how demanding she was, but as I began working for her, I quickly realized none of those stories were true. Jan was driven and she was passionate about her work. She taught me so much in those three years that I worked for her. I remember one time I was helping her with a project for the Board of Governors and I messed something up. She called me in her office and I was sure she was going to yell at me but she didn't. She sat me down and we just talked. She told me don't get upset by your mistakes, use them as a learning experience, everything was a learning experience with Jan. She told me many times nothing was wasted if we learned something from it.

Jan would give the shirt off her back to help anyone. She treated everyone equally no matter their status, from the cleaners to the president. We wonder when we are gone if we will have had an impact, or if we have left a legacy. Jan did both in me and in so many others. She helped mold me from a lazy slacker that did just enough to get by to someone who will work for what they want. I will forever be grateful for the time I was privileged to spend with Dr. Jan Fox. There will never be another like her.

Jan hired me for my first job out of college. She was a force. I learned so much from her and we had so much fun. She pushed the envelope and lead in her field - the hardest worker I knew. Often she would bring in vases of flowers from her gardens or wildflowers from beside the road. She was a fantastic cook and brought in food often. Always the consultant with anything that ailed you - providing pages of research. Never ever would let you pay for lunch. She loved so big and always had pictures to show of her beloved family. Her kind soul will be missed.

Jan was a close colleague who introduced Marshall University to the Information Age. Her effervescent personality carried the day as we moved the university forward with a computer infrastructure based on the development of one of America’s first digital libraries, The Drinko Library. She was key to Pres Wade Gilley in this effort. In many ways it is a physical legacy. It seems only yesterday when we last spoke about the future of higher education, recalling how MU started remote online learning. Thanks to Jan, many students gained a leg up in their eventual careers. Educators hope to make a positive difference in their institutions and students. Jan did. We will miss her.

Jan gave me my first job at Marshall - she hired me for temporary help during the summer between my freshman and sophomore years. She had me do everything from dusting the very expensive decorate glass display in Drinko to crawling on the floors around campus taking stock of Ethernet cables. She'd also often ask me to help her find a really, really important paper on her desk 10 minutes before really important meetings (quite the way to get the adrenaline flowing). She was a great role model for how women can and should lead in higher ed. That summer job she offered me opened many doors for me at Marshall - and I was able to spend the rest of my time there working in the library. I couldn't be more thankful for the opportunities she gave me.

Catherine - I'll never forget her showing up to our softball games, always, with her computer. She was the epitome of working mom, what a wonderful role model you had! My condolences to you all.
